But instead, I am terrified.<h2>The freedom to live … or die</h2>Just as I am finally able to return to the land of the free, the US feels less free than ever. The Human Rights Campaign said that, as of June this year, <a href="https://www.hrc.org/press-releases/roundup-of-anti-lgbtq-legislation-advancing-in-states-across-the-country" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a record 520 anti-LGBTQ+ bills</a> have been introduced in state legislatures in 2023 alone. These range from curtailing gender-affirming treatment and permitting discrimination to banning books and drag shows.It's gotten so bad that Canada issued a <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/08/30/world/canada/travel-warning-us-lgbtq.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">travel advisory</a> in August about traveling within the United States to its LGBTQ+ citizens.Last year's chilling overturn of Roe v Wade — and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/justice-thomas-said-the-court-should-reconsider-rulings-on-same-sex-marriage-2022-6">Justice Clarence Thomas' troubling remarks </a>about needing to revisit the same-sex marriage decision — make me worry that the very rights that have legally brought me to this country can easily be reconsidered.Then there's the threat of physical and gun violence, at times seemingly random and other times exacerbated by unchecked hate speech in public discourse. <a href="https://www.dhs.gov/lgbtqi-community-resources" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Department of Homeland Security</a> has reported a surge in violence against LGBTQ+ individuals and community spaces, with threats "increasingly tied to hate groups and domestic violent extremists." There have been <a href="https://www.hrc.org/resources/fatal-violence-against-the-transgender-and-nonbinary-community-in-2023" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dozens of instances</a> of fatal gun violence against transgender and nonbinary people this year alone. Just two months ago, a <a href="https://www.insider.com/laura-carleton-killed-suspect-made-disparaging-remarks-pride-flag-sheriff-said-2023-8">store owner in California was shot dead</a> for displaying a pride flag.It's ironic that as a gay interracial couple, Erin and I would have been far safer in Singapore — where private gun ownership is not permitted — than we are in the US.<h2>Making impossible compromises</h2><div type="image" title="Mrigaa and Erin's last vacation in Asia before moving back to the US." height="2575" width="3297" msid="104969988" hostid="261" sizebytes="888936"></div>I was born in India, where my mother tongue has no word for gay people, and the Supreme <a href="https://www.insider.com/indias-supreme-court-legalized-gay-relations-2018-9">Court of India only issued a decision overturning a ban on homosexuality</a> in 2018. I grew up in Thailand, where society tacitly accepts LGBTQ+ communities but there is no legal framework to support them. I lived for a beautiful decade in Singapore, where <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/singapore-decriminalizes-sex-between-men-humanity-wins-say-lgbt-activists-2022-8">homosexuality was only decriminalized this year</a>. None of these countries have marriage equality yet.As a brown queer person, I've stopped waiting around for any one country to hand me the life I want.So despite the many reasons for terror, I am here, not in the best place on Earth, but in America, hoping to build my gay family without dying in the process.

How do these drugs cause weight loss? Apart from the injectable, GLP1 receptor agonists and SGLT2 inhibitors are other types of diabetic drugs available in the market that have been found to be effective for weight loss. “These drugs act through various mechanisms, for instance, they work by increasing the removal of glucose from the body via urinary excretion, thereby leading to the loss of calories from the body,” Dr Brij Mohan <keyword id="76127" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="makkar" source="Orion">Makkar</keyword>, senior diabetologist, president RSSDI told Business Insider India. According to <keyword id="15635207" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="dr-makkar" source="Orion">Dr Makkar</keyword>, Inj Semaglutide 2.4 mg (Wegovvy), which is FDA-approved and is a GLP1 receptor agonist, is said to be the most popular anti-diabetic weight loss drug. Inj Semaglutide drug acts on the brain to reduce appetite, slow gastric emptying, and reduce blood pressure to some extent, all of which have favourable effects on the metabolism. This drug suppresses appetite through its action on the brain, which gives a feeling of fullness. “The drug has been studied in many clinical trials and found safe. The injection needs to be taken once a week and continued for the long term,” Dr Makkar said. He also believes that they do not cause major side effects. “The side effects, if any, are usually mild and subside shortly after treatment initiation,” he added. Are they affordable? In addition to weight loss, anti-diabetic drugs help control other metabolic diseases too. GLP1 receptor agonists and SGLT2 inhibitors also help protect against cardiovascular events. “These classes of drugs showed cardiovascular benefits in studies,” Dr Reddy added. SGLT2 drugs also help in preventing heart failures and are now being used as the first treatment by cardiologists, even among non-diabetics, according to Dr Mohan. Other drugs like <keyword id="123712" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="metformin" source="Orion">Metformin</keyword> (Biguanide family),Glucosidase inhibitors are found to be effective in losing weight. “Metformin remains the primary treatment in type 2 Diabetes. Its mechanism is at central hypothalamic and peripheral gastrointestinal effects glucosidase inhibitor by delaying carbohydrate absorption from gastrointestinal tract,” Dr Somashekara Reddy, consultant - diabetology &amp; endocrinology, Fortis Hospitals, Bangalore told Business Insider India. Another diabetic drug called Liraglutide is recommended by doctors for purely weight loss in many countries like the USA, even among non-diabetics, Dr Mohan added. However, none of the SGLT2 inhibitors have received approval for weight loss so far, in India. Weight loss drugs themselves are few in India. “Currently, only one approved weight loss drug is available in India, and it acts by blocking the absorption of fat. But the drawback is that it is a very mild drug and helps in losing only about 4% of the body weight. It acts differently than diabetes weight loss drugs,” Dr Makkar said. Dr Mohan also highlighted that these two classes of drugs – GLP1 and SGLT2 agent drugs — are highly expensive and beyond the reach of a common man. Can diabetic drugs help you lose weight? Here’s what experts say

