Spending more than a full month separated from her child was "extremely challenging," Morgan told Insider, but she assumed it would just make their reunion all the sweeter.</p><p>She was wrong.</p><div type="image" title="Alex Morgan and her daughter, Charlie Carrasco." height="1513" width="2017" msid="85746579" hostid="261"></div><p>"She honestly thought I was a ghost," Morgan said of her daughter. "She was like, 'who are you again?' It was like 35 days from when I saw her!"</p><p>"It was terrible," she added.</p><p>Fortunately for Morgan, one of her <keyword id="11918126" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="dogs" source="Orion">dogs</keyword> was there to save the day. Blue, the family's 110-pound pitbull mix, gave Morgan extra puppy love upon her return home from Tokyo.</p><div type="image" title="Alex Morgan plays soccer with her dog, Blue." height="1235" width="1647" msid="85746582" hostid="261"></div><p>"Blue was very excited to see me," she said. "He was like, licking my legs and everything. It's kind of gross, but like I hadn't seen him in a month."</p><p>Morgan is an unabashed dog lover and a vocal proponent of pet adoption; she and Blue even <a href="https://www.peta.org/features/video-soccer-champ-alex-morgan-says-dogs-family-members/">starred in a PETA video</a> in 2018. The two-time World Cup champion and her husband, former MLS player Servando Carrasco, even added another pitbull mix, Kona, to the family in September 2019.</p><p>Of course, Charlie's arrival less than a year later had the potential to shake up the family dynamic. But the toddler "absolutely loves the dogs" - so much so that Morgan suspects her daughter may think she's a dog herself.</p><p>"She hangs out with the dogs quite a bit and sometimes I question that she knows that she's a human," Morgan said laughing. "She loves literally laying in the dogs like beds. I mean, I know they're comfortable and all, but I'm like, 'Charlie, okay, that's enough!'"</p><p>"She'll cuddle with the dogs at night," she added. "Before she goes to bed, she'll literally just like go up to them and like bear hug them and just like, hold on for five minutes. And then she like, laughs randomly. "... If you have an extra five minutes or an extra like five hours, hang out with your dog more today because they deserve it."</p><p>Morgan said she was aiming "to be in between" and vowed that she wouldn't "go the whole birthday cake type route." The combined efforts of hyper-competitiveness, early specialization, and incredible time commitments have contributed to a steady decline in youth sport participation across the country.</p><div type="image" title="alex morgan" height="961" width="1281" msid="78625531" hostid="261"></div><p>Now, with the coronavirus pandemic making nearly every aspect of life more logistically challenging, even those kids who want to get in on the competition are having a harder time doing so safely.</p><p>"With the pandemic, there's really been an added layer of... kids not always having accessibility to play youth sports, especially in their respective states," Morgan told Insider. "When I heard about this campaign, I was immediately drawn to it because I know just how important it is for girls to play sports in that that helps their self-confidence in that that helps them gain these life skills that you wouldn't be able to gain otherwise."</p><p>"I was really disturbed by all of these numbers and percentages of kids dropping out of sports and for them to be saying that it wasn't fun being the main reason that they dropped out," Morgan added.</p><p>Morgan and GoGo squeeZ are helping combat these issues by partnering with organizations like Laureus Sport for Good and Project Play, both of which help provide <keyword id="6354493" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="children">children</keyword> in underserved communities access to sports. But, in addition to giving more kids a chance to play sports, Morgan is also interested in making sure those chances are healthy, safe, and age-appropriate — just like her own formative experience participating in youth sports.</p><p>"My parents didn't push me into more of a travel team at an early age," Morgan said. "I felt like I was able to then have fun and feel like I was able to dedicate the right amount of time to sports that I wanted to, rather than being forced into dedicating more or less time."</p><div type="image" title="alex morgan" height="1400" width="1866" msid="78625535" hostid="261"></div><p>The fifth all-time leading goal scorer in USWNT history said she participated in multiple sports well into her childhood and didn't focus solely on <keyword id="3071" type="SPORT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Soccer">soccer</keyword> until she was considerably older than most. In fact, she stayed with her local rec soccer team for years rather than joining a travel team, something that she acknowledges is "probably very different than a lot of my teammates or other professional athletes nowaday."</p><p>"I never felt like there was this hyper-competitiveness until I got to maybe 14 or 15 years old when I started to get recruited by colleges and see this as an actual future," Morgan said. "Before then, I didn't even want to think about — other than having the dream of playing professional soccer — I didn't want to think about, okay, what's the avenue to get there. I have to practice this many hours this amount of days. It wasn't a plan for me to like to play so many hours."</p><p>"I think that was a good thing because when you're told that you have to do something, now all of a sudden, it's not fun to do it," she added. "When you want to do something, then you're going to have all the fun that you want during that, but you're not forced into it."</p><p>Though she says she's always been invested in the health of youth athletics because "sport has given me so much," Morgan has an added interest now that she has a daughter of her own. Charlie, born on May 7, 2020, is the daughter of two professional soccer players in Morgan and her husband, Fort Lauderdale CF midfielder Servando Carrasco.