The recent COP28 summit in Dubai reverberated with the urgency of climate action. Amidst the flurry of discussions, a critical question emerged: can we build a sustainable future without rethinking the very materials that form the foundation of our societies? Unfortunately for the <keyword id="6378916" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="cement" source="Orion">cement</keyword> and <keyword id="34570" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="steel" source="Orion">steel</keyword> sector, a new study says no. Large-scale <keyword id="2101323" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="carbon-capture" source="Orion">carbon capture</keyword>, utilisation and storage (<keyword id="6559180" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ccus" source="Orion">CCUS</keyword>) infrastructure have often been touted as a magic bullet to address the hefty carbon footprint of steel and cement — the very lifeblood of modern infrastructure. However, recent research has discovered a yawning gap between projected and actual deployment of CCUS infrastructure. For starters, while the International Energy Agency's (<keyword id="66776" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="iea" source="Orion">IEA</keyword>) rosy 2010 scenario envisioned capturing and storing nearly 200 million metric tons of CO2 from steel and cement industries by 2021, we've only managed to lock away a meager 1 million metric tons, casting serious doubt on the IEA's projected 2000 million metric tons by 2050. The study's projections, based on historical trends and current construction plans, paint an even bleaker picture. The feasible supply of steel within carbon budgets compliant with the <keyword id="3087299" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paris-agreement" source="Orion">Paris Agreement</keyword> will fall short of the projected demand by about 35-42%, despite substantial growth in recycling and hydrogen-based production. Cement supply is even more uncertain since it has even more limited mitigation options, and will fall short of decarbonising demands by a massive 44-78%. "We are not saying that the existing scenarios are physically or economically unrealistic," clarifies Dr Takuma Watari, lead author of the study. "But simply waiting for new infrastructure to emerge and solve all our problems away is a very risky way of tackling the problem, given the scale of the challenges and the limited timeframe." The timeframe Watari is referring to is our ambitious goals to decarbonise by 2050, of course. But the fact remains that steel and cement are some of the most energy-intensive sectors worldwide. In India, they contribute to about <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0301421519306913" data-type="tilCustomLink">half of India's industry-related CO2 emission</a>s. So, how do we cope? Quantifying the scale of the required shift, the study proposes a benchmark: to adhere to Paris Agreement budgets, construction and manufacturing must use 60% and 40% less material, respectively. This is a massive change, especially for developing countries just starting to build wind underneath their feet, but a supremely important one in our current climate crisis. "The construction and manufacturing industries will have to provide the same level of services with less material by changing the way products are designed, used, and disposed of," Watari adds. Amidst these challenges, a silver lining emerges. The feasible supply, while insufficient for unbridled material consumption, can adequately meet the basic needs of a growing global population. The study highlights that global material demand for basic necessities like electricity, water, sanitation, shelter, and mobility falls well within the estimated feasible supply. The road ahead requires collective action from governments, industries, and individuals. By acknowledging the limitations of current approaches and embracing innovative solutions, we can ensure that the materials that shape our world do not come at the cost of our shared future. However, as brought up multiple times at the COP28 conference, developed nations will need to shoulder a larger share of the responsibility. "The challenge is more about equitable distribution than total quantity," emphasises Watari. "We recommend a greater responsibility be placed on high-income countries, which have much larger in-use material stocks than low-income countries." Emissions from the cement and steel sector will continue blowing past their carbon budgets, hindering warming targets

North-west England's <keyword id="505019" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="stanlow" source="Orion">Stanlow</keyword> oil refinery has stood near the banks of the river Mersey for almost 100 years. But, today, its managers want to ensure it has a low-carbon future over the next century. It produces about 17 per cent of road fuels in the UK and some heavy investment is going into decarbonising the facility -- funding plans to capture emissions and store them underground, <keyword id="35662" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="financial-times" source="Orion">Financial Times</keyword> reported. <keyword id="12769845" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="essar-group" source="Orion">Essar Group</keyword>, the India-based conglomerate, owns Stanlow and believes that, by deploying carbon capture, utilisation and storage (<keyword