Here are the most popular TikToks of the year, from fried chicken ASMR to an inventive onion-cutting hack

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A TikTok creator's 16-year-old black cat, Loki, was killed by a foster dog in February.</li><li>Millions are following along as Soren High documents the process of having Loki's body freeze-dried.</li></ul><a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@teapourn?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Soren High</a>, a 35-year-old <a href="https://www.instagram.com/hot.mango.undies/?hl=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fashion designer</a> and TikToker who resides in Portland, Oregon, has gone viral for the unorthodox way they are grieving their late cat, Loki. Over the past three months, High has documented the process of having the 16-year-old black cat freeze-dried. According to <a href="https://animalfamilypet.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Animal Family Pet Preservation</a>, which rendered the service, freeze-drying is an alternative to taxidermy, where cold temperatures are applied in a vacuum over a long time to remove moisture from body tissue."I knew I wanted to have [Loki] preserved the day I took her home," High, who uses they/them pronouns, told Insider. "It was an immediate knowledge that we were going to be together forever." High first began posting about the plans <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@teapourn/video/7207142609012133166?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in March</a> and subsequently sent the corpse off to Ohio. They have since documented every step of the process, from <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@teapourn/video/7212837170070015275?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">packing up Loki's coffin for shipping</a> — complete with flowers and ice packs — to chronicling how to care for the freeze-dried corpse, including <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@teapourn/video/7237295156364315946?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cleaning Loki's glass eyes and maintaining her fur</a>. Several videos in the series have garnered millions of views. The most viral, <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@teapourn/video/7236766614723497262?_r=1&amp;_t=8cl6dA1aL5q" target="_blank" rel="noopener">where High unboxes Loki's body</a>, has 4.8 million. "My cat arrived in the mail today if you're ready to meet her," High says at the top of that video, opening the package and then dissolving into tears holding Loki's newly-preserved corpse. <h2>High believes their cat would have wanted this memorial</h2>Loki passed away in February in a tragic accident that High calls "the most traumatizing experience" of their life.One night, when High was taking their foster dog, Peter, for a walk, the large Dane mix lunged for a rabbit, and High lost control of his leash. But instead of going after the rabbit, the dog deviated and attacked Loki, who was sitting outside. The cat died on the way to the vet's office, High told Insider.Shortly after Loki died, High said their inclinations to have Loki preserved were affirmed while taking psychedelics. High "had an experience with [Loki's] soul," they told Insider, whereupon the cat <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@teapourn/video/7238812959374626094?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">seemed to condone her preservation</a>. "She told me to just love her and this was what I felt like loving her was." High ultimately opted for freeze-drying over taxidermy because it causes less harm to the body. It also "lasts a lot longer" and felt like a "more humane practice," they said. <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@teapourn/video/7236815643532627243?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">On TikTok</a>, High explained that Loki hadn't been skinned, and that all of her bones were still intact.The procedure cost a total of $3,000, High told Insider, and the creator asked followers for donations in order to afford the costly venture. They ultimately raised $4,300 — with the remaining $1,300 going to two animal rescue organizations. <h2>High said they were initially shocked and then warmed by Loki's corpse</h2>After they received the body, High was stunned by the finished product, including how all of the details — including Loki's ear hair and bald eyebrows — had been perfectly depicted. She even smelled like herself, High said."I'll admit it, it completely broke me at first," High said of seeing her corpse for the first time. "And then you see how perfect and complete she is, and then suddenly you are whole again."In addition to Loki's freeze-dried body, High has sought to memorialize the cat in several other ways. Loki's heart was freeze-dried separately, and the rest of her organs were cremated to be stowed in a <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@teapourn/video/7236848681830403371?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">custom urn</a>. For now, the creator is keeping Loki's body <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@teapourn/video/7236809816679714094?