India's renewable energy sector could potentially employ around one million people by 2030, which would be ten times more than the existing workforce of an estimated 1.1 lakh employed by the sector, according to an independent study released on Thursday by the <keyword id="3502332" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="council-on-energy" source="Orion">Council on Energy</keyword>, <keyword id="3502333" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="environment-and-water" source="Orion">Environment and Water</keyword> (CEEW), <keyword id="172147" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Natural-Resources-Defense-Council" source="Orion">Natural Resources Defense Council</keyword> (NRDC) and Skill Council for Green Jobs (SCGJ). The study "India's Expanding Clean Energy Workforce" highlighted that most of the new jobs would be generated by small-scale renewable energy projects such as rooftop solar and mini and micro-grid systems compared to utility or large-scale projects like solar parks. The CEEW-NRDC-SCGJ analysis also highlighted the adverse impact of the pandemic on employment in the renewable energy sector. In comparison to 12,400 new workers employed in the sector in FY19, only 5,200 new workers were employed in FY20 and 6400 were employed in FY21, it said. In FY21, a majority of the new workers were employed in the rooftop solar segment where annual capacity additions grew by nine per cent over FY20 and accounted for 1.4 GW capacity, it added. The study further noted that India has successfully trained 78,000 people under the Suryamitra training program, between 2015 and 2017, to improve the availability of skilled workers for clean energy projects. "The upcoming Union Budget must especially focus on scaling up rooftop solar, mini and micro grid systems, and domestic solar manufacturing to maximise the employment opportunities in the sector," Dr Arunabha Ghosh, CEO, CEEW said. As e-mobility aims to take big steps in India, <keyword id="6354973" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="electric-vehicles" source="Orion">electric vehicles</keyword> solutions firm <keyword id="4410318" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="sun-mobility" source="Orion">SUN Mobility</keyword> on Wednesday announced it has raised $50 million by <keyword id="122714" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="vitol" source="Orion">Vitol</keyword>, one of the world's largest independent traders of energy and a significant investor in <keyword id="12350523" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="zero-emission-technology-" source="Orion">zero-emission technology.</keyword> With this new funding, SUN Mobility plans to expand its footprint to major cities both by increasing the number of swap points, partnering with various OEMs (<keyword id="451306" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="original-equipment-manufacturers" source="Orion">original equipment manufacturers</keyword>), collaborating with various fleet operators and distributors to introduce newer business models, and adding more vehicles to its ever-expanding mobility-as-a-service (MaaS) offering. "Vitol will bolster our vision of onboarding 1 million EVs on SUN Mobility's platform by 2025 and help take make-in-India EV technology solutions to other emerging countries," Uday Khemka, Co-Founder and Vice Chairman, said in a statement. The company aims to set up 500 swap points in India by the end of 2022 and plans to roll out new products to enhance the swap experience and to further strengthen and expand its leadership in battery swapping across the country. "With over 160 million two and three-wheeler vehicles in India, SUN Mobility's model has significant potential. Electrifying the largest portion of India's vehicle fleet through a flexible and cost-effective offering has the potential to reduce urban pollution," added R Andrew de Pass, Head of Renewables, Vitol. SUN Mobility currently has a network of 50 battery-swapping stations spread across 14 cities, with plans to ramp it up to 150 stations in 20 cities by March 2021. It has already partnered with Indian Oil Company to deploy battery swap modules at their gas stations. According to an independent study by the CEEW Centre for Energy Finance (CEEW-CEF), the EV market in India will be a $206 billion opportunity by 2030 if India maintains steady progress to meet its ambitious 2030 target. This would require a cumulative investment of over $180 billion in vehicle production and charging infrastructure. SUN Mobility raises $50 million from energy giant Vitol

New Delhi, Dec 23 () Reliance Jio on Monday announced '2020 Happy New Year offer' as part of which it will offer smartphone customers one year of "unlimited services" for Rs 2,020.
 Reliance Jio's limited period offer will be available from December 24 to first week of January, sources said, adding that the offer is for smartphone as well as JioPhone users.
 In case of smartphone customers, the offer packs in 1.5 GB data per day, and unlimited voice calls within the Jio network. For calls to other networks, a Fair Usage Policy (FUP) of 12,000 minutes will be applicable. Subscription to Jio apps will be complimentary.
 Sources said Jiophone users will get a new JioPhone alongwith 12 months of unlimited services for Rs 2,020. Jio will offer 0.5 GB data per day for such users.

