<ul class="summary-list"><li>Tech company Buildkite is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/work-from-home-remote-work-forever-boss-trust-employees-2023-8">fully remote</a>, making deliberate efforts to build camaraderie crucial.</li><li>Its all-employee gatherings emphasize fun activities like snorkeling to boost worker connection.</li></ul><p>The last annual <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-plan-corporate-retreat-successful-inspiring-team-building-2024-1">all-employee gathering</a> at the Australian tech firm Buildkite lasted three days and included snorkeling at the Great Barrier Reef.</p><p>The time on the water wasn't an excursion meant to break up hourslong meetings about company priorities. The snorkeling <em>was</em> the plan. So was cornhole and a game of toss the shoe.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/virtual-team-building-idea-lip-sync-2023-5">Team-building activities</a> on the job are nothing new. Yet fostering a sense of connection among employees is a deliberate and essential effort at <a target="_blank" href="https://buildkite.com/">Buildkite</a>, its founder and CEO, Keith Pitt, told Business Insider, because the company is 100% remote.</p><p>"The point of it was to be silly and to put people in different environments and situations where they could create new networks and pathways to people in the company," Pitt said.</p><p>Buildkite's zeal for zaniness — one employee holds the unofficial title of Dome, the director of musical entertainment — aims to drive workers' collaboration and innovation. Those are the stated aims of many CEOs when they call workers <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ceos-calling-workers-back-to-the-office-focused-wrong-thing-2023-6">back into the office</a> for at least part of the workweek. But Pitt sees <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/senior-level-job-seekers-quit-over-return-to-office-requirement-2024-5">hybrid's halfsies approach</a> as misguided.</p><p>"It's the worst of both worlds," he said.</p><div type="image" title="Keith Pitt" height="2736" width="3648" msid="110230852" hostid="261"></div><p>Pitt calls <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hybrid-work-here-to-stay-ceos-rto-remote-2024-4">hybrid setups</a> a "scheduling and policy nightmare." He said sitting in a meeting where some people are gathered in a room and one or more are dialed in from elsewhere can lead to people not hearing each other and virtual attendees missing out on what goes on in the room.</p><p>"In a hybrid environment, remote is always second class," Pitt said.</p><h2 id="5c7cea03-c84a-492a-9db1-aaff52f0068f"><strong>The connections budget</strong></h2><p>Pitt, 36, isn't anti-office. At age 17, he dropped out of high school to become a full-time programmer. He did the commute and wore a suit to work every day.</p><p>Yet in 2013, when Pitt, who lives in Perth, Australia, started Buildkite, it never occurred to him to set up an office.</p><p>The company makes a DevOps platform used by OpenAI, Airbnb, Doordash, and Slack, among others. Starting out, money needed to go to web servers, not rent.</p><p>Pitt said the 135-person company funnels part of what it isn't spending on facilities into "connection budgets." They fund the annual all-employee gathering and smaller trips throughout the year to let coworkers get on a plane, rent a coworking space, and collab IRL when needed.</p><p>The cost of the last in-person all-hands came to about 300,000 Australian dollars — about $200,000.</p><p>"It's cheap as chips," Pitt said. "Best money ever spent."</p><p>Buildkite also spends on remote activities meant to foster connection. There are virtual gatherings for doing puzzles or quizzes about music or movies. The company has held cooking events where it pays workers to buy ingredients, and colleagues make a meal together over video.</p><p>But for all the fun meant to boost camaraderie, Buildkite's culture is serious about working from home, Pitt said.</p><p>Workers are given a budget of 3,000 Australian dollars to trick out their home offices. The company asks new hires to take pictures of their setups to ensure they have a quiet space with a proper desk and chair to avoid ergonomic fails.</p><p>"We don't foster a work-from-the-couch, work-from-the-kitchen-table type environment," he said. "We encourage people to throw some paint on the walls, buy some plants, buy some new artwork, just to change it up."</p><p>Workers also need high-quality equipment: A poor camera or mic, Pitt said, is the digital equivalent of having something stuck in your teeth.</p><h2 id="eea3b67e-ddb8-41d5-9e6d-8d9cffaecc24"><strong>'It's easy to look busy'</strong></h2><p>Another way the company tackles remote work for an employee base spread around the world is to cluster some functions. Buildkite uses what it calls "timezone bubbles." So, for product and engineering, workers need to be plus or minus four hours from Sydney's time zone. For sales and marketing, it's the western US.