<ul class="summary-list"><li>Matthew Boutte, 39, gave up a career in law to travel the world while tutoring.</li><li>During the pandemic, he decided to try new things, including data science and harvesting cilantro.</li></ul>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Matthew Boutte, a graduate of Georgetown Law, who gave up his legal career to travel and tutor. It has been edited for length and clarity. Business Insider has verified his education history and income.In 2013, I graduated from Georgetown Law and became a lawyer. In 2016, I decided I didn't want to practice law anymore and could tutor to pay the bills until I figured out what I wanted to do next.Tutoring took off very quickly. In my hometown of San Luis Obispo, California, I taught math, physics, and statistics for the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-study-sat-act-top-sat-tutor-2017-2">SATs</a> and other admissions exams at rates of $135 to $155 an hour.<h2 id="40cfdbc3-d515-44a0-9c64-58f3b98ca0b5">Working the tutoring into my travels</h2>In June 2017, a friend asked if I wanted to go on a trip to Japan.At that point, I'd been doing all the tutoring in person, and I realized I could do all the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://businessinsider.com/the-rich-spend-1000s-private-tuition-some-say-its-mistake-2024-5">tutoring online</a> and travel longer.We went to Japan for three weeks. Then, I continued to Southeast Asia, tutoring the whole way. During that time, my student base expanded throughout the US, including some international students.I got into a rhythm of spending three months abroad and three months back home in California. I traveled to Western Europe and jumped around North Africa, South America, and Central America until the pandemic hit. By that point, I had earned a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/7-side-hustles-that-will-earn-6-figures-or-more-2019-12">six-figure</a> salary from tutoring.I work the tutoring job into wherever I am. I settle down in the same place for a week and open up the hours I want to be available for tutoring. I spend the rest of the day exploring.One of my favorite pictures from my travels is of a tiny village in Guatemala that doesn't appear on Google Maps. There was great cell service, so I made some openings in the calendar and connected to my cellphone's Wi-Fi hotspot. There's a picture of me sitting in a chair in the jungle, tutoring. It always makes me smile.<div type="image" title="Matt Boutte Tutoring" height="3024" width="3024" msid="112617201" hostid="261" sizebytes="1154810"></div><h2 id="f32ceff9-da14-4c62-8e2c-3b7af69ea2e1">The pandemic gave me a chance to try new things</h2>My tutoring slowed down significantly at the beginning of the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/private-tutoring-companies-demand-services-increase-online-learning-2020-7">pandemic</a>, so I had a lot of free time. I decided to teach myself data science.My family friend's farm near my hometown was short-staffed, so I agreed to help harvest cilantro for about two and a half weeks. It was very hard work and less financially rewarding, but I've always been fascinated with agricultural fieldwork.<div type="image" title="Matt Boutte Cilantro" height="3456" width="5184" msid="112617300" hostid="261" sizebytes="1176534"></div><h2 id="bbc62331-97f6-4c76-bcee-325160583da6">Weaving work, life, and travel together</h2>One dimension of wealth I struggled with was choosing freedom over time. When a student pays me for the hour, it's money for my time.Practicing law was the same thing. At the law firm I worked at, I <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/big-law-associates-what-its-like-to-bill-2400-hours-2021-12">billed</a> in six-minute increments, which messed with my perception of time. I didn't like thinking of time as having monetary value.With my travels and tutoring, I could have buckled down at home and been more efficient, but I wanted to weave work, life, and travel together.In 2021, I started a new career as a data scientist, working at the intersection of law and data science. But after I moved to Chicago, I started getting more inquiries about tutoring. Now, most of my students are in high school, and I help them with taking standardized <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/harvard-sat-act-standardized-testing-back-ivy-league-2024-4">tests</a> to get into university.I've recently started learning web development; maybe I'll also find ways to monetize that.I have no regrets about going to law school, but I realized pretty quickly the practice of law was not for me.Looking back, I wish I had tried more things. I've heard the analogy of a sail on a ship: You can't guarantee the wind will come, but the more sails you put up, the better off you'll be when the wind does come. So putting yourself out there, taking more risks, and learning new skills are all ways of putting up more sails.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A Montana rancher was charged with illegally selling offspring from a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dolly-sheep-clones-where-are-they-now-2016-7">cloned sheep</a> across state lines.</li><li>The retail value of the transported animals is $250,000 to $550,000, per court documents.