</p><div type="image" title="alex morgan" height="732" width="976" msid="78625538" hostid="261"></div><p>But even though her almost six-month-old has a leg up on the competition genetics-wise, Morgan insists that whatever passions Charlie pursues will be her own choice.</p><p>"Obviously, I would love to see Charlie and sports, but I don't want to push her in any direction that she's going to either resent me for or she's not gonna enjoy," Morgan said. "And so I want her naturally to define what she loves, and if that's sports, then I'm all for it, and I'll do everything I can to give her the accessibility to play sports."</p><p>But that sentiment isn't exclusive to her own child; Morgan wants every kid to have the chance to participate in athletics pressure free if they so choose.</p><p>"I want girls and boys to feel that as well," she said. Now she's adjusting to life in the UK with her daughter, Charlie, while preparing to return to competition for the first time in a year.</p><p>It's a lot to take on for anyone — even an Olympic gold medalist and two-time World Cup champion — but Morgan's love of the game trumps all.</p><p>"I want to play, you know? I want to play <keyword id="3071" type="SPORT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Soccer">soccer</keyword>," Morgan told Insider while promoting <a href="https://www.insider.com/alex-morgan-uswnt-gogo-squeez-accessible-youth-sports-initiatives-2020-10">her Fun Comes First campaign with GoGo squeeZ</a>. "This is what I love. It's my passion, and regardless of it being my job, it's what I love to do every single day."</p><div type="image" title="alex morgan" height="1400" width="1866" msid="78643592" hostid="261"></div><p>That wouldn't have been so easy back in the United States. Since 2013, Morgan has played club soccer in the National Women's Soccer League, the top women's league in America that, before the pandemic, featured all of the active players on the <keyword id="9096091" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="uswnt">USWNT</keyword> roster.</p><p>Though her Orlando Pride have been active in recent weeks, they did not partake in the <keyword id="4451139" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="nwsl">NWSL</keyword>'s Challenge Cup this summer due to a COVID-19 outbreak within their own ranks. The Pride will have played just four games in 2020 when their NWSL Fall Series schedule is all said and done this Saturday. Between the limited opportunities for competitive play and the outsized risk of contracting the virus while traveling to North Carolina and Texas, Morgan opted to try something new.</p><p>"I have to look at when the last time I played a competitive match was. A full match? That was the World Cup ... it's been a year," Morgan said. "I need to get back to full fitness, and I need to get games ... Not being able to do that in the US because of the season really wrapping up with the NWSL mid-October and not starting back up until a to-be-determined date next year, I knew that I needed more."</p><p>"An individual training environment just wasn't going to be enough for me to get my touch back, to get my speed back, to feel good about going in with the National Team," she added. "Whether that be in November or January, I wanted to be in a team environment consistently so I can feel good going into 2021 — which is hopefully when we'll be going to Tokyo."</p><div type="image" title="alex morgan" height="1708" width="2277" msid="78643596" hostid="261"></div><p>The FA Women's Super League provided her with the best opportunity to do just that. The league — which includes several sister teams to Premier League clubs — has rapidly bridged the gap in skill level between itself and the women's leagues traditionally thought to be the best on the planet, including the NWSL and Australia's W-League. International superstars such as Australia's Sam Kerr, Denmark's Pernille Harder, England's Lucy Bronze, and Ellen White, France's Valerie Gauvin, and Holland's Vivianne Miedema have all recently joined the FA WSL's ranks.</p><p>Plus, some of <a href="https://www.insider.com/european-soccer-clubs-poaching-american-stars-covid-19-pandemic-2020-9">Morgan's USWNT teammates have also taken the trip across the pond</a> to compete for various sides in the UK's top league. Strikers Tobin Heath and Christen Press both joined Manchester United, while midfielders Rose Lavelle and Sam Mewis signed with crosstown rival Manchester City.</p><p>"I feel like the decision is made so quickly, so it took me like a week or two to settle down here, but I feel good about my decision that I made," Morgan said. "It's pretty exciting just seeing so many international players play here as well as so much top talent domestically."</p><p>Though Morgan has yet to debut across the pond, her Hotspur squad has already played six matches this fall and has another eight on its schedule before the end of the year. She acknowledged that Tottenham might not have been the most obvious landing spot for a three-time FIFPro World11 star like herself. Morgan said she sees joining a team that "isn't really seen as one of the top two or three powerhouses in the WSL" gives her a unique opportunity to make an immediate impact for the club.</p><div type="image" title="alex morgan" height="1666" width="2222" msid="78643599" hostid="261"></div><p>"It gives me a challenge to really step in and get back to where I was before at an accelerated rate," Morgan said. "And also to bring my playing leadership and experience as well to try to help my team to more success."</p><p>But until she's match fit, Morgan will continue getting her lay of the land in North London. Though her husband, Servando Carrasco, didn't make the initial trip to the UK with her, Morgan said she's looking forward to his arrival at the end of the month.</p><p>As for Charlie, Morgan says the now-five-month-old has been remarkably adaptable to her new surroundings, which has undoubtedly made it easier for the 31-year-old to make the most of her time on the pitch.</p><p>"She's a total rock star and has been sleeping well, which gives me a lot of rest and helps me feel good for training and getting back in with the team," Morgan said. "We've also been doing a lot of day trips to parks and into the city.
