A central bank digital currency (CBDC) can play a key role in providing access to digital payments without the requirement of a bank account and the access would be facilitated by a central bank-issued digital wallet, said industry stakeholders. The rollout of the e-rupee has been one of the most sought-after developments, since its announcement in the FY23 Union budget. Jaya <keyword id="3655832" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="vaidhyanathan" source="Orion">Vaidhyanathan</keyword>, CEO of BCT Digital, said that the <keyword id="30067" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="rbi" source="Orion">RBI</keyword>'s commencement of the pilot of the digital rupee marks appreciable progress in the journey toward digital payments. "The initiative has started in the low volume, high-value wholesale (interbank) segment from where learnings would be used to roll out reliable, built-to-scale retail payments," said Vaidhyanathan. The pilot announcement involves nine banks, including the SBI, the Bank of Baroda, the HDFC Bank, the Yes Bank, the Kotak Mahindra Bank, and the ICICI Bank, settling secondary market transactions in government securities, thereby reducing settlement risk and transaction costs. "A successful pilot and by extension, a full rollout of the digital rupee is expected to boost the reach of payment and financial needs of a wider category of users while ensuring transparency and low operational cost, and in this regard, it is encouraging to witness the RBI's support for innovation in creating a world-class, future-ready digital ecosystem," Vaidhyanathan stressed. India has one of the most technologically-evolved currencies in the world, and the e-rupee will put it in the forefront of true digital payments and improve financial inclusion. "The popularity of a digital rupee backed by the RBI will help bring legitimacy to other private digital currency like crypto. While we wait for clarity on how it is implemented, it is a positive step towards the acceptance of digital currency," said <keyword id="219963" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="prashant-kumar" source="Orion">Prashant Kumar</keyword>, Founder and CEO at weTrade. According to Arjun Khazanchi, Co-Founder and Chief Legal and Strategy Officer at Rooba.Finance, the CBDC is an ambitious project where the government has been silently working to disrupt the financial system which has traditionally been opaque, cash dependent, and highly-inefficient. "The first use case is going to be for the secondary market transactions in government securities. This move may even boost liquidity, remove inefficient and redundant processes while reducing transaction costs. This would also enable increased transparency between the participants," Khazanchi contended. Through this, the government expects to also be able to reduce settlement risk which is one of the biggest use cases for Blockchain in financial markets. There are some fears regarding the privacy and overt control that the government may possess over the CBDCs. "However, some commentary may be over exaggerated with intent being presumed. Retail CBDC is still far away and would require a lot of education and technical training before being imposed," said Khazanchi. The CBDCs could help preserve the role of public fiat in monetary policy, securing central banks' role in protecting financial stability in their markets. It provides a public, digital alternative to cash and private digital money. According to <keyword id="181738" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="manish-sharma" source="Orion">Manish Sharma</keyword>, Founding Partner of Centricity Wealth Tech, the CBDCs can play a key role in providing access to digital payments without the requirement of a bank account. "Public-private partnerships will be essential to the success of a CBDC launch, enabling central banks to leverage established infrastructure and client relationships. Such alliances will help central banks implement use cases aligned with end-user needs, complementing their gaps in capabilities and knowledge of consumption habits, particularly in a retail scenario," <keyword id="445" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sharma" source="Orion">Sharma</keyword> said. By engaging commercial banks and other private stakeholders (technology enablers, merchants, users) in the launch process, central banks will also foster a broader sense of ownership, manage fears of displacement, and increase the probability of successful adoption. Mahesh Shukla, CEO and Founder, PayMe India, said the RBI is further looking forward to focus on other wholesale transactions and cross-border payment, which can be projected as steps to ease the ways of financing for the general public. Indian e-rupee to boost digital payments sans bank accounts, say industry stakeholders

With very few employees and small costs we are able to acquire,” said Kumar. EXCLUSIVE: YES Bank's workforce shrank by 1,000 employees since March but now it's hiring again for the coming year

