The company's Co-founder and CEO <keyword id="1702989" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="byju-raveendran" source="Orion">Byju Raveendran</keyword> will take a more hands-on approach in spearheading the daily operations of the company after Mohan's resignation, who will be part of the edtech firm in an "external advisory role". The move is aimed at streamlining the operations and positioning the company for "long-term success". "Mohan has done an outstanding job steering Biju's through a challenging period. We are grateful for his leadership and look forward to his continued contributions as a strategic advisor," Raveendran said. The company has now decided to consolidate its business into three "focused" divisions -- The Learning App, Online Classes &amp; Tuition Centres, and Test-prep. Each of these <keyword id="54698" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="units" source="Orion">units</keyword> will have separate leaders who will independently run the businesses sustainably to ensure profitability, said the company. Two-three years later, the percentage revenue they get from the US market could be sizeable. It would not be more than 50% or more than Indian market. In the long term, it may happen that Byju's is getting more revenue from outside India.” -- Devendra Agrawal, founder, Dexter Capital A dream so big, it may need bigger deals Acquisitions are usually done for three reasons. First, to enter new geographies. Second, to incorporate new services or products into business offerings. Third, to eliminate a disruptor that could be a potential threat to the company in the long run. “Because of all three reasons, Byju's will continue to acquire new players…,” Agrawal told Business Insider. The organic way of doing so, by building a team and hiring people, may actually take a couple of years. The inorganic way, by acquiring companies, can help speed up the process of scaling up. Madhur Singhal, managing partner and chief executive officer (CEO) at consulting firm Praxis Global, explained that the company’s expansion largely depends on how well the company develops an empirically grounded model of technology and capability that taps the market opportunity with cross-selling into customers of acquisitions they are making. “If this strategy comes right, it could result in bigger and faster outcomes,” he added. While the global market will make up a third of Byju's revenue, India will continue to be the biggest market for the edtech company due to the massive growth of its core product in two to three years, Kishore emphasised. The recent acquisition of the test preparation chain Aakash Educational Services, which has over 200 coaching centres across India, is going to accelerate the company’s growth in India as well. The edtech giant on Wednesday, July 21, announced that it plans to invest $1 billion in the North American market to accelerate its growth in the next two years. BYJU’s has flagged off its American expansion plan with the acquisition of US-based digital reading platform Epic, which focuses on kids under the age of 12, for $500 million. Epic runs on a subscription model that gives classrooms and families unlimited access to thousands of books, videos and quizzes. The seven-year-old American startup, founded by Suren Markosian and Kevin Donahue in 2013, has a user base of two million teachers and 50 million kids registered on the platform. The company claims to have doubled its user base from 20 million kids pre-COVID. Epic has raised about $50 million to date from institutional investors like Creative Artists Agency, Evolution Media and Reach Capital. This acquisition of Epic is in line with the plan that BYJU’s founder and chief executive officer (CEO) Byju Raveendran described in an <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qIe5VhDvJXU">interview </a>with Business Insider in November last year. <div type="ExtQuote" text="“It’s very different how kids learn at different level — at individual level, subject level, age level or grade level — so what we have done is that for a lot of these early-age group level we have used a lot of these movie-like or game-like interaction to make sure that they get interested in the subject. The company wanted to remove all the barriers between a book and a child, and help them find the right books so that every child will be excited about reading. “And so we've built this platform where children can independently discover any book or any content they like to read. The platform makes it a lot of fun to read, and a lot of 100 discoveries, new books, or kids love using it,” Markosian said. Last year, around one billion books were read on Epic’s platform. The offering was launched last month, with 11,000 female teachers. For this venture, WhiteHat Jr has also stepped foot outside of its traditional coding for kids offering to introduce Maths. WhiteHat Jr’s CEO and founder Karan Bajaj has been heading this vertical and will introduce other offerings Science, English, fine arts and music classes soon. Taking a step forward, BYJU’s has also launched its learning app featuring Disney characters to the US last month. The company had also acquired educational game system Osmo two-years-ago, which has now scaled about four-times, as per the pressnote by BYJU’s. Kishore further added that BYJU’s will be clocking in more than $300 million in revenue from the US market alone in the financial year 2022. Of this, BYJU’s Future School will be clocking in about $100 million+ in revenue, Epic would add another $100 million+ to it and Osmo doing another $100 million+. Notably, BYJU’s is currently the most valued edtech startup in the world and the highest valued Indian startup. The company has garnered the interest from marquee investors like Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative, Sequoia Capital India, Silver Lake, Tencent, Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB), General Atlantic, Tiger Global, Qatar Investment Authority and many more. The deal is valued at $600 million comprising cash, stock and earnout, Great Learning said in a press note. BYJU’s has also earmarked another $400 million to invest in accelerating Great Learning’s growth. The company will accelerate its organic and inorganic growth in India and across global markets with the $400 million investment. Great Learning is an upskilling platform founded in 2013 by Mohan Lakhamraju, Hari Nair and Arjun Nair. The company offers courses in data science and business analytics, artificial intelligence and machine learning, cloud computing, cyber security and more. The company claims to have delivered over 60 million hours of learning to over 1.5 million learners across 170 countries. Great Learning <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/news/education/great-learning-exits-fy-21-with-100-million-revenue-run-rate-12-million-learners-from-160-countries/article34357284.ece">exited </a>the financial year 2021 with $100 million revenue run rate. It had earned a revenue of ₹325 crore ($43 million, at current conversion rate) in financial year 2020. The Singapore-headquartered company collaborates with several universities including Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Northwestern University, National University of Singapore (NUS), four Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and more to offer degree, diploma and certificate programmes. It has over 500 free courses. Great Learning will continue to operate