Bloomberg reported that the US-based company explored selling the India business, but "suspended discussions after tech startup valuations cratered." In a statement shared with IANS, an Uber spokesperson said the company never explored exiting India -- not even for a minute -- and the report is "categorically false." "India is as important to Uber today as it was when we launched nine years ago. We are serving riders and drivers across more than 100 cities, hiring Indian talent aggressively, and planning for the next decade and beyond," the company spokesperson said. Uber competes with SoftBank-backed <keyword id="6354720" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ola" source="Orion">Ola</keyword> in the country. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in April that it will expand its product offerings and its team in India. "We continue to expand the product offerings for the Indian consumer. The CCPA has received numerous complaints of unfair trading practices, such as cab drivers forcing riders to cancel trips that result in the customers paying the cancellation charge. The authority is of the view that old customers are being charged exorbitant rates while new riders are being wooed by low fares for the same distance. Despite the Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines 2020, 71 per cent customers say that ride cancellation issues by drivers continue, according to a survey by community-based social media platform LocalCircles last month. Over 45 per cent of app-based taxi consumers stated they were charged more than 1.5 times in surge pricing despite the threshold being set by the Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines 2020. The extortionist practices of some drivers to undertake private trips were reported by consumers as a major concern, the report said. Uber hikes fare across the country, starts showing destination and payment mode to drivers before they accept the trip

You must have by now heard about Ola and Uber planning to raise their fares. This comes as real bad news for all the commuters who had started relying heavily on Ola and Uber taxis for their daily commute, owing to their economical pricing over the exorbitant fares charged by local taxis and autos. However, it seems commute is going to be a big problem all over again. 
 
Both cab aggregators have announced they are increasing their prices in the lowest category of cabs - the bracket used mostly by the middle and upper- middle class commuters. 
 
In Delhi, where Ola was charging Rs 6 per km apart from the base fare of Rs 40 for its Micro cabs, it will now be charging almost double - Rs 12 per km after the first 20 km. 
 
Same is the case with Uber. In Delhi for instance, an UberGo commuter will now have to pay Rs 12 per km after the initial 20 km against Rs 6 per km they were paying before. 
 
In Pune, the cost has been fixed at Rs 15 per kilometre for UberGo rides beyond the first 15 km. For Vizag it’s Rs 12 per kilometre after first 15 km and for Kolkata, it is Rs 12 per km after first 10 km. 
 
Similarly the Ola commuters in Bangalore would also need to shell out Rs 12 per km as compared to Rs 6 all through the journey earlier. 
For Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, the fare scheme for Ola Micro is same as Bangalore. 
 
Both Ola and Uber have taken this move to earn profits, as per the news reports. However, this price war also poses the right opportunity for rivals like Meru Cabs to grab their share in the market. 
 
Interestingly, Meru is already giving discounts to customers. It has recently introduced Exactometer, a system where the rider needs to pay exactly the fare estimated before the start of the trip, to counter the disruptive fare rates of Ola and Uber. 
 
It remains to be seen how this steep fare hike will go down with customers, and who really will have the last laugh.

At first, he appears shocked, before replying, "Hell yeah brother, the more the merrier."The two-minute clip shows 36-year-old Kareem Rahma getting into a taxi and inviting the driver to take him anywhere of his choice. Rahma can be seen instructing the driver, whom he refers to as Vinnie, to "take me to your favorite place and keep the meter running." Vinnie suggests a Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant in College Point, Queens, which Rahma said he had never visited before. The video shows them eating hot wings together, chatting about their lives, returning to the taxi, and taking a detour to an airport before the video ends.The TikTok is part of a weekly series called "Keep The Meter Running" where Rahma makes the same request to different drivers in New York City, and goes on a tour of their favorite spots. His account, which has over 112,000 followers, has posted 15 times, with each journey split into several parts. A comedian said he spent $1,722 on taxi fares for a viral TikTok series where drivers chose his location, in a bid to spotlight diverse cultures

