Heart problems among Indians have almost doubled in the last decade and it is now afflicting the young too, say doctors and experts. Doctors across the globe have also reported a spurt in cardiovascular problems related to Covid-19 throughout the pandemic. Data from England’s health-care system, for example, shows that people who had been hospitalised with Covid-19 were about three times more likely than uninfected people to face major cardiovascular problems within eight months of their hospitalisation. Last week, comedian-actor Raju Srivastav succumbed to a heart attack. He was 58 years old. In May, noted singer KK died due to cardiac arrest after singing at a concert in Kolkata. He was 53 years old. This is a list that is growing and is shockingly long. The most affected are people from industries that are generally considered high-stress inducing such as the entertainment sector. Last year, actors Sidharth Shukla (40 years old) and Puneeth Rajkumar (46 years) died of heart attacks while Amit Mistry (47 years) died due to cardiac arrest. According to the <keyword id="6356311" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="world-health-organisation" source="Orion">World Health Organisation</keyword>, India accounts for at least <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6994761/">one-fifth</a> of the 17.9 million cardiovascular disease-related deaths globally, especially in the younger generation. Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a group of disorders of the heart and blood vessels, including coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, peripheral arterial disease, rheumatic heart disease, congenital heart disease, deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Men, reportedly, have been more prone to these heart problems compared to women. According to the Indian Heart Association, 50% of all heart attacks in Indian men occur under the age of 50, while 25% of all heart attacks in Indian men occur under 40 years of age. The prevalence of cardiovascular diseases is high even among people who are slightly older than 45 years. In 2016, India reported 63% of total deaths due to non-communicable diseases, of which 27% were attributed to CVDs, according to a WHO report. The survey has found 10-15% rise in cardiac diseases in the 20-40 age group while 54% of the 600 cardiologists interviewed, observe 16-20% overall growth in <keyword id="76316" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="cardiovascular-diseases">cardiovascular diseases</keyword> among women over the past five years. It seems women’s regular hormone shields are down due to a negative lifestyle, <keyword id="23666" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="stress">stress</keyword> and work-life imbalance. Worse still, 83% of the doctors surveyed believe that Indian women are not aware of CVD; 76% observe that women die of heart conditions as they come to the hospital too late and 66% say that CVD deaths among women happen due to late diagnosis.

Want to boost your heart health? Eating a handful of nuts and seeds can help you reduce the risk of heart disease by 25 per cent, according to a new study. The study showed nuts lower cholesterol levels and are linked to a lower risk of cardio-vascular disease. By eating nuts, you reduce your risk of suffering or dying from a heart attack. One of the reasons is the composition of fatty acids in nuts, the researchers said. "Even though nuts cannot be used to treat high cholesterol, we believe that the effect is significant enough to be used as a preventive measure amongst the general population," <keyword id="16900962" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="erik-arnesen" source="Orion">Erik Arnesen</keyword>, research fellow at the <keyword id="292059" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="university-of-oslo" source="Orion">University of Oslo</keyword> said. Researchers from the University of Oslo in Norway and the <keyword id="194892" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="karolinska-institute" source="Orion">Karolinska Institute</keyword> in Sweden conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of 60 previous studies. "If you eat a handful of nuts every day, that is around 30 grams, you will have a 20 to 25 per cent lower risk of suffering from cardiovascular disease. Many people do not eat nuts or seeds at all," <keyword id="567998" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="arnesen" source="Orion">Arnesen</keyword> said, in the paper published in the journal Food &amp; Nutrition Research. Arnesen emphasised that even though scientists say "the more the better", eating just a few nuts is better than none at all. Almonds, pistachios and walnuts appear to be the best for lowering cholesterol, but according to Arnesen there is so far no conclusive evidence for recommending specific kinds of nuts over and above others. "Nuts have a beneficial effect on cholesterol levels in the blood, which is important to keep low in order to prevent the build-up of fat in the arteries. This atherosclerosis, as it is called, is one of the greatest risk factors for heart attacks," he explained. However, the researchers were uncertain whether eating nuts reduces the risk of strokes and diabetes Type 2. "We are not sure about this. Nuts do not appear to affect blood pressure, which is one of the risk factors behind strokes. We cannot be sure whether nuts are good for blood sugar levels either, which are linked to the risk of diabetes Type 2," Arnesen said. Eating handful of nuts & seeds daily can lower heart risk by 25%

