Then, you can give the stove-top a more thorough cleaning once a week or so depending on how often you cook.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The best product for cleaning a stove-top depends on the surface material: baked paint or porcelain enamel, ceramic (often called a glass cooktop), or stainless steel. <ul class="summary-list"><li>A <keyword id="6762469" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="TikTok">TikTok</keyword> showing the "worst apartment" in New York City has gone viral.</li><li>With a mini-fridge, a communal bathroom, and no stove, it's asking $1,650 a month.</li><li>According to the realtor who posted it on TikTok, the apartment is located on a "beautiful street."</li></ul><p>New York City's <a href="https://www.insider.com/new-york-city-apartment-sales-fall-landlords-face-new-rules-2020-1">famously competitive real-estate market</a> has a breakout star this week: a $1,650-a-month apartment without a stove or a bathroom. </p><p>Realtor Cameron Knowlton gave his <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-tiktokers-new-tiktok-accounts-to-follow-in-2021-2020-12">TikTok</a> followers <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@newyorkcityrealtor/video/6922200627619712262">a virtual tour</a> of the space in a two-part video series. He calls it "the worst apartment [he's] ever seen" in the first clip. </p><p>In the first video, which has 20.5 million views at the time of writing, Knowlton opens the door to show a narrow living space that doubles as a bedroom.</p><div type="image" title="apartment tour" height="1426" width="802" msid="80660222" hostid="261"></div><p>Knowlton flips the camera around to show the minimal counter space by the front door. He notes that you'll have to share these with other people in the building and that the toilet area doesn't have a sink. </p><p>"Bathroom is Starbucks 3 blocks away," one person joked in the comments. </p><div type="image" title="apt_bathroom" height="1500" width="2000" msid="80660225" hostid="261"></div><p>"That's not an apartment. He said he found out about it through an email blast from the landlord and was intrigued once he noticed the location, Greenwich Village, and the price.</p><p>"I laughed originally. I mean, I kind of had an idea that something was up just based on the pricing," he told Insider.</p><p><a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9203015/NYC-realtor-shows-TINY-West-Village-apartment-costs-1-650-month.html">According to the Daily Mail</a>, the unit was last listed for rent in late 2019. The plan doles out <a href="https://www.democrats.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/inflation_reduction_act_one_page_summary.pdf?utm_campaign=Nexus%20Finance%20Newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;_hsmi=221448446&amp;_hsenc=p2ANqtz-_rYVKOck_JqOvKeFrIbrbT5IF7UMOyVe9zdKbTDFK_sRD-Vs9Ah4wqanaRimAtUeXm0XAoC66kQuGbWej-vkzsulKMuA&amp;utm_content=221448446&amp;utm_source=hs_email">about $369 billion for climate programs</a>, aiming to expand renewable energy such as solar, wind, and cleaner fuels, while making it less expensive to buy electric vehicles and home appliances.</p><p>The act is more than a year and a half in the making. In its final weeks, it wasn't clear if its climate plan would survive, as Democratic holdouts Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona prevented the party unity required to get the package through Congress. But <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/democrats-reach-agreement-on-inflation-reduction-act-schumer-says-2022-8?r=US&amp;IR=T">Democrats quickly united</a> to pass the bill after Manchin and Majority Leader Chuck Schumer struck a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/manchin-deal-on-biden-agenda-democrats-midterms-congress-2022-7">surprise deal</a> on July 27.</p><div type="image" title="workers install solar panels using a drill" height="1707" width="2276" msid="93379972" hostid="261"></div><p>Once it becomes law, the bill would put the US on track to cut its greenhouse-gas emissions by up to 44% from 2005 levels by the end of the decade, <a href="https://rhg.com/research/inflation-reduction-act/">according to</a> <a href="https://www.democrats.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/inflation_reduction_act_one_page_summary.pdf">multiple assessments</a>.</p><p>Experts say the new climate plan also promises savings, health boons, and higher quality of living for everyday people across the US.</p><div type="image" title="sun sets behind power transmission lines" height="1584" width="2113" msid="93332119" hostid="261"></div><p>"This isn't about the sky, or the polar bears," Jonathan Foley, executive director of Project Drawdown, a climate nonprofit, told Insider, adding, "This is about you and your pocketbook, your jobs, the air your kids breathe, the town you live in, our national security."</p><p>Here are five ways the new climate-change package could make your life better:</p><h2>Lower energy bills</h2><div type="image" title="woman stirs pot on stove under light fixtures" height="1440" width="1920" msid="93332121" hostid="261"></div><p>The new climate plan includes about $30 billion in loans and grants for states and electric utilities to adopt more renewable energy, plus more than $60 billion in tax credits for manufacturers of solar panels, wind turbines, batteries for electric vehicles, energy storage, and other technology, <a href="https://www.democrats.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/summary_of_the_energy_security_and_climate_change_investments_in_the_inflation_reduction_act_of_2022.pdf">according to a summary from Senate Democrats</a>.</p><p>Solar and wind <a href="https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2021/07/renewables-cheapest-energy-source/#:~:text=Financing%20the%20transition%20to%20renewable,major%20countries%2C%20the%20outlook%20found.">already generated cheaper electricity than fossil fuels</a>, even before oil and gas prices soared this year. Yet they still only <a href="https://www.eia.gov/todayinenergy/detail.php?id=46676#:~:text=In%20its%20Annual%20Energy%20Outlook,for%20most%20of%20that%20growth.">account for about 20%</a> of US energy use. The Inflation Reduction Act could speed up a shift away from fossil fuels and also make it less expensive to hook up your home with electric.