Gautam Adani surpasses Mukesh Ambani as the richest Indian after Hindenburg verdict

The world’s second richest man, <keyword id="124095" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Carlos-Slim">Carlos Slim</keyword>, was believed to be in India around two weeks back to explore a partnership between his America Movil and Indian business houses with telecom interests. 
 
America Movil's high-profile chairman, worth $77.1 billion according to Forbes, apparently met Videocon Group Chairman Venugopal Dhoot as well as senior executives of some other mobilephone firms. 
 
Slim, who is referred to as the 'Warren Buffett of Mexico', was quite optimistic about growth opportunities presented by the Indian telecom market, one of the people aware of talks with top Indian executives told Economic Times. 
 
Slim, world’s richest man after Bill Gates, is facing still challenges in Mexico, which is why he is now testing water in India and exploring a partnership between his company and Indian firms. 
 
America Movil, which counts Brazil, the US and Austria as its biggest markets after Mexico, is facing stiff challenges at home. Margins have shrunk to their narrowest since 2013 after a change in law sought to deter a dominant market player, or one that holds more than 50% of the market, from charging competitors for calls on its network. 
 
Although Slim's business interests range across sectors like telecommunications, education, healthcare, industrial manufacturing, food &amp; beverages, real estate, airlines, media, mining, oil, hospitality, entertainment, technology, retail, sports and financial services, the bedrock of his fortune is telecom. 
 
When ET contacted over email, an America Movil spokeswoman said, "We do not have any comments at this time on Mr Slim's visit to India." ET had sought details about Slim's visit, his meetings with heads of Indian telecom operators and American Movil's India plans. 
 Meanwhile, a top Videocon group executive said that large international telcos looking towards India for growth had evinced an interest to make strategic investments in <keyword id="262458" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Videocon-Telecom">Videocon Telecom</keyword>. 
 
But he declined to elaborate on ET's query regarding Slim's meeting with the Videocon Group chairman. 
 
In January this year, Dhoot had told ET that Videocon's telecom unit had received feelers from a Mexican company as well as an Indian telecom player looking to buy a 49% stake. 
 
Industry executives told the financial daily Slim also met senior officials of a Mumbai-based telecom company and Bharti Airtel. 
 
 
However, an Airtel spokesperson denied the development and rejected the notion that there had been any talk of a likely investment. "We strongly deny these speculations which are completely incorrect, baseless and without an iota of truth," the spokesperson told ET.

Another fact that caught our eye is that in 2013 alone, the world added 200 more billionaires. Three co-founders of <keyword id="6354576" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Facebook">Facebook</keyword> are the youngest billionaires in the world. Now, with the Facebook’s acquisition of <keyword id="790242" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="WhatsApp">Whatsapp</keyword>, the popular messaging apps owner <keyword id="1983269" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Jan-Koum">Jan Koum</keyword> will also join the list of people worth a lot of money. 
 The list of billionaires has 138 females in it. This shows that <keyword id="624" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Women">women</keyword> can do just as good as the men do in the world of money and commerce. Also, fashion, retail and investments have the most number of billionaires. Coming to think of it, the elite list of billionaires is not looking so elite with so many people joining the list lately.

The only gainers were Adani Enterprises, Ambuja Cements, and ACC. In response to the allegations, Adani Group on January 29 gave a lengthy response to the allegations saying that it is in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. “We are committed to the highest levels of governance to protect the interests of all our stakeholders," a statement said. The report also impacted the company’s plans to raise funds by issuing new shares of Adani Enterprises via a follow-on public offer (FPO). The FPO is the largest in India Inc’s history, and the company has raised ₹5,985 crore from anchor investors. However, the FPO has been subscribed just 20% so far as at 11:42 am on the last day of the subscription process. On the second day, it was subscribed by just 2%. <a href="http://www.forbes.com/powerful-people/list/#tab:overall" target="_blank">Forbes has just declared</a> Russian President Vladimir Putin to be the most powerful person on Earth.


	"As the undisputed, unpredictable, and unaccountable head of an energy-rich, nuclear-tipped state, no one would ever call him weak," <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/carolinehoward/2014/11/05/putin-vs-obama-the-worlds-most-powerful-people-2014/">writes Forbes Senior Editor Caroline Howard</a>.

	For the second year in row, Putin edges out US President Barack Obama for the top spot.
 With the exception of Pope Francis, the top six people are all in <keyword id="6358883" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Politics">politics</keyword>.

	The business world cracks the top 10 in the form of Google cofounders Sergey Brin and Larry Page, who are tied at No. 9.

	At only 30 years old, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is the youngest person on the list, while the 90-year-old king of Saudi Arabia, Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, is the oldest.

	Newcomers include Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Alibaba CEO Jack Ma.

<keyword id="21718" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Asia">Asia</keyword> has more <keyword id="6393637" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="billionaires">billionaires</keyword> than any other continent, a survey by a China-based wealth magazine showed on Thursday, apparently overtaking North America for the first time.
There were 1,453 people around the world with a personal wealth of $1 billion or more as of January, said the Hurun Report, a luxury magazine publisher that compiled the list.
Asia had 608 billionaires, North America 440 and Europe 324, it said in a statement.
It is believed to be the first time Asia has been named as home of the largest proportion of super-rich on any global list.
US business magazine Forbes said in its most recent international rich list, published in March last year, that the Asia-Pacific region had 315 billionaires, compared to 450 from North America and 310 in Europe.
Among individual countries, the United States and <keyword id="1334" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="China">China</keyword> dominated the Hurun list, with 408 and 317 billionaires respectively, followed by Russia, Germany and India.
Mexican telecoms czar Carlos Slim, 73, was ranked as the "Richest Man on the Planet" with a personal fortune of $66 billion. Slim also topped last year's Forbes global list.
US investor Warren Buffett and Amancio Ortega of Spain, founder of fashion brand Zara, were second and third in the Hurun Report rankings, with a net worth of $58 billion and $55 billion respectively.
Hong Kong investor Li Ka-shing kept his title of Asia's richest man with $32 billion, the seventh wealthiest person in the world.
"In China we've seen a huge urbanisation boom and that has created a lot of wealth in property," Rupert Hoogewerf, chairman and chief researcher of the Hurun Report, told <keyword id="68053" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="AFP">AFP</keyword>.
Zong Qinghou, who heads soft-drink producer Wahaha, and Wang Jianlin of property developer Wanda were the only two from mainland China to make it into the top 100.

The Hurun Report estimated the total wealth of the world's dollar billionaires at $5.5 trillion, roughly the size of the Japanese economy last year.
"This past year has seen a rebound in the wealth of the private sector," it said, adding the net assets of the 10 richest people on the list rose 22 percent over the year, or $250 million a day.
Real estate, telecommunications, media and technology and retail were the most common sources of wealth, it added.
Moscow has more billionaires than any other city in the world with 76, it said, edging out New York, Hong Kong, Beijing and London.
Hoogewerf said the true number of billionaires in the world could be three times higher as some super-rich hid their worth.
"Some people deliberately make their wealth a secret because... they gained it through illegal ways," he told reporters at a press conference. "Some others simply prefer to keep a low profile."
Hoogewerf, an accountant by training, previously compiled the Forbes rich list.
He said the survey methods included examining public information such as stock market reports, scouring artwork purchase records and tracking down philanthropical activities.
