Once you have shared your details, like the amount of water you consume per month, it gives you a score of between 0 to 10 — your carbon footprint. This is the amount of carbon dioxide you are likely to have released into the atmosphere as a result of your activities. While one can understand the appeal of self-assessment, there are limitations within the app that could misrepresent your actual carbon score. How does the CarbonWatch mobile application work? You can download CarbonWatch from the Google Play Store. After reaching out to Sparrow Analytics, the mobile app publisher, we were informed that it was a ‘server issue’ which was fixed shortly after. Also, the function of providing your mobile number if the one-time password (OTP) will be sent on the email ID seems redundant. Users should have the option of providing one or the other. Necessitating both seems like an unnecessary load on data collection. The <keyword id="10824384" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="limitations-of-carbonwatch">limitations of CarbonWatch</keyword> While obviously helping a person gauge their carbon footprint and how their activities affect the environment around them, the CarbonWatch mobile app is not the most user-friendly — not in terms of the user interface, but the calculations. For instance, the carbon footprint score does not change even when you adjust the number of family members in a single household. This means the details of water consumption, electricity use, and gas consumption are not averaged out. The overall score is not for an individual, but the entire household. The app also only shows the latest recorded emission score. There is no historical data or a way to keep track of whether your emission score has gone up or down if you’ve changed the input values. Comparative charts and the ability to export data would go a long way in helping people track their progress. <div type="image" title="carbonwatch (1)" msid="81203730" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;CarbonWatch only displays the most recently recorded carbon emission score&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> For instance, your electricity and water consumption is likely to be higher during the summer than during the winter months — but there is no way for me, as an individual, to track that change and the resulting effect on my carbon footprint within the app. The app also does not let you take screenshots. This means the only way for you to track the changes in your carbon footprint is to note down the score manually or take pictures using secondary devices. Now, about the actual inputs. CarbonWatch asks users for their average units of freshwater billed per month in kilolitres. That means you need to have your utility bill on hand. There are no comparative guidelines on how you may be able to gauge your consumption based on how many buckets of water you use per month. The reason this is important is because not everyone rents an entire house, especially students or bachelors. They usually have a single room or only a part of the house for use. Hence, they may not necessarily have access to the utility bill. And, even if they do have access to it, the entire consumption of water does not rest on their shoulders. The same applies to the consumption of electricity. It would be easier if the app asked users what kind of lights they use (LED, CFL or other ordinary bulbs), how many are in the room or house, and how many hours, on average, they are switched on for. And, while it is useful to ask whether or not a user is segregating their waste, the app doesn’t ask for an estimate of how much waste is being produced in the first place. A score of 6.61 fairly high. And, the only basis of comparison is worldwide averages. In our case, it was much higher than India’s average of 1.81 or even the global average of 4.74 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. <div type="image" title="carbonwatch" msid="81203744" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Carbon footprint score is only compared to global averages&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> While helpful, it would be better if the consumption could be compared according to the locality you live in. It would help you gauge if others in your area have a similar carbon footprint or not. If not, it would be more insightful to know what other households are doing differently than have general guidelines thrown up on the screen. CarbonWatch — India’s first mobile app to calculate your carbon footprint falls short of its promises