</p><p>That helps to ensure coworkers are generally online simultaneously and not left waiting for responses from colleagues.</p><p>For all the work Buildkite has done to establish norms around having what Pitt refers to as 135 small offices around the world — one for each employee — he sees Buildkite's embrace of remote work as a long-term experiment.</p><p>"I'm eager to see how this thing plays out," he said. For now, it seems to be working. The company is on track to hire 50 people in 2024.</p><p>Rather than dwelling on where workers work, a big focus is on developing trust, Pitt said. He thinks one of the reasons some bosses are demanding workers be back in the office is because they don't trust their teams. But, Pitt said, "it's easy to look busy."</p><p>Pitt said building trust can be harder when people aren't face-to-face. Playing games with colleagues is the "shortcut" he's found to developing that faith in colleagues beyond completing projects together, he said.</p><p>That's part of why he occasionally gets workers together. After the last all-worker event, the number of employees who reported feeling more connected to their teams and the company more than quadrupled. Now, Buildkite runs employee sentiment surveys every couple of months. And when it dips below a certain level, the company will announce another gathering.</p><p>It's important to keep trust elevated because that's when workers do their best, Pitt said.</p><p>"Trust is a big part of being able to come up with creative ideas on things," he said.</p><p>And, Pitt said, if workers care about the mission, it doesn't matter whether they work in an office or from afar.</p><p>"People will want to do the work because it's fun and it's what they want to do with their lives," he said.</p>

You spend every day on set baking, recipe testing, talking about bakes, and eating them.</p><p>It can be emotionally and physically exhausting, but <a href="https://www.insider.com/trying-technical-bakes-from-the-great-british-baking-show-2020">if you're a real foodie</a>, you will push past the stress and really be in your element. </p><h2><strong>The unsung behind-the-scenes heroes made the experience wonderful </strong></h2><p>On screen, all you see are 12 nervous bakers in a tent, two intimidating judges, and <a href="https://www.insider.com/contestants-on-what-great-british-baking-show-judges-and-hosts-are-like">hilarious hosts</a> Matt Lucas and Noel Fielding. But there's a <a href="https://www.insider.com/contestants-on-what-its-like-to-be-on-bake-off-secrets">much larger group of people working behind the scenes to make this show happen</a>.</p><p>My family and I were so nervous when the show sent a crew to film my first "backstory" at home. We expected a strict and scary group of people with cameras but lo and behold, they were the friendliest crew. They made my first experience on <keyword id="11898468" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tv" source="Orion">TV</keyword> so enjoyable and easy.</p><p>Those moments where I'm waffling on about the inspiration behind a bake or recalling memories of my late grandad I wasn't actually talking to myself (though I have a tendency to do that, too). I was talking to a great story producer who was behind the camera asking me questions. </p><p>We also worked with a stellar team of pot washers, who cleaned up our (mostly my) messes; home economists, who made sure every ingredient we wanted was available; runners, who helped us with almost anything; and our "care bears," two lovely producers who looked after us bakers.</p><h2><strong>The show has given me amazing opportunities</strong></h2><p>I always dreamed of having a career in food, but it felt unattainable until <a href="https://www.insider.com/why-great-british-bake-off-bakers-wear-same-clothes">"Bake Off."</a></p><p>I am grateful the show has opened so many doors for me and led me to incredible opportunities that were unthinkable a year ago. I've cooked live on daytime TV in the US and UK, met Prince Charles, walked on a catwalk to open the "Bridgerton" premiere, and even interviewed for Vogue.</p><p>Most importantly, I've built a supportive community on social media who remind me every day how much I love what I'm doing. It's so rewarding to read positive and warm comments from my followers and see them <a href="https://www.insider.com/trying-technical-bakes-from-the-great-british-baking-show-2020">recreate my recipes</a>.</p><h2><strong>On the other hand, it was hard seeing someone leave every week </strong></h2><div type="image" title="great british baking show season 12 bakers sitting on stools in the tent" height="1019" width="1359" msid="92211340" hostid="261"></div><p>Even <a href="https://www.insider.com/bake-off-what-its-really-like-competing-in-week-one-2021-12">after the first couple of days in the tent</a>, the 12 of us bakers had become such a close unit.</p><p>Part of it is probably because we were in a COVID-19 bubble — for my season, which was filmed during the coronavirus pandemic, we all stayed in the same hotel and didn't go home between bakes for safety reasons. So we ate together, baked together, and even went on walks together.