 Indian Space Research Agency (ISRO) launched <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/heres-why-chandrayaan-2-is-landmark-moon-mission-for-india/articleshow/69842571.cms">Chandrayaan 2</a> on 22 July 2019. And, it’s taken the spacecraft <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/why-chandrayaan-2-will-take-7-weeks-to-reach-moon/articleshow/70346159.cms">28 days</a> to finally reach a point where the Moon is close enough for it to break away from the Earth’s gravitational pull, which is called the lunar transfer phase. The maneuver was initiated at 9:00am today morning and took 28 minutes to complete. To allow itself into Moon’s orbit, Chandrayaan 2 had to slow down by firing its thrusters in the opposite direction from its actual movement, a process called retrofiring. Once, slow enough, the spacecraft was pulled in my Moon’s sphere of influence and the Lunar Orbit Insertion (LOI) was complete. Going forward The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/chandrayaan-2-why-indias-isro-is-going-to-the-moon/articleshow/69893150.cms">toughest part</a> of the Chandrayaan 2 mission is yet to come. The spacecraft will now orbit the Moon for two weeks before attempting its soft landing on the lunar surface. But, in order to ‘land’ on the moon and not ‘crash’, Chandrayaan 2 needs to cushion its fall. That’s where the thrusters come in. Vikram will perform a series of deboosting procedures to in order to ‘soft land’ on the moon. These ‘15 minutes of terror’ will make or break the mission with ISRO attempting to land on one of the most cratered regions of the Moon — the South Pole. Chandrayaan 2 successfully shifts into Moon’s orbit

 This will be the “15 most terrifying moments” for the Indian Space Research Organisation, according Chairman K Sivan. Chandrayaan 2 will aim for the Moon again on July 22

The craters may hold the key to a lot of unanswered questions about the Moon but they also make for a treacherous landing site. The probability of obstacles getting in the way is much higher. Only 33% of attempted soft landing on the Moon have been successful

 There have been 38 attempts to land on the moon but only 33% of those have actually been successful. SpaceIL is already working on its second attempt with Beresheet 2 spacecraft. Only three countries have ever successfully landed on the Moon

 US, Russia and China are the only countries to have successfully soft landed on the Moon so far. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/chinas-lunar-rover-does-what-indias-chandrayaan-2-is-hoping-to-do-on-the-moons-south-pole/articleshow/70942638.cms">China’s milestone</a> was being the first country to land on the far side of the moon. If India is successful, it will join their league and be the first country to land near the Moon’s South Pole. Chandrayaan 2 has a back up plan

 Vikram, Chandrayaan’s lander, is planning to land in flat region between the Manzimus C and Simplelius N craters. The primary site for landing Vikram is 70.9 degrees south and 22.7 degrees east. In case the site is not optimal when the lander reaches, ISRO has a secondary landing site around 1.6 kilometers away — but it will only have mere seconds to rise and move over to the new spot.  Vikram has to be at an exact angle of 12 degrees as it descends onto the Moon. Anything less or more could result in Vikram rolling over as it touches down. If Vikram doesn’t stand in an upright position, it won’t be able to deploy its instruments or let Pragyaan, the rover, out to roam the Moon’s surface. Is the lander strong enough?

 One of the reasons of Chandrayaan 2’s many delayed launched was injuries to Vikram’s legs during one of the tests. ISRO later confirmed that the lander was fit and had passed all the necessary tests and parameters for the mission. Here's why Chandrayaan 2's soft landing on the Moon will be the '15 most terrifying minutes' for ISRO

