State-run Convergence Energy Services Ltd (<keyword id="10463872" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="cesl" source="Orion">CESL</keyword>) on Thursday launched the biggest ever tender worth about Rs 5,500 crore to procure as many as 5,580 electric buses including 130 double deckers. CESL, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), on Thursday announced the floating of a request for proposals for the biggest ever demand for electric buses, under the '<keyword id="3770942" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="grand-challenge" source="Orion">Grand Challenge</keyword>' -- a set of homogenized demand for electric buses aggregated across five major cities, according to a statement. It said the tender value is estimated to be Rs 5,500 crore. The cities to be covered under this "Grand Challenge" are Bangalore, Delhi, Surat, Hyderabad, and Kolkata in the first phase. The first lot of e-buses are expected to hit the roads by July this year, it added. Through this 'Grand Challenge', CESL aims to deploy 5,450 single decker buses and 130 double decker buses. "This <keyword id="12993980" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="grand-challenge-tender" source="Orion">Grand Challenge Tender</keyword> represents efforts by so many people STUs, OEMs, financiers, <keyword id="2665691" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="niti-aayog" source="Orion">Niti Aayog</keyword>, DHI and of course my colleagues. This is the biggest ever scheme in the world, and is based on an innovative, asset-light model that makes it possible for STUs to deploy affordably and at scale," Mahua Acharya, MD &amp; CEO, CESL said. CESL intends to enhance its support to state governments in achieving their electric mobility targets as well as further build an infrastructure for electric mobility in the country. "Standardizing tendering conditions in diverse cities is a big step towards the transformation of public transport in India. Participation in the Grand Challenge is a commendable effort from STUs, who I am sure will stand to gain from economies of scale through the aggregation of demand by CESL," Amitabh Kant, CEO, NITI Aayog said. This is seen as a big step in the series of initiatives to fulfill the commitments made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for making India a Net Zero nation by 2050 and getting closer to achieving <keyword id="407916" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="energy-independence" source="Orion">Energy Independence</keyword> by 2047, the statement said. "I am pleased to announce today that Delhi has requested 1,500 buses under the Grand Challenge and stands ready to offer state subsidies where they are required. We are aggressively pursuing electric mobility and I commend CESL for its efforts to standardize the terms and conditions for how this is delivered," Kailash Gahlot, Transport &amp; Environment Minister of Delhi said. The benefits of participating in the Grand Challenge include lower prices realized due to aggregate demand, high quality benchmarked technology, access to FAME-II incentives, access to state incentives, air quality improvement, and access to domestic and international sources of finances. Keeping in mind the changing environment, where climate change related issues and energy independence have turned the focus on EVs, CESL will later be expanding support to more cities. The <keyword id="20163832" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="society-of-indian-automobile" source="keywords">Society of Indian Automobile</keyword> Manufacturers (<keyword id="108827" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="siam" source="Orion">SIAM</keyword>) and big auto players have hailed the Cabinet decision of PM e-DRIVE schemes aimed at promoting electric mobility across the country. The Rs 10,900 crore scheme will support 2,479,000 electric 2-wheelers, 316,000 electric 3-wheelers and 14,028 electric buses, along with 88,500 <keyword id="186291" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ev" source="Orion">EV</keyword> charging sites. Shailesh Chandra, President of SIAM and Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd &amp; Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd, expressed strong support for the government's forward-thinking initiative. Chandra said, "This forward-thinking initiative reflects the Government's unwavering support for <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword>'s transition to electric mobility, fostering innovation and investment within the sector. We believe this scheme will not only enhance the growth of the EV ecosystem but also strengthen India's leadership in the global movement towards environmental sustainability." Dr Anish Shah, Group CEO &amp; MD, Mahindra Group also commended government's efforts, specifically highlighting the comprehensive nature of the PM e-DRIVE scheme. Shah said, "We applause the government for launching the PM e-drive scheme. With continued focused support on 2Ws, 3Ws, e-buses and thoughtful addition of e-ambulances, the scheme will drive higher EV penetration in the country." M&amp;M noted that