<ul><li><keyword id="97393" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Competition-Commission-of-India">Competition Commission of India</keyword> brushed off all the price allegations on the cab aggregators <keyword id="6354720" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ola">Ola</keyword> and <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword> stating that the fares are algorithmically calculated. </li></ul><ul><li>The CCI rolled out a 13-page order discarding the allegation on the cab drivers for setting a floor price on resale and the alleged <keyword id="6743176" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Price-discrimination">price discrimination</keyword>. </li></ul><ul><li>The cab aggregators furnished a model that shows prices are determined algorithmically and dependant on various factors such as the time of the day and the destination points.</li></ul>India’s largest cab aggregators Ola and Uber were under fire for their pricing strategies, but the Competition Commision of India (CCI) has ruled that there was no incidence of wrong doing. The complaint was filed against ANI Technologies (Ola’s parent company), Uber India Systems, Uber BV (Based in the Netherlands) and Uber Technologies, the holding company of Uber Group. The complaint included Uber BV since it establishes the contract between taxi owners and does the payments and incentive to drivers, said the CCI <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/cci-rejects-price-fixing-allegations-against-ola-uber-3137091.html">report</a>. However, the fair trade regulator, CCI <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Companies/8hX4pI24jsrMUjoAMzJxuL/CCI-rejects-allegations-of-price-fixing-against-Ola-Uber.html">turned down</a> the allegations against the cab aggregators on Tuesday in its 13-page order saying that the drivers charging algorithmically calculated fares doesn’t imply that they were in collusion among themselves. Also, complaints that Ola and Uber are imposing a resale price maintenance system (setting a price higher than the price determined originally by the market forces) on drivers and the alleged price discrimination were brushed off. The cab aggregators have been criticized a lot lately due to the manipulation in fares. In clarification to the claimed price allegation, Ola and Uber have published their model that provides insight into how the price is calculated to the CCI. The model shows that the estimation is done based on large data sets deploying respective algorithms. Further, fares of rides also vary as per the traffic conditions in the area and the time of the day, leading to higher price value during the peak hours. As a result, the prices determined differ specific to each rider by the end of the trip. While the drivers may have quoted fares higher than what is calculated algorithmically, which was the case with the current allegations, but that doesn’t necessarily amount to collusion within the drivers. The CCI reported that the fares are dynamic in nature so there did not seem to be any floor price maintained by the drivers. The dynamic prices also hold some advantage to the regular customers because this might also lead you to a lower price than usual for a certain places as compared to the ones charged by the individual taxi drivers, which saves you a good deal of money. The order stated that there doesn’t appear to be any such agreement or alignment between the cab aggregators and their respective drivers or drivers mutually.

Under the City Taxi Scheme 2017, cabs are only allowed to pick up and drop passengers from one point to the next. Currently legal provisions only allow buses to pick up other passengers along the route and make multiple stops. Even if individuals choose to pay more and opt for solo rides, the increased congestion on the road with more people using individual cars, will add to the time opportunity cost. The increasing number of cars on the road could also spell worsening air quality in New Delhi. <a href="http://www.who.int/airpollution/data/cities/en/">According</a> to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Delhi has 292 micrograms per cubic meter of PM10 particles. That’s double the amount in Dakar, the second city on the list. The effect on the companies themselves is a different story. Recent reports <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/uber-ola-enter-slow-lane-in-2018/articleshow/65927443.cms">indicate</a> that while the absolute number of rides have been increasing, the companies are now growing at a slower rate. Experts believe that one of the reasons is the focus on ride-sharing. The ban could either be good for the companies if customers shift to solo rides. Or, bad if customers choose to shift to public transport altogether or find other alternative means of transportation. Other issues on the table In reviewing the regulations for cabs in the Indian national capital, the committee is also discussing the issue of green fuels and permits. Possible outcomes include enforcing that cabs only use fuels like CNG or LPG and providing proof of parking before applying for a permit. The biggest development to come is probably the tracking of cabs. Currently, cabs in the city aren’t monitored as they pick up and drop passengers. But the committee is considering adding GPS monitoring to the roster, not only for cabs in Delhi but for cabs that are registered in other states while operating within the city. For actual customers, the issues of greater relevance are the ‘panic’ button that will soon become a mandatory feature in cabs and putting a cap on the maximum fare that companies can charge from customers. If the scheme also goes through with its plan of limiting the number of cabs that can be put on call by a cab operator, the demand-supply disparity might even increase the overall prices in the market. The committee, that includes the transport minister Kailash Gahlot and Satyender Jain, a minister at the Public Works Department, is currently reviewing the City Taxi Scheme 2017, Licensing and Regulation of App-based Cab Aggregator Rules 2017 and app-based premium bus services. Sources have told Times of <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> that this the committee is unlikely to rule in the favour of companies being allowed to operate ride-sharing in Delhi. They were originally supposed to come to a decision on Monday, but that has now be deferred to a date that is yet to be decided.

