But weirdly, the cigarettes themselves didn't really look good. </p><p>"We lived with such decorated and embellished surroundings," she told Business Insider. "But one of the only unembellished items in view was the packet of cigarettes." </p><p>This was, of course, a bother. Di Carcaci grew up surrounded by beautiful surroundings. Her grandmother is British socialite and countess, Raine Spencer, who was married to Earl John Spencer, the maternal grandfather of Prince William and Prince Harry, and di Carcaci's great grandmother is Dame Barbara Cartland, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2000/05/22/books/barbara-cartland-98-best-selling-author-who-prized-old-fashioned-romance-dies.html">a prolific author of over 700 books</a>. </p><p>The 25-year-old di Carcaci came across a lot of people who smoke, she said, after starting her career in fashion publicity, working for Love and Paper magazines, and a stint at the designer label Vivienne Westwood.</p><p>In May 2019, she took the money she saved from her career in fashion and launched the high-end cigarette accessories <a href="https://www.smokingjacket.london/">Smoking Jacket</a>, seeking to fill the gap in the market for luxury smoking accessories.</p><p>The company makes decorated cigarette cases that use printed fabrics such as ruby gingham or erté leopard, with the brand aesthetic taking inspiration from artists such as Henri Matisse and sculptor Jean Alps. </p><p>She acknowledged to Business Insider that smoking is a morally weighty issue, but she said it existed long before her company, adding that she considers herself a social smoker. "We are catering to established smokers whose decisions have already been made. I am not assuming a moral stance, but rather an aesthetic one."</p><div type="image" title="Smoking Jacket" height="1208" width="1766" msid="79646025" hostid="261"></div><p>She targets high-end locations to sell in, and some big names have taken notice. For instance, the company has worked with luxury fashion line The Row, launched by the Olsen Twins in 2006. </p><p>It's also sold in the exclusive private member club 5 Hertford Street in London as well as at the Alex Eagle store in London's Soho and Jean Louis La Nuit in Paris. </p><p>It's become quite popular. <a href="https://www.instagram.com/sabinegetty/?hl=en">Sabine Getty</a>, a jewelry designer married to a member of the Getty family, <a href="https://www.tatler.com/gallery/rich-european-socialites-in-london">is a fan</a>, as are <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/B1VheMNhebg/">Vogue Editor-at-Large Hamish Bowls</a> and <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CGFq0cthzOC/">Tommy Dorfman</a> from the series "13 Reasons Why."</p><p>Cigarette cases do their own advertising, di Carcaci said, especially stylish ones. "It's such a social product," she said. "People have their cases with them, and [then] it becomes a talking point," di Carcaci said. </p><p>Even non-smokers love the cases and use them as jewelry boxes and cardholders, she said. </p><p>The business is profitable, she said, and in an interview with Business Insider, she talks about her luxury smoking brand and her plans to expand it into a full-service lifestyle company. </p><h2><strong>Smoking Jacket creates luxury smoking accessories that has some high-profile clients</strong></h2><p>The company's high-end cigarette pack cases are embellished with fabrics inspired by everything ranging from commedia dell'arte characters to Prince songs, and come in linen dust bags as di Carcaci sought to "avoid all plastic packaging."</p><p>Di Carcaci makes the cases by herself and only outsources talent when she has to, such as photographers, web designers, and accountants. She said she's lucky not to have much overhead, as low operating costs allow for higher profit margins. </p><div type="image" title="Smoking Jacket" height="810" width="1080" msid="79646029" hostid="261"></div><p>She also creates chains for e-cigarette smokers, so customers can attach the e-cigarette magnetically and wear it as a pendant. </p><p>"People [also] use them as portable jewelry boxes to keep in their handbags," di Carcaci said. "They are also the perfect size to store credit cards and cash." </p><p><a href="https://www.instagram.com/smokingjacket.london/">The brand uses Instagram</a> for marketing, often posting photos of Henri Matisse paintings, vintage <keyword id="6361871" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tobacco">tobacco</keyword> trading cards, and photos of di Carcaci posing in outfits that match the cigarette cases. Instagram is how many of her clients find the company, di Carcaci said, plus word of mouth. </p><p>Next year, she will start her official expansion into the US markets with a collaboration done with ASH NYC, which owns hotels in locations such as New Orleans and Detroit. "I'm making them custom matchboxes for their new hotel," she said.  </p><div type="image" title="Smoking Jacket" height="3124" width="2050" msid="79646031" hostid="261"></div><h2><strong>Deluxe cigarette packaging for the Instagram age </strong></h2><p>Her latest partnership is with London-based ceramist <a href="https://www.instagram.com/almaberrow/">Alama Berrow</a>, best known for creating <a href="https://www.almaberrow.com/">one-of-a-kind ashtrays and home-inspired objects</a>. </p><p>Berrow told Business Insider she met di Carcaci a few years ago, when they were both working for a startup, and always stayed in touch. </p><p>"When I started making [ashtrays], she was incredibly supportive of my art and actually bought some of my first ever pieces," Berrow said. "She proposed a collaboration which, to me, sounded like a glorious idea." </p><div type="image" title="Smoking Jacket" height="966" width="994" msid="79646032" hostid="261"></div><p>Unlike di Carcaci, Berrow said she actually does smoke a lot - granted, she is trying to quit and is torn on the industry in which she participates.</p><p>"I think quite rightfully smoking has a negative stigma attached to it," Berrow said. "People, especially big companies can't be seen to be endorsing that." </p><p>"Making ashtrays, I thought, would help," she said. </p><p>Berrow said there is a nostalgic interest in buying smoking accessories for some people. "Be it for a current smoker, a quitter, or a parent [and] grandparent that smoked," she continued. </p><div type="image" title="Smoking Jacket" height="984" width="982" msid="79646034" hostid="261"></div><p>Some might argue that rather than exuding coolness, <a href="https://filtermag.org/how-widespread-anti-smoker-stigma-is-harmful-as-well-as-wrong/">smoking for this generation is, instead, a very stigmatized act</a> - more so today than ever before. </p><p>Even with the known risks, smoking was often seen <a href="https://www.racked.com/2017/4/5/15076078/fashion-smoking-cigarettes">inside glossy high-fashion magazines</a> as recently as the 1990s. And who can forget those Old Hollywood movies, when actresses would pull out their ornate cigarette cases, and actors would smoke cigars to add an edge to their characters. That is a world Smoking Jacket harkens back to, but the market is much smaller now.</p><p>In the UK, where Smoking Jacket is based, about 14.7% of people aged 18 and over smoked as of 2018, down about 5% since 2011, <a href="https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/healthandsocialcare/healthandlifeexpectancies/bulletins/adultsmokinghabitsingreatbritain/2018">the UK's Office for National Statistics reported</a>, while the market is roughly the same in the US, where 14% of the population 18 and older smokes, per <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/data_statistics/fact_sheets/adult_data/cig_smoking/index.htm">CDC data</a>, down from 20.9% in 2005. </p><p>In the UK, the average smoker spends <a href="https://smoko.com/blogs/news/smoking-costs-uk-12-6-billion-a-year">£3,300 a year on cigarettes</a>. Fourteen percent of smokers over the age of 18 in the UK equates to 7.2 million people, meaning a $24 million potential market for accessories that will hold cigarette packs, Business Insider estimates.  </p><p>The average smoker in the US spends <a href="https://www.umassmed.edu/globalassets/center-for-mental-health-services-research/documents/products-publications/posters/wellness/incorporating_tobacco_cessation.pdf">about $1,887</a> on cigarettes each year. Fourteen percent of the US population is about 34.1 million smokers, which equates to a $64 billion market potential for accessories that will hold cigarette packs.</p><div type="image" title="Smoking Jacket" height="2063" width="2751" msid="79646035" hostid="261"></div><h2><strong>Di Carcaci has plans beyond high-end smoking accessories </strong></h2><p>Di Carcaci has wanted to open Smoking Jacket since she was 21 but says she wasn't "quite ready to start" to venture out on her own, "even though I kind of knew it was something I wanted to pursue in the future."</p><p>She now wants to use her training in art and design, and launch something big: she wants to make Smoking Jacket into just one division of a larger lifestyle company, calling it a "lockdown" project she has been working on.</p><p>"I have extra money that I am reinvesting in the new products I'm designing," she said. "I am currently working on a collection of design objects, including tapestries and plates and other objects."</p><p>She's been working out of her flat since Smoking Jacket launched. She's not minded, even though the pandemic delayed her plans to expand into an office space in March. Now, she said, "I don't have to pay for rent."   </p><p>With all this going on, it seems di Carcaci could use for some winding-down time, or at least a smoke break. </p><p>"I'm a social smoker, I smoke on weekends or when I'm dressing up and going to meet friends," she said. "Which isn't an option as of late." </p>

A 25-year-old set her eyes on taking over the high-end smoking accessories market - and it's working