<ul><li>India and the US have signed a new landmark defence pact called the Basic Exchange and Cooperation Agreement (BECA).</li><li>It allows the US to share satellite and other surveillance data to improve Indian navigation and targeting capabilities.</li><li>This will improve the accuracy of India’s automated hardware systems and weapons like cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and drones. </li></ul>India and the US have added another layer to the military cooperation between them by signing the Basic Exchange and Cooperation Agreement (BECA) amid the 2+2 ministerial talks happening in Delhi today. Defence ministry’s Additional Secretary Jivesh Nandan signed the agreement on behalf of India. BECA is essentially an agreement between the US’ National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency and India’s Ministry of Defence to share military information. This includes maps, nautical charts, aeronautical charts, unclassified imagery, and other types of data. Within the agreement, there is a provision that allows for the sharing of classified information and the proper safeguards in place to ensure that the same information isn’t shared with any third parties. All of this intelligence will provide India’s military with advanced navigational aid and geospatial information. This will improve the accuracy of its automated hardware systems and weapons like cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and drones. It’s the fourth and final ‘foundational’ agreement between the US and India. India signs landmark military pact with the US to make its drones and missiles more accurate

<ul><li><keyword id="6354576" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="facebook">Facebook</keyword>’s India public policy head <keyword id="1856373" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ankhi-Das">Ankhi Das</keyword> has quit the social networking behemoth. </li><li>Her resignation comes within days of being questioned by a parliamentary panel on data privacy. </li><li>According to Ajit Mohan, the managing director for Facebook in India, Das has stepped down to pursue her interest in public service.</li></ul>Ankhi Das, Facebook's head of public policy who was in the eye of storm over alleged bias in blocking hate content on the social media platform, has quit the social networking giant. "I have decided to step down from facebook after long service to its mission of connecting people and building communities to pursue my personal interest in public service,” she said in her farewell statement. Her resignation comes within days of Facebook being called before a parliamentary panel to discuss issues of data privacy. Ankhi Das — at the eye of the storm Facebook and other social networking sites have come under scrutiny after Wall Street Journal and TIME magazine articles claimed that the social network was not uniform in its application of hate speech rules. Even though some extremist posts were taken down, others — especially those by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders — were left to circulate far and wide. "These posts are taken out of context and don't represent the full scope of Facebook's efforts to support the use of our platform by parties across the political spectrum," the company’s spokesperson said at the time. Ankhi Das exits Facebook Das joined Facebook nine years ago. According to her, the team was small and the mission was to connect people in India at the time. “After nine long years, I feel that mission has largely been met,” she said. Ajit Mohan, the managing director for Facebook in India, commended Das on the instrumental role she played in the company since 2011. "Ankhi has decided to step down from her role in Facebook to pursue her interest in public service," he said. He too has been under fire for Facebook’s practices in the country. Delhi’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in particular has been breathing down his neck for being ‘complicit’ in the violence that broke out during the protests against India’s Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in February. Ankhi Das quits as Facebook's India public policy head

New Delhi, Apr 16 () DCB Bank has witnessed significant jump in its foreign remittance services on the coronavirus outbreak, specially for education purposes, as parents want to ensure their children abroad have sufficient money to sustain themselves in situation of a lockdown. "Since March 15, our volumes on outward remittance services have increased many fold. There is a significant difference in before-and-after demand since mid of March," said Praveen Kutty, Head of Retail and SME Banking, DCB Bank without quantifying the increase in demand.Kutty said the bank has been getting large number of calls from resident Indians as to how they can send money to their children studying abroad, for immigrant Indians and for medical emergencies, among others."There are people whose children are stuck in various places and flying back is not an option. Parents are really worried and want to ensure that at least economically they have means to keep going...That is where DCB Remit comes in," he said in an interaction.Kutty said one need not to be a DCB customer to send money abroad, the person can avail the remittance service by logging into www.dcbremit.com. One can use the DCB Remit platform by transferring funds from savings bank account in another bank