With the West Bengal Assembly bypolls around the corner, a recent analysis by the West Bengal Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) has shed light on the profiles of candidates in the fray. The study reveals that among the 41 candidates contesting in the upcoming bypolls, seven have serious criminal cases pending, while another seven are crorepatis. <h2>Criminal cases: BJP tops the list</h2>The ADR analysis shows that out of the seven candidates with serious criminal cases, four are from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), two from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), and one from Congress. These cases range from non-bailable offences to electoral violations and financial fraud, with maximum punishments extending to five years or more. Offences in this category include serious crimes such as murder, kidnapping, and violations of the Prevention of Corruption Act or crimes against women. The bypolls will take place on November 13 in the constituencies of Coochbehar Sitai (SC), Haroa, Naihati, Medinipur, Taldangra, and Madarihat (ST). However, the affidavit for one candidate, independent contestant Pankaj Lohra from Madarihat (ST), could not be reviewed due to missing documents. <h2>Wealthiest candidates</h2>In addition to those with criminal cases, seven candidates declared assets exceeding Rs 1 crore. Congress leads in this regard, with three crorepati candidates, followed by the BJP with two, and the TMC and CPIM(L) with one each. According to the affidavits, the wealthiest candidate is TMC's <keyword id="23849799" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sanat-dey" source="keywords">Sanat Dey</keyword> from Naihati, who has assets worth Rs 4.9 crore, including Rs 1.8 crore in immovable property. Following him is BJP's Ananya Roy Chakraborty, who is contesting from Taldangra, with assets totalling nearly Rs 3 crore. TMC’s Shyamal Kumar Ghosh, running for the Medinipur seat, declared assets of approximately Rs 1.69 crore. On average, the candidates’ assets are valued at around Rs 58.14 lakh. In contrast to the wealthiest candidates, Kashikanta Barman from the Kamatapur Peoples Party (United), contesting from Coochbehar Sitai (SC), has declared the lowest assets, amounting to just Rs 5,000. While these buzzwords sound appealing, they may actually attract the wrong kind of candidates—those that display narcissistic tendencies and are more likely to bend the rules than follow them! A forthcoming study in Management Science, available on the SSRN server, has found that such enticing keywords signify that firms are searching for “rule benders” rather than “rule followers”. Ultimately, this language ends up disproportionately attracting narcissistic applicants, who are more prone to unethical or fraudulent behaviour. For this study, Nick Seybert, Associate Professor of Accounting at UMD's Robert H. Smith School of Business, along with co-authors Scott Jackson from the University of South Carolina and Jonathan Gay from the University of Mississippi, zeroed in on the accounting field. They chose this sector because narcissists and rule benders in this area can have an immediate and damaging impact. The study involved testing online participants (college graduates recruited via a research crowdsourcing platform) for narcissism levels and their attraction to rule-bender terms in <keyword id="22374125" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="job-descriptions" source="keywords">job descriptions</keyword>. A similar study was conducted with experienced accounting managers, and factors influencing professional <keyword id="22374122" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="recruiters-language-choices" source="keywords">recruiters' language choices</keyword> were also examined. The findings revealed that narcissists are more drawn to <keyword id="22374121" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rule-bender-language" source="keywords">rule-bender language</keyword> in <keyword id="21494790" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="job-postings" source="keywords">job postings</keyword>, both for general positions and specifically for accounting roles. Seybert explains that even before a single job seeker clicks 'apply,' the language in a job posting can be too tempting for narcissists to ignore, increasing the likelihood of attracting unethical candidates. While recruiters often consume advice on how to avoid hiring narcissists, they unwittingly attract them by using such language in job postings, Seybert notes. Furthermore, the intent behind the recruiters’ language choice can be irrelevant—such job descriptions can even unintentionally attract rule-bending narcissists to firms. Additionally, the research shows that <keyword id="22374126" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="professional-recruiters" source="keywords">professional recruiters</keyword> are more likely to use such rule-bender language in job postings for innovative, high-growth companies, as well as firms that might benefit from manipulating their earnings. The <keyword id="19895782" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Election-Commission" source="keywords">Election Commission</keyword> has received eight applications from aggrieved <keyword id="19902220" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="candidates" source="keywords">candidates</keyword>, including those from the <keyword id="19894848" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BJP" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="BJP" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="BJP">BJP</keyword> and the <keyword id="19895371" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Congress" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Congress" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="Congress">Congress</keyword>, for verification of tampering or modification in micro-controller chips embedded in the EVMs post declaration of Lok Sabha election results on June 4. Terming the suspicion of manipulation of the electronic