</p><div type="image" title="wind turbine in a field of turbines against blue sky mountains in the background" height="1533" width="2044" msid="93332123" hostid="261"></div><p>A total of $9 billion in home energy rebates goes to helping Americans insulate their homes and replace stoves, furnaces, water heaters, and other appliances with electric alternatives. Homeowners can deduct up to 30% of installation costs from their taxes. A similar deduction for solar is guaranteed for homeowners and expanded to residential battery storage.</p><p>"This is really about delivering lower energy bills for everyday Americans," Leah Stokes, an environment and energy politics professor at University of California, Santa Barbara, said in a press briefing on July 28. She noted that high oil and gas prices are a major driver of inflation that ripples across every industry, from transportation to manufacturing to agriculture.</p><div type="image" title="two adults one child eat dinner at a table with paper plates and bouquet of flowers" height="1533" width="2044" msid="93332124" hostid="261"></div><p>"When fossil fuels go up, other goods and services go up," Stokes said.</p><p>The average household could save $1,800 on their energy bill each year by installing a modern electric heat pump and rooftop solar and buying an electric vehicle, according to an <a href="https://www.rewiringamerica.org/policy/inflation-reduction-act">analysis by Rewiring America</a>, a think tank that promotes electrification.</p><h2>Cheaper electric vehicles</h2><div type="image" title="electric pump plugged into the back of a silver car" height="1533" width="2044" msid="93332125" hostid="261"></div><p>The bill extends an existing $7,500 tax credit for new EVs — offered as a discount at the point of sale — and offers up to $4,000 for used EVs and plug-in hybrids.</p><p>It also lifts the cap on the number of tax breaks automakers can offer, benefiting companies like Tesla, General Motors, and Toyota that already hit the limit, as long as the vehicle is assembled in the US.  </p><p>"Once people own an electric car, they're going to laugh every time they drive by a gas station, when they see $5 a gallon," Foley said, adding, "I think this will help us reach a tipping point, where five to 10 years from now you won't see gas cars sold anymore, or very few."</p><div type="image" title="blue gas station sign shows prices above six dollars" height="1533" width="2044" msid="93332126" hostid="261"></div><p>There are some caveats, like your income, the vehicle's price tag, and where its parts are made.</p><p>If you earn $150,000 or more a year, or $300,000 in joint family income, you won't qualify for the new car tax credit. There's a limit on the price of the car, too. Bigger vehicles, such as SUVs and pickup trucks, must cost less than $80,000, and smaller cars less than $55,000, to qualify for the credit.</p><p>For used cars, the income limit is $75,000 for single tax filers and $150,000 for joint filers. The sticker price must be $25,000 or below.</p><p>The bill also requires vehicle batteries to be made with 40% of minerals extracted or processed in countries the US has a free trade agreement with, or recycled in North America. But supply chains for those minerals don't exist yet, <a href="https://www.eenews.net/articles/climate-bill-would-create-roadblock-for-full-ev-tax-credit/">E&amp;E News reported</a>. "Grilling allows you to keep an eye on it so that you don't waste your fillet. It's easy to do — you get that yummy, crispy skin, and those gorgeous grill marks." Don't have an outdoor grill? A grill pan on your stove works just as well, Ibrahim says.</p><p>But there are other great ways to cook salmon, like baking it in an oven. </p><p>"Cooking salmon in the oven is preferable if you are baking it in a sauce or broth," she says. "This will also help to keep it nice and moist, as salmon has a tendency to overcook if not watched carefully."</p><p>It's also incredibly easy to cook your salmon on a sheet pan surrounded by veggies for a quick, one-pan meal. "You definitely need to watch it to avoid overcooking," Ibrahim says. "In cases, covering it with foil is recommended, as is setting a timer."</p><h2><strong>How to choose the right type of salmon</strong></h2><p>It's always best to buy salmon when it's fresh, not frozen, says Ibrahim. And if you can, look for fillets that are wild-caught instead of farm-raised. That's not to say that farm-raised salmon is necessarily bad for you, but there are longterm issues with farm-raised fish that aren't good for the environment. Here's a good primer <a href="https://stanfordmag.org/contents/wild-salmon-vs-farmed-essential-answer" target="_blank" rel="noopener">on the effects of farm-raised</a>.</p><p>Wild-caught fillets tend to be pricier, but you can see — and taste — the difference. "Wild-caught salmon are eating what nature intended," Ibrahim says. "It's eating krill and algae and all the things it's supposed to, so it's higher in omega-3s and has this beautiful color." Wild-caught salmon is more ruby red, while farm-raised salmon is more on the pale pink side. </p><p>"Eating wild-caught ensures you're tasting salmon the way that nature intended salmon to taste," she says.</p><p>One thing to note, though — most salmon has pin bones, which are tiny little bones that can be dangerous if ingested. You can ask your fishmonger to remove them for you, but they're super easy to pull out at home too. They're spikey, almost like oversized splinters, so run your finger along the flesh until you feel the bones and pull them out with your fingers or clean tweezers. Just make sure to do this before you cook. </p><h2><strong>Cooking times for salmon</strong></h2><p>Unlike other fish, salmon actually tastes best when it's a little undercooked in the center — kind of like a good cut of steak.</p><p>"Truthfully, if you get really good, fresh salmon, you can eat it raw," Ibrahim says. That's why you tend to see salmon as a star on sushi restaurant menus. You can cook salmon all the way through, but leaving it slightly pink in the center ensures you're biting into a seriously juicy, delicious piece of fish. Ibrahim suggests cooking for three minutes on each side, though it might be more if you have a thick fillet.</p><p>And if you get a fillet with skin on it, try eating it. Not only does it taste delicious when crisped up on the grill, but Ibrahim also says it's full of good-for-you ingredients — like essential fatty acids, good oil, and added protein. If you have a fillet without salmon, though, it doesn't affect the cooking time. Just grill or bake it as you would without the skin.</p><p>And the beautiful thing about salmon? If you pick a good piece of fish, you don't have to add much to it. Everything you need to know about cooking salmon at home, according to a celebrity chef and cookbook author