anywhere in India to a specified DCB Bank account. However, one needs to activate the fund transfer by using the net banking facility from existing account."Once the indicative exchange rate is put forth, the customer can transfer the funds from any account to DCB Bank's account. The funds will then be transferred to the beneficiary account abroad latest by the next business day," the official added. DCB Bank offers this service for as many as 22 countries including the US, the UK, Australia, Singapore, Canada, the UAE and the Eurozone.This facility can be availed of in seven currencies - the US, Australian, Canadian and Singapore Dollar, British Pound, Euro and UAE Dirham.Money can also be transferred abroad for health purposes and payment of hostel fees by Indian students abroad, family maintenance, business travel, gifting, visa fees and private visits, Kutty added.The limit for overseas fund transfer via DCB Remit is USD 25,000 and/or equivalent in other permitted currencies per financial year, subject to the purpose available on DCB Remit platform.The bank said it has been offering the services, which was launched nearly one and half years back, with a zero cost for a limited time promotion. It is not water. Nor is it data.The world's most precious resource is talent. In the 21st-century knowledge economy, a country's ability to attract, educate and train, and deploy talented people is the most important factor in its economic success.Unfortunately, the current administration does not appear to understand this. At the same time President Trump relentlessly complains about China taking advantage of the US, our actions are allowing China and others to catch up in the race for top global talent.Many of our structural issues pre-exist Trump, but his regulatory changes, bureaucratic maneuvers, and, above all, rhetoric toward immigrants have exacerbated the problem. In 2005, OECD countries accounted for 60% of the 94 million young college-educated workers in the OECD and G-20 nations.By 2030, however, this share will have dropped to about 25% of an enlarged pool of 300 million. China and India will combine for half by this point. The distributional shift will be even more extreme for innovation, with China and India expected to hold 60% of young STEM-degree holders in 2030.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">William Kerr</div></div></div>This dramatic shift will have profound implications. China and India have been a major source of skilled workers to the US and global economy. They represented about 20% of college-educated migration into OECD nations in 2010, and they accounted for over half of all foreign students at US universities last year (around 350,000 Chinese students and 186,000 Indian students).The US should be working to ensure it continues to be a leading destination for talent, especially when many are selecting US schools for their studies. The US does not cap the number of foreign students coming to American universities.Schools and foreign nationals are taking advantage of this opportunity together: <a href="https://www.nsf.gov/statistics/2018/nsb20181/report/sections/higher-education-in-science-and-engineering/undergraduate-education-enrollment-and-degrees-in-the-united-states">Over 800,000</a> international students studied at US universities in 2017 (not counting those on vocational assignments and similar), and international students <a href="https://www.insidehighered.com/quicktakes/2017/10/11/foreign-students-and-graduate-stem-enrollment">constitute</a> especially large shares of STEM graduate programs.These students should be a vast talent pool for US companies to draw upon, but the employer programs they feed into are much smaller in size. The most-used route, the H-1B visa for specialty workers, allows for just 85,000 new visas every year, and many of these scarce slots go to applicants who are living abroad.As a consequence, graduating students often struggle to get a work visa, and their only recourse is a short period of post-study work for 1-3 years, <a href="https://www.uscis.gov/opt">depending on the area of study</a>.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">REUTERS/Tyrone SiuStudents after an SAT exam at AsiaWorld-Expo in Hong Kong, November 2, 2013.</div></div></div>This cycle sees America invest heavily in educating and training potential workers but having many of them forced to leave the country. And they are indeed leaving: <a href="https://qz.com/1342525/chinese-students-increasingly-return-home-after-studying-abroad/">Quartz</a> reported earlier this year that the proportion of Chinese students going home after their studies has accelerated significantly since 2010.The problems with the H-1B visa, however, go well beyond the short supply. The visa allocation process is poorly designed and does not maximize the potential of skilled immigration.When H-1B applications exceed the visa cap within the first week of the annual application period - as happens almost every year - the government allocates the visas by a random lottery. Firms are unable to rank their applications to ensure they get the workers they want. This crude policy encourages companies to submit applications for far more workers than they actually need in the expectation that they will only receive a few visas. This tilts the field toward lower-skilled uses, as it is much easier to find alternative code testers than it is to find a second precision robotics engineer.There are straightforward solutions: I propose to increase the visa cap and better select among applications through mechanisms like wage ranking. We can also set minimum wages for H-1B workers and move to a quarterly allocation system to be more responsive to business needs.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><a href="https://www.gettyimages.com/license/969750416">Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images</a>President Donald Trump speaks at the White House as senior adviser Stephen Miller walks in the background.