<ul class="summary-list"><li>My husband and I had our first child right before we turned 40 and it changed how we travel.</li><li>Travel has turned into brief <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/ways-europe-road-trips-europe-different-from-united-states-2023-5">road trips</a>, long stays at beaches, and  hotels with spacious rooms.</li></ul><p>Before parenthood, travel for my husband and me meant long layovers, adventure, and adrenaline.</p><p>We spent our late 20s and most of our 30s traveling off the beaten path, taking <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/tried-skipping-first-part-of-flight-save-money-failed-skiplagging-united-2023">budget flights,</a> and staying at hostels or hotels with shared bathroom facilities.</p><p>Then, we had our son a few months before our 40th birthdays.</p><p>A lot of things changed once we were <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/tips-for-flying-with-babies-2017-6">traveling with a baby</a>.</p><h2><strong>We went from backpacking adventures to seeking out spacious hotel rooms </strong></h2><div type="image" title="Author Lily C. We also had to be really careful not to knock over the curated items in our pretty but small room.</p><p>After that trip, we learned to only book rooms that are at least 20 square meters, so we have space for our kid's travel cot, stroller, and other belongings.</p><p>Gone were also the days of just <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/how-i-pack-only-carry-on-month-long-trip-packing-tips-2023">traveling with only carry-ons</a>. We began to check a large piece of luggage to fit all of the essentials for a family of three.</p><p>And, after years of enjoying Europe's excellent public transportation, we bought a car.</p><p>We ditched <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/things-people-should-never-do-on-airplanes-flight-attendant-tips">long-haul flights</a> and learned to enjoy road trips to towns just a couple hours' drive from where we lived. Since we're based in Switzerland, that meant places like Austria, France, and Italy.</p><p>Driving gave us the freedom to bring all of the supplies a baby needs, from stacks of diapers to toys and outfit changes.</p><p>Now that our child is a toddler, our requirements are shifting again. We all love a good beach where we can stay for several days.</p><p>Our child stays busy using his imagination on the sand, and one of us adults can go for a walk or swim while the other keeps an eye on him.</p><h2><strong>Our travel style has shifted, but we're still having great adventures</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Author Lily C. It's now a requirement to stay in a spacious hotel room with a playground nearby.</p><p>I'm grateful for the freedom and adventure we had during our early days as a couple. But I'm OK with how much our travel style has changed, and I know it'll keep changing as our son gets older.</p><p>Our kid is teaching us a new way of traveling — and we're becoming comfortable doing one thing at a time and exploring places at a slow pace.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Two EMS workers are facing a wrongful death lawsuit over strapping a patient facedown on a stretcher.</li><li>Peter Cadigan and Peggy Finley were sued Thursday by the family of Earl Moore Jr.</li></ul><p>Two EMS workers <a href="https://www.insider.com/illinois-paramedics-charged-murder-patient-death-strapped-facedown-2023-1">charged with first-degree murder</a> in the death of a patient they strapped facedown to a stretcher are now also facing a wrongful death lawsuit from the patient's family, attorneys announced at a press conference Thursday.</p><p>Peter Cadigan, 50, and Peggy Finley, 44, are accused of killing Earl Moore Jr., a 35-year-old patient who called 911 for help on December 18, 2022.</p><p>Moore's mother, Rosena Washington, sued the two emergency responders in Illinois state court. Washington told reporters on Thursday she wanted Cadigan and Finley to be held accountable for her son's death. </p><p>"He needed emergency medical attention. Instead, these workers treated him like he wasn't even human. They tied him down like some kind of animal," she said. "They killed him. My baby suffocated because of their actions and their inaction."</p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7X4Pz9Msgk0" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Body camera footage</a> from the Springfield police officers at the scene showed the EMS workers treating Moore with apparent disdain and indifference throughout their interaction with him. First, Finely refused to help Moore to the stretcher waiting outside his home, then Cadigan helped position Moore facedown on the stretcher before strapping him in.</p><p>Finley could also be heard in the footage making rude comments to Moore throughout the incident and threatening to leave him behind if he didn't walk out to the stretcher on his own. Moore, who was incoherent and in visible discomfort, was seen throughout the footage writhing on his bed and the floor of his bedroom.</p><p>"You're gonna have to walk, because we ain't carrying you," Finley told Moore at one point. "Cause I am seriously not in the mood for this dumb s---."</p><p>She also ordered Moore to "get up, or you can stay here" at another point. Finley and Cadigan also made no apparent attempts to physically examine Moore or assess his vitals before loading him into the ambulance, according to the footage. </p><p>An autopsy report listed Moore's cause of death as "compressional and positional asphyxia due to prone facedown restraint on a paramedic transportation cot/stretcher by tightened straps across the back and lower body, in the setting of lethargy and underlying chronic alcoholism."</p><p>The civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who is representing Moore's family, said Cadigan and Finley's actions that night were inexcusable. </p><p>"These healthcare professionals, they knew better. And if they know better, they should do better. But I guess they said Earl didn't matter," Crump told reporters at the press conference. "Well, Earl matters, Black lives matter, and we're going to make sure they're never going to be able to forget the name Earl Moore Jr."</p><p>An attorney representing Cadigan did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment, nor did a representative of LifeStar EMS.</p><p>Finley and Cadigan made their first court appearances in connection to their first-degree murder charges on Thursday morning. They will appear again for a preliminary hearing on Friday.</p><p>Finley's attorney, W. Scott Hanken, told Insider Finley intends to plead not guilty. Hanken said he believes the claims his client are better handled in civil rather than criminal court.</p><p>"To try to turn this into a criminal matter is something I cannot comprehend," Hanken told Insider. "And I've been doing this for a while."</p>