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>IMDB</span></p><p class="caption">Sometimes it's worth every penny.</p></div><p></p></div></div>"Everyone has the same 24 hours."</p><p>It's the kind of thing I hate hearing because I start feeling bad about the fact that here I am eating a takeout quesadilla, while someone else is a CEO who managed to whip up a spinach lasagna for her family of five.</p><p>So I was pretty pleased to see an article in <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2017/07/uber-but-for-happiness/534711/">The Atlantic</a> describing a <a href="http://www.pnas.org/content/early/2017/07/18/1706541114.full">recent study</a> that found people who spend money on services that will save them time are generally happier than those who don't. Take that, Lasagna Mom!</p><p>For the study, which was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers surveyed thousands of working adults in the United States, Denmark, Canada, and the Netherlands.</p><p>Just over a quarter of participants said they spent money on time-saving services every month; those who did spent an average of about $150. And those who spent money on time-saving services - think paying for a meal kit service or hiring a house cleaner - tended to be happier.</p><p>The researchers also asked a group of participants in Canada to spend $40 on either a material purchase for themselves or a purchase that would save them time. Results showed that people were happier after spending money on a time-saving purchase.</p><p>These results jibe with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/people-are-happier-if-they-value-time-over-money-2016-1">earlier research</a> suggesting that people who place a higher priority on their time, as opposed to their money, tend to be happier. Even some of my former colleagues have written about how liberating it was to finally shell out for a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-best-money-i-ever-spent-was-on-a-housekeeper-2015-4">housecleaner</a> or <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sending-out-laundry-is-worth-every-cent-2015-4">wash-and-fold service</a>.</p><p>The really intriguing finding from the new study is that, when researchers asked 98 working adults in Canada how they would spend $40, <em>just 2%</em> said they'd buy themselves more time.</p><p>As Ashley V. Whillans, an assistant professor at Harvard and the lead study author, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/speaking-of-science/wp/2017/07/24/one-surprising-way-money-can-buy-happiness-according-to-scientists/?utm_term=.0d0b9ea65a95">told The Washington Post</a>, "People are notoriously bad at making decisions that will make them happier."</p><p>Because time is a relatively abstract resource, and money is more concrete, she said, "We always think we're going to have more time tomorrow than we do right now."</p><p>The takeaway here seems clear: Don't worry so much about hopping in an Uber, or ordering takeout Mexican food (ahem). You'll probably feel a lot better than if you spent two hours on the bus or three slaving over the stove.</p><p>That said, there are some important caveats. For one, as Atlantic writer <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2017/07/uber-but-for-happiness/534711/">Olga Khazan points out</a>, "low-income workers are largely the ones who provide these services, and they often can't afford them for themselves."</p><p>What's more, people who spent the most money to save time tended to be less happy than people who spent a moderate amount - possibly because they feel out of control.</p><p>So maybe don't outsource every single daily task - especially if you derive some pleasure from folding your own laundry or cooking the foods you enjoy. Science says you can stop feeling bad about 'wasting' money by paying someone else to cook and clean for you