 The service was recently launched in India, and offers two tiers of cars for hire – UberBLACK and uberX – appealing to a broader cross-section of the market. The service, which has grown to 10 cities, is already making India the biggest market for Uber outside of the <keyword id="6356955" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="united-states">United States</keyword>. 
 You need to sign up using the app with your credit card (some debit cards work too). The app shows the estimated time of arrival (ETA) of available cars around you. Once you book it, you can track the reserved car’s location on a map and contact the <keyword id="6366401" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Driver">driver</keyword> as well. After the ride, the amount is debited from the linked card and you don’t have to pay any cash to the driver. The app also allows ridesharing, so two friends sharing a ride can split the fare between two seamlessly. 
 
Uber is a great way to ‘hail a cab’ via an app. But you cannot book one in advance, and that sometimes is a concern, for example: you don’t want to leave a booking till last minute for a 4 am flight. 
 
Meru Cabs 
 Meru Cabs is one of the most popular and earliest radio cabs service in India. The fleet service provides services in seven cities - Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Hyderabad, <keyword id="6354321" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword>, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, and Chennai – with two fleet levels, Meru and Meru Plus. 
 Unlike Uber, the Meru Cabs app is only needed for booking the cab. Once the cab has been booked and you’ve contacted the driver, you don’t need the app for the ride. Of course it’s good to have to check out route details and share <keyword id="154361" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="feedback">feedback</keyword>, but it’s not required. The meter is available in the car and you need to pay off the driver at the end of the trip. 
 
Also, the app allows you book a cab for a trip right away (within 35 minutes) or in advance beyond 35 minutes for up to 3 days. You can also check out you booking history from within the app. 
 
Mega Cabs 
 
Similar to Meru Cabs in service and app experience, Mega Cabs is also one of the early radio cabs service in the country. The only difference is that Mega Cabs does not have fleet/car options, and has a unified fare. 
 With presence in six cities – Delhi NCR, <keyword id="6354925" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kolkata">Kolkata</keyword>, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Amritsar, and Ludhiana – the company claims to be India’s largest taxi service network. 
 
Olacabs 
 
Ola is quite simply the Indian Uber and has quickly grown to serve 10 cities already. Modelled on the latter, Olacabs does not own its own fleet and partners with car rental services making their cars for hire available through the app. Like Uber, there are two fleet levels, sedan and mini, and even the referral credit is the same Rs 300! 
 
Of course, the Indian company takes care of lack of penetration of credit cards in the country. You can recharge your account to keep ‘Ola Money’ in your account for frequent payments, or pay cash to the driver at the end of the trip. Also, my only gripe with Uber is taken care of as you can make a booking in advance as well. 
 
TaxiForSure 
 The latest entrant in the market, TaxiForSure, intends to bring affordable <keyword id="160739" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="cab-service">cab service</keyword> to the masses, with fares that are slightly less than the options above. Available in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Delhi NCR, Ahmedabad, and Baroda, the service offers the option of a hatchback or sedan in most cities. 
 
