These are the winning candidates in Puducherry assembly election 2021

The Election Commission received nominations from 37 candidates for the single Lok Sabha Constituency in Puducherry, a union territory located within the borders of Tamil Nadu. Out of these papers, 19 were rejected due to several reasons during the scrutiny and the situation finds 18 people trying their luck in the upcoming elections. The top candidates from the union territory are V. Vaithilingam of the Congress, K. Narayanasamy of the AINRC, and M.A.S. Subramanian of Makkal Needhi Maiam. Some of the other candidates include B. Cowri (Naam Tamilar Katchi), K. Ravisankar (Puducherry Development Party) and S. <ul><li>The Ministry of External Affairs every year organises internship opportunities of six months in two terms.</li><li>Due to COVID-19 pandemic, the online application for Term 2 has not opened yet, and the ministry will soon announce the dates.</li><li>The ministry will select 30 interns with a monthly stipend of ₹10,000 per month.</li></ul>The Ministry of External Affairs (<keyword id="6358274" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="MEA" source="Orion">MEA</keyword>) every year organises an internship opportunity for budding scholars to familiarise themselves with the process of formulation of foreign policy and its implementation by the Government of India. The duration of the internship is six months offered in two terms -- Term 1 (January to June) and Term 2 (July to December). Due to COVID-19 pandemic, the online application for Term 2 has not opened yet, and the ministry will soon announce the dates. Interested candidates can keep a check on their <a href="https://www.internship.mea.gov.in/">official website</a>. The ministry will select 30 interns and they shall report to, work under close supervision of the concerned head of division (HOD). They may be required to conduct research, write reports, analyse evolving developments, or carry out any other task entrusted to them by the HOD. All the interns will get a monthly stipend of ₹10,000 per month. Candidates will have to report to the Delhi office during the course of their internship. The ministry will bear the travel cost for outstation candidates who will have to fly to Delhi from their home state. Eligibility criteria for the internship — 1. All the candidates should be an Indian citizen. 2. The maximum age limit for the candidates is 25 years as on December 31, of the year of the internship. 3. Candidates should have a minimum educational qualification of a graduate degree from a recognised university. 4. Candidates belonging to these states are only eligible for the opportunity — Term 1 — Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andaman &amp; Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Delhi. Term 2 — Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Lakshadweep, Puducherry. 5. 30%-50% seats are reserved for women candidates. Candidates nominated to be 'India's first citizen' are required to fork over ₹15,000 as deposit and submit a signed list of 50 proposers and 50 seconders. The President is elected by the members of an electoral college consisting of the elected members from Rajya Sabha (Council of States) and Lok Sabha (the House of the People), as well as the elected members of the Legislative Assemblies of States and the Union Territories of Delhi and Puducherry, according to the Election Commission of India. Each state will get a certain number of votes based on: (a) every elected member of the legislative assembly of a State shall have as many votes as there are multiples of one thousand in the quotient obtained by dividing the population of the state by the total number of elected members of the Assembly; Simply put, here's how state legislators' votes will be calculated: (Total population of the state/No. of legislators in the assembly) / 1,000. And the votes in the Parliament will be counted as such: (Total no of votes assigned to the state legislators/Total No. of Parliamentarians ) (b) If after taking the said multiples of one thousand, the remainder is not less than five hundred, then the vote of each member shall be further increased by one; The winner is the person who gets more votes than a certain quota, which is decided by adding up the votes polled for each candidate, dividing the sum by 2 and adding '1' to the quotient. In case, no one gets more votes than the quota, then the candidate with the lowest number of votes is eliminated. The ballot paper are distributed again for a 'second preference' and this is repeated until one candidate polls above the quota or until there is only candidate left. The winner gets to be the President of the country for five years unless he resigns or is impeached. Is the President eligible for election for a second term? Yes, according to Article 57 of the Constitution, a President is eligible for re-election to that office. Who elects the Vice-President of India? The Vice-President is also elected by the members of an electoral college consisting of members from both Houses of Parliament. The election is in accordance with the system of proportional representation by means of the single transferred vote and the voting is by secret ballot. The ballot paper for electing the Vice President has two columns — one containing the name of the candidate and the second for marking the order of preference. The winning candidate has to get a required quota of votes, which is 50% of the total valid votes plus 1. For instance, if there are 800 valid votes, the one who gets (800/2+1) i.e. 401 votes as the 'first preference' for Vice President will be the winner, and shall hold office for the next five years.

"That is the foremost duty of the Election Commission that we should hold the <keyword id="6355644" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="elections">elections</keyword> and submit the list of the winning candidates (to the governor) before the term of the assembly expires," Chandra told In an interview. He was asked whether the poll panel will be able to hold the assembly polls due in five states on time due to Covid-19 as recently it has deferred some Lok Sabha and assembly bypolls due to the second wave of Covid-19. Some Rajya Sabha bypolls and biennial legislative council elections were also deferred due to the second wave of the pandemic. "As you are aware that the second wave of COVID-19 is also receding and the numbers (of infections) are quite less. We have done elections in Bihar during the pandemic, we have done elections in four states and one UT. We have experience... We have learned various experiences on how to hold polls during the pandemic also," he said. "I am very much sure that with the receding pandemic now, and I wish the pandemic is over soon, we will absolutely be in a position to hold elections next year which are scheduled in five states on time, as per the schedule," Chandra said. While Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur have BJP-led governments, Punjab has a Congress government. Uttar Pradesh, the country's most populous state, has approximately 14.66 crore voters, while Punjab has over 2 crore electors, according to January 1, 2021 data of the Election Commission. Uttarakhand has 78.15 lakh voters while Manipur has 19.58 lakh and Goa has 11.45 lakh electors. The five states together have an estimated 17.84 crore voters. Ahead of the Bihar polls held last year, the EC had taken various steps to ensure a "Covid-free" election such as allowing people above 80 years of age and those suffering from COVID-19 to use postal ballot and reducing the number of voters per polling station from 1500 to 1000 to ensure distancing norms. The number of polling stations had increased by nearly 80,000 in the four states and one Union Territory due to the distancing norms as a lesser number of voters were allowed per polling station. The same principles were adopted in elections to West Bengal, <keyword id="6354915" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="assam">Assam</keyword>, <keyword id="20154" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="tamil-nadu">Tamil Nadu</keyword>, <keyword id="28504" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kerala">Kerala</keyword> and Puducherry. However, after it found that Covid safety norms were being flouted in West Bengal during campaigning, the Election Commission had banned roadshows and vehicle rallies in the state and capped the maximum permissible number of people at public meetings at 500. The decision was taken when the last few phases of polls in West Bengal were still to be held. The EC had said at that time that it was noting "with anguish" that many political parties and candidates were still not adhering to the prescribed safety norms during the public gatherings. The Commission had also banned victory processions during and after counting of votes.
