Online scams in India have been on the rise for the last few months and every now and then, a new case surfaces where a victim loses their hard-earned money. Usually, scammers in many cases pose as company officials to steal your sensitive information and misuse it. In one such recent incident, a 44-year-old woman from <keyword id="19895934" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="noida" source="keywords">Noida</keyword> recently fell victim to an <keyword id="20971199" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="esim-scam" source="Orion">eSIM scam</keyword>, losing ₹27 lakh and becoming the target of fraudulent loan activity. The scam involved the manipulation of her <keyword id="19909735" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sim" source="keywords">SIM</keyword> card and banking details, which allowed the fraudster to siphon off her funds and take out a loan in her name. <h2>What exactly happened</h2> According to an HT report, <keyword id="23110017" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jyotsana-bhatia" source="keywords">Jyotsana Bhatia</keyword>, a resident of Sector 82 in Noida, works at a private company and filed a complaint with the cybercrime police station in Sector 36. On August 31, Bhatia received a WhatsApp call from a person posing as a customer care executive from her telecom provider. The caller explained that her SIM card could be converted to an embedded SIM (eSIM), which is a digital version of a physical SIM card and can be helpful in case of phone loss. The suspect offered to help Bhatia activate the eSIM feature, instructing her to select the option in her mobile carrier’s application and enter a verification code that was sent to her phone. Bhatia, unaware of the fraud, followed the steps as instructed. Unfortunately, as soon as she entered the code, her physical SIM card was deactivated. The suspect assured her that a new SIM card would be delivered by September 1, leaving her temporarily without access to her mobile number. When the promised SIM card failed to arrive, Bhatia contacted the telecom provider’s customer care service and was advised to visit the service centre to get a replacement. After three days, on September 3, she was issued a new SIM card. However, by then, the damage had already been done. Bhatia started receiving messages from her bank, revealing that the fraudster had accessed her mobile banking account using her deactivated phone number. By changing the associated email ID, the suspect was able to bypass security checks and transfer large sums of money from her accounts. The fraudster also broke her fixed deposit, siphoned money from two bank accounts, and even took out a loan of ₹7.40 lakh in her name. Bhatia reported that the total amount stolen in multiple transactions amounted to ₹27 lakh. Shocked by the breach, she immediately filed an FIR with the cybercrime unit. The police registered the case under sections 318(4) (cheating) and 319(2) (cheating by personation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, as well as under relevant sections of the IT Act. Efforts to track down the suspect are currently underway. <h2>Understanding eSIM and its risks </h2> An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital version of a SIM card that is built into a device and does not require a physical card. While this technology is convenient and allows users to switch networks or plans without handling a physical card, it also opens the door to new forms of fraud. Scammers can manipulate eSIM features to deactivate a user’s existing SIM card and take control of their phone number, which is linked to various accounts and services. In this case, the fraudster exploited the victim’s trust by posing as a telecom customer care executive, taking advantage of her lack of knowledge about the risks associated with eSIM activation. Once the fraudster gained control of her phone number, they accessed her bank accounts through mobile banking applications that rely on the phone number for authentication. By changing the email ID linked to her account, they prevented the victim from receiving security alerts and were able to make unauthorised transactions without her knowledge.

It is a known fact that several scam callers <a href="https://www.firstpost.com/india/how-an-army-of-online-criminals-has-turned-india-into-a-call-centre-fraud-haven-10121201.html">operate</a> from India to steal money from people in western countries. Here’s where Mark Rober comes in. Rober is a former NASA engineer and YouTuber who posts videos about the stuff builds on his channel. He is popularly known for his over-engineered packages that he builds to prank people who steal packages from outside houses. After coming across Mrs Bessie, an elderly person who was scammed by a person for $20,000, Rober took it upon himself to get to the bottom of this. Thanks to Browning, the team already had access to the security feeds at the call centre. While the cockroaches were being removed, the fogger started smoking and the rat box was triggered. This resulted in several scam call centres across Kolkata and Delhi being shut off for several days. Rober ends the video with a request to viewers to share the video with the Kolkata Police on Twitter. Here's how a group of YouTubers pranked a scam call centre in India that makes $18 million per year