New Delhi, Mar 16 () Yes Bank on Monday said it has approved reconstitution of its board with Prashant Kumar as the new MD &amp; CEO. Kumar, former chief financial officer and deputy managing director of State Bank of India, is currently overseeing the troubled private sector lender as RBI-appointed administrator. The other board members will be Sunil Mehta, former non-executive chairman of Punjab National Bank, as the non executive chairman of Yes Bank, Mahesh Krishnamurthy and Atul Bheda as non-executive directors. SBI will have the right to nominate two directors on the board of directors of Yes Bank. "The reconstitution of the board of directors of the Bank as set out, shall take effect immediately after the expiry of seven calendar days from the date of cessation of the moratorium in accordance with paragraph 11 of the Scheme," Yes Bank said in a regulatory filing undersigned by the bank's administrator Kumar. The administrator has been appointed by the Reserve Bank of India under Section 36ACA(2) of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 with effect from March 6, 2020. The affairs, business and property of Yes Bank are currently managed by Kumar. Yes Bank said it has also amended the memorandum and articles of association of YES Bank Limited to reflect the application provisions of the Reconstruction Scheme. The moratorium on Yes Bank, placing a withdrawal limit of Rs 50,000 on deposits, is to be lifted by 6 PM on March 18, 2020 which is much before the original date of April 3. The bank on March 5 was put under moratorium by RBI due to serious financial mismanagement under its former MD &amp; CEO Rana Kapoor, who currently is in the custody of probe agencies, as well as failure to raise enough capital to keep afloat. The board of the bank was superseded with immediate effect, and other financial activities such as granting new loans, investment, among others, were also curbed. As per the bank's rescue plan outlined by RBI, SBI will have a stake of 49 per cent in Yes Bank through capital infusion of Rs 7,250 crore. Private lenders ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, IDFC First Bank, Bandhan Bank, Federal Bank and mortgage lender HDFC Ltd have also infused capital in cash-strapped Yes Bank. KPM RVK

Yes Bank okays board reconstitution; Prashant Kumar to be new MD & CEO

New Delhi, Mar 19 () As banking services resuming fully at Yes Bank, administrator Prashant Kumar on Thursday once again assured depositors about the safety of their money and said there is ample liquidity with the bank. Kumar is the MD and CEO designate of the reconstructed Yes Bank. The banking services resumed at 6 pm on March 18, 2020, and customers were able to get full services by visiting the branches from March 19, 2020. "The bank has ample liquidity and there is no need to depend on external sources," Kumar said in a statement. Bank branches will open one hour earlier at 8.30 am from March 19 to 21, 2020, so as to serve the customers better. The bank has also extended banking hours across branches for its senior citizen customers, from March 19 to March 27, 2020 - 4.30 pm to 5.30 pm. "Yes Bank has taken adequate measures to restore banking services and ensured that the branches and ATMs have adequate supply of cash. The bank will use the proceeds of the FPO largely as a buffer. The bank's FPO with an aim to raise up to Rs 15,000 crore will open on July 15 and close on July 17. the RBI suggests that the tenure of promoter CEOs should be limited to 10 years. Non-promoter CEOs should also only be allowed to stay on for no more than 15 years. Once the tenure is over, the RBI has given leeway for around two years allowing banks to appoint a successor — once the rules are finalised. “To build a robust culture of sound governance practice, professional management of banks and to adopt the principle of separating ownership from management, it is desirable to limit the tenure of the WTDs or CEOs,” RBI said in the discussion paper. If CEOs want to return to the helm, they will have to wait it out for three years before they can be reappointed. What does this mean for Uday Kotak? Uday Kotak, who has been Kotak Mahindra Bank’s executive vice-chairman and managing director since its inception in 2003-04, was re-designated as managing director and CEO in May 2018. That culminates in a total of 17 years that Uday Kotak leading the bank. If RBI’s new guidelines come into effect, Kotak may get another two years to name his successor. The brokerage firm Jefferies believes the most likely candidate for the position is Dipak Gupta, the current joint managing director. Uday Kotak has been in the midst of another stalemate with RBI to bring his stake in the bank down to 26%. Earlier in June, he sold off 56 million shares through a block deal, bringing his promoter stake down to 26.1% ⁠— after <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/uday-kotak-to-sell-2-83-stake-in-kotak-mahindra-bank-sale-to-fetch-over-rs-6800-cr/articleshow/76141837.cms">multiple extensions</a> to the initial December 2018 deadline set by the RBI.  Understandably, not too many Indian start-ups operate in the NBS space and the <keyword id="49685" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Genetic">genetic</keyword> screening of newborns is rarely done in the country at a macro level. But here is one Mumbai-based start-up that has doing it for over a year now. <keyword id="2024246" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Navigene">Navigene</keyword> has developed a unique and <keyword id="2024273" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Non-invasive-preventive-genetic-screening">non-invasive preventive genetic screening</keyword> service for newborns and adults, which can be implemented at a mass scale. Its primary focus is <keyword id="2024274" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Non-invasive-preventive-testing">non-invasive preventive testing</keyword> including <keyword id="2024278" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Newborn-genetic-screening">newborn genetic screening</keyword>, <keyword id="2024275" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Metabolic-fingerprinting">metabolic fingerprinting</keyword>, <keyword id="2024279" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Prenatal-screening">prenatal screening</keyword> and more, besides offering <keyword id="2024280" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Diagnostic-testing">diagnostic testing</keyword> (<keyword id="2024281" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Cytogenetics">cytogenetics</keyword> &amp; <keyword id="1284857" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Molecular-Genetics">molecular genetics</keyword>). <keyword id="2024283" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Navigene-Baby-Screen">Navigene Baby Screen</keyword>, the start-up’s flagship product, screens the newborns for 110 genetic and metabolic disorders on the very 3rd day after birth and the company claims it is one of the most comprehensive screening tests in the world. Here is a snapshot that captures the start-up’s operations, vision and viability. 
 