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">on their bedside table</a>, but is ultimately planning on displaying the cat on a shelf in the living room.While most viewers have been supportive, others have criticized the unconventional way High is processing their grief. Most people wondered if seeing a dead pet's body could be re-traumatizing. "I could never do this. to see my boys face without him responding to me I'd be broken all over again," wrote a top comment. "This would make my grieving process impossible," another said.Some have called the decision "strange" and vile, and likened it to "<a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@teapourn/video/7238271711211293995?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">demonic torture</a>." But High said they chose to share the story to show viewers that freeze-drying was an option. He spends most of his days flying between New York City and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. He works on the smiles of Hollywood actors, reality-TV stars, fashion models, and even royals. He's most sought-after for his boutique porcelain veneers, which cost clients $4,000 a tooth and up to $80,000 for a full smile reconstruction. So how did Apa become the world's leading <keyword id="6355064" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Celebrity">celebrity</keyword> dentist, and what makes his signature veneers so pricey?Michael Apa: So, when I first started in cosmetic dentistry, one thing that was being taught was something called smile design, which was a golden proportion of the mouth and tooth form to create an ideal smile. And I think that's where the term "chicklets" and such came from, is because everybody kind of had this cookie-cutter, perfect smile. Narrator: According to Apa, what makes a perfect smile is actually, well, an imperfect one. Embracing the imperfections is key to Apa's signature method, called Facial Aesthetic Design. Here, he's using Facial Aesthetic Design to create a straighter, more confident smile for his client Andrea.Andrea Ahern: I find that my <keyword id="23660" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="teeth">teeth</keyword> are a little uneven, they kind of slant this way, and I don't like my gumline, and they're uneven underneath.Apa: Maybe four veneers on top, four veneers on bottom. And we would be able to straighten the teeth out, and we would also be able to use a laser where we would reshape some of the gum so that you wouldn't see as much to make it more proportional to the rest of your teeth and your smile.Narrator: The method uses a client's unique facial features to determine their most flattering smile. This personalized way of designing the smiles means no two are the same and is just the first reason why they're so pricey. After the number and shape of veneers are decided and the client undergoes any preliminary dental work, like fillings or gum reshaping, Apa takes a mold of the client's teeth. The mold will be used to create a set of temporary inserts for the client to test-drive their new look.Andrea: That is insane.Apa: Looks like big fake teeth, right? [Andrea laughs]Andrea: That's amazing.Narrator: Once a client is happy with the results, their smile moves into the hands of Apa's in-house team of master ceramicists. Having an in-house team at this skill level gives Apa full control over how each smile is made and is probably the biggest contributor to the teeth's price tag.Apa: When you talk about this process, it's almost like we're creating individual jewelry for the teeth, and that is the level at which it's crafted.Narrator: The ceramicists shape the teeth out of a special blend of porcelain, applying it carefully layer by layer with attention to pigment.Apa: The interesting part about white teeth: There's really no such thing as white. It's all a matter of value and opacity.Narrator: While bright-white veneers may have four to five shades, Apa's teeth use 17 to 20 different shades and opacities. The deepest pigments are layered toward the base of the gum, becoming gradually lighter and more translucent toward the tip. The overall effect so closely mimics natural teeth that, when inserted, there'd be no reason for the average person to believe the teeth are anything other than real. The custom teeth are typically ready in under a week, but those from out of town can get a new smile in as little as 24 hours. The convenience is a major plus for his high-profile clients with jet-setting schedules. The bespoke level at which Apa's veneers are designed isn't the only reason they're so expensive. It also comes down to the method in which they're actually inserted. At any other dentist's office, Apa says a client can expect to set aside an entire day for an insert. But here, it's in and out in under two hours. Part of what makes Apa's process so quick is what he calls a minimally invasive approach.Apa: So, when we talk about being minimally invasive in someone's mouth, it means cutting away as little tooth as possible and saving as much healthy tooth as possible. That in turn is what makes the veneers last longer. So, the less invasive you are in the mouth, the stronger the bond of the porcelain to the natural tooth.Narrator: This minimally invasive method is supposed to cause less pain and discomfort, too.Apa: I'm gonna lip-assist you, because you're really numb. Smile. And now you can pull it up.Andrea: Oh, my God.Apa: Right?Andrea: Oh, my God!Narrator: With proper care, clients can expect their designer smiles to last anywhere from 15 to 20 years.Andrea: I feel extremely confident with my teeth now. How's the business, how are you?" Like, you know, your first thing is