New Delhi, <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword>'s smartphone market has maintained stability with 148.6 million shipments overall in 2023, witnessing a minor drop of two per cent, a new report has said. According to the market research firm <keyword id="19930983" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="canalys" source="keywords">Canalys</keyword>, Indian smartphone vendors benefited from strong demand throughout the festival season, driving Q4 sales to 38.9 million units -- a remarkable 20 per cent increase in comparison to the previous year. "In 2023, growing investment in mainline retail space proved beneficial not only for vendors but also allowed the overall market to stabilise," said <keyword id="20238672" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sanyam-chaurasia" source="keywords">Sanyam Chaurasia</keyword>, Senior Analyst at Canalys. <keyword id="19897758" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="samsung" source="keywords">Samsung</keyword> maintained the top position in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2023 with a market share of 20 per cent and shipments of 7.6 million units. Xiaomi continued its robust performance, claiming second place by shipping 7.2 million units. Vivo secured third position with shipments of seven million units, while realme and OPPO rounded out the top five by shipping 4.5 million and 3.7 million units, respectively, the report mentioned. "The premium segment witnessed robust growth, thanks to easy financing options, incentive schemes for retailers and rising disposable income," said <keyword id="20269245" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="chaurasia" source="keywords">Chaurasia</keyword>. "With the celebration of Diwali in November 2023, Apple got the opportunity to push the latest iPhone 15 series during the festive sales, contributing more than 50% to its shipments in Q4," he added. The analyst also noted that Samsung had set aggressive retail targets for its premium Galaxy S23 series to drive premium segment growth. Along with this, Samsung's latest Galaxy S23 FE launch in Q4 drove shipments, due to compelling banking deals. "Canalys expects the Indian smartphone market to grow by mid-single digits in 2024, driven by affordable 5G and the pandemic period replacement cycle. But the biggest challenge for vendors this year will be to manage the rising bill of materials costs," Chaurasia stated.

Singer <keyword id="19908058" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shankar-mahadevan" source="keywords">Shankar Mahadevan</keyword>, violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan and percussionist Selvaganesh Vinayakram, Hussain's collaborators in the fusion group Shakti, won one Grammy each at the event held at the Crypto.com Arena Sunday night. Shakti won the 2024 Grammy Award for best global music album for "This Moment". The album features the four Indians as well as its founding member, the legendary British guitarist John McLaughlin. "This Moment", which released to critical acclaim in June 2023, is the group's first studio album in more than 45 years. Besides his award for Shakti, Hussain won two other awards -- the best global music performance for "Pashto" and best contemporary instrumental album for "As We Speak". The best global music performance category had eight nominees, including "Abundance In Millets", a song by Falu and featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi, "Shadow Forces" by Arooj Aftab, Vijay Iyer, and Shahzad Ismaily, and "Alone" by Burna Boy. Rakesh Chaurasia, nephew of legendary flautist Hariprasad Chaurasia, won two Grammys as part of the ensemble of American banjo player Bela Fleck and American bassist Edgar Meyer for "Pashto" and "As We Speak". "Without love and music we are nothing," Hussain said in his award acceptance speech for "Pashto". "Thanks to the Academy, thanks to all these great musicians for giving us this beautiful (live) music today. One of our members is missing, Mr Bela Fleck. "So from him, Mr Rakesh Chaurasia, and Mr Edgar Meyer, our deepest thanks... Families are here and without them, we are nothing. Without love, music, harmony, we are nothing," the veteran percussionist said. This is not the first win for Hussain at the awards organised by the US-based Recording Academy. He earlier won Grammys, across categories and in solo capacity as well as in collaborations, in 1991, 1996 and 2008. The "As We Speak" team -- Hussain, Meyer, Fleck and Chaurasia -- were also nominated for best instrumental composition for motion. Mahadevan, who took the stage alongside Rajagopalan and Selvaganesh, gave a shout-out to McLaughlin and Hussain. While McLaughlin gave the ceremony a miss, Hussain was backstage as he had won another Grammy. "We miss you John ji. Zakir Hussain, he just had another Grammy today. Thank you boys, God, family, friends and India. We are proud of you, India," said Mahadevan in the speech, dedicating the win to his wife Sangeeta. Rajagopalan thanked the Recording Academy for the recognition. A R Rahman, who won two Grammys for "Slumdog Millionaire" in 2008, shared a group selfie with Hussain, Mahadevan and Selvaganesh on Instagram. "It's raining Grammys for India... According to a <keyword id="216011" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="canalys" source="Orion">Canalys</keyword> report, <keyword