These dog owners are the type of people who don't do their own hair — they have someone come to their home to do a blowout. Many of them don't know the basics of grooming their <keyword id="6358374" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="pets">pets</keyword> because up until the pandemic, I was grooming their dogs every week.</p><p>During the New York City lockdown, I couldn't make house calls, so I did virtual FaceTime coaching to help the owners and keep them calm. After about six weeks of lockdown, I began doing house calls again because I had zero human contact, so I felt safe.</p><p>Before COVID-19, I was always out the door of my Chelsea apartment early in the morning to catch the train or crosstown bus with my 32-pound backpack of tools. I always give myself extra time because my clients are busy people and have a schedule to maintain. If I start late, it affects everyone and everything all day.</p><h2><strong>Since the pandemic began, my clients' dogs have grown filthier than ever.</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="Jorge Bendersky" height="360" width="481" msid="76895235" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>I used to groom six dogs, five days a week. Now with the pandemic, it's more like eight to 10 per week. </p><p>It takes around two hours to groom a small dog, and I usually only work with dogs up 20 pounds. As a rule, I only groom dogs that can stand on a countertop, even though many of my clients have built their own doggie spa in the homes with all the professional equipment of a top grooming salon. They've even bought hundreds of dollars worth of their own grooming tools to keep on hand.</p><p>Since the pandemic started, dogs are filthier than ever. Many of them are spending more time outside than usual and they are being groomed a lot less. </p><h2><strong>On house calls, you're always performing. </strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="Jorge Bendersky dog" height="360" width="480" msid="76895241" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Sometimes for me, it's like that movie "Groundhog Day," but it's the 'Let's groom the puppy' show over and over, all day.</p><p>My summer season started early because a lot of my clients left the city for the Hamptons — mostly East Hampton, Bridgehampton, and a few in Watermill. </p><p>We have safety protocols in place now for house calls when I go there. When I pull up in the driveway, my clients will often drop the dogs in the guest house, so I can just go in and get to work without us coming into close contact. </p><p>Face coverings during grooming has always been common practice, because it protects your lungs from flying hair and products when you use clippers or dryers. Long-term exposure to small particles can cause permanent lung problems. Now I use a face mask during the entire grooming process, though.</p><p>The hardest social distancing rule I must practice is not getting tempted to kiss the dogs on the nose, but some extra belly rubs usually do the trick. </p><h2><strong>Communication is key.</strong></h2><p>Normally, when I make a house call, I allow 10 minutes to talk to my clients, even when it comes to the biggest celebrities, about hot topics — you know, diets, politics, everything. A small detail lost during communication can lead to a pet owner's nervous breakdown — yes, some of them are really that dramatic!</p><p>Because of this, I insist all owners, celebrities or not, take time to communicate with me directly. After we get a routine, I'm okay flying solo, but most of my clients look forward to our weekly hot topics chat. After those 10 minutes of chit-chat, they have to leave so I can work.</p><h2><strong>Before I take on a client, I meet with them and their dog.</strong></h2><p>I'm very selective; I must like the dog and the owner. All my business is through word of mouth, and everyone must go through a couple of interviews. I'm definitely a diva. I have refused dogs and I have refused owners in the past: Some dogs are too territorial, and since I'm working in their space, that's no good for me.</p><p>Sometimes the owners are helicopter parents, and that doesn't work either. Sometimes I'm not a good match for them. </p><h2>Grooming is not a wash and go; it's a luxury.</h2><p><div type="image" title="Jorge Bendersky" height="480" width="480" msid="76895243" hostid="261"></div></p><p>I give the dog a good bath, followed by a massage. Then I wrap them in a towel to rest for 15 minutes, which allows the nutrients to absorb into the skin and hair follicles to close. I take pictures and check my email while they nap, and then I style them.</p><h2><strong>Middle-aged, single women prefer their dogs to look young and thin.</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="Jorge Bendersky" height="360" width="480" msid="76895246" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>They don't want them to look old because they think it's a reflection of themselves, so I do henna treatments on dog's faces to get rid of the gray and sculpture their hair so they don't look like they were sitting on the sofa watching TV and eating bonbons with mommy all day.</p><p>Most of the time I am able to do what my client requests, but if you have a pug and show me a picture of a poodle, well, I can't do that. It'd be like a woman taking a photo of Jennifer Aniston to the hairdresser and saying, make me look like that.</p><h2><strong>My rates start at $300 an hour.</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="Jorge Bendersky" height="480" width="480" msid="76895249" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Most dogs take two hours, so it's typically $600 per dog per visit.</p><p>I studied stand-up comedy and am certified as a counselor for the A.V.P. Gay and Lesbian Anti-Violence hotline so I can groom your dog, make you laugh, and listen to you — that's why I'm so expensive. </p><p>My own dog, Tito, a Pomeranian passed away in May. He lived a fabulous life and left behind 9,000 Instagram followers before I deleted his account. We worked together for 13 years and we always wore color-coordinated wardrobes for all our TV appearances. </p><h2><strong>The dogs I groom are like my nephews.</strong></h2><p>I see them every week and we spend time together and have fun — but at the end of the day, I get to give them back to their parents and go home.</p>