The Illinois EMS workers facing murder charges are now being sued by the family of the patient who was strapped face down on a stretcher

It has been edited for length and clarity</em></p><p>I found out I was pregnant in October 2020, but after three <a href="https://www.insider.com/pregnancy-after-miscarriage">miscarriages</a>, I wouldn't let myself feel the joy of the new life growing inside me until I was fairly confident I would carry the baby full term. When I hit the 20-week mark, I finally felt a flutter of excitement at the thought of holding my baby in only a matter of months. </p><p>William was born in June. He was perfect. We stayed in the hospital for five days so I could recover from some hemorrhaging during the birth, but William appeared completely healthy, and there were no concerns about sending us home.</p><p>The first few days at home were full of finding our feet as a family of three. William was really irritable and hard to settle, but we had heard it was common for babies to have colic and put it down to that. When he was 13 days old, we started to wonder whether his fussiness was more than colic. We just couldn't calm him. When <a href="https://www.insider.com/when-to-go-to-hospital-for-fever">we took his temperature</a>, we were alarmed to find the thermometer read almost 102 degrees Fahrenheit. </p><p>I rang our out-of-hours doctor, and they instructed us to head right to the emergency room. We were seen immediately and given several antibiotics but still didn't fully comprehend the severity of our son's case, thinking it was just a fever that would go down with medicine. </p><p>As we waited for a room at a ward, I overheard a nurse instructing the patient next to us to stay quiet as there was a seriously ill baby right next door. That was when the ball dropped — William was very sick. </p><h2>My son had caught group B strep</h2><p>The following hours were a bit of a blur. Between 10 and 15 people surrounded his cot and put him on oxygen right away. He was seizing, and they were trying to get the seizures under control and stabilize him. </p><p>Once it was safe, they moved him to an operating room to put him on life support, where we watched as they carried out the six-hour procedure. It's the most traumatic memory I will ever have.</p><p>William was transported to one hospital for heart-condition tests, and then to another hospital where he was given more tests and scans, including an MRI. The doctors reported back that William had late-onset group B Streptococcus, which had turned into sepsis and meningitis. The MRI confirmed that William had suffered brain damage from the seizures. </p><p>As I researched <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/groupbstrep/about/fast-facts.html#:~:text=Pregnant%20Women,-About%201%20in&amp;text=A%20pregnant%20woman%20who%20tests,disease%20is%201%20in%20200.">group B strep,</a> I became dejected because it was something we could have tested for during my <keyword id="6357793" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="pregnancy" source="Orion">pregnancy</keyword>. If we had known about the infection, he could have been treated. But because the infection is not <a href="https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/group-b-strep/">routinely tested for in the UK</a>, William will live with significant challenges for the rest of his life.</p><p>We brought him home for the second time after nearly two weeks in hospitals. After three weeks, he started to have seizures again, so he was brought back in for observation for another five weeks. A second MRI showed a blockage on the brain causing the seizures, so at only 12 weeks old, William had brain surgery.</p><p>William is 10 months old now, and he is a delight to both me and his dad. We are still processing everything we've been through. The emotion sometimes just hits me out of the middle of nowhere. But I just have to get on with it.</p><p>We have to be strong for William, to fight for him. He is the one getting us through this, even on the really hard days.</p>