id="874458" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="xiaomi" source="Orion">Xiaomi</keyword> was still the number one vendor for the full year. <keyword id="10591" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="samsung" source="Orion">Samsung</keyword> took the number one spot in the fourth quarter (Q4) for the first time since Q3 2017, shipping 6.7 million units for a market share of 21 per cent. The second place went to vivo, which shipped 6.4 million units, mainly via offline channels. "India was better positioned to weather the global downturn than other markets. But domestic consumer spending cooled in the last few months of 2022," said <keyword id="13660230" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sanyam-chaurasia" source="Orion">Sanyam Chaurasia</keyword>, an analyst at Canalys. Even during the festive season, the domestic market suffered a fall in transactions, retail spending and electronic imports. "In 2022, consumers already had up-to-date technology that they had bought during the pandemic, thereby delaying further purchases. This led to smartphone brands struggling with inventory management because demand was subdued," <keyword id="1637534" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="chaurasia" source="Orion">Chaurasia</keyword> added. The Indian economy started to feel the impact of the global economic slowdown toward the end of 2022. "We are entering 2023 with economic indicators suggesting a sluggish performance in the short term," said Chaurasia. But, in 2024, India is set to hold its general election and the government's strategy will be to boost consumers' purchasing power, even if inflation remains high. "We expect moderate growth in the Indian smartphone market in 2023 fuelled by a replacement cycle driven by 5G devices, state government deals, smartphone penetration and the introduction of new use cases," said Canalys. India's smartphone shipments fall 6% in 2022, moderate growth in 2023

"I have just started learning." That's Hariprasad <keyword id="1637534" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="chaurasia" source="Orion">Chaurasia</keyword>, flute maestro, one of India's most well-known classical musicians and the man who could well have been a wrestler instead. With a humble shake of his head as if trying to get rid of the idea of success, the 84-year-old rushes in with words when asked about seven decades of playing the flute. His journey, he says, has just started and all hopes of perfecting the craft can only be fulfilled in the next birth. "Now I can only hope that something happens in the next birth. But I am happy so many people across the world give me so much love," Chaurasia told PTI in an interview. Chaurasia, who has comfortably straddled the twin worlds of classical and popular music and has composed melodies for films such as "<keyword id="310845" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="silsila" source="Orion">Silsila</keyword>" with santoor maestro <keyword id="6432164" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shivkumar-sharma" source="Orion">Shivkumar Sharma</keyword>, is grateful for the adulation he receives from the audience. "Today they come to see me, no matter how well or how badly I play the flute. It is their love for me that brings them here," he said, referring to his advanced age and his battle with Parkinson's disease. "I am very fortunate that I receive so much love, I don't know if anyone else has been loved so much or not. I know of Krishna, but he was only loved by the girls," the Mumbai-based artiste said playfully. Had he continued on the path set by his wrestler father, it wouldn't have been possible to reach where he is today, Chaurasia said. "My father used to tell me that I would beg for food if I continue on this line. But look where I am today and how much love I receive from people. Could this have been possible if I had continued in the field of wrestling?" he asked. Chaurasia was born in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, in 1938. His father had decided his son would follow his footsteps into the wrestling mat. However, Chaurasia, uninterested and perennially tired after the training his father was putting him through, had other things on his mind. According to the veteran musician's biography, "Breath of Gold", by journalist Sathya Saran, he secretly started learning at the age of 15 from a classical vocalist called Raja Ram in the neighbourhood. He soon drifted towards the more instrumental dimension of it through the bamboo flute that has become synonymous with the maestro. It was only when he was to leave for a job with the All India Radio as a performer in Cuttack, Odisha, in 1957 that his father came to know about his son's passion for the flute. "Wrestlers tend to fight every day, whether it is with other wrestlers or with vegetable vendors in a market. But flute requires devotion, service of people, service of the guru, you need to keep the master happy because he is akin to god, it is a line that only very fortunate ones get to carry forward," Chaurasia said. The music composer and director received national and international recognition through several awards and accolades such as the Sangeet Natak Akademi award, the Padma Vibhushan, the Padma Bhushan and the title of 'Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau' from the Government of the Netherlands. Chaurasia was