</div></div></div>But instead of fixing these problems, we're actively making things worse. The Trump Administration's recent actions to <a href="https://www.axios.com/trump-h1b-visa-denials-d7e903ab-1dd6-45d8-9df7-29289cda0076.html">make application screening more difficult</a> and efforts to <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2018/08/28/tech-companies-h4-holders-brace-for-trump-administration-changes-to-h4-visas.html">remove the work authorization for H-4</a>, which allows spouses of H-1B holders to work in the US, diminish America's ability to attract talent.Moreover, the even bigger problem is that skilled migration is a toxic issue, when it should not be. The gains are clear: increased innovation, overall employment <a href="https://www.hbs.edu/faculty/Publication%2520Files/KKL-JOLE15_06018502-4e9b-45de-8631-e57223499317.pdf">growth</a>, and <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2018-10-24/america-s-need-for-skilled-immigrants-isn-t-going-away">contribution</a> to public finances.Public leaders - politicians and business leaders alike - must make the evidence-based case for increasing skilled immigration to the voting public. This includes promoting its benefits and better distributing its gains. Too much of the gift of global talent has gone to a narrow elite within talent clusters like Silicon Valley, leaving behind both locals and those in other parts of the country.Countries that have succeeded in making this case are reaping benefits. Immigration is a pillar of <a href="https://www.economist.com/leaders/2018/10/27/what-the-world-can-learn-from-australia">Australia's economic growth</a>, and the entrepreneurs who are leaving the US <a href="https://www.mercurynews.com/2018/10/08/h-1b-as-immigration-furor-roils-silicon-valley-canada-smoothes-way-for-techies/">for places like Canada</a> bring similar success - and jobs - to their new homes.America has gained so much through welcoming talented people to its shores. We cannot let go of this gift.William R. Trump's war on immigration is sacrificing his best weapon against China

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">Reuters/Adnan AbidiBritain's Prime Minister Theresa May (R) and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi arrive to attend the India-UK Tech Summit in New Delhi, India, November 7, 2016.</div></div></div>Britain's post-Brexit trade negotiations with India are at risk of being derailed before they have even begun, thanks to a huge split between the two countries on immigration.Prime Minister Theresa May is in India on an official visit to try and lay the groundwork for a major trade deal between the two nations once the <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword> has formally left the European Union, but has already hit a brick wall thanks to the Indian government's tough stance on immigration when it comes to any deal.Essentially, India's demand for doing a deal with Britain - as it has been with other countries in the past - is that more Indian citizens must be allowed to work in the country, in return for increasing trade. Unfortunately for Britain, putting stronger controls on immigration was the biggest reason people voted for Brexit, so any deal that includes extra immigration seems unlikely to be widely accepted.Basically, there is a fundamental disconnect between the anti-immigration stance of many Brexiteers, and their desire for free trade deals, given that the movement of people is often a key component in trade agreements. This is especially true of India.India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi made this point very clear in an appearance with May on Monday morning in India's capital, New Delhi. "Education is vital for our students and will define our engagement in a shared future," <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-37891734">Modi said at a technology summit, according to the BBC.</a> "We must therefore encourage greater mobility and participation of young people in education and research opportunities," he added, making a thinly veiled criticism of the UK's policy on student visa, something that has long been a sore spot between the two nations.British government policy currently requires that international students return to their home country, or at least leave the UK, once they have completed their studies. Since the policy was implemented - during May's tenure as Home Secretary - the number of Indian students enrolling in British universities has fallen by 50%.During the same summit, May defended the policy, saying: "We have a visa system for countries outside the European Union which ensures that the brightest and the best are able to come to the United Kingdom." "The figures show that we issued more work visas to India than I think the U.S., Australia, Canada and China put together."The sticking point on immigration in any deal between the UK and India is something that has been raised previously. Last month, Sir Thomas Harris - a trade expert, who was once the British ambassador to Korea, and is former vice chairman of emerging markets-focused bank Standard Chartered - <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/brexit-analysis-sir-thomas-harris-on-brexit-and-trade-deals-with-india-2016-10">told a conference in London that Britain's will really struggle to do a deal with the likes of India.</a>During his appearance at the Brexit and Global Expansion Summit, Harris said:"What's the single biggest Indian demand for their trade deals? The single biggest demand is reciprocal access in the EU markets for a very significantly enhanced Mode 4 arrangement. That is for greater access for skilled and technical staff from India."He also used the example of the EU's attempts to strike a trade deal with India to show just how hard each individual trade deal will be, saying: "Some Brexiteers suggest that we can do deals with major Commonwealth countries like India. What they fail to understand is that the EU has been in negotiations with India for the last eight years, and has failed to conclude a deal. And what were the sticking points in those negotiations?"The sticking points were over trade in services - in accountancy, banking, insurance, and legal services - where the UK was the primary EU demandeur.