(Photo Source: wikimedia.org) <ul><li>Fake call centers in Indian cities—Gurugram and Noida—tricked over 50,000 people from across 15 countries in the name of IT giant, Microsoft. </li><li>The fraudsters in question notified people that their systems had been infected by a <keyword id="10860" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Virus">virus</keyword> via pop-up messages and offered them assistance as Microsoft support officials, in turn demanding money to rectify their system. </li><li>Investigating agencies — Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Interpol and Canada’s Royal Canadian Mounted police (RCMP) — have joined the investigation being conducted by the Gurugram and Noida police.</li></ul>Microsoft Corporation (India) Private Ltd was recently in talks with Gurugram police in to investigate a <keyword id="29409" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="cyber-crime">cyber crime</keyword> that went on to tricking people from over 15 countries in the name of Microsoft, Hindustan Times <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/gurugram/gurugram-police-joined-hands-with-fbi-interpol-to-bust-call-centre-scam/story-RJA614XdShh4kv9MyUgBFJ.html?utm_campaign=fullarticle&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=inshorts">reported</a>. The fraud was reported at the Gurugram police commissioner’s office where teams from Singapore and Ireland presented the matter, along with India’s cyber crime team. <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/gurugram/fake-call-centres-dupe-people-across-the-world/story-ttriXPJpzot8Sum0VjtNjN.html">Eight teams</a> were reportedly formed including 40 technical experts and 50 officials from the police force to raid the call centers. On 27 November, Microsoft filed 17 First Information Report (FIRs) against call centers in Gurugram and Noida. To counter the global fraud, Gurugram and Noida police along with other investigating agencies — Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Interpol and Canada’s Royal Canadian Mounted police (RCMP) — have shut down over 17 call centers, arresting 42 people involved in the scam, <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/gurugram/gurugram-police-joined-hands-with-fbi-interpol-to-bust-call-centre-scam/story-RJA614XdShh4kv9MyUgBFJ.html?utm_campaign=fullarticle&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=inshorts">said the report</a>. This lead to the users landing a call on a given number, which were operated from the call centers — the team then posed as Microsoft support team offering solutions to rectify their system and in turn demanded money. Fake call centers in India tricked over 50,000 people across 15 countries, FBI joins investigation

However, fake customer service calling numbers set up by fraudsters to deceive customers are thriving, as per a report by CloudSEK, an AI company that predicts cyberthreats. XVigil’s (CloudSEK’s risk monitoring platform) Fake Customer Care module has flagged 31,179 such fraudulent numbers, with many of them having been active for over 2 years. The findings show that about 56% (i.e. 17,285) of these were Indian numbers, while the rest were non-Indian. Further, 80% of the Indian numbers were found to be valid and still operational. Analysis of the content present on the source domains associated with each number also showed that entities in the banking and finance sectors (39.4%) were the primary targets of impersonation, followed by those in the telecommunication(31.2%) and healthcare sectors(9.9%). This is an apt modern-day phishing technique, which builds around the trust created in solving customer queries and deceives people into revealing sensitive information, allowing the fraudsters to steal user data. In its report, CloudSEK researchers have analysed a sample of around 20,000 Indian mobile numbers used by fraudsters to run such customer care scams. Out of the remaining 12% of the numbers, Twitter emerged as the most popular distribution medium, accounting for 6.2% of the total traffic. Twitter was followed by Google. Despite Facebook claiming to have taken down close to 2 billion fake accounts per quarter, scammers continue to flood Facebook with fake profiles and pages. Social media continues to be the preferred medium for scammers to trick people because it allows them to reach a large user base in a short period. To create an impression of authenticity, scammers frequently include a brief introduction and links to their social media accounts or posts alongside the counterfeit customer support numbers. However, a closer examination of these links reveals that they typically lead users to fake domains and fraudulent Whatsapp or Telegram accounts; and sometimes even the email addresses are fake. Scammers leverage social media accounts to lure customers to call on fake customer numbers, visit phishing sites and send emails from their personal accounts, thus compromising their email IDs. The unwary users search for customer care numbers and may end up calling a fake customer care number. When customers call these fake call centres, the scamsters use this opportunity to retrieve financial information, OTP, etc., from aggrieved customers via social engineering methods – which refers to techniques used illegitimately to manipulate people to perform certain actions or reveal specific information. Generally, scammers try to leverage impersonation and the fear factor to collect money from the victims. Thereafter, the threat actors gain access to the victim’s bank account and purchase gift cards, etc, or transfer the amount to another account. There have been instances where a customer lost as much as ₹16 lakh due to a wrong google search leading to a fake customer care number, CloudSEK said. Fake customer care numbers have been thriving under the cyber radar purely because people tend to be ignorant while engaging with customer care numbers.

