<ul class="summary-list"><li>During the Business Insider's IGNITION: <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="transportation">Transportation</keyword> conference, <keyword id="6362418" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="lyft">Lyft</keyword> executive <keyword id="10190619" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="caroline-samponaro">Caroline Samponaro</keyword> said some changes made to cope with the pandemic should stick around for a bit.</li><li>"We hope we get back to some sort of routine that is somewhat normal, but we don't have to leave behind the great things that we've done, the creative things that we've done," she said.</li><li>Samponaro also spoke to helping cities improve infrastructure to make them more friendly for "micromobility" solutions like shared electric scooters.</li></ul><p>Caroline Samponaro, head of transit and micromobility at Lyft, hopes that the changes made around the globe when it comes to transportation  during the coronavirus pandemic will stick around long-term. </p><p>"When we think about where we go from here, of course, we hope we get back to some sort of routine that is somewhat normal, but we don't have to leave behind the great things that we've done, the creative things that we've done,"  Samponaro said during<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/ignition-transportation"> Business Insider's IGNITION: Transportation virtual live event last week</a>.</p><p>She was referring to a national cycling boom and widespread efforts to make streets more friendly to pedestrians and other non-car users. Lyft, which became the country's biggest bike share operator in 2018 by  acquiring Motivate, has recorded its biggest year of bike rentals, as the pandemic has pushed people to avoid public transit, and rethink how they move around.  </p><p>"The silver lining of a terrible period of time we've been in as Americans, and people around the world, is really being challenged, forced, inspired to try a new way to go about their day-to-day routine," Samponaro said. </p><p>Samponaro also spoke to helping cities improve infrastructure to make them more friendly for <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bikes-and-electric-scooter-industry-whats-next-in-ten-years-2020-3">"micromobility"</a> solutions like shared electric scooters, urban planners having a better ability to give input on how cities are built, and how to address some health concerns that may coincide with more congested cities. </p><p>The entire panel is available to watch <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKMueU2_8dQ&amp;feature=youtu.beu.be">here</a>.</p>

She'll steer bike, scooter, and pedestrian policy as the company races towards an initial public offering and invest heavily in expanding its footprint beyond automobiles.</p><p>"When John Zimmer, the founder of Lyft, reached out to me about this job, I didn't know what to expect to be honest - I had never met him," Samponaro said in an interview. It's also launched scooters in six markets with plans to reach 10 by the end of the year.</p><p>Lyft has also <a href="https://blog.lyft.com/posts/lyft-becomes-americas-largest-bikeshare-service">pledged to invest $100 million more into its bike and scooter program</a>, bringing its total to 40,000 bikes over the next five years. (It's currently at roughly 30,000, according to a spokesperson). And perhaps most importantly, it has begun to integrate the alternative modes into its main car app.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://blog.lyft.com/posts/lyft-becomes-americas-largest-bikeshare-service">Lyft</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Not only will you soon be able to book a bike in the same screen as a shared or private car ride, Samponaro - along with her boss, former Department of Transportation chief Anthony Foxx - are ensuring there's a thoughtful crossover between the modes in a way that keeps everyone safe.</p><p>"We partnered with advocates and the city to get ahead of protected bike lanes within our app, " explained Samponaro, "by geo-fencing the bike route so that we create a dedicated drop-off and pickup location for drivers so they aren't double parking in the bike lane."</p><p>Other technologies coming soon include more pedal-assist bikes, like the ones which rolled out in New York recently that can make hills and long distances a breeze. The company's also taken a unique approach to scooters - one that doesn't involve vehicles parked anywhere (and often, everywhere).</p><p>"Bringing the<span>  </span>benefits of docket bike share to the scooter landscape is a top priority for us," Samponaro said, adding that Lyft will "have exciting stuff to share in the coming months on that."</p><p>Until then, Lyft will likely continue to see lots of competition as scooter startups like Lime and Bird <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bird-lime-pitching-uk-government-to-trial-electric-scooters-2018-8"><span>continue their rapid expansion across the United States and abroad</span></a>. Uber, meanwhile, is also <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uber-fails-to-downplay-bird-and-lime-acquisition-reports-at-ignition-2018-12"><span>rumored to be in the market to buy a scooter company</span></a> to add to its arsenal alongside <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uber-buys-jump-bikes-2018-4"><span>Jump Bikes, which it bought in April. </span></a></p><p>But as both Lyft and Uber race towards listing their stock on public markets as soon as next year, Samponaro's focus isn't on the business - it's still on safety, just like her activism work has been for more than a decade.</p><p>"There are eight parking spots for every car in the US," she said. Lyft just made a big hire that confirms the company's ambitions extend well beyond cars