</li></ul>An 80-year-old Montana rancher, Arthur "Jack" Schubarth, had a lucrative business going until authorities got wind of it.For the last five years, or so, Schubarth has been <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/australian-farmers-giving-sheep-away-culling-prices-plummet-exports-2023-11">selling sheep</a> for tens of thousands of dollars.There's nothing illegal about selling sheep for exorbitant prices — unless those animals are Marco Polo argali sheep, or in Schubarth's case, hybrids of Marco Polo argali sheep.Marco Polo argali sheep are native to central Asia and are considered threatened under the US Endangered Species Act. Montana law prohibits importing, possessing, and selling them.On Tuesday, Schubarth pleaded guilty to charges in a scheme that involved all three.His sentencing is scheduled for July and he faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 for each of the two felony counts against him.<h2>The US has wildlife protection laws</h2>It all started in 2013 when an unnamed party illegally imported Marco Polo argali sheep parts to the US from Kyrgyzstan, according to court documents.Shortly thereafter, Schubarth allegedly got his hands on some of those sheep parts and, in 2015, paid a deposit of $4,200 to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ethics-of-human-cloning-scientific-progress-2020-7">produce cloned</a> sheep embryos from the dead argali's remains.In May 2017, a pure argali sheep was born from one of those <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-clones-3-cows-make-more-milk-claim-supercow-2023-2">cloned embryos</a>. Schubarth named him Montana Mountain King.Mountain King would be Schubarth's golden goose in a lucrative business scheme to create larger, more attractive sheep for (mostly) Texan hunting farms, according to court documents.In 2018, Schubarth harvested Mountain King's sperm, which he used to artificially inseminate <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sheep-walking-down-cliff-optical-illusion-viral-2019-9">bighorn ewes</a> (female sheep) on his farm to create hybrid offspring.Over the next several years, Schubarth, with several unnamed parties, illegally transported dozens of ewes and their <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pizzly-bears-polar-grizzly-hybrid-spread-due-to-climate-crisis-2021-4">hybrid offspring</a> across state lines.In the process, they are accused of forging vet inspection certificates and lying that the sheep were a legally permitted species, according to court documents.<h2>Sheep worth tens of thousands of dollars</h2>Marco Polo, a subspecies of argali sheep, is "an almost mythical animal" prized by trophy hunters for its large spiral horns, naturalist George Schaller told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.npr.org/transcripts/5300762">NPR in 2006</a>.Schubarth's hybrids were a mix of the Marco Polo and other bighorn sheep. Their large size and giant horns would fetch higher prices on the game farms than other species. In 2020, Schubarth sold 24 hybrids for $46,200, according to the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/montana-man-pleads-guilty-federal-wildlife-trafficking-charges-part-yearslong-effort-create">Department of Justice's statement</a>.Cloning the dead sheep isn't where Schubarth broke the law since there's no regulation on animal cloning in the US, Joyce Tischler, a professor at Lewis &amp; Clark Law School's Center for Animal Law Studies, told Business Insider.It was all of that illegal transporting across state lines (and the lying and forging of official documents).On March 12, Schubarth pleaded guilty to conspiracy and trafficking in violation of the Lacey Act, according to the DOJ's statement. The act <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/canadian-woman-sold-polar-bear-skulls-to-undercover-agent-doj-2021-5">bans the trade</a> of wildlife that was obtained illegally.The retail value of the transported wildlife was between $250,000 and $550,000, according to court documents."What I see as the danger is that if this becomes popular, then other people are going to want to illegally import argali sheep to make money off of them," Joyce Tischler, a professor at Lewis &amp; Clark Law School's Center for Animal Law Studies, told Business Insider.<h2>How to clone a sheep</h2>Though none of the Department of Justice's charges relate to the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/colorado-scientists-cloned-endangered-ferret-using-33-year-old-dna-2021-2">cloning</a> of illegally imported sheep parts, the process remains controversial in some countries.In 2015, the European Union <a target="_blank" href="https://www.science.org/content/article/eu-parliament-votes-ban-cloning-farm-animals">banned</a> the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-clones-3-cows-make-more-milk-claim-supercow-2023-2">cloning of farm animals</a>, citing animal welfare concerns. One of the biggest concerns was that cloning mammals <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ed.ac.uk/roslin/about/dolly/facts/cloning">has</a> a low success rate. It's unclear what Schubarth's success rate was, though court documents only mention a single cloned animal — Montana Mountain King.