to be like,Rachel Bridgwood: "Fine!"Lauren Anderson: But then we're like, no.Rachel: We're bad.Lauren: Bad. Things are bad.Narrator: Lauren and Rachel run the flower design company Sweet Root Village in Alexandria, Virginia. At the beginning of 2020, they were expecting their most successful year yet.Lauren: It was our 10-year anniversary in business. We were at our highest booking level we had ever been for events. And literally within a week, it was gone.Narrator: Then COVID-19 and stay-at-home orders canceled weddings across the country and crippled the wedding industry. Lauren and Rachel lost 80% of their business and had to furlough their staff, including themselves.Lauren: We're like, congratulations to us. We made it 10 years...unemployment.Rachel: We're unemployed from our own business.Lauren: File for unemployment. This is our warehouse/studio workspace that we produce all of the flowers for weddings and events out of.Narrator: In a typical year, they work upwards of 100 events.Lauren: Some weekends we're employing, like, up to 100 people. We pull in big teams of people to work two, three, four, five events on any given Saturday.Narrator: But when COVID-19 was named a pandemic, their weekly event count dropped to zero.Lauren: Literally within the span of two days, mid-March, I think, all of our events canceled. We just had a cooler full of flowers. We could not stop the shipments. I think once we started seeing our fall events dropping off the calendar, we had to have a really intense week or two of self-reflection and looking at the numbers. And we realized, like, OK, even if this is gonna be really hard and this could take us years to dig out of this, we couldn't see ourselves doing anything else. This is worth fighting for. And knowing that we are supporting several families and livelihoods and salaries, we just had to put one foot in front of the other.Rachel: What are some new ways we can come up with interesting revenue that still maybe feels like us?Narrator: Remember that load of flowers they were stuck with? The pair decided to run a drive-through flower sale.Lauren: We just set it up as a drive-through, and we blasted it all over social media and had an amazing turnout. People drove up, and they popped their trunks. We came with gloves and everything and put the flowers in their trunk. We had a goal, I think, to - we were like, "Well, let's see. If we sell this many arrangements, maybe we make, like, $1,500 and donate that." I think, over two days, how much did we raise?Rachel: Around $13,000.Lauren: $13,000!Rachel: Which was amazing.Narrator: But Lauren and Rachel still had months of canceled events and a business to keep afloat. So next, they relaunched their online à la carte shop.Lauren: Over here, I'm finishing up a centerpiece from our Simply Sweet Root collection. An order placed online to go out as a delivery. And these are all premade designs. That's what's fun about our à la carte shop, is we're able to experiment, think outside of the box of our typical designs.Narrator: But not everything they tried worked.Rachel: The peony sale that we did over the summer. We had some sales. That was great. But not very much. We were like, "Maybe 50 people will buy a peony bundle!"Lauren: We had, like, 10.Narrator: Most recently, they hosted a pop-up farmers market in Alexandria, compete with a flower installation.Lauren: These are just all the flowers from our local farm. Here is our Food for Others installation. Hoping that people will take pictures, share about hunger action month, and fight to end world hunger. Today, we actually chose just to do a plant sale. And so we have lots of plants, various candles, pots people can pair with.Narrator: Local artists, ceramicists, bakers, and fellow florists also sold their products from socially distant booths. Lauren: We invited pretty much just everyone we know.Customer: It's a thing to go to right now, when we're not able to go to a lot of places. I got some dried flowers.Rachel: Something we probably would love to do ordinarily, but have never really had the time for it. Suddenly we have the time for it. We wanted to make it happen.Narrator: The team has also started hosting floral-arrangement classes and making bouquets for micro weddings.Lauren: Over here, we're working on some centerpieces for a wedding. More classic white and green, but hints of blue and blush. So that's really pretty.Rachel: I use a mirror so I can kind of see what it looks like to someone viewing.Narrator: Despite all these efforts, Sweet Root Village is still facing huge losses.Lauren: We are still at an 80% revenue deficit and don't expect...Rachel: To recoup much of that.Narrator: Luckily for Lauren and Rachel, 96% of couples are planning on postponing, not canceling their weddings.Lauren: We're hopeful that our spring season can move forward as planned. But we're just kind of taking it one day at a time. We've scaled our business to be the size we are now. Stay small to weather the storm. That's my advice.Rachel: Considering ways that you can foolproof yourself. Diversifying is great. Do it.Lauren: I think it's also OK to allow yourself to know if this is a good time to change course.Rachel: I think that if you want it and want it to continue, you just gotta fight harder.Lauren: It's promoting resilience. I think our team's gonna be stronger coming out of this. I think we're gonna be like, hey, we can get through 2020, we can get through anything.