New Delhi, May 22 () A revised government advisory on Friday recommended use of hydroxychloroquine as a preventive medication for asymptomatic healthcare workers working in non-COVID-19 hospitals, frontline staff on surveillance duty in containment zones and paramilitary/police personnel involved in coronavirus infection related activities. As was mentioned in the earlier advisory, the drug against the infection is also recommended for all asymptomatic healthcare workers involved in containment and treatment of COVID-19 and household contacts of laboratory confirmed cases. The revised advisory issued by the ICMR, however, cautioned that the intake of the medicine should not instill a sense of false security. The recommendation was made after the Joint Monitoring Group under the Chairmanship of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) and including representatives from AIIMS, ICMR, National Centre for Disease Control, National Disaster Management Authority, WHO and experts drawn from central government hospitals reviewed the prophylactic use of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) in the context of expanding it to healthcare and other frontline workers deployed in non-COVID-19 and COVID-19 areas. Three new categories ---all asymptomatic healthcare workers working in non-COVID hospitals/areas of COVID hospitals/blocks, asymptomatic frontline workers such as surveillance workers deployed in containment zones and paramilitary/police personnel involved in COVID-19 related activities ---have now been included. According to the revised advisory, "at NIV, Pune, the report of the in-vitro testing of HCQ for antiviral efficacy showed reduction of infectivity and log reduction in viral RNA copy of SARs-CoV2". "The drug is contraindicated in persons with known case of retinopathy, hypersensitivity to HCQ and cardiac rhythm disorders," it said. The drug is not recommended for prophylaxis in children under 15 years of age and in pregnancy and lactation, the advisory said. Rarely the drug causes cardiovascular side effects such as cardiomyopathy and rhythm (heart rate) disorders, it said. "In that situation the drug needs to be discontinued. The drug can rarely cause visual disturbance including blurring of vision which is usually self-limiting and improves on discontinuation of the drug," the revised advisory said. The drug has to be given under strict medical supervision with an informed consent, it stated. The National Task force (NTF) for COVID-19 constituted by the ICMR reviewed the use of HCQ for prophylaxis of SARS-CoV-2 infection for high risk population based on the emerging evidence on its safety and efficacy. The data on assessment of HCQ prophylaxis among 1,323 healthcare workers indicated mild adverse effects such as nausea (8.9 per cent), abdominal pain (7.3 per cent), vomiting (1.5 per cent), hypoglycemia (1.7 per cent) and cardio-vascular effects (1.9 per cent), the advisory said. However, as per the data from the Pharma covigilance programme of India, there have been 214 reported instances of adverse drug reactions associated with prophylactic HCQ use, it said. Of these, seven were serious individual case safety reports with prolongation of QT interval on ECG in three cases, it added. Highlighting the studies on prophylaxis of SARS-CoV-2 infection, the advisory stated that a retrospective case-control analysis at ICMR has found that there is a significant dose-response relationship between the number of prophylactic doses taken and frequency of occurrence of SARSCoV-2 infection in symptomatic healthcare workers who were tested for coronavirus infection. Another investigation from three central government hospitals in New Delhi indicates that amongst healthcare workers involved in COVID-19 care, those on HCQ prophylaxis were less likely to develop SARS-CoV-2 infection, compared to those who were not on it. The benefit was less pronounced in healthcare workers caring for a general patient population. Besides, an observational prospective study of 334 healthcare workers at AIIMS, out of which 248 took HCQ prophylaxis in New Delhi also showed that those taking HCQ prophylaxis had lower incidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection than those not taking it. According to the advisory, the drug has to be given only on the prescription of a registered medical practitioner and it is advised to consult with a physician for any adverse event or potential drug interaction before initiation of medication, it said. Front line workers should use PPEs in accordance with the guidelines issued by the health ministry and they should be advised to consult their physician (within their hospital/surveillance team/security organisation) for any adverse event or potential drug interaction before initiation of medication, the advisory said. If anyone becomes symptomatic while on prophylaxis, he/she should immediately contact the health facility, get tested as per national guidelines and follow the standard treatment protocol, it said. Apart from the symptoms of COVID-19 (fever, cough, breathing difficulty), if the person on chemoprophylaxis develops any other symptoms, he should immediately seek medical treatment from the prescribing medical practitioner, it said. All asymptomatic contacts of laboratory confirmed cases should remain in home quarantine as per the national guidelines, even if they are on prophylactic therapy, the advisory added. ASK/PLB SRY

