BANGALORE: The fight to win over the Indian taxi passenger has intensified with aggregator Olacabs and cab hailing app Uber slashing prices by a fourth in Delhi—a development that is likely to force rivals to follow suit. 
 
While Ola has cut rates in its lowerend car business—Ola mini—to Rs 10 /km, Uber has cut prices for its premium segment Uber BLACK. Separately, the San Francisco-based taxi hailing app also announced that it will be launching its affordable ride service UberX in three more Indian cities: Mumbai, Chennai and Pune. “We are pushing our efficiency system to the maximum,” said Shailesh Sawlani, general manager of Uber in Mumbai. "We see this as a daily commute option for our riders and plan to maintain these prices if customers ride with us as much as we anticipate." 
 UberX Mumbai fares are Rs 15/km with a minimum base fare of Rs 50 and total minimum fare of Rs 125. The latest moves come after Uber cut its prices in Bangalore by 25% last month. Ola also reduced fares to Rs10/km for its <keyword id="2210965" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Ola-Mini">Ola Mini</keyword> service in the Garden City. “We have been able to optimise our inventory,” said Pranay Jivrajka, vice president of operations at Olacabs. 
 
According to industry estimates, taxi companies are struggling to keep pace with the rising demand and on average cannot accommodate a fifth of the bookings. To address this problem Ola said it will increase the number of cabs available on its mobile app by about 35% to 3,200 in Delhi alone. Ola’s total fleet size is about 15,000. 
 
“These price cuts are just a starting point to acquire customers and establishing the brand image till the time you hit a critical mass,” said Arvind Singhal, chairman of Technopak. “At Rs 10/km Ola is making losses on each Ola Mini ride,” said a source directly familiar with the matter. Same is the case with Uber, according to another source. Uber’s price drop in Bangalore is, however, for a limited duration. 
 The company has not specified the timeframe. Other competitors like TaxiFor-Sure are focussing on discount codes to expand the customer base instead of cutting prices. “We keep doing event-related promotions and offer discount vouchers from time to time,” said Aprameya Radhakrishna, founder and chief executive of <keyword id="1428790" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="TaxiforSure">TaxiForSure</keyword>. 
 
“Till the time, taxi aggregators will not face pressure to turn profitable, the freebies will continue,” said Jaspal Singh, cofounder of Valoriser Consultants, which provides market research services for transportation companies. “These companies are looking to build valuation by expanding geographic reach, recruiting more number of drivers and attracting bookings to increase revenue.” 
 However other aggregators like <keyword id="108722" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Meru-Cabs">Meru Cabs</keyword> and Savaari cabs feel that price cuts is not sustainable long-term. “Meru does not believe in price wars,” said Siddhartha Pahwa, CEO of MERU Cabs. “Consumers will not take a cab because it’s cheap but for its reliability, safety and professional service.”

With the national capital’s <keyword id="71724" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="traffic-congestion">traffic congestion</keyword> problems and air quality issues, the consequences of this move may have ample environmental fallouts. Under the City Taxi Scheme 2017, cabs are only allowed to pick up and drop passengers from one point to the next. Currently legal provisions only allow buses to pick up other passengers along the route and make multiple stops. Experts believe that one of the reasons is the focus on ride-sharing. The ban could either be good for the companies if customers shift to solo rides. Or, bad if customers choose to shift to public transport altogether or find other alternative means of transportation. Other issues on the table In reviewing the regulations for cabs in the Indian national capital, the committee is also discussing the issue of green fuels and permits. Possible outcomes include enforcing that cabs only use fuels like CNG or LPG and providing proof of parking before applying for a permit. The biggest development to come is probably the tracking of cabs. Currently, cabs in the city aren’t monitored as they pick up and drop passengers. But the committee is considering adding GPS monitoring to the roster, not only for cabs in Delhi but for cabs that are registered in other states while operating within the city. For actual customers, the issues of greater relevance are the ‘panic’ button that will soon become a mandatory feature in cabs and putting a cap on the maximum fare that companies can charge from customers. If the scheme also goes through with its plan of limiting the number of cabs that can be put on call by a cab operator, the demand-supply disparity might even increase the overall prices in the market. The committee, that includes the transport minister Kailash Gahlot and Satyender Jain, a minister at the Public Works Department, is currently reviewing the City Taxi Scheme 2017, Licensing and Regulation of App-based Cab Aggregator Rules 2017 and app-based premium bus services. Sources have told Times of <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> that this the committee is unlikely to rule in the favour of companies being allowed to operate ride-sharing in Delhi. They were originally supposed to come to a decision on Monday, but that has now be deferred to a date that is yet to be decided.