<ul><li><keyword id="414120" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chandrayaan-2">Chandrayaan 2</keyword> successfully inserted itself into the Moon’s orbit today morning. </li><li>It reached the Moon’s sphere of influence yesterday but had to slow in order to captured by the Moon’s gravity. </li><li>If Chandrayaan 2 had missed calculated its velocity then it wouldn’t be on track to land on the Moon’s South Pole. </li></ul>Chandrayaan 2 hit a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/chandrayaan-2-successfully-shifts-into-moons-orbit/articleshow/70748466.cms">new milestone today </a>when it successfully left Earth’s orbit to enter the Moon’s orbit. The completion of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/chandrayaan-2-to-enter-moon-orbit-tomorrow-while-slowing-down/articleshow/70733147.cms">Lunar Orbit Insertion</a> (LOI) — also dubbed ‘<keyword id="7719587" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="lunar-capture">lunar capture</keyword>’ — puts india a step closer to making India the first country to land on the Moon’s South Pole. The entire maneuver took approximately 28 minutes to complete and the spacecraft is now starting its orbit around the Moon preparing to get in position to put Vikram, the lander, on the lunar surface on 7 September 2019. After orbiting the planet for 28 days, the spacecraft finally reached the point where the Moon’s orbit intersects its path on 19 August 2019 at 3:00pm. “At that point, Chandrayaan 2 was in the sphere of influence of the moon,” said <keyword id="6358064" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="isro">ISRO</keyword> Chairman K Sivan during the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZX0-j5lpqQ&amp;feature=youtu.be">press conference</a>. Since it was now affected by the Moon’s gravitational force — the spacecraft is gaining speed. Left as is, Chandrayaan 2 would keep getting faster and then eventually escape the Earth. To ensure that the spacecraft makes it to the moon — ISRO had to slow it down. “In order to reduce the velocity of Chandrayaan 2 from 2.4 kmps to 2.1 kmps, the LOI maneuver was carried out today,” explained Sivan. Now, Chandrayaan 2 is at an obit of 114 kilometers by 18,000 kilometers around the Moon. Everything that could have gone wrong Had LOI not been successful, the orbit of Chandrayaan 2 would have been off target. As a result, Chandrayaan 2 wouldn’t have made it to the Moon’s South Pole and possibly have been lost altogether. “Out of 10.9 kmps, in case there is a dispersion of 10 cmps difference, that will end with the orbital inclination towards the moon will be off by seven degrees. It will not be able to meet the requirement of meeting the soft landing on the South Pole,” said Sivan. What’s next? The next major milestone from Chandrayaan 2 will take place on 2 September 2019 when the lander, Vikram, will separate from the main spacecraft after four more lunar burns. “Till now, all the operations were carried by the propulsion systems. After that, all the operations will be from the lander,” explained Sivan. ISRO will also be constantly checking on the operations of Vikram to make sure that everything is functioning properly before attempting the soft landing on 7 September 2019.  Chandrayaan 2’s lander, Vikram, separately from the orbiter on 2 September 2019 and is currently in the process of putting itself in the correct position to begin its soft-landing. It’s a milestone for India since it will be landing one of the most cratered regions on the Moon — that too with indegenious built technology for the first time. Chandrayaan 2 will also make India the fourth country to soft-land on the lunar surface, if it’s successful. Excited over ISRO’s achievements, the prime minister said, “I have been regularly and enthusiastically tracking all updates relating to Chandrayaan - 2 since it was launched on 22nd July 2019.  Here’s where and how to watch Chandrayaan 2 land on the Moon: National Geographic will be hosting the live broadcast on 7 September 2019 between 1.30 am to 2.30 am. The show will be hosted by National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) astronaut, Jerry Linenger. Linenger will walk viewers through the soft landing and also share his own experiences in space with them, according to the channel. Hotstar users can also watch the Moon landing live through the streaming platform. ISRO will also reportedly live stream the event from the Satellite Control Centre (SCC) in Bengaluru. The feed will be able on ISRO’s official site as well as through their channel on YouTube. Chandrayaan 2 is inching close to the Moon's South Pole, and India hopes to be the first country to land on its cratered surface. India's Moon mission will scan the lunar surface for clues about its composition. And, that unlock what's inside — like precious metals, according to a new study published in Nature GeoScience.

 Geologists believe that since there are similarities between the Earth and the Moon, the composition of mineral deposits found on the planet could be parallel to what might be found on the natural satellite. "Examination of mineral deposits on Earth suggests that iron sulfide is a great place to store precious metals, like platinum and palladium," stated James Brenan, the lead author of the paper. And, in order to confirm his findings, "the South pole seems like a good choice for sampling". How will Chandrayaan 2 help? The primary objective of the mission is to build on Chandrayaan 1's discovery of water on the Moon. The high tech instruments aboard the lander, Vikram, and the rover, Pragyan, will analyse the elemental composition of the Moon. Scientists are hoping that the information will help them find out more about other elements as well — like where there may find more Sulphur. "We have been able to link the Sulfur content of lunar volcanic rocks to the presence of iron sulfide deep inside the moon," said Brenan. "Our results show that sulfur in lunar volcanic rocks is a fingerprint for the presence of iron sulfide in the rocky interior of the moon, which is where we think the precious metals were left behind when the lavas were created," he added.

