On May 19, 2023, the RBI announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 denomination banknotes from circulation. The total value of Rs 2,000 banknotes in circulation, which was Rs 3.56 lakh crore at the close of business on May 19, 2023, when the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 banknotes was announced, has declined to Rs 7,261 crore at the close of business on August 30, 2024, the RBI said. "Thus, 97.96 % of the Rs 2,000 banknotes in circulation as on May 19, 2023, has since been returned," it said in a statement. The facility for deposit and/or exchange of the Rs 2,000 banknotes was available at all bank branches in the country till October 7, 2023. The facility for the exchange of the Rs 2,000 banknotes has been available at the 19 issue offices of the <keyword id="19922074" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reserve-bank" source="keywords">Reserve Bank</keyword> since May 19, 2023. From October 9, 2023, RBI issue offices are also accepting Rs 2000 banknotes from individuals and entities for deposit into their bank accounts. Further, members of the public are sending Rs 2,000 banknotes through India Post from any post office within the country to any of the RBI issue offices for credit to their bank accounts. The 19 RBI offices depositing/exchanging the banknotes are in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram. Rs 2000 banknotes were introduced in November 2016, following the demonetisation of the then-prevailing Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 banknotes. However, even after their discontinuation, Rs 2,000 notes continue to remain legal tender. Per the apex bank's last update, which came out on August 1st, 2024, Rs 2,000 banknotes had declined to Rs 7409 crore at the close of business on July 31, 2024. Thus, by last month, 97.92% of the Rs 2,000 banknotes which were in circulation as on May 19, 2023, had been returned.

People can deposit and/or exchange Rs 2,000 bank notes at the 19 RBI offices across the country. Public and entities holding such notes were initially asked to either exchange or deposit them in bank accounts by September 30, 2023. The deadline was later extended to October 7, 2023. Deposit and exchange services at bank branches were discontinued on October 7, 2023. Starting October 8, 2023, individuals have been provided with the choice of either exchanging the currency or having the equivalent sum credited to their bank accounts at the 19 offices of the RBI. The season of roses at BLR Airport brought cheer once again with a 14 per cent increase in rose shipments processed compared to last year. New Delhi, May 19 () The Enforcement Directorate has attached assets worth Rs 18.5 crore, including over two dozen plots and some SUVs, in connection with a money laundering probe linked to an alleged bank fraud in Chandigarh, the agency said on Tuesday. The action has been taken against a person identified as Vikram Seth and his family members, who the agency claimed that connived with other accused and Bank of Baroda officials in "fraudulently" getting sanctioned 19 loans amounting to Rs 21.31 crore. The ED issued a provisional order under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) for attachment of 20 residential and six industrial plots, a house, three agricultural lands, two brick kilns and 10 commercial plots valued at Rs 18.17 crore in Phagwara and Banga in Punjab and Amb town of Una district in Himachal Pradesh. The seven movable properties include an assortment of SUVs like Tata Safari, Honda Jazz and Skoda Octavia worth Rs 33 lakh, it said. The ED case is based on a CBI FIR lodged in 2015. "The loan amounts were routed through various accounts of associated firms and companies and other fraudulent firms by the accused through a web of transactions and ultimately the amounts were siphoned off," the central agency claimed. The probe found that Seth had "routed" the loan amounts through many bank accounts. After multiple layering of the proceeds of crime, the amount was found to be invested in acquiring assets in the name of his wife, son, brother and brother's wife. 'These family members did not have any legitimate source of income to acquire such immovable assets," the ED charged. It said a probe in the case is on. NES DPB

Chandigarh, May 4 () Employees of Minerva Academy have voluntarily donated blood as the Chandigarh Blood Bank faces severe shortages due to the cancellation of many donation camps.A total of 15 staff members of the Minerva Academy donated blood while exercising social distancing and other essential hygiene practices. Minerva Academy owner Ranjit Bajaj said, "Blood donation is amongst the highest contributions rendered towards humanity, and in difficult times like this we will engage, try to serve the society in whatever ways possible. "We are all aware that the coronavirus pandemic is interrupting blood donation drives and the National Blood Transfusion Council (NBTC) has issued recommendations emphasizing that voluntary blood donation and blood collection should continue judiciously even during the health crisis in order to ensure its availability." The nationwide lockdown to combat the COVID-19 pandemic has been extended till May 17.