In a setback to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=ola+cabs">Ola cabs</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=delhi+high+court">Delhi High Court</a> dismissed its plea challenging a single-judge order upholding <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=delhi+government">Delhi government</a>'s ban on such taxi services. 
 
"Appeal dismissed," a bench of Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice Jayant Nath said. 
 
On July 29, single-judge, in his interim order, had directed Delhi government's transport department and traffic police to "strictly enforce" the January 1 ban. 
 
The single-judge also sought an undertaking from ANI Technologies, which operates under the brand name of Ola that it will comply with the court's order. 
 
On August 4, the division bench had reserved its order after hearing arguments on Ola's plea. Ola accused single-judge of overlooking <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=supreme+court">Supreme Court</a>'s orders on the kind of taxis that can run on city's roads. 
 
Ola had argued that other non-app based taxi organisations come under <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=radio+taxi+scheme">Radio Taxi Scheme</a> and Ola does not own the vehicles that run under their brand and only connects the taxis with customers. 
 
The company released an official statement stating, "We respect the Honorable Divisional Bench's order on commercial diesel vehicles on all aggregator platforms in the state of New Delhi, as well as on those plying independently. We are working closely with the authorities to help and support the thousands of driver entrepreneurs and lakhs of citizens in the state, who use the Ola app." 
 
The Delhi government had said the All India Tourist Permit (AITP) vehicles that operate under Ola brand are meant for tourist destinations and not point-to-point service in city. 
 
In this regard, the single-judge admonished Ola for not complying with the ban imposed on it by Delhi government on January 01 this year and refused to grant it any interim relief. 
 
The single-judge had refused to provide any relief to Ola. 
 
The court had earlier questioned how Ola was operating in Delhi when the city government's order banning them had not been stayed and warned of a shutdown if it thought it was above the law.

Ola cabs remains banned in Delhi as high court dismisses plea

Though <keyword id="4191690" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="sarvodaya-drivers-association-of-delhi">Sarvodaya Drivers Association of Delhi</keyword> (SDAD), the major force behind the strike refused to accept that the strike is off, around 70% of cabs plied yesterday morning. 
 
Neither the cab aggregators nor the government have communicated anything new for addressing the issue of cab drivers. 
 
However, passengers complained that surge pricing is still on and some people had to shell out almost double their normal fares.

Ola is also giving lucrative offers to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=drivers">drivers</a> of saving up to Rs 1.5 lakh on exchanging their old diesel vehicles for a new CNG one in next six months. 
 
"This is the largest amongst a series of programs rolled out by Ola to encourage CNG adoption in Delhi-NCR. By the next week, the intent is to ramp up by at least 25 per cent,” said Pranay. 
 
With over 3,50,000 vehicles registered on its platform, Ola offers services across 102 cities in India.

Ola is pumping Rs 200 crore to increase fleet of CNG cabs in Delhi-NCR

As per an order from the <keyword id="6355014" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Delhi-High-Court">Delhi High Court</keyword>, <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword>, <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword> and the radio taxis' association will be giving out details of the cabs that are intended to be phased out by March 31 because of an order from as per the Supreme Court's order. 
 
Justice J R Midha has issued the direction to ANI Technologies Ltd, the company behind Ola cars, Association of Radio Taxis and Uber. This has been done because the Delhi government needs the details of cabs that are to be phased out, so that proper action can be taken after the deadline. 
 
The court has given these companies time till April 10 so that the details can be submitted along with an affidavit in a sealed cover. 
 
The details are required by the transport department so that action can be taken against companies not complying with court orders.