id="6559180" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ccus" source="Orion">CCUS</keyword>) technology, the plant will be able to prolong its life. It intends the business to play a key role in the UK's plans to build out a market for hydrogen, as a low-carbon fuel for heavy industry and transportation. "Our company view is that carbon capture will be an important part of manufacturing for our industry and that's why we're committing to it now," says Jon <keyword id="4262998" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="barden" source="Orion">Barden</keyword>, chief operating officer of <keyword id="6368035" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="essar" source="Orion">Essar</keyword> Oil. "We are firmly of the belief that delivering net zero (emissions) is a good thing for us as a business, as the transition for hydrocarbons will be a long one," he adds, Financial Times reported. Much hinges on making CCUS a success. The UK government last year backed two CCUS clusters for fast-track development, including the HyNet north-west project that the Stanlow refinery is part of. CCUS has a chequered history, with the UK government pulling funding in the last decade and doubts over the effectiveness of some international projects in operation. But the UK government has recommitted to the technology and wants to have at least five industrial clusters around the country to enable the capture of emissions from heavy industry. Essar says the chemistry and engineering is widely utilised and understood in the oil industry - though generally for maximising output by reinjecting CO2 into oilfields to squeeze out extra supply, rather than cutting emissions. As part of the HyNet cluster in the north-west of England, the plant will be used to produce so-called blue hydrogen. Blue hydrogen is created from gas but with the emissions sequestered to create a low or zero carbon fuel. This can replace the gas used to provide power to run the facility and kick-start a wider hydrogen economy, by providing a low carbon fuel for other industries, Financial Times reported. "We want to demonstrate that this is a viable technological solution and that we can implement and run it sustainably, as part of the company's own transition to lower carbon," Barden says. "The target is to get to net zero by 2040?.?.?. but getting to 70-80 per cent of net zero is possible within 10 years." Essar Group targets key role in building market for hydrogen

State-owned <keyword id="20039950" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharat-Petroleum-Corporation" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Bharat Petroleum Corporation" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="Bharat Petroleum Corporation">Bharat Petroleum Corporation</keyword> plans to invest Rs 1.7 lakh crore over the next five years to grow its core oil refining and fuel marketing business as well as in 'future big bets' of <keyword id="20115883" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="petrochemicals" source="keywords">petrochemicals</keyword> and <keyword id="19895435" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="green-energy" source="keywords">green energy</keyword>, its chairman G Krishnakumar has said. At present, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (<keyword id="19908646" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="BPCL" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="BPCL" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="BPCL">BPCL</keyword>) owns about 14 per cent of India's oil <keyword id="20064251" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="refining-capacity" source="keywords">refining capacity</keyword> and about a quarter of the fuel retailing network. It plans to grow these businesses while foraying into newer areas. The firm is now implementing the first phase of a multi-decade aspirational journey in the form of '<keyword id="22826627" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="project-Aspire" source="keywords">Project Aspire</keyword>' - its five-year strategic framework that is based on two fundamental pillars - 'Nurturing the Core' and 'Investing in Future Big Bets', he said in the company's latest annual report. "Our mid-term strategy is on a continuum. While we remain committed to growing our core businesses, which include refining and marketing <keyword id="20037698" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="petroleum-products" source="keywords">petroleum products</keyword> and upstream, we are equally focused on our big bets comprising petrochemicals, gas, green energy, non-fuel retail, and digital. "Project Aspire, with a planned capex outlay of around Rs 1.70 lakh crore over five years, will enable us to create long-term value for our stakeholders while preserving our planet for future generations," he said. "A cornerstone of our long-term strategy, Project Aspire, with a Rs 1.70 trillion investment, marks the initial phase of our multi-decade odyssey to shape the energy of tomorrow. This, coupled with our robust balance sheet, fuels our ambition to lead the <keyword id="19951336" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="energy-transition" source="keywords">energy transition</keyword>." The company is targeting net zero carbon emissions from its operations by 2040. "BPCL has drawn a net-zero roadmap, which encompasses renewable power, green hydrogen, compressed biogas, carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS), efficiency improvement and the offsets procurements. This