The total value of Rs 2,000 banknotes in circulation, which was Rs 3.56 lakh crore at the close of business on May 19, 2023, when the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 banknotes was announced, has declined to Rs 7,261 crore at the close of business on August 30, 2024, the RBI said. "Thus, 97.96 % of the Rs 2,000 banknotes in circulation as on May 19, 2023, has since been returned," it said in a statement. The facility for deposit and/or exchange of the Rs 2,000 banknotes was available at all bank branches in the country till October 7, 2023. The facility for the exchange of the Rs 2,000 banknotes has been available at the 19 issue offices of the <keyword id="19922074" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reserve-bank" source="keywords">Reserve Bank</keyword> since May 19, 2023. Hansa Research Group, Mumbai has been engaged to conduct the survey of this round on behalf of the RBI over telephone instead of the regular personal interview mode in view of the pandemic. "For this purpose, the selected households will be approached by the agency and they are requested to provide their response over telephone," the release said. The survey aims at capturing subjective assessments on price movements and inflation, of approximately 6,000 households, based on their individual consumption baskets, across 18 cities. Also, the function of providing your mobile number if the one-time password (OTP) will be sent on the email ID seems redundant. Users should have the option of providing one or the other. Necessitating both seems like an unnecessary load on data collection. The <keyword id="10824384" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="limitations-of-carbonwatch">limitations of CarbonWatch</keyword> While obviously helping a person gauge their carbon footprint and how their activities affect the environment around them, the CarbonWatch mobile app is not the most user-friendly — not in terms of the user interface, but the calculations. For instance, the carbon footprint score does not change even when you adjust the number of family members in a single household. This means the details of water consumption, electricity use, and gas consumption are not averaged out. The overall score is not for an individual, but the entire household. The app also only shows the latest recorded emission score. There is no historical data or a way to keep track of whether your emission score has gone up or down if you’ve changed the input values. Comparative charts and the ability to export data would go a long way in helping people track their progress. <div type="image" title="carbonwatch (1)" msid="81203730" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;CarbonWatch only displays the most recently recorded carbon emission score&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> For instance, your electricity and water consumption is likely to be higher during the summer than during the winter months — but there is no way for me, as an individual, to track that change and the resulting effect on my carbon footprint within the app. The app also does not let you take screenshots. This means the only way for you to track the changes in your carbon footprint is to note down the score manually or take pictures using secondary devices. Now, about the actual inputs. CarbonWatch asks users for their average units of freshwater billed per month in kilolitres. That means you need to have your utility bill on hand. There are no comparative guidelines on how you may be able to gauge your consumption based on how many buckets of water you use per month. The reason this is important is because not everyone rents an entire house, especially students or bachelors. They usually have a single room or only a part of the house for use. Hence, they may not necessarily have access to the utility bill. And, even if they do have access to it, the entire consumption of water does not rest on their shoulders. The same applies to the consumption of electricity. It would be easier if the app asked users what kind of lights they use (LED, CFL or other ordinary bulbs), how many are in the room or house, and how many hours, on average, they are switched on for. And, while it is useful to ask whether or not a user is segregating their waste, the app doesn’t ask for an estimate of how much waste is being produced in the first place. A score of 6.61 fairly high. And, the only basis of comparison is worldwide averages. In our case, it was much higher than India’s average of 1.81 or even the global average of 4.74 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. <div type="image" title="carbonwatch" msid="81203744" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Carbon footprint score is only compared to global averages&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> While helpful, it would be better if the consumption could be compared according to the locality you live in. It would help you gauge if others in your area have a similar carbon footprint or not. If not, it would be more insightful to know what other households are doing differently than have general guidelines thrown up on the screen. CarbonWatch — India’s first mobile app to calculate your carbon footprint falls short of its promises

Mumbai, Apr 25 () At least 328 entities across sectors, including state-owned and those backed by big conglomerates, have opted for availing the Reserve Bank's three-month moratorium on their debt repayments, rating agency Icra said on Saturday.The list of entities, rated by it, include Air India Express, ONGC Petro Additions, entities from Tata Group, JSW Group and GMR Group.On March 27, the RBI had given borrowers a three-month moratorium on debt repayments for the March-May period due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a voluntary measure and interest keeps accruing on the loan during the period of moratorium, and experts have opined that such a move would generally elongate the loan repayment period.Icra said it is disclosing the names of the entities as per a mandate received from Sebi, and made it clear that missed payment by these entities even in the case of pending formal approval from the lending institutions prior to the original due date, is not considered an instance of default.Air India Express having a debt of Rs 1,301 crore, and ONGC Petro Additions - which had debt of Rs 33,180 crore and USD 155 million in foreign borrowings, have opted for the moratorium on its loans, the agency said.Interglobe Hotels, with debt of Rs 811 crore, and having its outlook on rating revised to negative earlier this month due to worries on the hospitality sectors, has also opted for the moratorium, it said, adding that other hospitality sector companies, including Lemon Tree Hotels, and Barbeque Nation Hospitality have also sought relief.Among the financiers, city-based Centrum Financial Services, Creditaccess Grameen, Indostar Capital Finance, Madhura Micro Finance and Spandana Sphoorty Financial have opted for delays in their repayment of their debt commitments - like on commercial paper borrowings, even as banks are yet to arrive on whether to accord the relief to the NBFCs.Entities in the GMR Group, including GMR Ambala Chandigarh Expressways (Rs 240 crore debt) and GMR Hyderabad Aviation SEZ (Rs 58 crore) have opted for the moratorium provided by the RBI, it said.Similarly, three entities in the Sajjan Jindal-led JSW Group also seem to have opted for the moratorium, including JSW Steel (Rs 71,952 crore debt), the unlisted JSW Paints (Rs 160 crore), the agency said.Tata Group entities, including Tata Power (Rs 7,231 crore debt), Taj GVK Hotels and Resorts (Rs 195 crore), and Tata Power Renewable Energy, have opted for the relaxations, it said.Billionaire Ajay Piramal-led companies, including the flagship Piramal Enterprises and Piramal Capital and Housing Finance (nearly Rs 30,000 crore debt) have also opted for the relaxation offered by the central bank, as per the data disclosed by Icra.Kalyan Jewellers having an outstanding debt of Rs 3,555 crore as of September 2019, and private sector milk operator Parag Milk Foods, which had a debt of Rs 390 crore, have decided for opting for the leeway on debt repayments, the agency said. About 328 entities opt for RBI's 3-month moratorium: Icra