"I've never done one this young," the post office worker said, snapping a picture. </p><p>When I married a man from Australia, I knew that <keyword id="11896628" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="travel" source="Orion">travel</keyword> would be a fixture in our family life. Even so, I've <a href="https://www.insider.com/travel-influencers-share-why-they-travel-with-their-kids-2021-9">traveled with kids more</a> than I ever imagined. During the pandemic, we <a href="https://www.insider.com/tips-to-enjoy-long-road-trips-with-children-2021-8">spent seven months traveling</a> through 33 states with our two kids. </p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/flying-with-kids-horror-stories-from-parents-during-pandemic-2021-8">Traveling with kids</a><a href="https://www.insider.com/travel-editor-kids-wouldnt-stop-me-from-traveling-2021-11"> can scare off even the most seasoned jet-setters</a>. But it doesn't have to. If being stuck at home has left you dreaming of a family trip, it's time to get planning. Here are my tips for success. </p><h2><strong>Take care of yourself</strong></h2><p>It's easy to spend most of your energy thinking about what's going to make your kids happy. But the truth is, we are also traveling for ourselves. Make sure to take some time and space to think about how you'll take care of yourself during travel. </p><p>This can happen on a basic level. When I traveled to Dubai with a 3-month-old, I spent ages perfecting my carry-on with everything the baby would need, but I never thought to put in a change of clothes for myself. When she vomited on me during landing, I found myself arriving in a conservative country in my undershirt — not my finest moment. </p><h2><strong>Embrace the small moments</strong></h2><p>To survive with children, you have to learn to find joy in the little moments, and it's no different with travel. </p><p>I'll never forget my 6-year-old staring at the ground hunting for rocks while my husband and I gazed skyward, taking in the massive open space of Arches National Park. She was having as much fun as we were. </p><p>During one long-haul flight with a 6-month-old, I called to book a bassinet seat. The airline representative asked whether I wanted a meal for the baby, who was hardly eating solids. I was prepared to say no when she took a grandmotherly tone. </p><p>"I used to be a flight attendant," she said. "Get the meal. Eight hours into this flight you'll be thankful that she has something new to look at."</p><p>She was absolutely right. That meal served as a perfect novelty for my baby so I could eat my dinner in peace. </p><h2><strong>Take help</strong></h2><p>When I flew a long international flight solo with an infant, my biggest concern was how I was going to use the bathroom on the 12-hour flight. I called up a woman I used to nanny for, who was an experienced international traveler with three kids. </p><p>"Take every bit of help," she told me. Once, she said, an airline worker escorted her and two small kids off the plane in a wheelchair simply because he offered and it was easier than wrangling the children. That image set my mind at ease during the moment when I needed an extra set of hands. </p><p>I peed on that flight thanks to the flight attendants who held my baby and the child-free woman next to me who watched her doze in her cot. </p><p>Traveling with kids is different. There's no way to completely step away from your daily routine. You'll spend a lot of time doing the same boring <keyword id="11910745" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="parenting" source="Orion">parenting</keyword> tasks you do at home, albeit in a new space. Despite that, I've realized that traveling with kids can fill my cup, almost as much as solo travel used to. </p>

