With one more people dead in <keyword id="109597" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="udalguri" source="Orion">Udalguri</keyword> district, the death toll rose to eight in the ongoing pre-monsoon <keyword id="48088" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="floods" source="Orion">floods</keyword> and landslides in <keyword id="6354915" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="assam" source="Orion">Assam</keyword>, where over four lakh people have been affected in 26 districts so far, officials said on Tuesday. Officials in the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said that in the last 24 hours, one person died in western Assam's Udalguri district, while seven people had died earlier in the floods and landslides in <keyword id="385380" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="dima-hasao" source="Orion">Dima Hasao</keyword> and Lakhimpur districts. Unofficial report from <keyword id="71093" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="cachar" source="Orion">Cachar</keyword> district, however, said that four people, including a child and two middle-aged men, were washed away in different rivers. An ASDMA bulletin said that at least 4,03,352 people, including 80,659 children and 1,39,541 women, have been affected and around 1,900 houses have been either partially and fully damaged in 1,089 villages under 26 districts. Over 39,558 people have taken shelter in 89 relief camps. The worst-affected districts include, Cachar, Dima Hasao, Hojai, <keyword id="322513" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nagaon" source="Orion">Nagaon</keyword>, Charaideo, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Bajali, Baksa, Biswanath and Lakhimpur. The situation in the hill section of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) in Dima Hasao district remained critical on Tuesday as rain continued to batter the mountainous region, affecting the Lumding-Badarpur single line railway route. NFR officials said that uninterrupted rains coupled with the difficult terrain severely affected the restoration and repair work, which might take several weeks. The Lumding-Badarpur section in Assam is the only route to connect Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur and the southern part of Assam with the rest of the country. This rail link has been cut off for the past four days.

Over four lakh people affected as pre-monsoon rains trigger floods in Assam

Assam's COVID-19 cases crossed the 1,200-mark on Saturday with 159 people, including 20 air travellers, across districts testing positive for the disease, state Health and Family Welfare Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. With these cases, the total number of COVID-19 patients has gone up to 1,216 in the state from 1,057 on Friday. OF the total cases, 1,046 are active, Sarma said in a tweet. "Alert -- 31 new cases of COVID-19. 20 Air travellers, <keyword id="744190" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Morigaon">Morigaon</keyword> 11," the minister added. Earlier during the day, Sarma said samples of 128 persons from across the districts tested positive. Kokrajhar and Chirang reported 26 cases, 20 in Hailakandi, 13 each in Kamrup and Dibrugarh, nine in Jorhat, seven in Golaghat, five in Dhubri, three in Barpeta, two in Cachar and one in Bongaigaon, he said. The minister said 29 people have tested positive for coronavirus but the districts to which they belong are yet to be ascertained. In a separate tweet, he said 38 patients have recovered from the disease and discharged from hospitals after their samples tested negative twice. Out of the total cases, four patients have died, while 163 have been cured and were discharged from hospitals, Sarma said, adding three more patients have migrated to other states. On Friday, Assam had crossed the 1,000-mark in COVID-19 cases with a single day highest tally of 177 new patients. Earlier, Sarma said a CSIR-NEIST COVID-19 testing laboratory will be functional in Jorhat district of Upper Assam. After inter-state movement through road, rail and air communication was allowed during the lockdown, Assam saw manifold rise in COVID-19 cases. To screen all the people coming from outside the state, the government has imposed a mandatory institutional quarantine policy for everyone, barring some exceptions. Assam COVID-19 tally crosses  1,200-mark with 159 new cases

<keyword id="6354915" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="assam" source="Orion">Assam</keyword> has an estimated 25,073 People Living with HIV (PLHIV), according to Assam State AIDS Control Society (ASACS). Of the 25,073 PLHIV, 45 per cent are female and three per cent are children, it said. The HIV prevalence rate in Assam is 0.09 per cent, lower than the national prevalence rate of 0.21 per cent, the ASACS said in a release, quoting the NACO HIV Estimation Report 2021, on the occasion of <keyword id="34644" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="world-aids-day" source="Orion">World AIDS Day</keyword> on Thursday. The total number of people alive by taking AntiRetroviral therapy (<keyword id="1105" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="art" source="Orion">ART</keyword>) is 10,765 in the state. <keyword id="6403345" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="kamrup" source="Orion">Kamrup</keyword> (Metropolitan) district has the highest number of cases at 7,610, followed by Cachar with 5,200, Nagaon 16,02 and Dibrugarh 1,402. Regarding the route of transmission in Assam, 81.63 per cent is through sex between heterosexuals, 5.54 per cent is through HIV-infected syringe and needles, parent to child is 4.76 per cent, homosexual route is 4.61 per cent, 0.85 per cent through blood transfusions and 2.61 is not specified, it said. ASACS has undertaken various activities to create awareness by disseminating HIV messages in mass media (print and electronic), outdoor media (hoardings, bus and train panelling), folk media, social media (facebook, twitter, instagram), activities during festivals, events and HIV awareness in colleges through <keyword id="1182088" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="red-ribbon-clubs" source="Orion">Red Ribbon Clubs</keyword> and schools through Adolescence Education Programme, the release stated. On the occasion of World AIDS Day, the state Health department will organise a central function at the Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) where Minister for Health and Family Welfare Keshab Mahanta will launch ten Opioid Substitution Therapy (OPD-OST) Dispensing Centres for district hospitals across Assam. A rally was also flagged off at GMCH auditorium complex by renowned swimmer Elvis Ali Hazarika with students from colleges and various institutions, NGOs and other stakeholders participating. World AIDS Day is being observed in all districts across Assam with rallies, public meetings and various other activities.

