The price of cement is hardening across the country and since August this year, the rates have gone up by ₹16/per bag, said <keyword id="152070" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Emkay-Global-Financial-Services-Ltd" source="Orion">Emkay Global Financial Services Ltd</keyword>. According to a report by the company, in November the prices went up by about ₹6-7/bag. While the prices remained flat in Western and Central parts of the country, the rates hardened in Northern, Eastern and Southern regions, Emkay Global said. According to the report, the cement companies are attempting further price hikes of ₹10-15/bag across the country this month. "Absorption of the price hikes will get revealed over the next few days. With the financial-year change (from December to March) by ACC and Ambuja, volume push by these companies is likely to be limited in December. This is positive for the pricing trend in the near term," Emkay Global said. "We expect the industry's profitability to increase by move r than ₹200/ton QoQ (even higher for Eastern region players) in Q3FY23, with improving cement prices along with peakout of operating cost in Q2FY23," it added. Cement makers plan to hike price by ₹10-15 per bag

Emkay Global in a recent sectoral report said the average pan-India cement price increase was about Rs.3-4/bag in October 2022. On a month-on-month (MoM) basis, prices rose by 2-3 per cent in the East and South, and about one per cent in the West; while declining 1-2 per cent in the northern and central regions, the report said. "Cement companies are attempting price hikes of Rs10-30/bag across regions in November 22. Absorption of these price hikes will be uncovered over the next few days," said Emkay Global. Industry volumes likely to have declined by a high single-digit YoY and a low double-digit MoM, in October 22, owing to a high base, as the festive season was spread across October-November last year. According to the report, a delayed exit of monsoons and labour shortage owing to festive holidays impacted demand in October 22. The demand is expected to improve in upcoming weeks, with all major festivals ending and given the onset of a busy construction season. The cost pressure is expected to ease in coming quarters for the industry players and the industry margins are expected to bottom out in Q2, with peaking of costs, higher exit of cement prices and pick-up in construction activities in coming quarters, said Emkay Global. The international petcoke prices are down by about 30 per cent from the peak of $195/tonne. Further the dip in the fuel prices are expected to provide cost savings of at least Rs 150-200/tonne from Q3FY23, Emkay Global said. Cement companies plan price hike of ₹10-30 per bag

Mumbai, Mar 20 () Even though the ongoing temporary shutdown in the wake of Covid-19 has impacted construction activities across the country resulting in a decline in cement uptake, the hit on domestic demand is transient, says Kotak Institutional Equities. According to the domestic brokerage firm, novel coronavirus or Covid-19 led restrictions would dent cement demand from March 2020 onwards. However, it is expected to recover once normalcy returns. "Historically, Indian cement demand has seen a weak correlation with global demand but a strong correlation with the domestic economy. Even as the restrictions have caused a dent, limited impact of Covid-19 in rural areas would partially cushion the near-term impact on domestic demand," it said in a report. The agency expects a 3-7 per cent year-on-year increase in demand in FY2021/22E as against 5-6 per cent earlier. "We see the Indian cement sector better-placed than most in the current situation with drivers linked mainly to the domestic economy. Hit on domestic demand, if any, due to Covid-19, should be transient. Also, cost benefits from subdued commodity prices should offset any pricing-led pressure on margins," it said. Cement sector is a direct play on the Indian economy with housing and infrastructure forming 85 per cent of the total demand. "Further, the housing demand is dominated by rural housing, which is underpinned by government subsidy and agricultural income. Being a bulky commodity, the sector has negligible trade (both import and export) and largely a local play with a cement bag having an average lead distance of 300 km," it said. The agency further said that cement forms 5-7 per cent of total cost of construction and demand is largely inelastic to prices. "Prices, with a strong regional factor, are driven by discipline among regional players, market concentration and partially by regional demand-supply dynamics. Our channel checks with dealers suggest that all-India cement prices moderated by one per cent to Rs 349 per bag in March 2020 after a 6 per cent increase in January-February 2020," it said. Coronavirus: Hit on domestic cement demand likely to be transient

