New Delhi, Apr 18 () COVID-19 will reboot the world into virtual reality and after the crisis, work from home models are likely to continue and business travel is likely to be curtailed as virtual meetings have proved to be just as effective, Biocon Executive Chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw on Saturday said. In a blog post, she said mobile and internet banking have also seen a surge since the viral outbreak. The new world order will now become a virtual reality, she added. "The seismic events unleashed by the COVID-19 pandemic will have a powerful impact on the world we live in, changing it in ways we had never imagined were possible. The economic damage is likely to be unprecedented," Mazumdar-Shaw said. The world economy, worth USD 90 trillion at the start of the current financial year, would have lost USD 5 trillion and moved into recession by the time the next financial year starts, she added. "COVID-19 is the reboot button that will trigger a system-wide overhaul. A year from now, the world we will live in will be very different. It will impact how we live, how we work, and how we use technology," Mazumdar-Shaw said. To quote a recent McKinsey report, "In this unprecedented new reality, we will witness a dramatic restructuring of the economic and social order in which business and society have traditionally operated," she added. This COVID-19 outbreak is a lesson that technology has many faces and being besotted with only one application of computational science is dangerous, Mazumdar-Shaw said. "For humanity to survive, we will need a multi-disciplinary approach to advancing science and technology, combining biotechnology, biomedical technologies, biological sciences, environmental sciences, etc," she added. The novel coronavirus has exposed the huge shortcomings in public healthcare systems, especially in developed countries where they have largely remained static since World War II, she added. Mazumdar-Shaw said the governments will have to bring in policies to address essential healthcare infrastructure, strategic reserves of key supplies, and contingency planning for medical equipment, diagnostics, drugs and vaccines. Investors were disappointed by the 26% fall in profit to ₹167.8 crore ⁠— despite a 14% rise in revenue⁠— between April and June 2020 compared to a year earlier. However, the shares of its subsidiary Syngene, the integrated research, development and manufacturing company, where Biocon owns 70% stake, is up and about with gains of over 5%— the rally is close to 13% in the last two days. <div type="image" title="BIocon" msid="77146419" hostid="261"></div> The pain in Biocon Biocon, executive chairperson, <keyword id="6413985" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="kiran-mazumdar-shaw">Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw</keyword> said, “Profitability for the quarter was impacted due to higher R&amp;D spend, lower profit share in the biosimilars business, and lower profitability in the research services segment.” The company spent 35% more on the research and development as the COVID-19 pandemic peaked. However, research services (which made for a quarter of the company’s revenue) didn’t grow at all. Margins held steady at 32%, driven by savings in raw material costs and certain operational efficiencies. Biocon shares are depressed itself but Syngene can offer a shot of hope

New Delhi, May 30 () A safe Vaccine to prevent COVID-19 could take a very long time to be ready, so there is a need to deal with the pandemic for next few years and invest more in healthcare, Biocon Executive Chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw said on Saturday. She was speaking in a webinar on 'Pharma and Healthcare's New Normal: Engaging With Customers in Uncertain Times; Business Model Post-COVID-19', organised by CorpGini. "...We believe that it will take a very long time before you can actually have a safe vaccine that can be accessible to the entire country. We must understand that vaccine development is a very complex process. Shortest time taken for any vaccine is not less than 4 years," Mazumdar-Shaw said. Trying to develop vaccine in less than a year is a very daunting and almost impossible task. Vaccine development involves a large number of processes to establish the safety, efficacy and endurance of the vaccine, she added. "We need to deal with this pandemic for the next few years before we really get a reliable vaccine... We need to invest much more in healthcare. If this pandemic has exposed one ugly truth about every country, not just India, it is about the appalling state of public and primary healthcare, appalling state of under investing in healthcare," Mazumdar-Shaw said. Healthcare is a capital intensive sector, it is a skill intensive sector, it is a employment generation sector, she added. "There needs to be a very systematic data led approach to see how can we deal with the infection and keep people safe," Mazumdar-Shaw said. This is one opportunity for us to invest in healthcare infrastructure, because this what will save India and the world, she added. In similar vein, Apollo Hospitals MD Suneeta Reddy said: "This pandemic has clearly shown us the need for medical infrastructure. There needs to be an investment in healthcare, not only in infrastructure but also in skilling". Impetus given to the IT sector needs to be given to the healthcare sector to create additional infrastructure, she added. We hope the government considers healthcare as next IT sector, Reddy said.