would require a phased capital outlay of approximately Rs 1 lakh crore till 2040, and the company is geared for the same," he said. The firm's bet on continuing investing in core businesses is based on the premise that India's booming economy will drive a 4-5 per cent annual increase in energy demand and petroleum product consumption. Also, the demand for major petrochemical products is expected to rise by 7-8 per cent annually. "This presents a strategic opportunity to expand refining capacity alongside the development of integrated petrochemical complexes," he said. BPCL is implementing new petrochemical projects at two of its three oil refineries. A Rs 49,000 crore ethylene cracker project is being implemented at the Bina refinery in Madhya Pradesh, alongside raising oil refining capacity from the current 7.8 million tonnes to 11 million tonnes annually by 2029. A polypropylene project is being set up at Kochi refinery in Kerala by 2027. "To meet the anticipated demand beyond our planned expansions in Bina and Kochi, we are actively evaluating options for setting up additional integrated refining and petrochemical capacities within the next 5-7 years," Krishnakumar said without disclosing either the investments or the location of such a project. Andhra Pradesh is being speculated as the likely site after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's BJP and regional party TDP stormed to power in the state in recently concluded assembly elections. TDP has been demanding the implementation of a refinery-cum-petrochemical complex that was promised as part of the package when the state was split more than a decade back. "Our investment in the petrochemical project is consistent with our aspiration of becoming a dominant player in India's petrochemical growth story," Krishnakumar said. On energy transition, he said BPCL is targeting to build 2 gigawatts (GW) of <keyword id="19895602" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="renewable-energy" source="keywords">renewable energy</keyword> capacity by 2025 and 10 GW by 2035. "We are investing nearly Rs 1,000 crore to establish two 50 MW captive wind power plants in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, which will support our refineries in Mumbai and Bina." The firm is also investing around Rs 300 crore in 72 MWp of solar project in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. "Concomitantly, we are executing green hydrogen projects aligned with the National Green Hydrogen Mission. These projects include a 5 MW electrolyser plant at Bina refinery and a green hydrogen refuelling station with an indigenously developed electrolyser at Kochi," he noted. BPCL, he said, is committed to supporting the transition to electric mobility through a robust and accessible charging infrastructure. The company has installed over 3,000 charging stations, including fast chargers for cars and two-wheelers. 900 fast chargers are installed across 120 highway corridors, which helps address the range, discovery and time anxiety of electric vehicle (EV) owners. "Over the next five years, we aim to install 4-wheeler fast chargers at approximately 6,000 retail outlets across 400 highway corridors, prioritising high-traffic corridors like the Golden Quadrilateral and N-S/E-W highways," he said. On biofuels, he said BPCL sells petrol with 20 per cent ethanol blend at 4,279 out of its over 22,000 petrol pumps. It is also building compressed biogas plants using municipal solid waste to make gas that can be used as CNG in automobiles. The firm is also exploring partnerships in the arena. "These combined efforts, along with the upcoming commissioning of a bio-ethanol refinery, positions BPCL as a key player in India's transition to a greener fuel mix, creating a robust ecosystem for the adoption of cleaner fuels across the country," he added. BPCL is establishing a corporate venture capital fund to invest directly in promising startups. "In order to thrive in this complex and challenging business landscape, we will leverage our agility and focus on operational excellence to ensure continued success. Safety and reliability will remain our top priorities, guiding all our actions. We are committed to upholding the highest standards of corporate governance," he added. He said the energy sector of India stands at an inflection point. "The nation has an ambitious vision of becoming a USD 30 trillion developed economy by 2047. 'Viksit Bharat @2047' will necessitate an almost fourfold increase in primary energy demand." India's exponential growth trajectory will propel it to a pivotal role in the global energy market, accounting for roughly 12 per cent of world energy consumption by 2047. "The key strategic objectives for India in the energy sector will entail significant expansion in refining capacities, raising the share of gas in the energy basket from about 6 per cent to 15 per cent, establishing leadership in petrochemical exports, and sharply reducing energy imports from current levels of 47 per cent to below 25 per cent by 2030 and to zero by 2047," he said. India is targeting 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity, sourcing half of its energy needs from renewables, reducing carbon emissions by 1 billion tonnes and lowering carbon intensity by 45 per cent by 2030 with the ultimate goal of net-zero emissions by 2070. "Building on its strong Indian energy presence, BPCL aspires to meet 7-10 per cent of the nation's primary energy demand by 2047," he said.