Who runs Navigene (navigene.in): Two co-founders – Dr <keyword id="2024250" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rishi-Dixit">Rishi Dixit</keyword> (MD &amp; CEO) and Dr <keyword id="1888201" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vrushali-Joshi">Vrushali Joshi</keyword> (CTO) – and the early-stage incubation and <keyword id="6357097" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="venture-capital">venture capital</keyword> firm, <keyword id="720080" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IncuCapital">IncuCapital</keyword>. An MBBS and MBA, Dr Rishi has a deep understanding of the healthcare marketing space and also worked with start-ups. Before starting Navigene, he was head of sales &amp; strategy at a start-up in the similar domain. Prior to that, he was manager, health analytics, with ICICI Prudential Life insurance. Dr Vrushali holds a Ph.D. from Mumbai University and is a leading geneticist with more that 15 years of experience. She is also a government-certified genetic counsellor. 
 Navigene was set up by the two co-founders in April 2012, along with IncuCapital’s senior venture partners’ team of <keyword id="2024248" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Surojit-Nandy">Surojit Nandy</keyword>, <keyword id="6393254" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Manish-Kumar">Manish Kumar</keyword> and <keyword id="2024247" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Prashant-Maharaj">Prashant Maharaj</keyword>. The company started operations in November that year. Currently, it boasts a state-of-the-art testing facility and central lab in Mumbai where all samples are flown in from different parts of the country and also from global destinations. This facility also serves as the head office while 2-3 sales people are assigned to each location. Weekly sales meetings are generally held at local CCDs – a good example of asset-light sales offices. 
 But going forward, the start-up plans to open sales offices in Delhi, Bangalore and Hyderabad – small facilities for operational and logistics management. As sample collection is generally done by the people themselves or the <keyword id="6355907" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Medical-facilities">medical facilities</keyword>, the Navigene staff simply picks them up from homes/hospitals and courier them to the HO in Mumbai. 
 
What inspired the venture: The knowledge that non-traditional, highly accurate and revolutionary ways of medical diagnosis is possible through genetic screening and diagnostic techniques. Navigene was founded to bring these advanced <keyword id="684042" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="100" keywordseo="medical-technologies">medical technologies</keyword> to India. 
 
What’s the pitch: Early and accurate prediction/diagnosis of disorders and ailments in newborns and adults, through <keyword id="2024271" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Preventive-genetic-screening">preventive genetic screening</keyword> – so that every individual has the opportunity to manage his/her health. “Over the years, we have learnt a great deal about how genes function and how they can cause certain problems. Now is the time to use that knowledge in exciting new ways to prevent and treat <keyword id="6377700" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="health-problems">health problems</keyword>,” says Dr Rishi. 
 
How it works: Navigene currently caters to the B2B segment – <keyword id="796241" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="corporate-hospitals">corporate hospitals</keyword>, high-end nursing homes with birthing facilities, NICUs (<keyword id="1145483" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="neonatal-intensive-care-units">neonatal intensive care units</keyword>) and state-of-the-art <keyword id="2024290" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Paediatric-facilities">paediatric facilities</keyword>. It also works with individual obstetricians/gynaecologists and paediatricians. The start-up typically approaches medical facilities who, in turn, offer/recommend these services to their clients. Once a client registers for the tests, he/she is given the sample collection kit and the rest of the testing procedure follows. 
 