Like other services, you could book a cab for a trip right away or make a booking in advance. However, the ‘right away’ is not clearly defined and there’s no way to specify an exact time. If you are making an immediate booking, you could be offered a cab in the next ten minutes or an hour later.

Ola, another SoftBank-backed cab startup, will launch in London just as Uber faces being booted from the city

After guidelines issued by the <keyword id="168381" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="ministry-of-road-transport">Ministry of Road Transport</keyword> appeared to impact the business of the US-based taxi-hailing firm <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword> in India, the company has now decided to take help of social media and online petitions. 
 Known as the <keyword id="3114129" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="City-Taxi-Scheme-2015">City Taxi Scheme 2015</keyword>, Uber has launched this campaign against Maharashtra’s draft rules for cab services. The campaign also looks forward to officially communicate its views to the government on the proposed rules. 
 
Shailesh Sawlani, Uber's general manager for Mumbai, says, "We feel it is critical for the people of Maharashtra, who have for years suffered in silence with poor quality transportation, to stand up against these regressive regulations and make their voices heard." 
 
Ola, on the other hand, prefers to directly get in touch with the government officials to resolve stalemates, according to some reports. Earlier, Ola had stated that "We work with authorities at all levels, be it central and state to resolve issues.” 
 
Uber, in the past as well, has taken help of online platform to fix issues with the government. In a similar move, Uber launched a campaign in January this year after the Delhi government banned its services following an alleged rape of a passenger by one of its driver partners. 
 
The company ran a campaign on social networking platform twitter with hash-tag #BringBackUber. Moreover, it also launched online petitions that received nearly 8,000 applications. The case, however, is now in court. 
 
Up until now, the petition in Mumbai has received around 24,000 online signatures. 
 
According to the draft rule issued by the Department of Home under Maharashtra government, a cab service licensee should have a fleet of 1,000 taxis to 4,000 taxis. Additionally, fare charged by the cabbies would be prescribed by the state transport authority. 
 
The conditions are not acceptable to Uber along with a proposal that asks its taxi drivers to maintain a feedback register and receipt printers. 
 
Sawlani also added that “The proposed scheme is a clampdown on consumer choice and freedom. It is equally important for commuters to let the government know that this scheme does not have smart solutions nor their interests at heart.” 
 
Turning down such online campaigns, a Delhi-based lobbyist for transport firms says, "The online petition in Delhi was not very effective mainly because of the timing, as it was done after the rape case. And second, there was a petition to change an existing law, unlike in Mumbai where comments are invited. Cab companies should work with authorities. It is not possible to settle all issues through the judiciary."

Here’s what Uber is doing to challenge the government’s guidelines

Leading cab-aggregator app <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword> has said that its riders in the US and in some parts of India will now get to see 'upfront fare', so that they can know how much their ride is going to cost. 
 
The upfront fare will be calculated based on the distance, expected travel time, traffic situation, surge and tolls wherever applicable. 
 
The move will also help the US-based firm address ‘surge pricing’, its only weak spot, which has earned it quite some wrath from users and governments alike. 
 "We moved to upfront, per trip fares--just like airlines and hotels--two years ago when we launched <keyword id="6591085" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="UberPool">uberPOOL</keyword>... So in April, we began slowly introducing upfront fares for regular uberX trips in cities across the US and more recently in India, with more to follow," said a <a href="https://newsroom.uber.com/upfront-fares-no-math-and-no-surprises/">blogpost </a>from Uber product managers Arundhati Singh and Dennis Zhao. 
 
In India, Uber users from the cities of New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Chennai have already started seeing the new upfront fares, and it would take the company a few months to roll out the features globally. 
 
The new feature would ask the riders to enter their destinations, so that Uber can calculate the fare in advance and reflect it before bookings are done. 
 
"Knowing how much a ride will cost in advance is clearly something riders appreciate: today uberPOOL accounts for over 20 per cent of all rides globally. And we now want more riders globally to benefit from this feature," the blogpost said.