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Mirazur is a three Michelin-starred restaurant located in the town of Menton, <keyword id="6354785" type="LOCATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="france">France</keyword>, that was ranked as the World's Best Restaurant in 2019.</li><li>After the restaurant was forced to close in March for the country's 55-day lockdown due to the pandemic, head <keyword id="3699" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Chef">chef</keyword> Mauro Colagreco spent time in the restaurant's gardens to develop a new <keyword id="62764" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Reopening">reopening</keyword> menu, says head sommelier Benoît Huguenin.</li><li>Chef Colagreco designed a new menu called Universe Mirazur, featuring meals that focus on four different themes (roots, fruits, flowers, and leaves) and is served to align with the lunar cycle.</li><li>The nine-course menu starts at <strong>€</strong>320, or USD$375, and rotates every three days at most, as does the biodynamic wine list.</li></ul><p>In June 2019 at the age of 24, Benoît Huguenin became the head sommelier at Mirazur, <a href="https://www.straitstimes.com/lifestyle/food/french-restaurant-mirazur-is-no-1-in-the-worlds-50-best-restaurants-2019">crowned the World's Best Restaurant of 2019</a>. He was by Argentinian chef Mauro Colagreco's side as Mirazur received the title in a glitzy ceremony in Singapore.</p><p>It topped off an incredible year for the restaurant located footsteps from the Italian border in Menton on the French Riviera: <a href="https://www.hospitalityandcateringnews.com/2019/01/restaurant-mirazur-awarded-ultimate-three-stars-michelin/">Five months earlier it had been awarded its third Michelin star</a>. Mauro Colagreco/Matteo Carassale/Business Insider" height="999" width="1356" msid="78721385" hostid="261"></div><p>Fast forward to spring 2020 and the whirlwind four-day trip from the Côte d'Azur to Singapore and back again last summer seemed more like a lifetime ago.</p><p>With Mirazur shuttered to the public during <a href="https://www.euronews.com/2020/05/09/france-spain-and-uk-prepare-to-ease-lockdowns-starting-monday">France's 55-day COVID-19 lockdown</a>, Huguenin's sole professional responsibility was in its kitchen, one of a team of six who had volunteered to prepare meals for local hospital workers three times a week. </p><h2><strong>Chef Colagreco spent much of the confinement </strong><a href="https://www.lotusinternational.net/news/mauro-colagreco-to-the-moon-and-back"><strong>tending to his gardens</strong></a><strong> that supply produce to the restaurant.</strong></h2><p>The time allowed the celebrated chef to slow down, reflect, and reconnect with nature, according to Huguenin. In late April, as the country prepared for the easing of lockdown measures, Colagreco gathered his team to discuss plans for reopening the restaurant. He also shared his observations of the last two months. </p><p>"The chef explained that, depending on the moon's cycle, some days the roots are different, as are the flowers, the leaves, and the fruits," Huguenin told Business Insider. "We spoke about this for three or so hours. He joked that maybe we should create a special menu around this."</p><div type="image" title="Mirazur's Chef Mauro Colagreco in the restaurant garden. Matteo Carassale photo" height="2664" width="3552" msid="78721390" hostid="261"></div><p>Two days later, Colagreco made it official: Mirazur would be opening with a new menu divided into four themes: roots, fruits, flowers, and leaves. Each day's theme would align with the lunar cycle. The intention was to bring the biodynamic principles practiced in the restaurant's gardens into the kitchen, allowing guests to experience what nature intended, when it intended it, as in at a specific point of the lunar cycle. Colagreco calls this concept "Universe Mirazur."</p><p>"We worked all day every day for two weeks to imagine and prepare it," Huguenin said. He says the wine list, the (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) cocktails, the <em>mignardises</em> (bite-sized desserts served at the end of the meal), and every detail down to the table decoration were all reimagined.</p><div type="image" title="On flower days, dishes like this Rosace de gamberoni de San Remo (rosace of San Remo prawns) may be on the menu" height="1878" width="2500" msid="78721393" hostid="261"></div><p>"We even changed up the olive oils that accompany the sharing breads, to keep on the same theme. On roots day, for example, we may serve ginger-infused oil. On fruit days, the oil may be infused with mandarin," he continued.</p><h2><strong>Despite being in the role since 2015, Huguenin feels like he's working in a completely different restaurant.</strong> </h2><p>Huguenin grew up near Châteauneuf-du-Pape, one of France's most famed wine regions in the southeast of the country, where his appreciation for the fine wines made on his doorstep was nurtured by his father. Having decided to pursue a career as a sommelier, a move to the Côte d'Azur and another of the region's decorated <keyword id="34615" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="restaurants">restaurants</keyword>, the now-defunct Paloma in Mougins, followed. He joined Colagreco's then two-Michelin-star establishment when he was 19.</p><p>"It's now more complex," Huguenin acknowledged. "For not only us but for the clients, even for the people who work in the gardens."