As for newborn screening, parents get the kit as soon as they register and after the birth of the baby, either the hospital staff or the parents collect the urine sample of the baby on the 3rd day. It is then sent Navigene’s central lab in Mumbai where the sample is analysed and reports are sent within 4 days. If the report detects any abnormality, the concerned doctor/hospital/parents are immediately informed and further consultation could be arranged with medical experts. Genetic counselling for the parents is also offered in such cases. 
 
Show me the money: As of now, the start-up has a B2B revenue model in place while the B2C space is essentially serviced through its partners who can reach out to more people. Navigene charges fee per sample testing and its flagship solution, Navigene Baby Screen (NBS), which tests urine sample for 110 disorders, costs Rs 5,000. But to make it more affordable for Tier II cities and smaller medical facilities, customised packages start from Rs 900 for tracking 3-4 basic disorders and can go up to Rs 2,700 for screening 31 commonest disorders that affect infants in the first few months. The company has also tied up with a leading stem cell company for instant access to a large B2C market. “Plus, we want to work with the state governments when they start running the NBS programme at the state-run hospitals, but we will keep the packages small,” says Dr Rishi. 
 
The market size is also huge as around 30 million babies are born in India every year. “As of now, we are targeting 40 cities in India where our addressable market (a fraction of the urban population in these cities) is around 30 lakh babies a year. We aim to cover most of them over the next 3 years through our proprietary sales channel,” adds Dr Rishi. 
 
Claim to fame: A value driver in a critical industry while expansion is its forte. Navigene is a pioneer of sorts, bringing crucial preventive health screening for newborn babies at an affordable price. The start-up is currently doing 500 samples a month and targeting 10,000 samples in the next 3 years. 
 Navigene raised an undisclosed seed round with the help of its institutional co-promoter IncuCapital in August 2012 and it will be raising Series A <keyword id="6357455" type="EVENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Funding">funding</keyword> in the next 2-3 months. The money will be utilised to grow its presence pan-India and also in other geographies such as South-east Asia and <keyword id="48890" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Latin-America">Latin America</keyword>. “We can’t disclose the names just now, but these would be all bigger and more developed countries. We are also talking to a few players in Latin America, which can lead to substantial global expansion,” says Surojit Nandy of IncuCapital. As for pan-India expansion, the company plans to reach 40 cities in next the 3 years through its own B2B sales force. 
 The start-up has hit <keyword id="2024302" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Operational-breakeven">operational breakeven</keyword> in December 2013, within 11 months from starting its sales operations. But it is not really looking at that as a landmark. “We don’t intend to remain operationally cash-positive as we are growing at a breakneck speed and want to keep investing in the growth. That’s the reason we are looking at the Series A funding soon,” says Dr Rishi. 
 “We are also working on some breakthrough <keyword id="2024304" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Screening-products">screening products</keyword> around <keyword id="350054" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="100" keywordseo="metabolomics">metabolomics</keyword> in areas like oral &amp; <keyword id="16070" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="breast-cancer">breast cancer</keyword>, and adult metabolic disorders. So a big chunk of the Series A money will be used for product development. We will <keyword id="47916" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="invest">invest</keyword> a good amount in Capex and Opex to further strengthen our testing portfolio,” he adds. 
 
Biggest challenge: According to Dr Rishi, there’s no real competition here as very few companies in India focus on genetics (metabolomics). As for the newborn screening business, a few labs who do screening through blood sample testing could be competitors, but they use an entirely different technology platform and can track a maximum of 45 disorders. However, creating awareness among prospective clients is currently the biggest challenge. <keyword id="1912844" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="patient-education">Patient education</keyword> is virtually non-existent in India while the cost of reaching them at a micro level could be huge. “That’s why we are opting for online registrations, which will reduce operational costs,” he notes. “Then there are other screening products we are working on. When they hit the market, we should be way ahead of others,” concludes Dr Rishi.

"The enemies have generally hidden <keyword id="6477260" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="IEDs">IEDs</keyword> and roadside bombs along main roads, highways and heavily populated areas to target security forces and innocent civilians," the ministry said in a statement. "The <keyword id="9984913" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ANA-soldiers">ANA soldiers</keyword>, especially the ANA engineering team members found, defused and destroyed 4,776 IEDs, roadside bombs and landmines, putting their lives in danger to save people's lives and properties." Taliban militants and other insurgent groups in the country have been using home-made Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) to make roadside bombs and landmines targeting security forces, but the lethal weapons also inflict casualties on civilians, Xinhua news agency reported. A teenage girl was killed and 25 civilians were wounded in two IED explosions in two provinces over the weekend.
