Prosus owns nearly 10% of the company and invested about $500 million in Byju's."We assign zero value to Byju's stake amid multiple legal cases and funding crunch. While all eyes are on <keyword id="2900267" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="byju" source="Orion">BYJU</keyword>'s much-awaited FY21 financial results that were set to be revealed on Wednesday, the edtech major has registered nearly Rs 9,991 crore in revenues in its FY22 financial results and its core K12 education business is growing very fast, top sources have revealed. In six months from February 2022 till July 2022, the company logged Rs 6,175 crore revenue, breaking all previous sales records, three people close to the matter told IANS. This is a substantial gain from its FY20 financial report, when the company registered revenue of Rs 2,434 crore with a net profit of Rs 51 crore. BYJU's investors were ecstatic at the company's growth in the core business in the recently-concluded meeting, sources told IANS, as the company logged 50 per cent growth (year-on-year) in its core K12 India business at Rs 1,205 crore, leaving no competition anywhere near it. After getting acquired by BYJU's for $1 billion last year, <keyword id="3406091" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="aakash-educational-services" source="Orion">Aakash Educational Services</keyword> (AESL) has transformed into a hybrid edtech firm, expanding rapidly across the country, which is one of the key reasons behind BYJU's FY22 success. Meanwhile, after nearly 18 months delay of "ironing out the complexities", edtech major BYJU's was all set to reveal its financial report for FY21. The company had received an 'unqualified' report from auditor <keyword id="6358918" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="deloitte" source="Orion">Deloitte</keyword> late last month. According to sources, there may be a substantial difference between the projected sales and the audited revenue in BYJU's FY21 financial results. BYJU's logs nearly  ₹10K crore revenue in FY22, tops estimates

India's most-valuable startup <keyword id="2900267" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="byju" source="Orion">BYJU</keyword>'s is facing larger scrutiny from the government as it has failed to submit its audited financial report from Deloitte for the financial year 2021 even after more than 17 months. Insider company sources told IANS that the report is expected anytime soon, may be next week, but the long delay has now alarmed the <keyword id="6376435" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ministry-of-corporate-affairs" source="Orion">Ministry of Corporate Affairs</keyword> (MCA). According to sources, the ministry sent a letter to BYJU's earlier this month, asking the $22 billion edtech startup to explain the delay in filing its audit report for FY21. The IPO-bound BYJU's, according to sources privy to the development, has completed the consolidation of businesses after "ironing out the complexities" as the edtech unicorn made at least 10 acquisitions for a cumulative transaction value of about $2.5 billion last year. According to them, there are "no compliance issues" as the company has filed its FY21 tax returns in the "due diligent manner". BYJU's did not comment on the latest development. In July, <keyword id="1575" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="congress" source="Orion">Congress</keyword> MP Karti P. Chidambaram shot off a letter to the <keyword id="107956" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="serious-fraud-investigation-office" source="Orion">Serious Fraud Investigation Office</keyword> (SFIO) to investigate the finances of edtech major BYJU's. Chidambaram called for a probe into BYJU's for not filing its 2020-21 (FY21) financial results, which the company had earlier stated to file by July 15, saying that it has yet to secure $250 million (around Rs 2,500 crore) capital from its most recent funding round in March. The company, which faced intense scrutiny in the past couple of months over several issues ranging from delayed audit and layoffs, made multiple acquisitions in FY21 and each of these acquisitions had a different accounting style and year. So far, BYJU's has raised over $6 billion in funding, and aims to file an IPO in the US through the <keyword id="6767232" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="special-purpose-acquisition-company" source="Orion">Special Purpose Acquisition Company</keyword> (SPAC) route. The company is also reportedly in talks to raise another $1 billion as it expands globally. According to reports, BYJU's is eyeing Nasdaq-listed American edtech company, 2U, for nearly $1 billion at $15 a share. BYJU’s comes under govt scrutiny for not filing financial data for FY21