</p><p>The nine-course <a href="https://www.mirazur.fr/reserver.php">Universe Mirazur menu</a> starts at $320 euros, or USD$375, and is changed every three days at most. (A further two are located two and seven miles away respectively). But, as Colagreco and his team worked to reimagine <keyword id="54972" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="fine-dining">fine dining</keyword> in the era of <keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="covid-19">COVID-19</keyword>, a decision was made to incorporate this alfresco setting into the dining experience. </p><p>"When clients arrive now, they are handed a mask and directed into the garden where they are served the aperitif," Huguenin explained. Beautifully plated and presented inside a picnic basket, it is designed to be enjoyed on a blanket carefully laid out at social distanced intervals. </p><p>"COVID has put a lot of pressure on everyone," Huguenin said. "We wanted to create this stress-free bubble where our clients can take off their mask and see the water, the beach, and the gardens."</p><div type="image" title="Mirazur Tomatoes and fish on fruit days (credit Matteo Carassale)" height="1878" width="2500" msid="78721399" hostid="261"></div><p>Once the aperitif is finished, guests are guided back inside the restaurant where tables have been redistributed between the living room and bar to ensure appropriate distancing while maintaining its 45 covers.</p><p>Floor staff wearing Mirazur and Michelin-liveried facemasks greet them (the kitchen team wear masks decorated with smiles — "for a bit of fun," Huguenin said). Having made a commitment to go plastic-free at the start of 2020, paper menus have also been swapped for QR codes and iPads.</p><p>Even hand sanitizing hasn't been spared an artistic touch. Colagreco enlisted <a href="http://www.ceramique-montalto.com/entest/">Stéphane Montalto</a>, a local ceramist and holder of the prestigious <em>Meilleur Ouvrier de France </em>title, to handcraft 16 ceramic bowls. Painted in a turquoise and ivory hue to evoke the color of the Mediterranean Sea at Mirazur's doorstep, each is filled with a touch of alcohol and a blend of ingredients that change to match the theme of the day. </p><div type="image" title="Mirazur's homemade hand sanitizer, coordinated for a flower-themed dinner." height="676" width="900" msid="78721402" hostid="261"></div><h2><strong>Three months after the restaurant — and its team of 60 — welcomed its first guests back to the dining room, certain rules are still enforced.</strong> </h2><p> "We have an alarm in the back office and in the kitchen that sounds every thirty minutes so that we can all wash our hands at the same time," Huguenin said.</p><div type="image" title="Mauro Colagreco and some of his team in smiley masks (credit Mirazur)" height="789" width="1053" msid="78721403" hostid="261"></div><p>Other rules have been slightly relaxed.</p><p>"At first, clients weren't able to go into the kitchen, but now we are more flexible. People can take a photo or greet the back of house team as long as they maintain social distancing," he explained. "We can't refuse clients everything." </p><h2><strong>Matching a wine menu to the lunar schedule is a fine art.</strong></h2><p>What pairings has Huguenin imagined up to accompany the four themes of Universe Mirazur? "It's weighted towards white wines," he explained. "For root days, I look to the Languedoc-Roussillon in France or the Alto Adige and Veneto regions in Italy to have more powerful wine like <a href="https://www.columbuswines.com/wines/2016-Italo-Cescon-Madre-w94969703l">Italo Cescon Madre 2016</a>."</p><div type="image" title="This beautifully presented squid dish is on Mirazur's leaf day menu. (credit Matteo Carassale)" height="1878" width="2500" msid="78721405" hostid="261"></div><p>"Flower days I tend more towards the Loire Valley and a Chenin Blanc or Sauvignon Blanc, or a Burgundian Chardonnay or Aligoté from <a href="https://www.kermitlynch.com/our-wines/domaine-arnaud-ente/">Domaine Arnaud Ente</a> for the minerality and freshness.</p><p>"Leaf days are better with a wine from the Southern Rhône like Marsanne or Roussanne or a Bordeaux Sémillon for better structure, texture and a smooth taste. Fruit days I match to Provence or a fruity Alsace Riesling from <a href="https://www.zusslin.com">Valentin Zusslin</a>. But of course, it also depends on the plate."</p><p>And up to 70% of the wine list is biodynamic, he added.</p><h2>During the pandemic, the restaurant's clientele has been more local.</h2><p>Restrictions on international <keyword id="6354692" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Travel">travel</keyword> have kept much of Mirazur's traditional clientele away.</p><p>"Normally the majority of our clients come from overseas; countries like the USA, Japan, and China," Huguenin said. "But this summer the clients have been predominantly French."</p><p>In a country that boasts 29 three-Michelin-starred restaurants (only Japan, with the same number, rivals it), this home audience, he added, can sometimes be the biggest critics. As international guests have been forced to cancel longstanding bookings, pockets of availability have opened up; however: particularly now the high season months of July and August have passed. <a href="https://www.mirazur.fr/reserver.php">Reservations are made via an online booking system</a> that is currently only taking bookings for 2020.