<p class="p1">Last year, photographer Paul Nathan visited the preeminent <a href="http://www.intergroom.com/">Intergroom competition in East Rutherford, N.J.</a> and captured some of the madness and, yes, beauty.</p>
<p class="p1">While most people say elaborate pet haircuts are all in good fun, some critics have called <a href="http://technorati.com/entertainment/tv/article/extreme-poodle-forces-haircut-humiliation/#ixzz0qwUJmMOx">the practice of "extreme grooming" humiliating and psychologically damaging for the dogs</a>. </p>

These Pictures Of Dogs At A Grooming Competition Are Insane

<ul class="summary-list"><li>One in two owners say pets are just as important as human members of their family, a survey found.</li><li>Animal lovers are paying more for healthcare, grooming, and splurging on treats.</li></ul><p>One in two pet owners think their furry friends are as much a part of their family as a human, according to a new survey.</p><p><a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2023/07/07/about-half-us-of-pet-owners-say-their-pets-are-as-much-a-part-of-their-family-as-a-human-member/?utm_source=Pew+Research+Center&amp;utm_campaign=77cbc3ae26-Weekly_7-8-23&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_-77cbc3ae26-%5BLIST_EMAIL_ID%5D#dog-versus-cat-ownership" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Pew Research Center</a> found that almost two thirds of Americans have a pet, with 51% of respondents saying their four-legged friends are just as important as a child or partner.</p><p>The online research surveyed the views of just under 3,000 pet owners in April. It found women were more likely to consider their pets equal to a human family member (57%) than men (43%).</p><p>The US is the world's largest pet market and expected to be worth $200 billion by 2030, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/company/press/global-pet-industry-to-grow-to-500-billion-by-2030-bloomberg-intelligence-finds/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to Bloomberg</a>. From pet insurance, to doggy daycare, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/celebrity-dog-groomer-charges-300-an-hour-luxury-pet-haircuts-2020-7">and celebrity groomers</a>, Americans are willing to spend big when it comes to their beloved fur babies.</p><p>On average, a decent <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/best-pet-insurance?_gl=1*4z1e8n*_ga*NDk0OTkwMDg3LjE2NTQ3MDM2MDA.*_ga_E21CV80ZCZ*MTY4OTE3ODE0OC42MzkuMS4xNjg5MTc4MTUzLjU1LjAuMA..">pet insurance plan</a> costs between $30 and $50 a month, while owners of large-breed dogs that require grooming services can expect to pay at least $100 for a full bath and haircut.</p><p>Food expenses can vary based on the quality, the size of the animal, and whether you opt for fresh ingredients or kibble.</p><p>According to the Bloomberg report, the growth in the pet industry is mostly driven by the rising cost of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/how-often-should-my-dog-go-to-the-vet">vet care</a> including visits, pharmaceuticals, and diagnostics that are making it possible for pets to live longer.</p><p>Despite the high cost of pet ownership, some dog owners still feel able to splash out. San Francisco's Dogue is a cafe and pastry shop just for dogs where a customer <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dog-restaurant-shop-dogue-san-francisco-review-tasting-menu-2022-11">spent $75 so her pup could enjoy a tasting menu,</a> for example.</p><div type="image" title="A dish at Dogue." height="3024" width="4032" msid="101707283" hostid="261" sizebytes="261144"></div><p>The experience included table service and dishes for her dog that would normally cost at least $27. The experience ended with steak tartare made with filet mignon and quail egg.</p><p>"I'd save this splurge for a special event, but I'd go back to Dogue, maybe next time with a group," Kristen Hawley wrote.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>An interactive map shows what happened each time the Proud Boys joined anti-LGBTQ+ protests in 2022.</li><li>Most of the extremist group's activity targeted drag performances, the map shows.</li></ul><p>Once a week on average in 2022, the Proud Boys joined or led anti-LGBTQ+ protests across the US, according to new data from the Armed Conflict Location &amp; Event Data Project, or ACLED.</p><p>Insider worked with ACLED to create this map, which shows what happened at each of these protests. It's part of Insider's look at the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/proud-boys-2022-break-records-anti-lgbtq-protests-extremism-watchdog-2023-1">Proud Boys' increasing war on LGBTQ+ community</a>, and drag in particular. </p><p>Sixty percent of the Proud Boys' anti-LGBTQ+ demonstrating last year happened outside drag events, mostly seen by organizers and attendees as celebrations of diversity for families and children.</p><p>"On one side of the street, I saw signs calling me a groomer," drag king Oliver H remembered recently of the Proud Boys' final drag story hour protest, on December 29, when they held signs reading "Groom dogs, not kids" at a public library in the New York City borough of Queens.</p><p>"On the other side of the street, they were singing 'High School Musical,'" he said, describing the more than 200 counter-protesters. "Each side of the street was so different."