Mumbai, Jan 21 () The RBI has started making public minutes of its board meetings as part of its exercise to enhance transparency regarding its functioning and also to obviate the need of asking for such details under the Right to Information Act (RTI Act), the central bank said.
To begin with, the central bank shared the minutes of meeting of its Central Board of Directors held in Chandigarh in October last year, though it blacked out certain portions.
 In a statement, the RBI said it has been, over the years, taking steps to enhance transparency with regard to its functioning. 
"The minutes of the meetings of the RBI's Central Board of Directors (Central Board) have evinced considerable public interest and some of these have been shared with persons who sought them under the Right to Information Act 2005 (RTI Act)," it said. 
As a measure of further enhancing public awareness, the RBI said it has been decided to place the minutes of the meetings of the Central Board on the RBI's website as per the RTI Act, "after appropriately severing information that is permitted to be severed as per the Act". 
It further that in future, the minutes will be placed on the website within two weeks from the date of its confirmation in the next meeting of the Central Board and on being signed by the chairman in the same meeting.
As per the minutes of October meeting chaired by Governor Shaktikanta Das, the Board discussed in detail the situation in the financial sector with special focus on the regulatory and supervisory architecture of commercial and cooperative banks as also NBFCs.
The 579th meeting the Board took up a host of issues, including sitting fees payable to directors of the board and members of the local RBI boards. NKD CS MR

RBI starts making public minutes of its board meetings

Chandigarh, Jun 29 (PTI) The <keyword id="6354679" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gst" source="Orion">GST</keyword> Council on Wednesday deferred decision on levying a 28 per cent tax on casinos, online gaming, horse racing and lottery pending more consultations with stakeholders, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said. A group of ministers headed by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has been asked to consider submissions of stakeholders again on the valuation mechanism and submit its report by July 15, she told reporters here. The council will meet again in the first week of August to decide on the issue, she said. A two-day meeting of the panel considered a report of the GoM but deferred a decision as Goa and some others wanted to make more submissions. The GoM had recommended that online gaming should be taxed at the full value of the consideration, including the contest entry fee paid by the player on participating in the game. As per Anarock data, in the first nine months of 2022, affordable housing supply reduced to 21% of the 2.65 lakh units launched in the top 7 cities during this period. In contrast, in the pre-Covid year of 2019, this segment had the highest supply share with 40% of the 2.36 lakh units launched in the top 7 cities that year. “Affordable housing had a lean time, with more buyers in this segment going into wait-and-watch mode; unsurprisingly, new supply in this category reduced markedly,” said Anuj Puri, chairman of <keyword id="6596330" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="anarock-group" source="Orion">Anarock Group</keyword>. Grade A developers – who are well-known developers with reputed clients like MNCs and high-networth individuals – had more market share in 2022. About 60% of the 2.65 lakh units launched in the first three quarters of the year was by branded developers - who also sold more than 55% of the 2.73 lakh units purchased in this period. Plotted developments also gained momentum in 2022, especially in south Indian cities of Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad. “Plot buyers have taken a futuristic investment perspective and are betting on the superior and safer long-term ROI (return on investment) of land over built-up properties. Many large developers catered to this demand in 2022,” said Puri. Suburbs also were also popular among homebuyers. Anarock’s consumer sentiment survey found that over 42% of the consumers continued to prefer peripheral/suburban areas where they can buy bigger homes with better lifestyle amenities at lower prices. Even though a 21-day lock down was enforced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, select branches will remain operational to provide citizens with essential services.

 Even before the lockdown was called on March 24, banks were already finding innovative ways to implement social distancing. Many roped up counters and desks to keep at least a meter of distance between branch officers and customers. Hand sanitizers have also been placed at all windows, outside the branch and at ATMs. The Indian Bank’s Association (IBA) has asked all banks to maintain at least four services for its customers: <ul><li>Cash deposits and withdrawal</li><li>Clearing cheques</li><li>Remittances</li><li>Government transactions</li></ul>

 Even though banks are an essential service, some bankers aren’t being allowed to leave their home by state authorities, according to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). To address the situation the Ministry of Finance has written to the chief secretaries of all states to allow the physical movement of bank employees.

 “It is expected that people’s need for and reliance on electronic and digital modes of payment, and ATMs for cash withdrawals, will be greater in the days to come,” said the letter by Madnesh Kumar Mishra, joint secretary to the government of India.

 In Chandigarh, the administration has issued a list of 27 branches that will be allowed to stay open even though there’s a curfew imposed on the city. In Mumbai, where a curfew has also been imposed, government-owned Bank of Baroda is reimbursing its employees with ₹200 a day to cover their transit costs as public transportation shut down.

 Canara Bank took a different approach. It is going to credit each employee’s salary with an extra ₹1,000 at the end of the month for sanitizer, masks and other sanitary supply expenditures.