schemes like <keyword id="21028" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fame" source="Orion">FAME</keyword> and <keyword id="48070" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="emps" source="Orion">EMPS</keyword> have already driven penetration of electric three-wheelers in India. "Investments laid out for fast charging infrastructure for all segments will help in increasing consumer confidence for faster adoption of EVs. FAME and EMPS have helped in 20 per cent e-3W penetration in the country. With PM e-drive, we foresee India becoming the first country to achieve 100 per cent electrification in this segment by 2030", he added. The Union Cabinet, on Wednesday, cleared the 'PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM e-DRIVE) Scheme,' with a total outlay of Rs 10,900 crore over two years. It includes Rs 3,679 crore in subsidies and demand incentives for e-2Ws, e-3Ws, e-ambulances, e-trucks, and other emerging electric vehicles. It is expected to support the deployment of 24.79 lakh e-2Ws, 3.16 lakh e-3Ws, and 14,028 e-buses, providing a significant push to India's EV ecosystem. A critical aspect of the scheme is the introduction of e-vouchers for EV buyers. At the time of purchase, an Aadhaar-authenticated e-voucher will be generated, which will enable buyers to avail of demand incentives. Additionally, the scheme allocates Rs 500 crore for the deployment of e-ambulances, marking a new initiative to integrate electric vehicles into essential public services. Another Rs 4,391 crore has been earmarked for the procurement of 14,028 e-buses, with a demand aggregation process led by CESL in nine major cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore. Intercity and interstate e-buses will also be supported in consultation with states. Furthermore, Rs 500 crore has been set aside to incentivize the adoption of e-trucks, a critical move given that trucks are one of the largest contributors to air pollution. The scheme encourages those with a scrapping certificate from <keyword id="19897457" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ministry-of-road-transport" source="keywords">Ministry of Road Transport</keyword> and Highways-approved (MoRTH) vehicle scrapping centres to participate in this transition. With an allocation of Rs 2,000 crore, the scheme will support the installation of 22,100 fast chargers for four-wheelers, 1,800 fast chargers for e-buses, and 48,400 fast chargers for two- and three-wheelers. These chargers will be installed in cities with high EV penetration and along selected highways, making long-distance EV travel more viable.

Automobile industry hails PM e-DRIVE scheme to promote EVs

India on Thursday successfully carried out test fire of <keyword id="42900" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="brahmos" source="Orion">Brahmos</keyword> missile with enhanced capabilities. The <keyword id="152819" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="defence-research-and-development-organisation" source="Orion">Defence Research and Development Organisation</keyword> (DRDO) in a statement said that Brahmos supersonic cruise missile with increased indigenous content and improved performance was successfully test fired at 10.30 a.m. from <keyword id="58540" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="integrated-test-range" source="Orion">Integrated Test Range</keyword>, Chandipur off the coast of Odisha. The launch was conducted by <keyword id="129898" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="brahmos-aerospace" source="Orion">Brahmos Aerospace</keyword> in close coordination with DRDO teams. In this text book flight, the missile followed the predicted trajectory, meeting all mission objectives. The flight test is a major milestone in the way forward for Brahmos programme. The highly manouverable missile cruised at supersonic speed for its maximum range and all mission objectives were met. The missile was equipped with the advanced indigenous technologies and followed a modified optimal trajectory for enhanced efficiency and improved performance. The missile with the modified control system has been fine tuned to achieve an enhanced capability. This flight test was monitored by all the sensors of the range instrumentation including telemetry, radar and electro-optical tracking systems deployed across the eastern coast and the down range ships. Teams from DRDO and NPOM Russia participated in the test. Brahmos Aerospace the Joint Venture between India's DRDO and Russia's NPOM has been continuously upgrading the powerful, highly versatile BrahMos to increase its effectiveness and lethality against sea and land targets. Brahmos is the potent missile weapon system already inducted into the Armed Forces. Defence Minister <keyword id="6355121" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rajnath-singh" source="Orion">Rajnath Singh</keyword> complimented the Brahmos, DRDO teams and industry for the successful flight test. G. Satheesh Reddy, Chairman DRDO, appreciated the scientists and engineers for continuously putting efforts to maximise the weapon systems efficiency and more focus on indigenous content.