</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/proud-boys-crashed-story-hour-a-drag-king-account-2023-2">Oliver H recounts that day </a>as part of this project. </p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Proud Boys protested Drag Story Hours on 18 occasions across the US last year, new data shows.</li><li>'Oliver H,' a NYC drag king, read to 50 kids during 2022's 'terrifying' but joyful final protest.</li></ul><p>"Oliver H," a New York City drag king with a self-described, rainbow-colored "mohawk to the sky," has read to kids at dozens of <a href="https://www.dragstoryhour.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Drag Story Hour</a> events, many of which spurred protests.</p><p>But he knew he'd better add extra flowers when he painted on his beard for his December 29 reading at a public library in Queens.</p><p>Outside the library, some three-dozen Proud Boys, neo-Nazis, and religious activists were shouting "groomer!" And more than 200 rainbow-clad counter-protesters were banging drums and singing Lady Gaga's "Born This Way." </p><p>"I was like, you know what? The extremist group is showing up at roughly half of all anti-LGBTQ+ demonstrations, according to the Anti-Defamation League.  </p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/proud-boys-target-lgbtq-community-drag-show-weekly-us-map-2023-2">See Insider's interactive US map of what happened each of the 53 times the Proud Boys joined or led anti-LGBTQ+ protests last year. </a></p><p>The passionate protest at the Queens Public Library in Jackson Heights was the last of 18 drag story hours the Proud Boys targeted in 2022, and one of the year's most tense, with police deploying mace to keep the opposing sides apart. Authorities made one arrest, <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/newyork/news/drag-story-hour-queens-library-protest-arrest/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to news accounts</a>.</p><p>"We had Zoom meetings beforehand about safety measures," Oliver H told Insider of <a href="https://www.dshnyc.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">his local chapter</a> of Drag Story Hour, <a href="https://www.dragstoryhour.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a national program</a> that for seven years has promoted these voluntary celebrations of diversity and literacy at public libraries and schools.</p><p>"But nothing could have prepared me for the grand scale of how much was happening."</p><p>Days earlier, the hometown congresswoman, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, had rallied her supporters on Instagram: Go to the reading in force, the Queens Democrat urged, and "Defend Drag Story Hour in NYC!" </p><p>Her high-profile post tipped off protesters. But it also super-charged a network of story hour "defenders." </p><p>These included <a href="https://www.participate.nyc.gov/processes/peoplesbus?locale=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The People's Bus</a>, <a href="https://www.jfrej.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jews for Racial &amp; Economic Justice</a>, and the<a href="https://parasolpatrol.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> "Parasol Patrol"</a> — counter-demonstrators who deploy big rainbow umbrellas and ridiculously loud singing to shield children and parents from homophobic shouting and signage.</p><p>As Oliver H was getting ready, there were enemy infiltrations on both sides.</p><p>"We had found a flyer that was circulating on the far right, saying that they were going to meet at a Dunkin Donuts ahead of time, nearby. Which was very bone chilling to say the least," the performer said.</p><p>"And we had people who were trying to look, I guess, a little less visibly queer that were at that Dunkin Donuts to see what was going on."  </p><p>The opposing camp had spies attending the reading — children in tow.</p><p>"They were there with their children, and the father was very drunk," Oliver H said.</p><p>"They were very 'anti' us. Others hold signs reading, "If you won't fight for your kids we will!" and, "Why must they/them sexualize children?" </p><p>"Send the groomers home!" shouted a Proud Boy holding a sign reading, "Groom dogs, not kids."</p><p>The counter-protesters beat drums and sang along to amplified Gaga and Disney songs — the latter intentionally chosen so images posted online would quickly be taken down "for copyright issues."</p><p>"On one side of the street, I saw signs calling me a groomer," Oliver H remembered recently.</p><p>"On the other side of the street, they were singing 'High School Musical.' Each side of the street was so different."</p><p>Inside the library, 50 young children, and their adult loved ones — including the apparent infiltrator family — could hear all of the singing, and none of the homophobic slurs.</p><p>"The singing drowned out the shouting," remembered Oliver H, who performs at adults-only venues under a far more risque name, "Oliver Herface."</p><p>"The kids just thought there was a fun parade."</p><p>He read the children's books, "We Don't eat Our Classmates," and "Don't Touch My Hair."</p><p>He also read "'Twas the Night Before Pride," about the Stonewall uprising, the 1969 protest at a Greenwich Village gay bar that catalyzed America's gay rights movement.</p><p>"It felt very meta, reading that story while everything was going on outside," Oliver H said.</p><p>"It kind of made me feel like I was in a storybook myself."</p><p>The infiltrator family, the father of which was suspected of being "visibly drunk," was not impressed.</p><p>"The only thing they had to say afterwards was that it was boring," Oliver H said.</p><p>"I'm like, yeah, well if they expect me to uphold their backward rhetoric of what happens at a drag story hour, then yeah, me just reading a story to children is going to seem boring." </p><p>For Oliver H, though, it wasn't dull at all.</p><p>"The energy in the room was wonderful," he said. </p>