Many climate advocates argue that CCUS is too expensive to develop and the money is better spent on technology already proven to slash emissions at scale: solar panels, wind turbines, and electric vehicles, to name a few.Even though the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/carbon-emissions-2022-record-renewables-growth-solar-wind-iea-2023-3">renewable energy transition is speeding up</a>, the pace isn't fast enough yet. The virtual summit will address key issues, select outcomes and review developments that have taken place since the conclusion of the New Delhi G20 Summit in September. Following the G20 Leaders' Summit that took place here in the national capital on September 9-10 this year, considerable progress on major G20 priorities as well as outcomes have been made. For instance, the G20 consensus on tripling renewable energy capacity globally by 2030 and doubling the global rate of energy efficiency improvement by 2030, which was committed to by G20 Leaders in Delhi for the first time, are the key expected outcomes of COP28. Volume 2 of the report of the Independent Expert Group on Strengthening of MDBs was submitted to and welcomed by the G20 Finance Ministers at the 4th meeting of Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBG) in October this year. On November 7, the IMF Executive Board proposed a quota increase to the Board of Governors. Once complete in 2027, the plant will eliminate an estimated 0.81 million tons of CO2 per year -- the equivalent of taking 400,000 cars off the road, eliminating nearly 40% of all Stanlow emissions. Vertex is developing the first large-scale, low-carbon hydrogen production hub in the UK, as part of the HyNet cluster. This will produce (in its initial phases) 1GW of hydrogen (the equivalent energy use of a large UK city like Liverpool) and capture some 1.8 million tonnes of carbon per annum. By 2030, Vertex expects to deliver nearly 4GW of low-carbon hydrogen, equivalent to 40 per cent of the UK government's national target. When the analytics firm compared this year’s data with the 225 firms analysed last year, 14 exhibited a substantial positive deviation—more significant than a 5-point rise in score. However, three companies showed a significant negative divergence with more than a 5-point decline in the score, while 139 remained generally steady. According to the most recent evaluation by the firm, just 14 organisations fall under 'leadership' classification, while 108 were classified under 'strong' and 73 under the 'below average' and 'weak' classes. "Leaders on ESG have demonstrated a clear commitment towards sustainability and have consistently delivered superior performance. For ESG to truly be embedded and practised in spirit, all stakeholders have to work collaboratively and create a favourable environment for ESG in India," says <keyword id="9407585" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="amish-mehta" source="Orion">Amish Mehta</keyword>, Managing Director and CEO of CRISIL Ltd. However, only one in five enterprises in India disclosed their Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions. India is one of 80 per cent of the world's countries committed to Net-Zero and the investment required to make this happen will be substantial! It entails minimising GHG emissions in the next 50 years, which have expanded fourfold in the previous 20 years. Over the next seven years, CRISIL estimates that India will need to invest Rs 22-25 lakh crore in decarbonisation. This involves significant investments in renewable assets and battery technology. Beyond 2030, investments will more than triple in hydrogen, CCUS, pump hydro, geothermal, and biomass-linked technologies, where India's potential is enormous but primarily untapped, says the report. As of March 2022, 82 corporations have vowed to follow the path of net-zero emissions, a 50 percent increase from 2019. As per the non-profit Climate Disclosure Project (CDP), India ranks sixth in the world in this category.