<ul><li><keyword id="866223" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kavin-Mittal">Kavin Mittal</keyword> talks about launch of <keyword id="44033" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="hike">Hike</keyword>’s two new products – <keyword id="791265" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="vibe">Vibe</keyword>, an exclusive social platform and <keyword id="37572" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="rush">Rush</keyword>, a gaming platform⁠.</li><li>Hike made headlines in the beginning of 2021, as Mittal took to Twitter to announce the shutting down of Hike Messenger.</li><li>While keen to revive Hike back to its glory days, Mittal says he is being careful not to repeat the mistakes.</li></ul>Kavin Mittal, son of one of India’s richest business tycoons, is a man who has waged his own battles. He got wounded, but it seems like he is not afraid to show the scars. His messaging service Hike Messenger — was shut down, early this year. Hike Messenger, which was supposed to take on US-based competitor Whatsapp in India, was founded in 2012. The startup showed promise, quickly got the attention of investors — including Chinese messaging giant WeChat’s parent — and was valued at 1 billion dollars within four years of launch. But Mittal is not done yet. On a sultry afternoon, at a posh Gurugram restaurant, Mittal sat down with Business Insider. He wanted to chat about the launch of his two new products – Vibe, an exclusive social platform and Rush, a gaming platform⁠ — as well as his fundraising plans. During the conversation, he opened up about the mistakes of the past. “We are not living in a hope bubble, we are good at confronting the brutal facts of reality. Hike is where it is, we deal with it,” he said. Shutting down Hike Messenger was a tough but important decision Hike made headlines in the beginning of 2021, as Mittal <a href="https://twitter.com/kavinbm/status/1346680111181885440">took to Twitter</a> to announce the shutting down of Hike Messenger. A recent news report said that Hike was<a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-02-17/india-startup-crushed-by-whatsapp-now-wants-to-take-on-facebook"> trying to take on Facebook. </a> “Why would we leave the messaging space and then go after a product like Facebook?,” Mittal asked. While he did complain about the headline, he was definitely a lot less fragile than he used to be. Hike in late 2016 boasted having 37 million monthly active users (MAU) and 18 million daily active users (DAU). But Mittal’s homegrown messaging app was no match for the likes of WhatsApp that has taken India by storm in recent years. “Running a messaging app is also not cheap, and if we aren’t going to be in the top two of a business segment, we are not going to keep it around,” Mittal said. So, what went wrong with the Messenger? Mittal admits today that they made a couple of bad hiring mistakes which cost them dearly. “We should have adapted to the market, we couldn’t. That was the key reason. There was a period in which we went from 150 people to 400 very fast,” he said. “We had built a phenomenal culture at Hike until 150 people. But we were going too fast and when you make hiring mistakes at the top, it all comes tumbling down," he said. Hike laid off hundreds of people in 2018 and today, Mittal has his own ‘code’ for hiring, which he says is the “operating Bible”. <div type="image" title="hike" msid="81206552" hostid="261"></div> Shutting down the messenger was only half the process Finding alternative revenue streams was important for Hike to survive. With the gaming platform Rush, Hike is taking on one of its own investments, Winzo, a real money casual gaming platform. “It’s our version of what we believe hyper casual gaming should be. A new entertainment service, we are bringing those old-school gaming arcades online,” he said. With the other product, Vibe, he’s building a social platform with a friendship and dating angle, where people are matched on the platform. But they are also screening people to keep the ‘sleaze bags’ away. “We are building a new kind of place, but a safe place to hang out online, for an India that is still very culturally shy and conservative. Vibe is an approval only community,” he said. At the centre of Vibe, is the famous HikeMoji for people to create their own avatars and not necessarily, have to share their own photos until they know someone they can talk to. Learning from the mistakes of the past While keen to revive Hike back to its glory days, Mittal says he is being careful not to repeat the mistakes. His perception of scale has changed. “In India, if you have 10 million customers paying you a dollar a month, that’s an exciting business. Even a 5% of the market is over 25 million customers,” he said. And so has his idea of speed. “We have 30,000 people being matched every month, and that’s just through word of mouth,” he added while speaking about Vibe. Hike was one of the fastest unicorns in 2020, with the backing of Tencent, Tiger Global and Bharti SoftBank (a joint venture then between Bharti Airtel and Japanese investment firm SoftBank). <table they will announce new funding details this year. “We built a billion dollar company when the market was small. The market is now 600 million people, imagine what we can do,” he said. “Emotionally we have moved on, it’s a part of building a new company. Jadhav wrote that Raise will offer ‘technology-led consumer products &amp; infrastructure services to serve Indians with financial services (across financing, insurance, investments, payments and wealth).’ The startup has raised investments from Mirae Asset Venture Investments, which is an India-focussed fund launched by South Korean firm Mirae in January 2021. Raise is their first investment through the fund.