also appointed Knight in the Order of Arts and Letters by France. In his long years associated with the flute, Chaurasia has worked with leading names in the world of music, including singer-songwriter George Harrison of The Beatles, English guitarist John McLaughlin, legendary sitarist Ravi Shankar and tabla player <keyword id="8925" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="zakir-hussain" source="Orion">Zakir Hussain</keyword>. After moving to Mumbai, then Bombay, in 1962, Chaurasia gradually went up the popularity ladder by working in films, including "Jahan Ara" (1964), "<keyword id="30732" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="umrao-jaan" source="Orion">Umrao Jaan</keyword>" (1981), and "Hero" (1983), playing an interlude here and there. The iconic tune played by actor Bharat Bhushan and then Jackie Shroff playing his son in Subhash Ghai's "Hero" overnight became Chaurasia's calling card and is still remembered. Even though Chaurasia and Sharma worked in several films together, it was only with Yash Chopra's romance drama "Silsila" (1981) that both artistes came to be known as Shiv-Hari, a music director duo that delivered blockbuster music film after film. Talking about the films of the era, Chaurasia said after reaching Bombay, he saw many talented people and thought of trying his luck in the film industry. "We worked a lot in films and the driving force was always this that if these talented people can make music, then why not us. And by god's grace, it all went well." The Shiv-Hari duo was behind the still remembered music of "Chandni" (1989), "Lamhe" (1991), and "Darr" (1993) among several other films. "Forgive me for saying this but today's films and music do not touch people. Can they make 'Mughal-e-Azam' today, or 'Anarkali', or 'Baiju Bawra'? Nobody has it in them to make such cinema. Today, they discuss it for two hours and make a film in a day," Chaurasia said disapprovingly. The octogenarian artiste still has hope for the younger generation, who he said are more interested in learning than his own generation was back in the day. The global smartphone market fell slightly by 1 per cent to 293.4 million units in Q3 with vendors pushing new models following a healthy inventory level in Q2. <keyword id="10591" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="samsung" source="Orion">Samsung</keyword> held the pole position and shipped 57.4 million units with a 20 per cent market share. <keyword id="6354427" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="apple" source="Orion">Apple</keyword> followed in second place, shipping 50 million units and gaining 17 per cent market share, driven by strong initial demand for the iPhone 15 series with USB-C upgrade. <keyword id="874458" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="xiaomi" source="Orion">Xiaomi</keyword> took third place, shipping 41.5 million units, achieving an annual growth of 2 per cent, owing to strong performance in emerging markets. "Rising demand for fresh offerings in emerging markets is propelling brands and channels forward as the holiday season approaches," said Sanyam Chaurasia, senior analyst. "Xiaomi and the TRANSSION Group maintained their strong performance from the previous quarter and were the sole brands among the top five to experience growth," he added. Vendors are seeking opportunities to solidify their positioning in the premium market. However, as foldable smartphone options continue to increase, this trend poses a challenge to Samsung's current dominance in the same market. "OPPO strategically introduced the Find N3 and OnePlus Open models in different regions, demonstrating Android brands' ambition to capture the global foldable market," said Zhong.

The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/mobile/news/oneplus-10r-smartphone-india-launch-date-revealed/articleshow/89091169.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">smartphone</a> market in India achieved a record 162 million shipments in 2021, growing 12 per cent on 2020, a new report revealed. After a tough start to the year, due to the second wave of Covid-19, India recovered strongly in the second half, reports market research firm <keyword id="216011" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="canalys" source="Orion">Canalys</keyword>. "Thanks to the vaccination rollout, market reopening and pent-up demand, smartphone shipments reached all-time highs for the full-year. Growth is expected to continue in 2022, driven by both replacement demand and new customers migrating to smartphones," Sanyam Chaurasia, Analyst Canalys said in a statement. Following a strong comeback in Q3, smartphone vendors shipped 44.5 million devices in Q4 for 2 per cent growth, despite a challenging supply chain. Xiaomi was the leader, shipping 9.3 million units and maintained its 21 per cent market share. Samsung came second with 8.5 million units for 19 per cent share. For the first time realme climbed to third place in India, with a 49 per cent year-on-year increase in volume that reached 7.6 million shipments. Fourth and fifth place were taken by vivo and OPPO, with 5.6 million and 4.9 million units respectively. "Overall, India will see upward momentum towards future-proof technologies, with smartphones being at the core of the digital ecosystem and growing ever-more essential to the daily lives of Indian citizens," Chaurasia added.