Lyft will now suggest two-wheeled, more eco-friendly options, if they're available.</p><p>Bikes and scooters will now be surfaced alongside shared and private car rides as part of a major app redesign, the <a href="https://blog.lyft.com/posts/lyft-multimodal-app">ride-hailing company announced Tuesday</a>, and the update is set to roll out out to all users in the coming weeks.</p><p>It's another part of Lyft's mission to reduce the number of cars on city streets and the associated pollution they produce, the company's head of bike and scooter policy told Business Insider.</p><p>"Once people give it a try, and they get that experience, that joy that you get when you bike to work as opposed to taking another way, I think it's hard to go back," Caroline Samponaro, who joined Lyft in the executive role last year, said in an interview.</p><p>"As someone who's been bike commuting for more than a decade in New York City, when I tell people that at first they're like 'you're crazy' and it's hard for me to put into words. It's easier, I promise! and it's cheaper."</p><p>Public transit options will also be displayed as an option in the cities - one of every five in the US - where Lyft has data. One in every eight trips taken in cities where Lyft operates bikes or scooters was taken on a two-wheeled vehicle as opposed to a car, the company said.</p><p>That momentum in New York City specifically, where Lyft operates the United States' largest bike-share program, continually breaks daily ridership records following the addition of bikes to the core Lyft app. Most recently, New Yorkers took 100,000 rides in a single day in September.</p><p>Still, amidst a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lyft-citi-bike-expands-bronx-amid-spate-nyc-bike-deaths-2019-7">dramatic uptick of cyclist deaths in the city</a>, Lyft agrees with many city leaders that more must be done to improve safety.</p><p>"Politics can get in the way of doing something simple like building a bike lane on the street," Samponaro said.</p><p>"What we're doing here is working hand-in-hand with the city. They have the goal to redesign streets and to make them safe for people on two wheels, people walking, and people getting to transit. For now, the bike lanes will only show in places where bikes and scooters have been added to the core Lyft app, that's most everywhere except Boston and Portland. </p><p>Lyft hopes that by showing all <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="transportation">transportation</keyword> options, riders might opt for a green bike or scooter ride over a gas-powered car for their trip.</p><p>"We believe that providing clear information about bike lanes in our app will encourage more people to choose two-wheeled transportation for their trip," Caroline Samponaro, Lyft's head of bike and scooter policy, said in a press release. "Each ride on a bike or scooter represents a win for the environment, congestion, and a more livable city -- and that's what Lyft is all about."</p><p><strong><em>Read more: </em></strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lyft-already-profitable-on-ride-hailing-in-some-cities-jpmorgan-2019-8"><em>Lyft's main taxi business is already profitable in some areas, but self-driving cars and bike-sharing are eating into that revenue</em></a></p><p>Earlier this year, Lyft<a href="https://blog.lyft.com/posts/2019/4/17/lyfts-commitment-to-sharing-the-road"> launched a small pilot program</a> on one San Francisco street that automatically directed drivers to safe pickup and dropoff spots that were out of the bike lane and didn't impede traffic. The company says news on the pilot's expansion is coming soon.</p><p>Bikes, meanwhile, continue to show massive growth for Lyft. The company declined to disclose any ridership numbers to investors in quarterly earnings reports, but said last week that CitiBike in New York <a href="https://twitter.com/CitiBikeNYC/status/1172156337838579713?s=20">set a daily record of 92,341 rides</a>. That system, the largest in Lyft's fleet, is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lyft-citi-bike-expands-bronx-amid-spate-nyc-bike-deaths-2019-7">set to grow </a>over the next two years through its third and final expansion phase.</p><p>But that growth hasn't been without struggles, as the entire industry is learning.