Cabby, the cab aggregator app to be launched today, has been developed by Sahil Arora, a seventeen-year-old school dropout from Gurgaon. The app will have 25,000 operational cabs in NCR, following which it would move to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/bengaluru-feel-relieved-as-ola-anduber-drivers-call-off-strike/articleshow/57221582.cms">Bengaluru</a>.

 Cabby would charge a base fare of Rs 37.50 for the first 2 km, followed by Rs 12.5 per km. Arora told ET that this is actually very competitive, and the fare would be lesser than what <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword> and Uber charge.

The second cab-aggregator app to be launched today is from 74 BC Technologies, operational from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/UberMOTO-enters-Gurgaon/articleshow/51603369.cms">Gurgaon</a> where it is known for the bike taxi aggregator Baxi. 
 
Baxi is now launching cab services in seven cities including Delhi, Ghaziabad, Gurgaon, Mumbai, Pune, Chennai and Bengaluru. Acting as a technology provider for the app, it will be available free of cost for cab drivers. 
 
"Baxi will not take any commission from the drivers to use their technology platform," said Ashutosh Johri, co-founder of Baxi and an IIT Delhi alumnus. It would charge a base fare of Rs 50, followed by Rs 9 per km. Having around 1,000 cabs in its fleet, it would also have Re 1/minute wait charges.

Two new apps to take on Ola and Uber in NCR

Gone are the days when you had to contact the local travel agency to get a cab or hail one off the road or the neighborhood taxi stand. The proliferation of radio cab services across several major cities in India has allowed seamless booking of cabs anytime and anywhere over a call, and now through smartphone <keyword id="6354741" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Apps">apps</keyword>. 
 
Uber 
 
The San Francisco-based transportation network company prefers to position itself as a technology company that offers mobile apps to connect passengers with drivers of vehicles for hire and ridesharing services. 
 The service was recently launched in India, and offers two tiers of cars for hire – UberBLACK and uberX – appealing to a broader cross-section of the market. The service, which has grown to 10 cities, is already making India the biggest market for Uber outside of the <keyword id="6356955" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="united-states">United States</keyword>. 
 You need to sign up using the app with your credit card (some debit cards work too). The app shows the estimated time of arrival (ETA) of available cars around you. Once you book it, you can track the reserved car’s location on a map and contact the <keyword id="6366401" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Driver">driver</keyword> as well. After the ride, the amount is debited from the linked card and you don’t have to pay any cash to the driver. The app also allows ridesharing, so two friends sharing a ride can split the fare between two seamlessly. 
 
Uber is a great way to ‘hail a cab’ via an app. But you cannot book one in advance, and that sometimes is a concern, for example: you don’t want to leave a booking till last minute for a 4 am flight. 
 
Meru Cabs 
 Meru Cabs is one of the most popular and earliest radio cabs service in India. The fleet service provides services in seven cities - Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Hyderabad, <keyword id="6354321" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword>, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, and Chennai – with two fleet levels, Meru and Meru Plus. 
 Unlike Uber, the Meru Cabs app is only needed for booking the cab. Once the cab has been booked and you’ve contacted the driver, you don’t need the app for the ride. Of course it’s good to have to check out route details and share <keyword id="154361" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="feedback">feedback</keyword>, but it’s not required. The meter is available in the car and you need to pay off the driver at the end of the trip. 
 
Also, the app allows you book a cab for a trip right away (within 35 minutes) or in advance beyond 35 minutes for up to 3 days. You can also check out you booking history from within the app. 
 
Mega Cabs 
 
Similar to Meru Cabs in service and app experience, Mega Cabs is also one of the early radio cabs service in the country. The only difference is that Mega Cabs does not have fleet/car options, and has a unified fare. 
 With presence in six cities – Delhi NCR, <keyword id="6354925" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kolkata">Kolkata</keyword>, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Amritsar, and Ludhiana – the company claims to be India’s largest taxi service network. 
 
Olacabs 
 
Ola is quite simply the Indian Uber and has quickly grown to serve 10 cities already. Modelled on the latter, Olacabs does not own its own fleet and partners with car rental services making their cars for hire available through the app. Like Uber, there are two fleet levels, sedan and mini, and even the referral credit is the same Rs 300! 
 