Expectedly, Prime Minster Narendra Modi topped the overall Indian Twitter engagement rankings with over 7.2 million engagements. Among Indian Politicians Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is at #2 with 3.5 million engagements, UP CM Yogi Adityanath and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were 3rd and 4th in the Indian Politicians engagement rankings. Surprising inclusions in the top 10 among politicians were BJP Spokesperson Sambit Patra at #8 who clocked a 1.1 million engagements; Dr Kumar Vishwas at #5 who got 1.2 million engagements. Sonu Sood’s humanitarian work during the pandemic saw huge resonance on Twitter where even at a Twitter following of a tenth of super star Shah Rukh Khan (Sonu Sood’s 4.6 million followers to SRK’s 41.3 million followers) he topped Twitter engagement among Bollywood Stars with a phenomenal 2.4 million engagements. The Bollywood Badshah Shah Rukh Khan was at #2 with 7.3 lakh engagements. Akshay Kumar with 6.72 lakh engagements was at #3, and Anupam Kher with 4.74 lakh engagements was at #4. Former Maharashtra CM, the late Vilasrao Deshmukh’s actor-son Riteish Deshmukh was at #5 with 4.2 lakh engagements. Pooja Hegde was the surprise entrant into the top 10 with 2.51 lakh engagements. In the Business Leaders category, Anand Mahindra towers over others with over 4 lakh engagements. RPG Group’s Chief Harsh Goenka is at #2 with 2.2 lakh engagements. Chinese mobile phone brands India CEO’s Manu Kumar Jain of XiaoMi and RealMe’s Madhav Sheth are at #3 and #4 respectively with 1.5 lakh and 1.1 lakh engagements respectively. Wipro Chairman Rishad Premji with 49K engagements is at #5, Biocon’s Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw with 41K engagements at #6, Marico’s Harsh Mariwala with 24K engagements is at #7, Micromax co-founder Rahul Sharma with 19K engagements at #8 and Chairman of JSPL and former MP, Naveen Jindal with 16K engagements is at #9. Google’s Global CEO Sundar Pichai with 15K engagements is at #10. The IPL was the flavour of the season for cricketers where expectedly India captain and expectant father Virat Kohli topped Twitter engagement with 2.4 million engagements. Suresh Raina was at #2 with 1.9 million engagements. Former stars Sachin Tendulkar at #3, Harbhajan Singh at #5, and Virendra Sehwag at #6, actively engage with fans and followers on Twitter with 1.5 million; 6.8 lakh and 6.3 lakh engagements. Aakash Chopra, now a commentator is also hugely popular and ranks #4 with over 9.65 lakh engagements on Twitter in October. Perennial favourite Mahendra Singh Dhoni was completely inactive on Twitter in October despite more than 8.1 million followers. Among Indian sports persons, outside of cricket, Olympic medallist and pro-boxer Vijendra Singh tops with 4.27 lakh engagements. Perhaps the India’s best kept secret in sports is veteran pistol shooter, coach and sports enthusiast 88-year old Dadi Chandro Tomar, better known as ‘Shooter Dadi’ from Baghpat, UP. Since learning to shoot when she was well into her sixties she has attained national fame as an accomplished shooter having won more than 30 national championships. She was at #2 in the non-cricket sports category with a phenomenal 2.84 lakh engagements leaving superstars like Saina Nehwal, Babita Phogat and Jwala Gutta behind! In the intensively competitive Journalists category, News Nation’s Deepak Chaurasia topped Twitter engagement with a whopping 1.88 million engagements. Aaj Tak’s Rohit Sardana was at #2 with 1.1 million engagement followed by Sushant Sinha with 1.05 million engagements.