</p><p>Lyft <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lyft-electric-pedal-assist-citi-bikes-new-york-offline-until-at-least-september-2019-5">pulled its electric bikes from New York, Washington DC, and San Francisco earlier this year</a> after a brake malfunction sent some riders over the handlebars. When a rebranded version of the pedal-assist bike relaunched in San Francisco, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lyft-bikes-fire-san-francisco-fire-2019-7">fires forced the bikes offline once again.</a></p><p>Uber, which was using the same bikes at the time, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2019/04/16/uber-fixed-electric-bikes-that-had-similar-problems-bikes-lyft-recalled/">said it was able to fix the brake problem</a>, and its bikes are still active in many markets. However, the company has recently <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uber-raising-prices-on-jump-bikes-in-several-cities-2019-7">raised prices in some locations</a> and pulled the bikes from others, including San Diego, Atlanta, Dallas, San Antonio, Staten Island, and <a href="https://www.outsideonline.com/2402196/uber-jump-ebike-failure">Providence</a>. Scooters will remain in some markets, and the company hopes to have bikes on the roads again in Providence this fall, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uber-jump-bikes-vandalism-crime-providence-rhode-island-2019-8">it said. </a></p><p>Lyft officials have declined to comment on its expansion plans for bikes and scooters, but told analysts in August that more investment was on the way.</p><p>"Collectively, we expect our bike and scooter investments to keep Lyft top of mind and increase both active riders and revenue per active rider," CEO Logan Green said on the conference call. Each dot represents a docking station.</p></div><p></p></div></div>The latest expansion to the previously unserved borough as well as new neighborhoods in Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan involves more than tripling the number bikes currently in the system to 40,000 by 2023, <a href="https://www1.nyc.gov/office-of-the-mayor/news/351-19/de-blasio-administration-details-major-citi-bike-expansion"><span>officials said. </span></a></p><p>When Lyft purchased Motivate, which operates Citi Bike as well as similar programs in Chicago, San Francisco, Washington, DC, and other major cities, the company pledged a $100 million investment in the system's continued growth. Tuesday's announcement is a further continuation of that investment, the company said.</p><p>"Here in New York, Citi Bike's expansion to new neighborhoods will provide convenient, affordable, and sustainable transit access to many additional New Yorkers, shortening commutes, boosting public health, and building connections between communities across our great city," Caroline Samponaro, Lyft's head of micromobility policy and former bike activist, <a href="https://www1.nyc.gov/office-of-the-mayor/news/351-19/de-blasio-administration-details-major-citi-bike-expansion"><span>said in a press release. </span></a></p><p>Citi Bike came under fire earlier this month when a group called New York Communities for Change<a href="https://www.scribd.com/document/416458251/New-York-Communities-for-Change-Citi-Bike-Report"><span> published a report</span></a> blasting the system for largely serving areas that were made up of white, wealthy, customers.</p><p>"Our analysis finds that the Citi Bike network mainly serves a privileged population that already has strong transit options," <a href="https://www.scribd.com/document/416458251/New-York-Communities-for-Change-Citi-Bike-Report"><span>the report said.</span></a> "Future expansions of bike sharing in NYC, either through the existing Citi Bike system or through the introduction of new competitors, should expand the effective size of the population who can access the subway in neighborhoods of high social need."</p><p>To its credit, Lyft offers discounted passes for public housing residents and those who receive other government benefits. Fifteen cyclists have died since the beginning of 2019, far outpacing previous years. Advocates, including the organization TransAlt, have called the Mayor's Vision Zero plan ineffective, and have staged many demonstrations to call attention to the fatalities.</p><p>This month, the group staged a "die in" at Washington Square Park in Manhattan's Greenwich Village, with members holding signs with the names of killed cyclists.</p><p>"Some people say that there are too many people on bikes in New York. We say there are too many cars," Ellen McDermott, the co-deputy director at <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="transportation">Transportation</keyword> Alternatives, one of the organizers of the event,<a href="https://www.amny.com/transit/cyclist-die-in-washington-square-park-1.33653749"><span> told AM New York at the time.</span></a> "It is time to change how we build our streets. What's more, the application reveals plans to use augmented reality, or AR, to project riders' locations to make them easier to find.</p><p>Here's how it's worded in the filing:</p><p>In other words, Lyft wants to use the troves of data it's amassed in its now six years of giving rides to make the pick-up and drop-off process as seamless as possible. Instead of scanning a crowd for one person staring at their phone who might be looking for their ride, the app could show the driver exactly which person is their rider, and vice-versa. Lyft wants to use augmented reality to make it easier to meet your driver

