The National Council of Educational Research and Training (<keyword id="20255499" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ncert" source="keywords">NCERT</keyword>) will release a new syllabus and textbooks for Classes 3 to 6 while there will be no change in the <keyword id="19917193" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="curriculum" source="keywords">curriculum</keyword> and textbooks for other grades for the academic year 2024-25 commencing from April 1, according to <keyword id="19976140" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cbse" source="keywords">CBSE</keyword> officials. The NCERT has informed the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) that new syllabi and textbooks for classes 3 and 6 are currently under development and will soon be released, the CBSE said in a communication sent to affiliated schools. "Consequently, schools are advised to follow these new syllabi and textbooks for classes 3 and 6 in place of textbooks published by NCERT till the year 2023," said <keyword id="20215578" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="joseph-emmanuel" source="keywords">Joseph Emmanuel</keyword>, Director (Academics), CBSE. "Additionally, a bridge course for class 6, and concise guidelines for class 3 are being developed by the NCERT for facilitating a seamless transition for students to new pedagogical practices and areas of study aligned with new curriculum framework, 2023. These resources will be disseminated to all the schools online once they are received from NCERT. "The Board will also organize capacity-building programs for school heads and Teachers to orient them with the new teaching learning perspectives as envisioned in NEP-2020," he added in the letter. In a revision of the National Curriculum Framework (<keyword id="21063963" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ncf" source="keywords">NCF</keyword>) after 18 years, the Ministry of Education had last year notified the changes. The NCF had undergone four revisions in the past - in 1975, 1988, 2000, and 2005. The council is in process of preparing new school textbooks in line with the new national curriculum framework for school education (NCF-SE) 2023 as a part of the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. "There will be no change in the Curriculum and textbooks for other classes for the academic year 2024-25 commencing from April 1, 2024," he said. The NCF for the foundational stage (FS) was launched by the Ministry of Education in 2022 and according to the curriculum framework, the NCERT developed and collected the learning-teaching material (LTM). Toys, puzzles, puppetry, posters, flash cards, worksheets and attractive storybooks are part of the "<keyword id="21063964" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jaadui-pitara" source="keywords">Jaadui Pitara</keyword>" launched by the Ministry of Education for learning at the foundational stage. In 2022, the NCERT had rationalised the syllabi of classes 6 to 12 to "reduce the content load" on students in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Among the changes, reflected in new textbooks published last year, the council had removed chapters on Mughal courts, 2002 Gujarat riots, cold war, references of Mughal emperors, and Emergency and periodic table. While the council maintained there was no selective omission of topics, the rationalisation exercise had created a political controversy with leaders from opposition parties alleging the ruling dispensation was "erasing history". New curriculum, books for grades 3-6 from 2024-25, no change in syllabus for other classes: CBSE

India's Education Minister defends the choice of topics deleted from CBSE syllabus

Chandigarh, Haryana Education Minister Kanwar Pal on Thursday said in order to reduce mental pressure over students, the Board of School Education would reduce the <keyword id="6375423" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="syllabus">syllabus</keyword> of the students studying in classes IX to XII in the current academic session. The Minister said that the schools remained closed across the state during the lockdown amid COVID-19 pandemic. Haryana government has made adequate arrangements to impart online education. In order to reduce mental pressure on students, now the state has decided to reduce the syllabus by following the pattern of CBSE. Pal said to reduce the syllabus, the state has instructed the Board of School Education to set up a committee by coordinating with the SCERT in Gurugram and to put up the proposal within a week after exploring all possibilities in this regard.

Haryana to reduce syllabus for classes IX to XII

The Central Board of Secondary Education (<keyword id="6356155" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="cbse">CBSE</keyword>) has reduced the syllabus for the social sciences exam by providing relief to the students of class 10 all over the country. CBSE has taken the decision of reducing the syllabus in view of providing leeway to students in the class 10 board examination. The CBSE would conduct the social sciences paper for class 10 on May 27. A total of five units from the social sciences theory topics have been removed for the students. The revised syllabus would be displayed on CBSE's official website. According to the Union Education Ministry, due to the coronavirus pandemic the working days of schools have been reduced significantly this year. Most of the students have been provided education through the online medium. In such a situation, now the students, parents and teachers themselves are also in favour of reducing the curriculum for the students. Earlier, Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank said, "In view of the extraordinary situation arising across the country due to Covid-19, CBSE has been advised to reschedule and reduce its syllabus." CBSE has reduced the syllabus by 30 per cent in various subjects after the Union Education Minister directed that the syllabus must be reduced. A specific syllabus would no longer be part of the board examinations and prescribed subjects scheduled for internal evaluation. School principals and teachers would also ensure that students are explained about the reduced subject contents to combine different topics. According to the Union Education Ministry, in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, concrete suggestions were invited from academicians from all over the country on the subject of syllabus reductions. More than 150 academicians across the country have sent their suggestions on this subject.