voting machines "unfounded", the <keyword id="19895345" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Supreme-Court" source="keywords">Supreme Court</keyword> had on April 26 rejected the demand for reverting to the old paper ballot system. But at the same time, the top court had opened a window for the aggrieved unsuccessful candidates securing second and third places in the poll results and allowed them to seek verification of micro-controller chips embedded in five per cent EVMs per assembly constituency on a written request upon the payment of a fee to the poll panel. BJP's Ahmednagar (Maharashtra) candidate Sujay Vikhe-Patil has sought verification of the machines from 40 <keyword id="20300567" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="polling-stations" source="keywords">polling stations</keyword>. Vikhe-Patil had lost to Nilesh Lanke of NCP (Sharad Pawar) faction. A YSRCP and a DMDK candidate too have applied for the verification, according to data shared by the poll panel. According to the EC, eight parliamentary seats spread across six states are involved. The total number of polling stations for which verification has been sought is 92. Candidates who come second or third and seek verification of the EVMs will have to pay Rs 47,200 per EVM set, according to the standard operating procedure issued by the EC on June 1. According to the EC's Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), the cost submitted by manufacturers BEL and ECIL to carry out EVM "check and verification" is Rs 40,000 (plus 18 per cent GST) per set of EVM. "In addition to the cost incurred by the manufacturers, there are also administrative costs like cost of labour to shift the units, CCTV coverage, electricity charges, videography costs and various other operational costs at the district election officer level," the document said. It, however, said to make the <keyword id="21143428" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="verification-process" source="keywords">verification process</keyword> "more accessible" and inclusive in compliance to the referred mandate of the Supreme Court, it is decided that instead of going purely by the actual economic costs incurred, the administrative expenditure on <keyword id="22122362" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="EVM-verification" source="keywords">EVM verification</keyword> will be treated as "election expenditure and borne by the central or state government, as the case may be". "Accordingly, the administrative charges will be waived for the applicants -- the same shall not be charged to the applicants," it noted. The charges for EVM verification to be paid by the applicant candidate is for the current financial year 2024-25 -- till March 31, 2025, it said. An EVM set has at least one Ballot Unit, one Control Unit and a <keyword id="19975285" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vvpat" source="keywords">VVPAT</keyword> machine. Separately, YSRCP and BJD candidates from Andhra Pradesh and Odisha respectively have also applied for EVM check following the announcement of assembly results on June 4. Assembly polls in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh were held along with the Lok Sabha elections. In the verification exercise for assembly poll results, total assembly constituencies involved are three where verification has been sought in 26 polling stations. According to the SOP, the concerned state chief electoral officer (CEO) was required to communicate to the manufacturers the consolidated list of applicants within 30 days of the date of declaration of results -- by July 4. The CEOs have already conveyed the same to the manufacturers 15 days ahead of the schedule, the EC said. The technical SOP enumerating the methodology and steps for checking and verification of burnt memory/ micro-controller of the EVM units will be issued by the EC in due course.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Landing a job in venture capital is notoriously difficult because it's so competitive.</li><li>Emma Halls, a Stem7 Executive Search recruiter, shares what VC firms are looking for in candidates.</li></ul>This as-told-to essay is based on a transcribed conversation with Emma Halls, a director at Stem7 Executive Search, a recruitment firm for the financial services industry. Business Insider has verified her employment. The following has been edited for length and clarity.Venture capital is one of the hardest sectors to get into because it's so competitive.As a recruiter for Stem7 Executive Search, I specialize in placing candidates in venture capital and private equity, particularly in early-stage investment firms. We work with VC firms in London, Palo Alto, Paris, Berlin, Stockholm, Munich, and New York. For junior roles, our clients prefer candidates with a background in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cfa-exam-age-dropping-more-college-students-finance-internships-resume-2024-7">investment banking</a> or management <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/consulting-firms-mckinsey-bcg-accenture-workers-leaving-2024-9">consulting</a>. But that alone is not enough to land a job in VC. It's beneficial if someone has work experience in technology or startups. But they're also looking for candidates whose CVs show they're actually passionate about the whole VC ecosystem. It's not enough to just say you're passionate on your CV — you need to showcase this through your experience.