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul class="summary-list"><li><strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/new-york-city">New York City</a>'s streets saw 200 deaths last year, the lowest number ever recorded.&#xa0;</strong></li><li><strong>However, Pedestrian and motorcycle deaths saw an increase over 2017.&#xa0;</strong></li><li><strong>The total reduction is thanks in part to the Mayor's Vision Zero plan which went into effect about three years ago.&#xa0;</strong></li><li><strong>Some advocates are hoping a congestion charge on vehicles entering Manhattan could help reduce the number of deaths even more.&#xa0;&#xa0;</strong></li></ul><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/new-york-city">New York City</a> saw its lowest number of traffic deaths in the 108-years that the data has been recorded, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/08/nyregion/nyc-pedestrian-deaths.html?module=inline">the New York Times first reported Wednesday.</a></p><p>Some 200 people died on city streets in the five boroughs in 2018, according to data released by City officials, 114 of which were pedestrians. That's down from a total of 222 in 2017.</p><p>Here's the full rundown:</p><p>Pedestrian and motorcycle deaths were the only categories to record an uptick in 2018.</p><p>Vision Zero was adopted by Mayor Bill de Blasio in 2014 with the goal of eliminating traffic deaths in the city by 2024. It's <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2014/05/13/nyregion/de-blasio-looks-toward-sweden-for-road-safety.html?action=click&amp;module=RelatedCoverage&amp;pgtype=Article&amp;region=Footer"><span>modeled after a Swedish program</span></a>, where it's reduced the total fatality rate in Stockholm to 1.1 deaths per 100,000 people, about one-third of New York's at the time.</p><p>"Skeptics thought it would have been impossible," [to implement such an over-arching piece of legislation," Caroline Samponaro, a former executive at the non-profit <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="transportation">Transportation</keyword> Alternatives who now works for Lyft, said in a recent interview with Business Insider. "but now we're seeing cities across the US follow suit."</p><p>A major hallmark of the legislation was reducing the speed limit on all 6,000-miles worth of city streets to<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2014/11/08/nyregion/a-lower-speed-limit-takes-effect-in-the-city-lower-speed-maybe-not-much.html?module=inline"><span> 25 miles-per-hour from 30</span></a>. At the lower speed, human injuries sustained being hit by a car can be much less deadlier, <a href="https://www.aaafoundation.org/sites/default/files/2011PedestrianRiskVsSpeed.pdf"><span>according to a 2011 report from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. </span></a></p><p>Other tactics in the program include more stringent enforcement of traffic laws.</p><p>"Drivers haven't taken their responsibility to yield very seriously," Mayor de Blasio told the New York Times. "There has been a lot of enforcement, and there will be more."</p><h2><strong>Advocates hope congestion pricing could further reduce fatalities </strong></h2><p>While the number of deaths has dropped, the number is still staggeringly high for some safe-streets advocates.</p><p>"It's an achievement, and it should be celebrated," Marco Conner, deputy director of Transportation Alternatives, told the New York Times. "But I think the big question is: Why aren't we doing more against the enormity of the epidemic? We're only really taking baby steps."</p><p>A congestion charge could help that.</p><p>The group says a tax on vehicles entering Manhattan's central business district (which has yet to be defined, but likely anywhere below 60th street), could reduce the number of cars and in turn reduce crashes.</p><p><em><strong>Read more: </strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/a-marijuana-tax-could-help-fix-new-yorks-crumbling-subway-system-2018-12"><span style="color: #000000;">A marijuana tax could help fix New York's crumbling subway system</span></a></em></p><p>Such a scheme has yet to make significant inroads in the US, but many advocates point to London's congestion charge, which has been in place since 2003. In the years since, Britain's capital has seen a <a href="https://consultations.tfl.gov.uk/roads/cc-changes-march-2014/user_uploads/cc-impact-assessment.pdf"><span>10% drop in total traffic volume within the zone while generating 1.2 billion GBP for the region's transportation agency.</span></a></p><p>Some New York elected officials have begun to call for a similar measure here, namely <a href="https://nyc.streetsblog.org/2018/12/28/streetsies-2018-corey-johnson-is-the-vision-zero-hero-of-the-year/"><span>city council speaker Corey Johnston</span></a>. Mayor de Blasio, on the other hand, has been <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/21/nyregion/de-blasio-congestion-pricing.html"><span>slow to embrace the tax</span></a>.