Jio unveils '2020 Happy New year offer'

New Delhi, Jun 18 () Opening of the coal sector to private players will generate jobs, reduce dependence on fuel import, stimulate the economy and catalyse the country's path towards a USD 5-trillion economy, the industry said on Thursday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the virtual auction process for 41 coal blocks for commercial mining, which is expected to garner Rs 33,000 crore of capital investment in the country over next 5-7 years. Industry body Ficci said that commercial mining will modernise the coal sector. "This landmark reform will unlock country's natural resources," Ficci President Sangita Reddy said. CII stated that the de-nationalisation of the coal sector will help in bringing new investment and advancement in technology. "It is a watershed moment in the history of the coal sector for India. The step reflects the GOI's firm commitment in moving towards AtmaNirbhar Bharat. It is also important to look at important aspects as quality of coal and coal prices at the outset so that the sector is streamlined in terms of policy and regulations to support India's vision," CII Director General Chandrajit Banerjee said in a statement. The auction of coal mines for commercial mining and relaxation of FDI in the coal sector will create a lot of interest for companies engaged in the coal mining and associated activities such as mine developer and operator (MDO) sectors, Arvind Sharma, Partner, Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas &amp; Co said. The timing of launch of the commercial mining is critical since the reserves must be utilised to build the country before the focus shifts to entirely to renewable energy, he said. Stating that launch of auction process for commercial coal mining was a transformative reform in the energy sector, Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas Partner Ramanuj Kumar pointed out that environmental concerns and delays are likely to result in muted interest from international investors. "We expect strong interest from domestic mining and power companies since bid terms are attractive as compared to other mineral auctions," Kumar said. Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran was of the view that with reforms like this, the mining sector can easily contribute 5 per cent to India's GDP. Commercial mining will be a very successful initiative and it will generate huge amount of growth, significantly reduce imports and create lots of jobs, he said. Vedanta Chairman Anil Agarwal also said that commercial mining will create infrastructure and people in the backward region will get employment. "The bold decision taken by the Prime Minister to open up coal sector will result in massive job creation and generate a lot of revenue as we can replace coal import worth Rs 80,000 crore every year," he said in a tweet. "This will also support the industry to bring down the cost. In these difficult times, it will be very useful for the growth of the country," he tweeted. The Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) said while India's coal demand is likely to increase in the next decade, the investment in green-field projects to expand production capacity must be examined more carefully. "Import dependence is not a bad thing, especially if it defers or removes investment needs into new mines in pristine environments in the country, CEEW Research Fellow Karthik Ganesan said. The government's attempt to promote coal-gasification is also puzzling, he said, adding that from a climate standpoint, it defeats India's efforts to rein in CO2 emissions. "Power generation and industrial applications that use syngas are 40 per cent - 80 per cent higher in CO2 emissions, as compared to those that use natural gas. Syngas is not cheap either. Data from the IEA suggests we might as well unlock deep-water gas instead of pursuing syngas, given the delivered price could be 4 – 6 USD/mmbtu higher than conventional gas. "Also, while the use of syngas reduces air pollution outcomes, as compared to burning coal, it comes with a significant risk of polluting underground water resources with phenols and aromatic compounds that are generated in-situ and that could migrate out of the generation wells," Ganesan said. In this auction process, 41 coal mines are on offer which includes fully explored and partially explored mines. These include 4 coking coal mines which are fully explored mines. These coal mines are located in states of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Odisha. The auction process will be a two-stage tender process with technical and financial bidding. Only half the estimated population in 2030 will be living in areas with clean air. Any inefficiency in the policy will lead to significant increase in the number. In 2015 alone more than half the then Indian population — approx 650 million people — were breathing air with high concentration of PM 2.5 that breached the standards provided by NAAQS. Moreover, only 1% had access to air quality approved by World Health Organisation.