<h2 id="a5921397-b7d7-4bbe-9074-237fd5ad561f">VC firms look for networkers and disruptors </h2>This could be through their education; candidates might have done a science or engineering degree and shown they're curious about how things work. It could be through starting an initiative themselves, such as a university society, or building an app with friends. This shows VC firms that the candidates were always doing things that created some kind of disruption.One thing we tell candidates is that they're entering a highly-networked industry. VC firms want to know if applicants have been able to network themselves into some kind of startup role or internship. Have they reached out to people in the ecosystem to build contacts? Have they entered any competitions at university related to startups or business? These things will show a venture capital fund that's hiring that this person's got something extra about them.A key quality our clients look for is the ability to build interpersonal relationships. Have applicants been able to communicate with people and build relationships? Not just talk to people but actually build relationships, which means keeping in touch with that person consistently. The other trait they look out for is emotional intelligence, which comes out more in interviews.<h2 id="f0c2a601-5e0a-49bc-b1ec-c129ec13c50f">Nailing the interview</h2>Before candidates get to the interview stage, they need to look at what this specific fund does and the industries it operates in. What areas and companies are these particular venture capital funds investing in? What stage of investment are they looking at?There's no point applying to a biotech firm and saying they're really interested in AI. Usually, the process would be that if they get to the interview stage, they will then be asked to talk through their background. They'd be asked questions like, "If you were going to invest in any market at the moment, what would that be?"<div type="image" title="Emma Halls" height="750" width="1050" msid="115087248" hostid="261" sizebytes="18462"></div>There are some hot markets out there that our clients are quite interested in candidates having experience in. This includes, but is not limited to, artificial intelligence, biotech and healthtech, climate tech, and financial services.So, if candidates come to an interview, the person interviewing them will want to know, "What are the investments that we do within our portfolio? Which one do they like? Which one would they invest in and why? Which one would they back to do really well?" They want to know that the candidate has done a lot of research on their portfolio before they go into the firm.<h2 id="ccde81f1-f933-4a62-88f8-e954c7eb9dac">Candidates without a finance background can stand out</h2>Over the last five years, we've seen <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/landed-vc-job-varied-resume-diverse-experience-resume-2024-8">many different routes</a> into venture capital. People have networked in these areas, and we would advise candidates to absorb all the information available to them via podcasts and social media. That will help candidates learn more about the areas, but they will also know themselves if they have that real passion and curiosity that will set them apart.Also, for more niche funds, such as biotech and health, we've seen doctors and people with a background in life sciences apply to those areas.<h2 id="82da002c-bffb-4e45-97b3-8250d61f3968">Share what podcasts you listen to </h2>One of the common mistakes candidates make is not listing enough on their CV about all the things they have done that make them stand out. They should ensure they've listed everything they've done at university, what they're doing outside work, all the research they've done, and even what podcasts they listen to.Candidates often forget they need to showcase why they think they will be good for the firm. So rather than saying, "I want to have a chance to come and join your firm because your firm is really exciting," what they should be writing about is, "I would really like to have the opportunity to interview with you because I think I could contribute in these ways."<h2 id="3dc1814e-9702-4ae3-8680-af360d213601">Avoid lengthy cover letters </h2>Often, a candidate might write a very, very long cover letter, and essentially, that is not needed. They might trip themselves up unknowingly. Our advice for candidates is that it's fine to write a few sentences on why specifically they would like to join that organization and why they really like the company's portfolio. They should outline why they feel that the skills they have are in line with what the company looks for at that level.If I look at why our candidates get turned down from actual interviews, it's often because they don't exemplify that they have certain soft skills. Can they communicate? It's very easy for candidates to be consumed by their phones instead of talking to people face to face — which will come out in interviews if they don't have those coveted communication skills.

Aiming to build recall of people, Dev was seen sporting a garland of 7 slippers around his neck during his campaign. Lok Sabha polls will be held in seven phases beginning April 19. Uttar Pradesh, which sends the maximum number of MPs, 80, to Parliament, will vote in all seven phases. Voting for phases one and two will be held on April 19 and April 26. Next, the state will once again poll in phases three and four on May 7 and May 13. The Uttar Pradesh electorate will also vote in phases five, six and seven on May 20, May 23 and June 1 respectively. Aligarh will go for polls in the second phase on April 26. The counting of votes will take place on June 4. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP candidate Satish Kumar Gautam won from the Aligarh garnering 656215 votes. BJP defeated BSP Dr. Ajeet Baliyan who got 426954 votes. "No matter what happens in this election, it's going to be the most pro-crypto Congress that we've ever had," Armstrong said in a Wednesday interview with CNBC.He pointed to the ways both Donald Trump and Kamala Harris have courted voters during their presidential campaigns and to the soaring number of congressional candidates who have received pro-crypto scores from Stand With Crypto.The nonprofit, which evaluates candidates based on statements and sentiment regarding crypto legislation, has given A or B scores to 355 candidates running for federal office, Armstrong says.That's a stark contrast from just a few years ago when lawmakers seemed keen on reining the industry in, he says."I feel like the crypto industry was under siege and there was just a handful of folks in DC that were really trying to attack the industry.