Assam's COVID-19 death toll mounts to 242

(Eds: With latest updates) Guwahati, Aug 17 () Eight more COVID-19 patients died in Assam on Monday, pushing the death toll in the state to 197, Minister for Health and Family Welfare Himanta Biswa Sarma said. Assam's caseload stood at 79,667 after 2,792 people tested positive since Sunday, he said. Two fatalities were reported from Cachar and one each from Tinsukia, Darrang, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Udalguri and Kamrup Rural districts, he said. The fresh cases in the state include 458 fromKamrup Metropolitan, 227 from Cachar, 225 from Dibrugarh and 195 fromKamrup Rural, among others. There are 22,733 active COVID-19 cases in the state, while 56,743 people have been discharged, Sarma said. Altogether 17,75,403 samples have been tested so far, with Assam having a positivity rate of 6.46 per cent. The recovery rate in the state is 71.58 per cent, while the doubling rate of patients has increased to 16.4 days from 15.2 days last week. (Eds: Updates with latest figures) Guwahati, May 28 () The number of COVID-19 cases crossed the 800-mark in Assam on Thursday with 73 people testing positive for the disease, taking the total to 856, state Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. Twenty-five new cases were reported in the evening -- 13 from Kamrup (Metro), four from Cachar, three each from Dhemaji and Barpeta and two from Kokrajhar. Thirty-three cases were reported in the afternoon -- 10 from Nagaon, eight from Kamrup (Metro), seven from Cachar, two each from Karimganj and Hailakandi, one each from Hojai and Dima Hasao, while two are yet to be ascertained. Fifteen new cases were reported in the morning -- 11 from Kamrup (Metro), three from Dibrugarh and one from Lakhimpur. Of the 856 cases in the northeastern state, 762 are active. Four patients have died in the state, three have migrated and 87 have recovered. Assam saw a significant increase in the number of COVID-19 cases after inter-state movement by road and trains was allowed during the lockdown. A total of 469 coronavirus cases have been detected in the state so far this week. The state recorded its highest single-day spike of 156 cases on Monday, while 139 people tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday and 101 on Wednesday. Sarma said most of the latest cases are returnees from other states. The Assam government has decided that everyone coming from outside will be sent for institutional quarantine. No home quarantine will be allowed for the first seven days, till the test results arrive. A total of 72,564 samples have been tested for coronavirus so far in the state, of which 66,562 have turned out to be negative, according to the daily bulletin issued by the state Health and Family Welfare department. The state government is following the policy of declaring containment and buffer zones after coronavirus cases are found in particular areas. As on date, there are 46 containment zones in the state -- 14 in Kamrup (Metro), six each in Cachar and Bongaigaon, four in Dhubri, three in Kamrup (Rural), two each in Golaghat, Goalpara and Bishwanath and one each in Majuli, Charaideo, Karbi Anglong, Kokrajhar, Karimganj, Hojai and Nagaon. Meanwhile, flight operations to and from Dibrugarh and Tezpur airports began from Thursday, with each operating single flights during the day, an airport spokesperson said. Passenger flight services resumed on Monday after a gap of two months. Thirteen domestic flights were scheduled to arrive at and depart from the Lokopriyo Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport on Thursday, the spokesperson said. The Assam government has also decided to disburse full salaries and pensions for the month of May and this has been possible due to the release of the devolution grant by the Centre, Sarma, who is also the state finance minister, said. 73 fresh COVID-19 cases reported in Assam, total count 856

Guwahati, Oct 3 () Assam reported 1,632 new cases of COVID-19 and 14 more deaths on Saturday, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. While the death toll increased to 735, the state witnessed higher recoveries at 1,813 for the third consecutive day, he said. Three of the latest deaths were reported from Jorhat, followed by two deaths each in Kamrup Metropolitan and Nalbari districts, Sarma said. Dibrugarh, Nagaon, Kamrup, Cachar, Sivasagar, Lakhimpur and Karbi Anglong also witnessed one death each, the minister said. Assam has recorded 1,85,444 cases of COVID-19 so far, of which more than 45,000 have been detected in Guwahati. There are 33,933 active cases in the state at present.