India's plan for cleaner air ignores an important source of pollution

New Delhi, Feb 1 () Experts from the energy industry lauded the governments' decision on expanding the PM-KUSUM scheme and a proposal to allocate about Rs 22,000 crore to power and renewable energy sector in 2020-21, saying the step will help generate employment opportunities and give a boost to the agriculture sector.
While presenting the budget for 2020-21, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday announced expansion of Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha Utthan Mahabhiyan (PM KUSUM) Scheme under which 20 lakh farmers would be provided funds to set up standalone solar pumps.
While presenting the budget for 2020-21, the minister said that farmers would be provided funds to set up grid-connected 15 lakh solar pumps.
In her budget speech, she also proposed an outlay of Rs 22,000 crore for power and renewable energy sector for 2020-21.
Imaan Javan, the director of operations at Suntuity Renewable Energy India, "We welcome the decision which reflects the union government's commitment and concern for renewable energy generation. One of the heartening features of the Union budget is its provision for the use of renewable energy sector of Rs 22,000 crore." 
 Sitharaman deserves praise for this innovative measure which will widen the scope of the PM-KUSUM scheme and enable farmers to set up grid-connected solar power generation capacity on barren land and renewable energy sector as a way to address pollution and climate change, poverty and give the farmers their livelihood."
The industry hope the measures will give boost to the agriculture sector, and help generate employment as well in rural India, he said. 
Nikunj Ghodawat, Chief Financial Officer, CleanMax opines for the renewable energy sector, the extension of the 15 per cent and 22 per cent tax rate to the new and existing power generation companies, which was earlier only earmarked for the manufacturing sector, is a welcome move.
 The new personal income tax structure should help to increase liquidity at the hands of the individuals, which will have a trickle-down effect to boost demand and consumption across multiple sectors, he said.
Anas Rahman, Programme Associate, Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), said the announcement of the expansion of the PM-KUSUM scheme is a very positive move as it can significantly benefit the Indian farmer.
 "However, the government must address certain concerns before scaling up the scheme. The current demand-based allocation of off-grid pumps among the states does not incentivise states to better target and address the inequity in irrigation access for small and marginal land farmers," Rahman said.
Anil Chaudhry, Zone President and Managing Director, Schneider Electric India, said the Budget has affirmed its commitment to clean energy with a proposal to allocate Rs 22,000 crore for the renewable sector.
The plan to provide standalone solar powered pumps to 20 lakh farmers, allows farmers to generate solar power and set up large solar power capacity along the rail tracks will encourage the use of clean and renewable energy.
"Further, the decision to extend concessional corporate tax rate of 15 per cent to new power generating companies engaged will give a major boost to the renewable sector," Chaudhry said.
Additionally, the focus on ensuring smart metering replacing conventional energy meters by prepaid smart meters in the states and UTs over the next 3 years will prove to be a positive step in addressing the financial stress of DISCOMs, he added. 
Anish De, Partner and leader for Energy and Natural Resources practice at KPMG India, said, "Big push for solar power for farming and for fallow lands by extending the Kusum scheme. This could potentially result in 10-15 GW of new capacity creation if it materializes. This will be a big push for framer's income, but will in turn require lesser demand for grid scale power, targets for which then should be adjusted downwards."
Somesh Kumar, National Leader, Power and Utilities, EY India, said, "The budget for power sector is quite progressive. The overall outlay of 22,000 crores as well mass measures like replacement of meters with prepaid meters and freedom to choose suppliers, could bring in much needed reforms in the distribution sector reducing losses and improving customer satisfaction. Further, closure of polluting plants can go a long away in reducing carbon footprint. The success will lie in the implementation of these measures which should be taken up the in the right earnest by the States." ABI MKJ