Of course, the Indian company takes care of lack of penetration of credit cards in the country. You can recharge your account to keep ‘Ola Money’ in your account for frequent payments, or pay cash to the driver at the end of the trip. Also, my only gripe with Uber is taken care of as you can make a booking in advance as well. 
 
TaxiForSure 
 The latest entrant in the market, TaxiForSure, intends to bring affordable <keyword id="160739" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="cab-service">cab service</keyword> to the masses, with fares that are slightly less than the options above. Available in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Delhi NCR, Ahmedabad, and Baroda, the service offers the option of a hatchback or sedan in most cities. 
 
Like other services, you could book a cab for a trip right away or make a booking in advance. However, the ‘right away’ is not clearly defined and there’s no way to specify an exact time. If you are making an immediate booking, you could be offered a cab in the next ten minutes or an hour later.

Book A Cab In India With These Slick Apps On Your Smartphone

The ban on plying of 27,000 diesel-run taxis came into effect today even as its real impact is likely to be felt only tomorrow, the first working day after the imposition of restriction. 
 
The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=supreme+court&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Supreme Court</a> yesterday refused to extend the April 30 deadline fixed for the diesel-run taxis for their conversion into <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=CNG&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">CNG</a> mode. 
 
Authorities in various locations today impounded diesel-run cabs plying on the local routes in the national capital. 
 
 
 
"Instructions have been issued to concerned authorities, including transport department, to impound diesel-run taxis plying in Delhi-NCR," said a senior government official. 
 According to <keyword id="66" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Delhi">Delhi</keyword> transport department, about 60,000 taxis are registered in the national capital and of them 27,000 are running on diesel. 
 
Around 2,000 diesel-run taxis had converted into CNG mode in the last two months. 
 
The SC order is not applicable on cabs having All India Permits but most of the diesel cabs ply on local routes. The ban will essentially bring down the availability of cabs in the capital. 
 
"As per rule, taxis having All India permit are required to cover a distance of around 200 km. Taxis having All India permits cannot ply from one point to other point inside Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad," the official said. 
 Cabs going off roads may inconvenience thousands of commuters as many <keyword id="3344947" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="diesel-taxis">diesel taxis</keyword> ferry people from Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon and Ghaziabad. 
 
"We can't keep on extending the time. We are not extending it now and not going to make any exceptions. There is technology available, you convert," a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice T S Thakur had yesterday said while rejecting the plea that it would affect livelihood of poor drivers. 
 
The bench, also comprising Justices A K Sikri and R Banumathi, had on March 31, extended the deadline till yesterday for conversion of all diesel taxis to CNG.

Ban on diesel-run taxis comes into effect in Delhi-NCR

Its war time for arch rivals <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword> and Ola. Taxi aggregator Uber, which has its headquarter in San Francisco, has filed a petition against <keyword id="6362049" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola-Cabs">Ola Cabs</keyword> in <keyword id="6355014" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-High-Court">Delhi High Court</keyword>, accusing the Indian cab operator of setting up fake riders accounts and misleading its drivers through fake calls impersonating Uber. 
	 
	Interestingly, the legal battle will is only expected to stir up the cab market that has been up for grabs for quite sometime now. 
	 
	According to the ET report, Uber is seeking ‘declaration, perpetual injunction and damages’ against Ola in the Delhi HC. The high court has asked Ola to respond to the allegations and has given time till the next hearing, which has been scheduled on September 14. 
	 
	As per the report, Uber has accused Ola of creating over 93,000 fake rider accounts in order to mislead the company as far as their sales is concerned. Also, the US cab operator has alleged that Ola made 405,649 false bookings of taxi rides and thereafter cancelled them to create frustration and disrupt business. 
	 
	Another serious allegation made by Uber includes accusing Ola employees of impersonating Uber employees in order to spread malicious text messages, thus causing damage to the business and the brand. 
	 