New Delhi, Jan 29 () Cement and cement products manufacturer Birla Corporation on Wednesday reported nearly three-fold jump in consolidated net profit at Rs 81.49 crore in the third quarter ended December 2019.
 The company had posted a consolidated net profit of Rs 27.36 crore in the same period last fiscal, Birla Corporation said in a regulatory filing.
 Revenue from operations during the quarter under review stood at Rs 1,715.05 crore as compared to Rs 1,556.93 crore in the year-ago period, a growth of 10.16 per cent.
 Birla Corporation said it was able increase profitability on the back of revenue growth and better realisation.
 During the period, the company said its total sales volume grew 7 per cent year-on-year to 3.43 million tons, while realisation per ton grew 3.49 per cent to Rs 4,712.
 Capacity utilisation for the December quarter was at 87 per cent, up 5 percentage points over the comparable period of previous year, it said.
 During the quarter, cement prices in key markets in northern and central India weakened from September quarter. In eastern India, cement prices dropped sharply in the three months till December, it added.
 However, the company was able to garner increased market share in West Bengal and Bihar by expanding distribution reach and leveraging cross-branding from multiple plants of its own and its subsidiary, Birla Corporation added.
 Led by premium brands such as MP Birla Cement Unique and MP Birla Cement Perfect Plus, the company's sales volume in eastern India during the quarter grew by 27 per cent over the previous year, it added. 
 Demand in the trade segment, which caters to rural housing and individual homebuilders, was affected in some of Birla Corporation's key markets such as Madhya Pradesh owing to an extended monsoon, it said.
 On the other hand, the company said sale of premium cement by volume witnessed a 17 per cent year-on-year growth in December quarter on the back of continued focus on the category and investments into brand-building.
 On the outlook, Birla Corporation said increase in launch of new residential projects and revived demand in certain key states suggest demand is picking up pace.
 Furthermore, the announcement of the National Infrastructure Pipeline and renewed focus on roads, housing and irrigation projects should augur well for cement demand in the coming months.
 "Though FY20 is likely to end with low single-digit volume growth, a healthy revival is expected for the industry in FY21," the company said. RKL RVK

After underperforming the Nifty for five consecutive years, Reliance Industries has barely matched the index’s performance in 2013 so far, but 2014 is likely to be better. 
 
Reliance has embarked on a high capital expenditure programme, investing Rs 1,50,000 crore in three years in expanding petrochemical and polymer capacities, improving efficiencies at its refineries and increasing its dwindling gas output. 
 
 
 
Thus, FY13-FY16 is likely to be a phase of high earnings growth for the company, supporting stock outperformance. There are some risks, though. The company is fighting against penalties proposed by the petroleum ministry, while the outlook for the refining industry is clouded, with margins likely to come under pressure in 2014. Nevertheless, the company’s strong balance sheet should ensure a robust performance for its shares once the risks subside. 
 
Sesa Sterlite 
 
The government has endorsed the sale of residual stakes in its two group companies – Hindustan Zinc and Balco – through auction. This will allow Sesa Sterlite, which already holds more than 63% of HZL, to buy 25-100% of the government stake. Following this, HZL would be either merged with Sesa Sterlite or delisted. This would give Sesa Sterlite access to more than Rs 20,000 in cash with HZL and put the company in a position to bring down its debt. 
 
Also, the overall volumes of the companies across businesses – iron, copper, zinc, and oil and gas – are likely to pick up in 2014. The aluminium business could face some pressure due to falling prices. Growth in volumes and strengthening of the balance sheet will lead to re-rating of the stock, which is currently trading at a significant discount to its global peers BHP and Rio Tinto. FY15 EV/EBIDTA for Sesa Sterlite is 4.9, while it’s 6.2 and 6.6 for BHP and Rio, respectively. 
 
<keyword id="6653" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="ICICI-bank">ICICI Bank</keyword> 
 
Focus on the retail segment, a large branch network and steady loan growth may lead to consistent profit growth in the next few quarters. The bank has posted a 20% y-o-y growth in net profit in the last 12 quarters. Current and <keyword id="25450" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="savings">savings</keyword> accounts (CASA) as a percentage of total deposits improved to 43.3% in the September quarter as against 39% in the June quarter. This is among the highest among the private sector banks. 
 
Gross NPAs as of the September quarter stood at 3.08%, which is reasonable considering the macro environment. At current market prices, the stock is trading at a price-to-book value of 1.8. This is lower than peers such as HDFC Bank and Kotak Bank, which are trading at 4.5 and 3.5. Over the last few years, the stock was trading at a discount to its peers due to higher exposure to stressed assets. However, sustained profit growth in next few quarters may lead to a lower valuation gap. 
 
Ultratech Cement 
 
UltraTech Cement, being the largest company in the sector with a pan-India presence, stands to gain from the expected improvement in construction in 2014. With the acquisition of JP Associates’ Gujarat plant this year, the company’s cement capacity stands at 63 million tonnes, almost 16.8% of total domestic capacity. 
 