independently post acquisition as well. “Together with BYJU’S, we will be able to accelerate our progress towards this goal and meet the growing need for upskilling both in India and around the world. The matter, raised on social media by <keyword id="7035516" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="technopark-today" source="Orion">Technopark Today</keyword>, an IT professionals community portal, was escalated by IT welfare organisation '<keyword id="3399247" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="prathidhwani" source="Orion">Prathidhwani</keyword>' to Kerala Labour Minister C. Sivankutty. Employees and Prathidhwani representatives also met the minister on Tuesday. Apart from ensuring that BYJU's does not force employees to resign, they demanded a revision of the company's exit policy for its employees. Along with ensuring payment of their October 2022 salary on November 1, employees are demanding a one-time settlement of three months' salary, earned leave encashment, and full-settlement of variable pay. According to the employees in Thiruvananthapuram numbering around 170, Byju's, with its office located in the <keyword id="6400701" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="technopark" source="Orion">Technopark</keyword>, is planning to wind up its operations in the state headquarters. Sivankutty, in a Facebook post, said: "The employees of BYJU's app from <keyword id="3595624" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="technopark-thiruvananthapuram" source="Orion">Technopark Thiruvananthapuram</keyword> had come to see me. The employees have many grievances, including job loss. The Labour Department will conduct a serious investigation in this regard." UBS Group AG, part of <keyword id="349466" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="UBS-Asset-Management">UBS Asset Management</keyword>, will invest a total of around $300 million in Byju's, people familiar with the deal told IANS. The leading ed-tech company recently raised nearly $1 billion as part of its 'Series F' funding that included Baron Funds and Facebook cofounder Eduardo Saverin's <keyword id="3472137" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="B-Capital-Group">B Capital Group</keyword>. The deal size is also pegged at close to $1 billion. According to the report, the edtech company has a revenue-sharing agreement with Disney — which could range between 10%-15%. Byju's among world's top 10 education apps downloaded during lockdown

A 19-year-old man from <keyword id="1334" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="china" source="Orion">China</keyword>, who has been having memory problems since the age of 17, was diagnosed with dementia, according to a recent case study published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease. After conducting a barrage of tests, researchers at the <keyword id="2774996" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="capital-medical-university" source="Orion">Capital Medical University</keyword> in Beijing diagnosed the teenager with "probable" Alzheimer's disease. If the diagnosis is correct, he will be the youngest person ever to be recorded with the mind-robbing disease. The main risk factor for the disease is getting old, which makes this latest case so unusual. The exact causes of Alzheimer's are still largely unknown, but a classical feature of the disease is the build-up of two proteins in the brain: beta-amyloid and tau. In people with Alzheimer's, beta-amyloid is usually found in large quantities outside of neurons (brain cells), and tau "tangles" are found inside axons, the long, slender projection of neurons. However, scans failed to show any signs of these features in the 19-year-old's brain. But the researchers did find abnormally high levels of a protein called p-tau181 in the patient's cerebrospinal fluid. This typically happens before the formation of tau tangles in the brain. Nearly all cases of Alzheimer's disease in people younger than 30 are due to inherited faulty genes. Indeed, the previous youngest case - a 21-year-old - had a genetic cause. Three genes have been linked to Alzheimer's disease in the young: amyloid precursor protein (<keyword id="235499" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="app" source="Orion">APP</keyword>), <keyword id="16616468" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="presenilin" source="Orion">presenilin</keyword> 1 (PSEN1) and presenilin 2 (PSEN2). These genes are involved in producing a protein fragment called beta-amyloid peptide, a precursor to the previously mentioned beta-amyloid. If the gene is faulty, it can lead to an abnormal build-up (plaques) of beta-amyloid in the brain - a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease and a target for treatments such as the recently approved drug lecanemab. People only need one of APP, PSEN1 or PSEN2 to be faulty to develop Alzheimer's disease, and their children have a 50:50 chance of inheriting the gene from them and developing the disease, too. However, a genetic cause was ruled out in this latest case as the researchers performed a whole-genome sequence of the patient and failed to find any known genetic mutations. And nobody in the teenager's family has a history of Alzheimer's disease or dementia. The young man also had no other diseases, infections or head trauma that might explain his condition. It is clear that whatever form of Alzheimer's he has, it is extremely rare. Severely impaired memory At the age of 17, the patient started having problems concentrating on his school studies. This was followed a year later by the loss of his short-term memory. He couldn't recall if he'd eaten or done his homework. His memory loss became so severe that he had to drop out of high school (he was in his final year). A probable diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease was confirmed by standard cognitive tests used to detect memory loss. The results suggested his memory was severely impaired. The brain scans also showed that his hippocampus - a part of the brain involved in memory - had shrunk. This is a typical early sign of dementia. A brain biopsy would be too risky, so understanding the biological mechanisms of his dementia is difficult - and this case remains a medical mystery at this point. Cases of early-onset Alzheimer's disease are on the rise in younger patients. Sadly, this is unlikely to be the last such rare case that we hear about. New Delhi, Mar 11 () In view of the coronavirus scare, edu-tech major BYJU'S on Wednesday said it will provide free access to its complete app to school students till April.The announcement comes following advisory for schools to remain closed to safeguard the health of students. Students across classes 1-12 can download and access BYJU'S learning programs for free until the end of April, BYJU'S said in a statement.Students in classes 1-3 can access Maths and English lessons and students in classes 4-12 can learn Maths and Science concepts on the BYJU'S app. They can download BYJU'S-The Learning App and Disney BYJU'S Early Learn for free from the Play Store and gain access to the entire library of BYJU'S educational content, the statement said. Students with the pre-installed app (free version) will need to update it in order to access the complete learning content for free.Citing an UNESCO report, BYJU'S said education of over 290 million students across 13 countries will be interrupted because of the COVID-19 crisis.