HIIT can help you burn more calories</h2>While you're doing a HIIT workout, you're burning about the same amount of calories as you would during a typical workout like running. However, you burn more calories after a HIIT workout than you do during a steady-state cardio exercise like running, where your heart rate remains relatively stable. HIIT may help you lose weight</h2>Since HIIT burns more calories because of EPOC, it can be a more convenient way to help you lose weight, since you don't have to spend as much time working out. A <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30765340/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2019 review</a> analyzed 77 scientific studies. The review found that people who did HIIT workouts lost 28.5% more fat than people who did moderately-intense continuous exercise, like running. HIIT builds many muscle groups </h2>Most HIIT workouts involve many different movements. This was measured by tracking levels of <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/neuroscience/irisin" target="_blank" rel="noopener">irisin</a>, a hormone released by the muscles in response to exercise. <h2>4. Meet Dr. Anand Subramanium, a Cardio Thoracic &amp; Vascular Surgeon at Apollo Hospitals, Sheshadripuram in Bangalore and Dr. Sonal Asthana, Multiorgan Transplant Surgeon with work experience in leading centers in North America, UK and India. 
 
These doctors have led their teams to not only treat their patients, but even raise money for them at times when families have been unable to pay for the treatment of their children who need immediate surgeries or transplant. 
 These doctors have taken to online <keyword id="990338" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="crowdfunding">crowdfunding</keyword> website <keyword id="6734688" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Milaap">Milaap</keyword> to spread awareness about critical cases and the financial help they need. Surprisingly, their requests have actually led to money flowing in. On being asked how did they think of using a crowdfunding website, Asthana narrated us a rather insightful story. 
 He told Business Insider – “One of the earliest transplants my team was a part of in India was that of a 7-year-old girl who had come to our hospital with acute liver failure. She required urgent transplant. Her father was a factory worker who earned Rs 7,000 a month. We managed to get organs for the <keyword id="6428947" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="liver-transplant">liver transplant</keyword> but her parents did not have the money for transplant. We had to then raise finds through public appeal and through charitable organizations. Luckily, we were able to pay for her transplant and post transplant care.” 
 
That’s when he felt several others would be facing similar problems in the country. His team then learnt of <a href="https://milaap.org/fundraisers/thanmay">Thanmay’s case – a 16-month-old son of a taxi driver who was suffering from a tumor in his liver and needed urgent liver transplant</a>. 
 
“By the time Thanmay’s case came to us, we learnt about the potential of crowd-funding. We had the target of raising Rs 15 lakh, and we managed to raise the entire amount in just 7 days through Milaap,” said Asthana. 
 
When Asthana’s team was trying to raise money for Thanmay, they were also able to bring down the cost of the transplant (Rs 25 lakh usually) to Rs 15 lakh by requesting the hospital management to consider concession for the boy’s family. 
 
“Because we had already raised Rs 15 lakh, and Thanmay’s surgery eventually costed us Rs 13.5 lakh, we are using the remaining money to take care of his post transplant care,” he said. 
 
Why Asthana feels crowdfunding is really helpful in India is because – “Liver transplant costs $3,00,000 in the US. Healthcare is already cheap in India if you compare it with international standards. Even then, there are people who cannot afford the treatment. Our job doesn’t stop at telling them about the treatment, but we also have to look at ways we can help them to pay for the transplant. That’s where crowdfunding is very helpful. We have raised money for 6 children since last November.”

The second kid is 8-month-old Piyush, a street vendor’s son, who suffers from congenital cyanotic heart disease and needs urgent corrective surgery. 
 
Good news is in both cases, Subramanium seems to be going strong because he has already raised <a href="https://milaap.org/fundraisers/waris">Rs 1,60,000 for Waris</a> (out of Rs 1,90,600) and <a href="https://milaap.org/fundraisers/piyush">Rs 1,60,000 (out of Rs 2,26,162) for Piyush</a>. 
 
It’s difficult to believe there are such noble doctors in our country who are reaching out to people for helping their patients.