Now one daring asteroid is set to come closer to the planet — closer than even the Moon on September 1. The moon, on the other hand, is three times further away at 384,400 kms. In fact, Asteroid 11 ES 4 will be the only near-Earth object to venture in this close for another decade. Only in 2032 will another asteroid — <a href="https://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/sbdb.cgi?sstr=2008%20DB">2008 DB</a> — come within the same distance of Earth. Not only is this a milestone for the planet, but it’s also the asteroid’s closest encounter to Earth till date. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (<a href="https://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/sbdb.cgi?sstr=2011%20ES4;old=0;orb=0;cov=0;log=0;cad=1#cad">JPL</a>) database shows that the asteroid has made eight close approaches since 1987 but none as intimate as next week. <ul><li>The US-based National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) congratulates India’s AstroSat for discovering one of the farthest galaxies in the universe. </li><li>According to Union Minister Jitendra Singh, AstroSat’s <keyword id="9866507" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ultraviolet-imaging-telescope">Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope</keyword> (UVIT) cuts through noise even better than the Hubble Space Telescope. </li><li>The galaxy, dubbed AUDFs01 is located 9.3 billion light years from Earth. </li></ul>Nearly 10 billion light-years away from Earth, Indian astronomers discovered one of the farthest galaxies in the universe using the country’s first Multi-Wavelength Space Observatory — <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41550-020-1173-5">AstroSat</a>. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="77733544" title="India's first multi-wavelength satellite detects galaxy 9.3 billion light years away" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> And the reason it was able to make the significant discovery was that AstroSat’s Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) has less background noise as compared to the US-based National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Hubble Space Telescope, according to Union Minister <a href="http://achemaster.indiatimes.com/?type=login&amp;tempCode=7cTy5BS3wpcxDEBsG3eF6n3PSQUvy_N3zX-XJMcz5oIjdkPWJ2-8SncyRFoLxySJ">Jitendra Singh</a>. AstroSat’s edge over NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope Astrosat has been in orbit around Earth for nearly five years — to the day. It's a three-in-one imaging telescope. This means it can simultaneously observe the visible, the near-ultraviolet (NUV) and the far-ultraviolet (FUV). It has filters to differentiate between the three. Aside from the filters, the most important aspects of the UVIT are the detectors. This is where the AstroSat has a less up over the Hubble Space Telescope. These are photon-counting detectors that can measure the location and time of incidence of each photon — particles of light — individually, according to <a href="https://www.isro.gov.in/sites/default/files/article-files/node/7356/astrosat-book-final.pdf">ISRO.</a> “UVIT was a challenging instrument to design and build. It had to deal with unique problems of ultraviolet astronomy, incorporate modern technology and also withstand the intense mechanical vibrations during launch and the thermal and radiative extremes of outer space,” said ISRO in its book about AstroSat. <ul><li>The European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope has caught the first-ever direct image of two planets outside the <keyword id="52393" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Solar-System">solar system</keyword> orbiting an Earth-like star. </li><li>The trio captured on camera seems a lot like a much younger version of our own solar system, according to Alexander Bohn who led the research team. </li><li>The similarities could help scientists detail the evolution of our solar system and help with the hunt for other habitable worlds. </li></ul>The Very Large Telescope (VLT) has caught the first-ever direct photograph of a solar system that looks very much like our own — only much younger. Nearly 300 light-years away, it has a Sun-like star with two giant planets in orbit. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="75860057" title="In a fiery swirl of orange gas, a new planet is born — witnessed by astronomers for the very first time" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> Dubbed TYC 8998-760-1, this system could help scientists understand how our own solar system came into existence. Only a handful of them have ever been directly photographed. When it comes to capturing two or more exoplanets, a mere two system systems have been directly observed. Other bright dots, which are background stars, are visible in the image as well. &amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> “This discovery is a snapshot of an environment that is very similar to our solar system, but at a much earlier stage of its evolution,” said <a href="https://www.eso.org/public/news/eso2011/">Alexander Bohn</a>, who led the research project published in <a href="https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/2041-8213/aba27e">The Astrophysical Journal Letters</a>. “Direct observations are important in the search for environments that can support life,” added co-author Matthew Kenworthy. Further and heavier One of the two gas giants is orbiting the Star at 160 times the distance between the Sun and Earth. The other is around 320 times further. But when you compare the distance to the gas giants in our solar system — Jupiter and Saturn — the distance is only 5 and 10 times greater, respectively. It’s not the distance between the star and its planets that are further but the exoplanets are also much heavier than Jupiter and Saturn. The inner planet has 14 times Jupiter's mass and the outer planet is six times denser. “The possibility that future instruments, such as those available on the ELT [Extremely Large Telescope], will be able to detect even lower-mass planets around this star marks an important milestone in understanding multi-planet systems, with potential implications for the history of our own Solar System,” said Bohn. The ELT is expected to be ready for use in 2025. It will have the potential to test whether these planets formed at their current location and so far away from their stars or if they migrated from somewhere else.