<div type="image" title="Dolly the sheep" height="2048" width="3072" msid="108505239" hostid="261"></div>Some improvements have been made since <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-happened-dolly-cloned-sheep-2016-7">Dolly the sheep,</a> the world's first mammal clone, was born in 1996. However, it's still an involved process that requires veterinary expertise and a surgical procedure for sheep.The most difficult part is inserting the cloned embryos into a live ewe to carry it to term, Alison Van Eenennaam, a biotechnologist with the University of California, Davis who wasn't involved in the case, told Business Insider.An expert will make an incision, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/human-cells-sheep-embryos-organ-transplants-xenotransplantation-2018-2">implant the embryo</a> in the uterus, and sew the ewe up again. "It's a real scene," Van Eenennaam said. "It's not that trivial to do."The sheep would have to be at the right stage of its reproductive cycle to maintain the pregnancy, Van Eenennaam said.Once Schubarth had the male clone, Mountain King, it was an easier process from there to build a family of hybrids. He could simply use King's semen to artificially inseminate ewes, no surgical implanting necessary.<h2>Cloning isn't the real concern here</h2>The plea agreement requires Schubarth to quarantine any clones and offspring. The US Fish and Wildlife Service may also decide to neuter the animals, according to court documents.Gregory Kaebnick, a senior research scholar with The Hastings Center who studies bioethics, isn't worried that the cloned sheep may impact wild species or alter ecosystems since they seemed to have been bread for hunting. But he said that it could be a concern in the future."Some of this technology is coming down to what's sometimes called the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/crispr-outlook-for-2022-top-gene-editing-experts-2021-11">DIY bio</a> level or the garage bio level," he said. "People are sort of trying to hack genomes in their basements."<div type="image" title="Two hands with blue gloves hold instruments in a lab for cloning" height="1500" width="2250" msid="108505240" hostid="261"></div>It's not completely unreasonable to start thinking about how this could one day impact wild genomes, Kaebnick said.Van Eenennaam agreed that the genetic component of this case isn't particularly worrying. Livestock cloning still has a relatively low success rate.However, she noted that bringing in tissue from any non-native species could be a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/experts-fear-lax-rules-bsl-4-labs-could-lead-pandemic-2021-6">biosecurity risk</a> if they're carrying disease."It's kind of your worst nightmare," she said, "that material is being moved around without the proper clearances just because of the potential threat to the agricultural industry."Schubarth's lawyers didn't respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

The Governor tried to pacify the opposition MLAs thrice and urged them to allow him to fulfil his constitutional responsibility of delivering the policy address. However, the MLAs of the United Democratic Front led by the Congress walked out of the House, except lone BJP MLA O Rajagopal who remain seated throughout the Governor's speech. Leader of Opposition <keyword id="72604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ramesh-Chennithala">Ramesh Chennithala</keyword> told the media outside the Assembly: "We are performing the opposition's duty. It is our responsibility towards the public. Speaker Sreeramakrishnan has put a blot on the House by interfering with a central agency's work. We cannot just sit and watch." In his address that went on for two hours and 10 minutes, Khan read out the <keyword id="170730" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="LDF-Government">LDF government</keyword>'s policy against the three <keyword id="10490441" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-central-farm-laws">new central farm laws</keyword>, maintaining that the "farm laws are for the corporates and a consumer state like Kerala will have to bear their brunt". There were reports that the Governor may not read out the policy address to criticise the farm laws but that did not happen. The Governor said that the state had worked over time during coronavirus pandemic and that the government had delivered free kits to each and every household during this period. He also said that the Pinarayi Vijayan-led Left Democratic Front government will provide title deeds to 20,000 landless persons in the southern state. A scathing attack on central agencies was made in the state's policy statement, with the Governor maintaining that the actions of these agencies had resulted in a "demoralising effect on honest and hardworking officers". He also claimed that it had led to impediments in the implementation of the flagship projects of the Vijayan government. New Delhi, Feb 1 () The government has asked states to adopt three central model laws on agricultural land leasing, marketing and contract farming, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Saturday.
 Presenting the Budget for 2020-21, Sitharaman said farmers will be be allowed to set up solar units on barren/fallow lands and supply power to grids.
 The finance minister further said 20 lakh farmers will be provided funds for setting up standalone solar pumps.
 The government has also proposed a comprehensive measure for 100 water stressed districts, she added. 
 Besides, the Centre also proposes plans to help farmers use proper manure and
little water and encourage balanced use of fertilisers, the minister said.
 Balanced use of fertiliser will bring about change in prevailing regime of providing incentive for use of chemical fertiliser, Sitharaman said.
 The finance minister also said that Food Corporation of India and Warehousing Corporation of India to build warehousing facility on their land.