World leaders at COP26 strike agreement to 'phase down' unabated coal and call on wealthy nations to double funding to vulnerable nations

Kolkata, Apr 22 () West Bengal reported 32 new COVID-19 cases, taking the total number of active cases in the state to 300, Chief Secretary Rajiva Sinha said on Wednesday. The death toll, however, remained at 15, and six patients were discharged since Tuesday evening, he said. The active cases were reported from Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) areas, Howrah, Asansol and Siliguri, the chief secretary said. The number of people discharged from different hospitals is 79 so far, he said adding that a total of 855 samples have been tested in West Bengal since Tuesday. Most of these cases have happened because of family contact, Sinha said. A total of 394 people have been infected by coronavirus in West Bengal, while the Union Home and Family Welfare website put the figure at 423. The state government has banned the use of mobile phones inside CCUs and ICUs by both doctors and patients, the chief secretary said, adding that there will be landline phones. "One of the most infectious devices is the mobile we are using. Go to any sophisticated hospital these days and they will say mobile phones carry more germs than even shoes. We cannot take that risk. We have arranged for landlines and mobile phones should be kept outside the CCUs and ICUs. This is applicable to doctors, patients and everybody," Sinha said. SCH NN AAR

Joe Biden's climate plan appears to directly copy multiple lines from other organizations - but his campaign says it was a mistake

By Shakoor Rather New Delhi, Jul 10 () As dengue season sets in across large parts of India with the onset of the monsoon, scientists warn that COVID-19 and the mosquito-borne disease have overlapping symptoms and worry the country's healthcare infrastructure won't be able to cope with this double whammy. The impact of a 'dengue-COVID-19' season would entail two different diagnostic tests and extract a huge toll on patients too, each disease making the other more complicated to deal with and perhaps more fatal. While the number of COVID-19 cases races towards the 8,00,000 mark with 7,93,802 cases on Friday and 21,604 fatalities, the incidence of dengue is also high. Based on 2016-2019 data, virologist Shahid Jameel estimated that India gets about 100,000 to 200,000 confirmed cases of dengue each year. According to the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP), 1,36,422 dengue cases were diagnosed in 2019 and an estimated 132 people died. "The virus is endemic and present around the year in southern India, and in monsoon and early winter in northern India," Jameel, CEO at DBT/Wellcome Trust India Alliance, a public charity that invests in building biomedical sciences and health research framework, told . Both COVID-19 and have symptoms such as high fever, headache and body pain. The dengue season may aggravate the COVID-19 situation as both viruses may supplement each other, warned Dhrubjyoti Chattopadhyay, virologist and vice chancellor of the Amity University in Kolkata. "This situation is not yet well studied. But the information available from South America is dangerous and found to create a major challenge to their medical infrastructure," he said. "The effect will be very critical. As major symptoms are overlapping, simultaneous infection will be much more fatal. Weakened immune systems will help the other to be more fatal." Once the dengue season starts, added virologist Upasana Ray, the infection spreads aggressively due to high prevalence of its mosquito vector, aedes aegypti. "Each season, we experience heavy loads in the hospital wards due to dengue outbreak and those times it gets almost unmanageable. So, have we thought about what will happen when we have two menaces to handle together? Both of them have overlapping symptoms. Are we geared to distinguish if a person has dengue or COVID 19?" asked the senior scientist, CSIR-IICB, Kolkata. The challenges are many. Almost each patient with a three-day fever would need to undergo a test for dengue and another for the SARS-CoV-2 virus which causes COVID-19. "Considering the current numbers of COVID-19 patients, will our hospitals have beds available for dengue patients? Or will only severe dengue cases be handled at hospitals?" she asked. Explaining how the viruses manifest in the human body, Jameel said the dengue virus enters via a mosquito bite through the subcutaneous layer of the skin from where it reaches the lymph nodes that are rich in types of blood cells called monocytes, macrophages and dendritic cells. The virus, he said, primarily reproduces in these cells and can severely alter cytokine production by these cells, a fundamental response to injury and infection