	But this isn’t the first lawsuit involving either company. ANI Technologies Ltd, the parent company of Ola, has filed a contempt petition in the Delhi High Court, alleging Uber of buying diesel cars to provide services, which if true, is a violation of Delhi HC’s October 14, 2015 order.

Uber accuses Ola of causing serious ‘damage’ to its business

Starting January, Delhi government would make sure that both Delhi’s traffic and the polluted air that floats in Delhi are kept under check. It would be done by cutting the number of private cars on its roads by about half, allowing private cars with odd digits as registration numbers on one day and those with even on the next. The Delhi government is also making sure that there are enough buses, autorickshaws and Metro coaches to accommodate the resulting number of people relying on Delhi public transports. 
 On the other hand, the brains behind taxi companies and car aggregators such as <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword>, <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword> and <keyword id="205081" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Meru">Meru</keyword> Cabs are already planning on steps to take the best advantage of this step taken by the <keyword id="260213" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Arvind-Kejriwal">Arvind Kejriwal</keyword> government. 
 Uber, for example, is planning to launch <keyword id="6591085" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="UberPool">UberPool</keyword>, its car pooling service, in Delhi after a successful run in Bengaluru. While Bangalore UberPool service is only meant for commercial vehicles, the Delhi arm would target the 28 lakh private car owners. 
 
Meru, on the other hand, will be launching a mobile app in January so that passengers can pool cabs online. "The app will identify two people within a radius of two-three km travelling in the same direction and can share their taxi ride," Meru CEO Siddhartha Pahwa told ET. "The driver will pick one person first and within 10 minutes will also pick up the second person." Meru, which is already running many cabs on Delhi roads, is expecting almost 30% rise in the demand for cabs during the trial period. To attract customers, it would offer 35% discount for ride sharing. Even if a passenger can't find someone to share the ride, he or she would still be given the discount. 
 
Ola, the taxi aggregator service, recently launched minibus shuttle services in Gurgaon and Noida, which they plan to extend to Delhi. The taxi-sharing app is being beta-tested in Bengaluru right now, and could very well be rolled out in NCR to make use of the odd-even rule. 
 
Delhi is one of the world's most heavily polluted cities, which is why the government has planned to launch this odd-even scheme. Starting January 1, a 15-day trial period would begin between 8 am and 8 pm, Monday to Saturday. As per the rule, odd-numbered cars would be allowed to run on odd dates and those with even numbers would be allowed on even dates. 
 
Home Minister Rajnath Singh has given his support to this the plan at a recent meeting he had Delhi CM Kejriwal. It means that Delhi Police, which comes under the control of the central government, would be taken on board to ease the application of this rule. 
 
To discuss a carpooling policy, fleet owners and taxi aggregators, including representatives of Pool my Ride, Embarq India, Tripda.in, Carzonrent, Uber, Ola, Shuttl.com, NearGroup.in, Ibibo Ryde, Mega Carpool Pvt., Mega Cabs, LetsDriveAlong.com, BaxiTaxi, Orahi and 
Cykul, had a meeting with the members of the Delhi Dialogue Commission, which serves as the think tank of the Delhi government.

Cab aggregators to reap the benefits of Delhi’s Odd-Even car rule

The Delhi High Court will today hear the appeal of <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword> and <keyword id="6362049" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ola-Cabs">Ola Cabs</keyword> against the ban imposed on them by Delhi’s <keyword id="62110" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="transport-department">Transport Department</keyword>. On January 1, the Transport Department had refused to lift the ban, saying “there are no grounds to review the ban imposed.” 
 
The Delhi government had banned all web-based taxi operators in December last year after a taxi driver working with Uber allegedly raped a woman. Uber and Ola had approached the Delhi High Court requesting quashing of the ban orders. 
 
The Transport Department had said in its order: "They (web-based taxi operators) provide a simple taxi service by transporting people from one point to another through a vehicle driven by a driver for a fee, which is collected by the petitioner company directly from the passenger. Being a taxi service provider they are required to follow the law of the land and by using an AITP (All India Tourist Permit) taxi for local point to point drop, as in the present case, the petitioner has violated the prevailing law of the land and as it was not registered, which again was a violation.”