You're forced to shop while you're in line.</p><p>I just didn't think the prices justified wasting so much of my precious free time grocery shopping.</p><p>And then one morning my boyfriend offered me a blueberry bran muffin with peanut butter on top, both items he had bought during one of his weekly shopping trip to Trader Joe's.</p><p>I took one bite and was hooked. Not long after I made a quick trip to one of the city's less-crowded TJ locations in the middle of a weekday. Lines weren't excessively long, I bought a fair amount of groceries, and didn't pay all that much considering what I had bought.</p><p>Ever since then I've been a somewhat-regular TJ's shopper. Here are the products that keep me coming back.</p><p><strong>1. 99% fat free blueberry wheat bran muffins</strong></p><p>I know what you're thinking: fat free blueberry wheat bran muffins? Bleh, those must taste like cardboard. Well, these actually don't. They're naturally sweetened with fruit juice so they're sweet but not overly sweet, and their individual size makes them great for a breakfast side or a quick snack before working out. They're best when heated up in the microwave for 10 seconds and eaten with a little smear of butter or peanut butter on top.</p><p><strong>2. The name is slightly misleading in that it's not crunchy because of peanut pieces; the crunchiness refers to the flax and chia seeds. So there's not actually a whole lot of crunch. The peanut butter itself is smooth and creamy, and it's only slightly salted.</p><p><strong>3. Reduced Carb Whole Wheat Flour Tortillas</strong></p><p>If you're looking to spice up your sandwiches and make them on something other than bread, try these wraps. They're small and only 45 calories each, so I usually eat two and fill them with anything from turkey and cheese to tuna or chicken salad. They don't take away too much from what's wrapped inside them, and you won't feel overly full after eating them either.</p><p><strong>4. Chocolatey coated chocolate chip dunkers</strong></p><p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.traderjoes.com/fearless-flyer/article/1812">Trader Joe's</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div></strong></p><p>Trader Joe's realizes that chocolate chip cookies were made to dunk into a glass of milk, which is why they offer dunkers. It's a long rounded chocolate chip cookie with a bottom coated in chocolate that's deal for dunking. By itself it's crunchy, but once you add milk, the cookie transforms into the perfect texture.</p><p><strong>5. Sesame Sticks</strong></p><p>These are great for snacking or adding into a salad for some salt and some crunch. They are pretty addictive, though, so buy at your own risk. </p><p><strong>6. Organic creamy tomato soup (low sodium)</strong></p><p>I don't eat soup all that much, because I usually find it to be way too salty. That's the beauty of this product: it's creamy and delicious, but it tastes fresher than most tomato soups because it's not overwhelmed with salt. Plus, it's one of the easiest products to "cook." Pour the soup from the jug into a pot and heat for a few minutes on the stove.</p><p><strong>7. Rice medley (brown rice, red rice, and black barley)</strong></p><p>This rice is even easier to make than minute rice. One box contains three individual packages that each contain one serving of the mix. Throw one of those packets into the microwave for three minutes and you have fancy-looking, perfectly-cooked rice.</p><p><strong>9. Butternut Squash Risotto</strong></p><p>The first time I made risotto, I decided to avoid the risk of screwing it up by making frozen pre-packaged risotto. Once you've microwaved the packet of sauce that comes in the risotto package, all you have to do is combine it with the rice and veggies and let it simmer on the stove, stirring occasionally. It comes out tasting creamy and flavorful, and not like it was once frozen.</p><p><strong>10. Then I tried TJ's salmon burgers (made with salmon from Alaska), which come in a box of four for $5.99. I found my mother's hideous, beige 1980s kitchen in a museum