in the body. On the other hand, SARS-CoV-2 enters the cells primarily through mucosal membranes of the mouth and nasal cavity and initially replicates in the epithelial cells of the upper respiratory tract. "In some cases, however, the infection moves down the trachea into the lungs, where it infects the air sacs that exchange oxygen with blood. This causes inflammation as the immune system tries to fight the virus and leads to fluid accumulation in the lungs, which results in respiratory distress and oxygen demand. "So, you see, both viruses infect via different pathways and different cell types. There would of course be overlaps in physiological effects and immunological responses. They would most likely make each disease worse than either infection alone," Jameel noted. The most likely effect, he said, would be on healthcare capacity. "Since initial clinical presentation is similar -- high fever -- one would be ignored at the expense of the other. With hospitals mainly in COVID-19 mode, they may also refuse dengue patients," Jameel said. He said this has been already seen in connection with pregnancy care and deliveries, dialysis and tuberculosis treatment. "We need to be careful and deploy tests for dengue also for febrile illness. Thankfully, India makes some very good tests for dengue virus, e.g. NS1 antigen test that is positive on the first day of fever," said Jameel. Ray pointed out that there is no vaccine available clinically for either and no specific antiviral to treat them. "This infection may show low to severe forms of infection including simple dengue fever, severe dengue and the haemorrhagic fever," said Ray. "We are already amidst the SARS-CoV2 pandemic and hospitals are running out of beds although the government is trying its level best. We are yet to attain enough facility to handle the increasing coronavirus cases every day in India," she said. According to Ray, careful preparation is needed as the country has very little time before a full-blown dengue season starts. "While many dengue patients don't end up in critical care units (CCUs), a good fraction do. Do we have enough ICUs and CCUs to tackle dengue and COVID 19 together? As a leading member of the South Wales Industrial Cluster (SWIC), the Indian steel major said on Friday that its plan could see Tata's integrated steelworks at Port Talbot in the region playing a major role as one of four possible anchor sites. The first phase of SWIC's Roadmap and Deployment project received a significant boost thanks to grant funding of GBP 295,000 from UK Research and Innovation -- a partnership of universities, research organisations, businesses, charities, and government -- with more funding available for future stages. "SWIC presents a key opportunity to support Wales' net zero ambitions by uniting the various decarbonisation programmes in South Wales into a single roadmap for the first time," said Chris Williams, Manager Energy Research at Tata Steel in Europe. "By helping to develop an industrial strategy, which allows companies in Wales to grow while also reducing CO2 emissions, the plan will create new jobs and provide a sustainable industrial base for future generations," he said. The announcement is one of a number of initiatives to help Tata Steel's European business achieve its ambition of becoming carbon neutral by 2050. Phase one of the project will create a plan for a series of local zero-carbon areas to lower emissions, create skilled jobs and enhance well-being across South Wales. If SWIC projects proceed successfully, they will improve the UK's ability to locally manufacture steel products with low carbon emissions, helping to drive the low-carbon future of UK construction and other sectors such as defence, car manufacturing, packaging and even coin production. The SWIC initiatives will also make a vital contribution to the economic resilience of the Welsh economy by bringing in new high-skilled jobs and ensuring operations are sustainable in the long term, Tata Steel said. Key areas for SWIC in the first phase of the project include examining the infrastructure required for the development of the hydrogen economy, for large scale CO2 capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) and transport. Other partners in SWIC include Costain, CR Plus, RWE, Progressive Energy, University of South Wales, Celsa Manufacturing, Tarmac, Valero Energy, Progressive Energy, Capital Law, Flexible Process Consultants the Port of Milford Haven and Vale Europe. Tata Steel is one of Europe's leading steel producers, with steelmaking in the Netherlands and the UK, and manufacturing plants across Europe. The company supplies high-quality steel products across a wide range of sectors, including construction and infrastructure, automotive, packaging and engineering.