BYJU's acquired Delhi-based offline test preparatory services provider <keyword id="6380190" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="aakash" source="Orion">Aakash</keyword> for $1 billion last year. The company was reacting to reports that Blackstone and other shareholders of Aakash are yet to be paid in both cash and stock as it has deferred the payment. A company spokesperson told IANS that the acquisition of "Aakash is fully on track and all payments are expected to be completed by the agreed upon date, i.e., August 2022". "Aakash is our most successful acquisition till date and we are very proud to have them in our fold," the company spokesperson added. "Along with all our group companies, we continue to be perfectly poised to provide access to quality education in all learning segments from early learning to exam prep and career success, the spokesperson said. Aakash Educational Services provides test preparation services for medical and engineering entrance exams, school/board exams, and other exams via Aakash Centres. The edtech unicorn made at least 10 acquisitions for a cumulative transaction value of about $2.5 billion last year. The latest development at BYJU's comes as the Indian edtech market is shrinking with reopening of schools, colleges and physical tuition centres. Led by the edtech platforms like Unacademy, <keyword id="8080458" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="whitehat-jr" source="Orion">WhiteHat Jr</keyword>, <keyword id="2016957" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="vedantu" source="Orion">Vedantu</keyword>, FrontRow, Udayy, Lido Learning and others, over 10,000 start-up employees have been laid off in the country. In April, Unacademy laid off nearly 600 employees, contractual workers and educators, about 10 per cent of its 6,000-strong workforce across the group. Byju's says Aakash acquisition on track after reports that it has failed to pay  up

The edtech giant on Wednesday, July 21, announced that it plans to invest $1 billion in the North American market to accelerate its growth in the next two years. BYJU’s has flagged off its American expansion plan with the acquisition of US-based digital reading platform Epic, which focuses on kids under the age of 12, for $500 million. Epic runs on a subscription model that gives classrooms and families unlimited access to thousands of books, videos and quizzes. The seven-year-old American startup, founded by Suren Markosian and Kevin Donahue in 2013, has a user base of two million teachers and 50 million kids registered on the platform. The company claims to have doubled its user base from 20 million kids pre-COVID. Epic has raised about $50 million to date from institutional investors like Creative Artists Agency, Evolution Media and Reach Capital. This acquisition of Epic is in line with the plan that BYJU’s founder and chief executive officer (CEO) Byju Raveendran described in an <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qIe5VhDvJXU">interview </a>with Business Insider in November last year. <div type="ExtQuote" text="“It’s very different how kids learn at different level — at individual level, subject level, age level or grade level — so what we have done is that for a lot of these early-age group level we have used a lot of these movie-like or game-like interaction to make sure that they get interested in the subject. The company wanted to remove all the barriers between a book and a child, and help them find the right books so that every child will be excited about reading. “And so we've built this platform where children can independently discover any book or any content they like to read. The platform makes it a lot of fun to read, and a lot of 100 discoveries, new books, or kids love using it,” Markosian said. Last year, around one billion books were read on Epic’s platform. BYJU’s looks to go big in the US market The Indian business will continue to make money from the recently-acquired Aakash, which has a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/heres-why-byjus-may-want-to-spend-a-billion-dollars-on-acquiring-aakash-educational-services/articleshow/80243456.cms">network of 200 coaching</a> institutes bought for $1 billion in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/byjus-closes-its-deal-with-aakash-educational-services-for-nearly-1-billion/articleshow/81912772.cms">April 2021</a>. Anita Kishore, head of strategy at BYJU's told Business Insider that India will continue to be BYJU’s biggest market in terms of revenue due to the presence of BYJU’s core product offering in the country as well as because of the Akash acquisition. <div type="ExtQuote" text="Three to four years out, we would see about a third of the revenue coming from international markets," auname="Anita Kishore, head of strategy at BYJU's"></div> Kishore explained that BYJU’s is planning to focus now on the American market, as the USA is its biggest market outside of India. “The other advantage that US marketing gives us is the fact that it is English speaking, right? A lot of our products, while you know, they need to be customised, and so on. Given the language is English, we are able to actually scale those products well, with teams in India. Hence, the US has been a key market for us,” she added. The offering was launched last month, with 11,000 female teachers. For this venture, WhiteHat Jr has also stepped foot outside of its traditional coding for kids offering to introduce Maths. WhiteHat Jr’s CEO and founder Karan Bajaj has been heading this vertical and will introduce other offerings Science, English, fine arts and music classes soon. Taking a step forward, BYJU’s has also launched its learning app featuring Disney characters to the US last month. The company had also acquired educational game system Osmo two-years-ago, which has now scaled about four-times, as per the pressnote by BYJU’s. Kishore further