<p>Shake Shack, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/why-people-love-shake-shack-2014-12">the world's hottest better burger chain</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/shake-shack-opens-for-trading-jan-30-2015-1">went public on Friday</a> amid a<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/shake-shack-opportunities-for-growth-2014-12"> rapid global expansion</a>.</p>
<p>Burger King is part of the old guard, one of the uninspiring fast food behemoths that is at risk of being disrupted.</p>
<p>For a direct comparison, we went to downtown Brooklyn, where the two share a small triangular building across from the Kings County Supreme Court. I saw the stark differences for myself on the day of the IPO - and yes, the prices at these two restaurants are comparable.</p>

<h3>The differences are striking. The Shake Shack's storefront is modern, clean, and inviting.</h3>

<h3>I visited the area at lunch time on a Friday and both restaurants were busy with customers. Inside the well-lit Shake Shack, I found the short and orderly line, cordoned off with retractable dividers. It took me only 4 minutes and 40 seconds to get to the front and place my order.</h3>

<h3>Inside the Burger King, there were an equal amount of people, but they were lined up in confusing and messy queue. Waiting to order here took much longer than Shake Shack: I waited for more than 11 minutes.</h3>

<h3>The kitchen in Shake Shack looked clean, shiny, and new.</h3>

<h3>The Burger King kitchen didn't look quite as clean or shiny, but it looked like your average fast food chain restaurant. After ordering, I waited for my food at Burger King for four minutes and 32 seconds.</h3>

<h3>Conversely, at Shake Shack, even though I was given this fancy buzzer wand, I still had to wait, along with a crowd of other hungry customers, for more than 8 minutes for my Shack Burger and fries. This was one of the only positives in the BK column.</h3>

<h3>Once I did get my food at Shake Shack, though, the condiment stand was fully stocked with anything I'd need.</h3>

<h3>I sat down in Shake Shack to eat my delicious-smelling food. The seating areas were light-filled and looked clean and minimal, with wood accents, lots of windows, exposed brick, and interesting art.</h3>

<h3>Burger had two floors to Shake Shack's one. I sat on the lower level, which featured darkly painted walls, somewhat outdated light fixtures, tiled floors, and standard fast food booths and swivel chairs.</h3>

<h3>Let's talk about what really matters: the burgers. I ordered a Whopper and a small order of french fries at BK. The burger, while a bit sloppy and flat looking, tasted like the Burger King burger I was used to. The patty was a thin, uniform shape and had clearly been previously frozen. It had that signature "flame-broiled" taste but sort of lacked flavor otherwise. The cheese wasn't very melted and tasted a bit of plastic. The bun was starchy but I do love those sesame seeds. It certainly was amazing, but fast food is like sex: even when its bad, it's still pretty good.</h3>
<h3>As a side note, my favorite part of Burger King used to be the extra crunchy fries. Seems like they've done away with that, in favor of these thicker cut steak fries. That was a bummer.</h3>

<h3>At Shake Shack, I ordered a Shake Burger and fries, the rough equivalent to Burger Kings' Whopper. The extra wait proved worth it, as my burger looked delicious. The bun was fuller and the patty had signs of freshness.It had clearly been cooked on a stove top, and the cheese was fully melted. Even the presentation was nicer, with a metal tray and wax paper.</h3>
<h3>The fries, however, left a little to be desired. They had a frozen potato taste to them that turned me off. I didn't eat many of them.</h3>

<h3>Shake Shack had other things to offer that Burger King couldn't, like alcohol for sale...</h3>

<h3>They even had a display describing the origins of all their ingredients, like the bacon for their bacon burgers,. The food was purported to be all-natural and sustainably grown. Also, you can buy t-shirts.</h3>

<h3>Burger King didn't have anything like that.</h3>

<h3>And, in case you think I forgot, I checked out one of the most important parts of any restaurant: the bathroom. Burger King's was a multiple-person bathroom which didn't look like it had been cleaned in a while.</h3>

<h3>Shake Shack's bathroom was a single-person room which was both larger and cleaner than Burger King's.</h3>

<h3>If you've read this far, it's clear that I had the better experience at Shake Shack. I know what you're thinking: you get what you pay for, right? The Shake Shack experience is nicer because they charge more for their products.</h3>
<h3>Here's the thing, though. They don't charge THAT much more. </h3>
<h3>At Burger King, I paid about $7.50. </h3>
<h3>At Shake Shack, I paid about $8.20.</h3>
<h3>Now, I know for some people, that extra 70 cents can mean a lot. But for most, it's a small price to pay for a better meal.</h3>
<h3>And, additionally, the Shake Shack meal was slightly healthier, with 960 calories to Burger King's 990.</h3>
<h3>So, unless burger significantly steps up their meal quality, or significantly lowers their prices, you'll be seeing me at Shake Shack every time.</h3>