CBSE lightens Class 10 social science exam syllabus

Bifurcating the academic session, holding two term-end exams and rationalising the syllabus were part of the special assessment scheme for class 10 and 12 board examinations in 2021-22 announced by the <keyword id="69419" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Central-Board-of-Secondary-Education">Central Board of Secondary Education</keyword> (<keyword id="6356155" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="cbse">CBSE</keyword>) on Monday in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. The term one exams will be conducted by the Board in November-December, 2021 while the second term exams will be conducted in March-April, 2022, as per an official order by <keyword id="606469" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Joseph-Emmanuel">Joseph Emmanuel</keyword>, Director (Academic) of the CBSE. The syllabus for the board examination will be rationalised, similar to that of the last academic session, and will be notified in July 2021, it said and also announced plans to make the internal assessment and project work more "credible" and "valid". At the end of the first term, the board will organise exams in a flexible schedule between November-December 2021 with a window period of 4-8 weeks for schools situated in different parts of the country and abroad. "The exams will have Multiple Choice Questions (<keyword id="110202" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="McQ">MCQ</keyword>) including case-based MCQs and MCQs on assertion-reasoning type. Duration of test will be 90 minutes and it will cover only the rationalised syllabus of the first term. The question papers will be sent by the CBSE to schools along with the marking scheme. "The exams will be conducted under the supervision of the external center superintendents and observers appointed by CBSE. The responses of students will be captured on <keyword id="6470854" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="omr">OMR</keyword> sheets which, after scanning may be directly uploaded at the CBSE portal or alternatively may be evaluated and marks obtained will be uploaded by the school on the very same day," he added. At the end of the second term, the board would organise Term <keyword id="254453" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="II">II</keyword> or year-end examination based on the rationalised syllabus. "This examination would be held around March-April 2022 at the examination centres fixed by the board. The paper will be of two hours duration and have questions of different formats (case-based/ situation based, open ended- short answer/ long answer type). "In case the situation is not conducive for normal descriptive examination a 90-minute MCQ-based exam will be conducted at the end of the second term also," Emmanuel said. The CBSE has decided that in case the situation of the pandemic improves and students are able to come to schools or centres for taking the exams, the board would conduct Term I and II examinations at schools or centres and the theory marks will be distributed equally between the two exams. "In case the situation of the pandemic forces complete closure of schools during November-December 2021, but second term exams are held at schools or centres, the Term I MCQ based examination would be done by students online or offline from home but their weightage will be reduced in the final score," he said. Similarly, if the November-December exams are conducted in schools or centres and situation is not conducive in March-April, the result will be declared on basis of first term exams. "In case the situation of the pandemic forces complete closure of schools and Board conducted Term I and II exams are taken by the candidates from home in the session 2021-22, results would be computed on the basis of their marks clubbed with internal assessment subject to the moderation or other measures to ensure validity and reliability of the assessment," Emmanuel explained. The syllabus for the academic session 2021-22 will be divided into two terms by following a systematic approach by looking into the interconnectivity of concepts and topics by the Subject Experts. "The Board will conduct examinations at the end of each term on the basis of the bifurcated syllabus. This has been done to increase the probability of having a board conducted classes 10 and 12 examinations at the end of the academic session," he said. Schools will also use alternative academic calendar and inputs from the NCERT on transacting the curriculum. "Efforts will be made to make internal assessment, practical, project work more credible and valid as per the guidelines and moderation policy to be announced by the board to ensure fair distribution of marks," he added. The announcement by the CBSE comes after the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of board exams this year after much uncertainty. Last year too, exams of some subjects were not held. "The cancellation of exams also necessitated deliberations over alternative ways to look at the learning objectives as well as the conduct of the board examinations for next academic session in case the situation remains unfeasible," Emmanuel said. The board said that the decision has been arrived at following stakeholder consultations with government and private schools from across the country including the ones from remote rural areas and a majority of them have requested for the rationalisation of the syllabus, similar to last year in view of reduced time permitted for organising online classes. "The board has also considered the concerns regarding differential availability of electronic gadgets, connectivity and effectiveness of online teaching and other socio-economic issues specially with respect to students from economically weaker section and those residing in far-flung areas of the country," Emmanuel said. "It's a lie. (Chapters on) Mughals have not been dropped. There was a rationalisation process last year because due to Covid, there was pressure on students everywhere," the <keyword id="116349" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ncert-director" source="Orion">NCERT director</keyword> told ANI. The NCERT chief further said that expert committees examined the books from standards 6-12. "They recommended that if this chapter is dropped, it won't affect the knowledge of the children and an unnecessary burden can be removed...The debate is unnecessary. Those who don't know can check the textbooks...," Saklani said. He said that even today students are studying the history of the Mughals in NCERT's class 7th book. "Along with this, the history of Mughals is being taught in Empires in section-2 of the 11th class book. And in the class 12th book there were 2 chapters on the history of the Mughals, out of which theme nine was removed last year, while theme eight is still being taught to the students. This year no chapter has been removed from any book," Saklani further said. "We are working as per NEP (National Education Policy) 2020. This is a transition phase. NEP 2020 speaks of reducing the content load. We are implementing it. NCF (National Curriculum Framework) for school education is being formed, it will be finalised soon. Textbooks will be printed in 2024 as per NEP. We have not dropped anything right now," the NCERT chief said while stressing the National Education Policy. On Monday, Uttar Pradesh Secondary Education Minister Gulab Devi also denied the reports claiming of removing the chapter of the Mughal Sultanate from CBSE and UP Board. "There is no change of any kind in our syllabus. Those who are running this type of misleading news, I request them not to run such news," Gulab Devi said. If there will be any further changes under the new education policy, then it cannot be said. At present, there is no change. The curriculum which was in 2022 will remain the same this time in 2023-24, she said.