<p>Last weekend, 24 guys from the business and finance communities, including Pershing Square Capital's CEO, Bill Ackman, and Kase Capital's Whitney Tilson, got a taste of the infamous six-month BUD/S course that aspiring Navy SEALS go through.</p>

</div></div>The group participated in the "Leadership Under Fire" program. It's hosted by San Diego-based award-winning leadership and team-building company <a href="http://www.sot-g.com/">Special Operations Training Group</a>, or SOT-G. It was <a href="http://www.sot-g.com/">founded in 2005</a> by former Navy SEAL Rob Roy and author of the upcoming book <a href="http://www.sot-g.com/the-art-of-war/">"The Navy SEAL Art of War."</a>
<p>Roy, who was a member of SEAL Team Six, said the program is about personal growth.</p>
<p>"What you are going to take away is who you are as an individual," Roy told Business Insider. "If you don't know who you are when you get there, you will when you leave."</p>
<p>He explained that the physical stuff wears off and that it's the lessons of humor, creativity, teamwork, decision-making, planning, communication, and mental toughness that participants take home.</p>
<p>Roy added that the program aims to instill four pillars of leadership: inspiration, direction, guidance, and hope.&#xa0;</p>

</div></div>About 99% of the participants are company executives. A large contingency comes from New York and the hedge funds based there.
<p>Apparently the program was a huge success for this past weekend's group with Ackman and Tilson.</p>
<p>"Overall, it was an incredible experience," Tilson wrote in a group email seen by Business Insider.</p>
<p>He wrote: "Over 2½ days (~4pm Thursday to ~6am Sunday), we swam nearly two miles in the ocean in the middle of the night in 59-degree water (with wetsuits, thankfully!), paddled 6-person inflatable dinghies through the surf again and again during one day and for many miles during another night, crept (stumbled?) around in the dark for an hour preparing to assault a 'terrorist camp', lifted, carried, curled and ran with nearly 200-lb. logs for a couple of hours, slept for two night in cots in tents on a beach, did more running, push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, bear-crawls, crab-walks, wheelbarrow races, fireman's carries, etc. than we'd ever done before, crawled in the sand until our knees and elbows looked like a belt sander had worked on them, learned self-defense techniques, how to walk patrol, respond as a team to being shot at, raid a room and building, etc."</p>

</div></div>That sounds intense, but it wasn't the hardest part, according to Tilson.&#xa0;
<p>"The worst drill was called the "whistle drill": on one whistle, you dropped down onto your belly in the sand; when you heard two whistles, you started crawling toward the instructor; and three meant you leapt to your feet. After the first whistle, he [our instructor] mostly just kept blowing two whistles over and over - and moving backwards to keep just out of reach, up the beach, down the beach, around in circles, etc. Just when the fast guys had reached the front, he liked to walk around in a circle and go in the other direction, so the slow guys were now in front and the fast guys were stuck in the back of a scrum of sweating, miserable humanity. (Have you ever seen lots of baby turtles crawling out of the ocean, up the beach, leaving tracks? It was sort of like that.) If you lifted your butt or tried to crawl on your hands and knees, they screamed "you cheater"! Within a minute or two, your elbows and knees started to chafe badly - and it progressed from there to pure torture."</p>

</div></div>Being able to put yourself through a regimen this intense would require months of preparation. Roy told us that participants have to train well in advance.&#xa0;
<p>Tilson said he began training six months ago. As a result, he's now in the best shape of his life.</p>
<p>Still, the SEAL training was intense.&#xa0;</p>
<p>"I could barely walk on Sunday as I was feeling acute pain in muscles I never knew I had!"</p>
<p>The pain was clearly worth it, though.</p>
<p>"Every one of us pushed ourselves harder physically and perhaps also mentally than we ever had before, learned a lot about leadership and teamwork - and about ourselves and each other. It was an intense bonding experience and an outside-the-box, once-in-a-lifetime experience. And it was just really cool hanging out with the SEALs and seeing how they operate," Tilson wrote.</p>
<p>It sounds awesome.</p>