UltraTech Cement has been selectively expanding its capacity, which has strong long-term benefits. Cement prices are currently under pressure. In the September quarter, all-India cement prices traded at Rs 299 per 50-kg bag, up 2% from the year earlier. Once demand improves next year with the clearing of infrastructure projects, UltraTech would be one of the few large cement companies to gain. In the coming year, analysts expect cement demand to grow at 7-8%. This should improve earnings at UltraTech, which also has a light balance sheet with a debt-to-equity ratio of less than 1.

If there is one company that has succeeded relatively well in defying the slump in the engineering and capital goods sectors over the past few quarters, it is Larsen &amp; Toubro. The company’s increasing focus on internationalisation has helped it partly offset the slump in the domestic economy. The company had an order book of Rs 1.76 lakh crore at the end of the September quarter or close to three years of revenue. 
 
The ratio of international to domestic orders moved up from 10:90 in 
FY13 to 15:85 at the end of September. This puts pressure on operating profit margin, which at 10.2% for the trailing 12 months was 87 bps below the comparable period. An increase in domestic investment activity could ease out some stress on the margins going forward. In the event of a pick up in the investment economy in second half of 2014, it is likely to be one of the biggest beneficiaries and that will invariably boost its share price. 
 
PowerGrid 
 
PowerGrid has underperformed the broader index due to the overhang of the dilution through the recent follow-on public offer. However, PowerGrid may now not need any further equity for at least next three to four years. Under the 12th Five-Year Plan, the company has a capex target of Rs 1.1 lakh crore. 
 
In the past, the company has consistently met its execution target, which led to a compounded annual growth rate of 24% in net profit in the last five years. Given the track record on execution and the healthy capex target, profit growth may continue to remain healthy in the future. Going ahead, with concerns over equity dilution subsiding, the stock may be driven by fundamentals. 
 
Cipla 
 
Cipla, one of India’s biggest drug makers, has been through a transition phase in 2013. This has included the induction of new senior managers, changes in <keyword id="383688" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="business-strategy">business strategy</keyword> and the restructuring of various business segments. The company is now setting up front ends in the developed markets of the US and Europe with an intention to launch its own products there. It is also investing in R&amp;D to build a pipeline of products for launch. 
 
This increased initial investment has squeezed margins in recent quarters in the expectation of more sustainable growth in the future. As product approvals pick up and products are launched, the company is likely to see the fruits of this strategy in 2014. It’s likely to emerge as an outperformer in its sector by the second half of 2014.

New Delhi, Jan 29 () The Ramco Cements Ltd on Wednesday reported a 3.03 per cent fall in consolidated net profit at Rs 94.60 crore for the third quarter ended December.
 The company had posted a net profit of Rs 97.56 crore in October-December quarter a year ago, The Ramco Cements said in a BSE filing.
 Total income during the quarter under review rose 5.99 per cent to Rs 1,290 crore from Rs 1,217.07 crore in the year-ago period.
 The company's total expenses rose 8.45 per cent to Rs 1,179.11 crore as against Rs 1,087.14 a year ago. 
 "During the current quarter, the company witnessed sluggish demand in its core markets coupled with pressure on prices due to active monsoon. Demand in eastern markets was more visible during the current quarter, but the prices, particularly in West Bengal, were very poor and the trend in January 2020 is positive with improvement in price," the company said in a statement.
 During the quarter, the company's sales volume increased 3.53 per cent to 28.44 lakh tonnes from 27.47 lakh tonnes in the year-ago period.