added that BYJU’s will be clocking in more than $300 million in revenue from the US market alone in the financial year 2022. Of this, BYJU’s Future School will be clocking in about $100 million+ in revenue, Epic would add another $100 million+ to it and Osmo doing another $100 million+. Notably, BYJU’s is currently the most valued edtech startup in the world and the highest valued Indian startup. The company has garnered the interest from marquee investors like Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative, Sequoia Capital India, Silver Lake, Tencent, Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB), General Atlantic, Tiger Global, Qatar Investment Authority and many more. The company had reported a revenue of ₹2,800 crore in the financial year ending March 2020, as its user base crossed 50 million. The Bengaluru-based startup is looking to raise this debt through the Term Loan B (TLB) route, which is a term loan made by institutional investors whose primary goals are maximising the long-term total returns on their investments. Several institutional investors as well as hedge funds will reportedly be looking to invest in this opportunity. Industry watchers believe there may be more deals and acquisitions along the way. Investment bank Dexter Capital’s founder Devendra Agrawal, in an interaction with Business Insider, said that there is a lot of headroom for edtech to grow globally and there are few with the kind of muscle that Byju's ⁠— with a valuation of $16.5 billion ⁠— has. Two-three years later, the percentage revenue they get from the US market could be sizeable. It would not be more than 50% or more than Indian market. First, to enter new geographies. Second, to incorporate new services or products into business offerings. Third, to eliminate a disruptor that could be a potential threat to the company in the long run. “Because of all three reasons, Byju's will continue to acquire new players…,” Agrawal told Business Insider. The organic way of doing so, by building a team and hiring people, may actually take a couple of years. The inorganic way, by acquiring companies, can help speed up the process of scaling up. Madhur Singhal, managing partner and chief executive officer (CEO) at consulting firm Praxis Global, explained that the company’s expansion largely depends on how well the company develops an empirically grounded model of technology and capability that taps the market opportunity with cross-selling into customers of acquisitions they are making. “If this strategy comes right, it could result in bigger and faster outcomes,” he added. While the global market will make up a third of Byju's revenue, India will continue to be the biggest market for the edtech company due to the massive growth of its core product in two to three years, Kishore emphasised. The recent acquisition of the test preparation chain Aakash Educational Services, which has over 200 coaching centres across India, is going to accelerate the company’s growth in India as well. On top of it, its results for most of the months for the current fiscal year are delayed again. Sources told IANS that the company, which has sacked thousands of employees to date and has taken deeper cuts, is still unable to achieve profitability at group level amid mounting losses. In October after firing 2,500 employees and consolidating its business in the country, Mrinal Mohit, CEO, BYJU'S India business, had said that "these measures will help us achieve profitability in the defined time frame of March 2023". At a group level, BYJU's had said its top priority is to achieve "overall profitability by March 2023". However, this appears impossible now with the company still struggling to stem growing losses. Last week, the edtech major laid off another 15 per cent of its employees, or more than 1,000 people, mainly from its engineering teams, as the company continues phased layoffs to remain growth-oriented in a global economic meltdown. Between April-July 2022, the company logged a revenue of Rs 4,530 crore. Post that, there has been no communication from the company about the pending results. The edtech unicorn reported a loss of Rs 4,588 crore for the fiscal year that ended on March 31, 2021. BYJU's had claimed it clocked gross revenues of nearly Rs 10,000 crore in FY22. Meanwhile, according to sources, BYJU's acquisition of Delhi-based offline test preparatory services provider Aakash for nearly $1 billion is still incomplete and Aakash Chaudhry, Co-Promoter and Managing Director of Aakash Educational Services Limited (AESL), has resigned from the board. When reached, Aakash declined to comment. New reports emerged in December that BYJU's, which may have seen a definite erosion in its last market value at $22 billion, hasn't paid several of its vendors for months. According to Morning Context, "some of the payments are due since March and there is trouble with their clearance. In the eight months to October 2022, cumulative dues to vendors have crossed Rs 90 crore". When reached, BYJU's had not offered a comment on this report. In seemingly fresh trouble for BYJU's, some lenders had asked the edtech unicorn to repay part of a $1.2 billion <keyword id="6360217" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="loan" source="Orion">loan</keyword> they recently bought into as they renegotiate terms of the debt.