Callers beware! Over 31,000 fake customer care numbers are out there to scam you

New York, A <keyword id="98892" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="federal-court">federal court</keyword> has permanently shut down a US-based computer scam that preyed on elderly Americans using call centre operators in <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> resulting in losses of hundreds of thousands of dollars. In a statement on Tuesday, the <keyword id="67869" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Department-of-Justice">Department of Justice</keyword> said that the court gave the <keyword id="3528317" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Permanent-injunction">permanent injunction</keyword> against Michael Brian Cotter and four <keyword id="22917" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Companies">companies</keyword> barring them offering <keyword id="843005" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="technical-support">technical support</keyword> through telemarketing and web sites following a joint operation by US authorities and India's Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The alleged fraudsters in some cases impersonated Microsoft, which brought cases to the attention of the Transnational Elder Fraud Strike Force., the <keyword id="6360339" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="department">Department</keyword> said. The Department had filed in October a request for the injunction against Cotter and the companies before the court in Miami, <keyword id="6357385" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="florida">Florida</keyword>, which is an area with a concentration of retirees, and a temporary injunction was granted immediately and was now made permanent. Acknowledging India's cooperation, Acting Assistant Attorney General Jeffrey Bossert Clark said: "The Department is grateful for the cooperation of foreign law enforcement, including India's CBI, in investigating, disrupting, and prosecuting technical-support fraud schemes and other schemes originating abroad and directed at the American public." The complaint said that Cotter allegedly worked with co-conspirators in India, but did not identify them. One of the companies mentioned in the complaint is registered in Singapore. The US federal government also took over 19 domain names like "assistmysoftware" and "helpforsoftware" that were used in the alleged scam to prevent their continued use. According to the Department of Justice's complaint, the alleged fraud involved causing pop-up messages to appear on computer screens purporting to be from Microsoft or other companies falsely claiming that the computers were infected with viruses and asking the users to call a phone number for help. When they called the number it was transferred to call centres in India from where the operators asked to access the computers and then claimed they had detected "non-existent" problems and charged them hundreds of dollars claiming falsely to fix fake issues on the computer, the complaint said. The Department said that since President Donald Trump signed the Elder Abuse Prevention and Prosecution Act (EAPPA) into law in October 2017, it has participated in hundreds of enforcement actions against scams targeting seniors. India's CBI helped US sleuths shut down a call centre scam that impersonated Microsoft at times

The verdict comes a few months after the accused pleaded guilty of conspiracy and fraud. Sahil Narang, a resident of Gurgaon, was in the US illegally when he was arrested in May 2019. He has been described as a ‘key participant’ in tech fraud and refund fraud – usually targeted at technologically unsophisticated computer users, who are often senior citizens. According to acting United States attorney Richard B Myrus, Narang has been sentenced to three years in prison, which will be followed by three years of supervised release. The facts of the case put forward by the US federal prosecutors state that internet pop-up advertisements were used to fool computer users into believing that their computers were affected by malware. These advertisements would make the users believe that they needed computer protection services. A number would be displayed, and when dialed, the users would be routed to call centres run by Narang. Further, these call centre operators would call the affected users to tell them they could get a refund of the amount paid. They would then say a refund has been processed to the user. To double dip, these operators would call the users again to tell them they had refunded an excess amount, and that these users would have to repay the difference. To make it seem believable, these operators would display fake bank balances on the computer screens of these users. These users would then be asked to ‘refund’ the excess money they were told they had received – essentially, the users would end up paying the fraudsters twice. Narang’s fraud scheme had a success rate of 30% According to the federal prosecutors and a nine-month investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (<keyword id="6355946" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="fbi">FBI</keyword>), Narang’s fraud scheme had a success rate of 30%.