The Ramco Cements Q3 net profit down 3 pc to Rs 94.60 cr

New Delhi, Nov 14 () Aditya Birla Group's flagship firm Grasim Industries on Thursday posted a consolidated net profit of Rs 1,472.77 crore for the July-September period helped by good performance of its subsidiaries UltraTech Cement and Aditya Birla Capital.
 Grasim Industries had reported a net loss of Rs 1,319.79 crore in the September quarter a year ago, Grasim Industries said in a BSE filing.
Its revenue from operation was at Rs 18,430.27 crore, up 3 per cent, during the quarter under review as against Rs 17,892.42 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal.
"Consolidated EBITDA at Rs 3,180 crore recorded a growth of 7 per cent Y-o-Y and PAT (before exceptional items and one-time deferred tax benefit) was up by 6 per cent Y-o-Y to Rs 639 crore driven by superior performance of the company's subsidiaries, UltraTech Cement Limited and Aditya Birla Capital Limited.
Grasim Industries' total expenses were at Rs 17,069.81 crore during the period as against Rs 16,541.52 crore, up 3.19 per cent.
Its revenue from Viscose segment was at Rs 2,431.42 crore, down 6.67 per cent, to Rs 2,605.36 crore of Q2/FY 2018-19.
"The weakness in the domestic VSF realisations impacted this quarter's profitability. The benefit of falling input costs like pulp prices will get reflected in the coming quarters due to inventory time lag," said Grasim Industries.
While, its cement business UltraTech' revenue was at Rs 9,620.47 crore, up 4.01 per cent, as against Rs 9,249.26 crore.
"UltraTech completed the acquisition of Century Textiles and Industries cement business... With this acquisition, UltraTech's cement manufacturing capacity stands augmented to 117.4 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), including its overseas capacity. This makes UltraTech the 3rd largest cement company in the world, outside of China," the company said.
Revenue from Chemicals during the quarter was at Rs 1,347.30 crore, down 16.44 per cent, as against Rs 1,612.38 crore.
"Softening of Caustic Soda prices globally has led to decline in the domestic prices, resulting in lower profitability on YoY basis," said Grasim.
While its Financial Services segment revenue reported a 12.72 per cent increase at Rs 3,960.86 crore during the period from Rs 3,513.59 crore a year ago.
Revenue from others segment was at Rs 1,305.60 crore, up 13.32 per cent, as against Rs 1,152.10 crore.
On the outlook, Grasim said its VSF business will continue to focus on expanding the market in India and its chemical business is under an expansion mode for both chlor-alkali and specialty chemicals. 
On UltraTech, it said: "The company with its presence across the country is the best positioned to take advantage of the revival in cement demand, despite the anomalies that may get created in demand patterns in some parts of the country due to extraneous reasons."
"Grasim is incurring capex to increase capacities across its key business lines and is potentially well positioned to leverage the next phase of the economic growth," the company said.
 Shares of Grasim Industries Ltd on Thursday settled at Rs 734.30 apiece on the BSE, down 0.64 per cent from the previous close. KRH MKJ

Mumbai, Apr 4 () Domestic cement demand is likely to affect adversely due to the lockdown to control coronavirus infection and would recover only in the second half (H2) of 2020-21 post the monsoon season, according to a report.While production, as well as offtake, is likely to be practically nil during the lockdown period, even post removal of lockdown, there may be the impact on demand revival because of factors like reduced income levels resulting in demand compression and the possibility of slower demand from affected off-takers such as construction and real estate development sectors, rating agency Icra said in a report. However, Icra said that most operational expenses of cement players are variable in nature- thus, most major cement companies, especially those which have modest gearing and repayment and healthy liquidity are likely to be able to tide over the short-term. "The cement demand showed some improvement in November 2019 – January 2020, however, the adverse impact of COVID-19 has ticked in March 2020 and is likely to continue in Q1 FY2021."With the lockdown in place, the demand offtake has effectively ceased. Most of the companies have shut down manufacturing operations and the rest are likely to be shut down shortly," Icra Ratings Assistant Vice President Anupama Reddy said.Beyond the immediate near term, the impact could be there on offtake due to domestic demand compression arising out of loss of income of prospective consumers, she said, adding that the demand is likely to recover in H2 FY2021 post the monsoon season.In the first 10 months of FY20, the cement production reported a modest 1.1 per cent increase to 278.8 million tonne over the year-ago period.The demand growth was impacted owing to a slowdown in project execution due to - the general elections and labour unavailability (in Q1 FY2020), monsoons (in Q2 FY2020) and weak execution of government housing and infrastructure projects because of extended monsoons (in Q3 FY2020), the report further added. In Q3 FY2020, south India faced muted demand momentum particularly in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, while demand was moderate in other southern states.In the north and central India also, the demand was modest owing to construction ban in certain areas, harsh winters among others.However, western India saw a moderate uptick in demand trends, driven by infrastructure development and rural spending.In the east, the demand picked up substantially towards the end of the quarter, driven by government spending on infrastructure and affordable housing segments.At the pan-India level, cement prices are higher in the northern, southern and western markets by 20-25 per cent, 5 per cent and by 8 per cent, respectively in 11 months FY2020 on year-on-year basis.However, the prices are lower in the eastern markets by 2-3 per cent during the same period.The slowdown in the demand is likely to exert pressure on the cement prices in the near term."With discontinuance of operations, the only expenses left would be manpower and debt servicing expenses and a minimal amount of factory overheads.