</p><p>It's a competition and <a href="https://www.insider.com/bake-off-what-its-really-like-competing-and-losing-week-three-2022">we knew someone had to leave</a>, but we didn't want them to. "Bake Off" is the least-competitive competition out there because we help each other and really want everyone to do well.</p><p>We even tried to pitch a new concept to the producers, whereby all 12 bakers stay for the entire season and collect a score at the end of each week, and at the end, the person with the highest score wins. They didn't buy it.</p><p>When each person left, it was heartbreaking. We'd huddle around their car, wiping tears from our eyes and waving goodbye as they drove off. At least we're all reunited now!</p><h2>The imposter syndrome is tough to deal with </h2><p>It was a dream to be on "Bake Off," but I didn't think I was anywhere near the required standard to make it onto the show.</p><p>I was more of a cook than a baker, and all I really knew was how to make basic cakes with piping techniques I'd recently learned.</p><p>"Bake Off" isn't just about baking, though. You have to be clever enough to engineer creations, imaginative enough to come up with wild designs, and collected enough to deal with the pressure.</p><p>The <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-the-bake-off-application-is-really-like">application process</a> was super intense with multiple rounds of interviews and a ton of forms to fill out, so I decided (with much encouragement form my family) that I'd apply three times. I thought that by my third attempt, I'd have more experience under my belt and a higher chance of getting on the show </p><p>But my first application resulted in a phone call from the showrunners and, eventually, I made it through every round of the casting process. I was excited but panicked because this wasn't what I had planned. </p><p>I was terrified of <a href="https://www.insider.com/bake-off-what-it-was-really-like-on-week-two-2021-12">how my bakes were going to turn out</a>, especially when I saw the briefs for the challenges. Anti-gravity cake, interactive biscuit toy, layered bavarois dessert surrounded by a Joconde imprimé – I didn't even know what half of these things meant!</p><p>When I arrived at the tent and saw the caliber of bakers I was up against, I called home and told my family: "I'm going to be home in a week." I felt so out of place and incapable.</p><p>My family helped me fight imposter syndrome by reminding me that I was there because I loved baking and that I should have fun and enjoy the experience. </p><p>During the semi-final, I experienced another bout of imposter syndrome. I felt like I didn't deserve to be there and was the weakest link out of the four competitors who were left. But again, thanks to my family's words of support, I baked as it if were my last time in the tent.</p><p>I ended up with a signature Paul Hollywood handshake, the Star Baker title, and a place in the final.</p><h2>Never, ever make a sugar dome </h2><div type="image" title="crystelle making a sugar dome on the great british bake off" height="288" width="506" msid="92211343" hostid="261"></div><p>I couldn't write this whole post and miss out on <a href="https://www.insider.com/shows-to-watch-if-you-like-great-british-baking-show">one of the most stressful moments in the tent</a>, could I?</p><p>Caramel Week's showstopper involved making a sugar dome, and I don't recommend doing so to anyone — not even my worst enemy. </p><p>It's very difficult, you don't even end up eating it, and you'll probably shed a pound of weight in blood, sweat, and tears whilst making it.</p><p>And if you feel like you want to ignore my unsolicited advice and put yourself through the horrors of making a sugar dome, then I highly recommend that you don't put it down on a sticky surface. It will get stuck and almost entirely break. </p><p>Been, there, done that. It <a href="https://www.insider.com/shows-to-watch-if-you-like-great-british-baking-show">did make for some good TV</a>, though.</p>

OnePlus also entered this segment recently with the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/news/oneplus-nord-ce-2-lite-5g-review-the-most-affordable-oneplus-smartphone/articleshow/91156308.cms">Nord CE 2 Lite 5G</a>. A cluttered market like this requires a smartphone to stand out and offer something unique. <br /><br /><keyword id="3185986" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tecno" source="Orion">Tecno</keyword> is the one alternative that shows up with some interesting products. I recently reviewed the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/news/tecno-pova-3-review-worthy-option-for-a-big-screen-gaming-phone-under-a-budget/articleshow/92340513.cms">Pova 3</a>. And even with its minor drawbacks, the phone did fit well for the target market - Gamers. The Camon 19 Pro Mondrian, however, is a mainstream smartphone, so the benchmark and expectations are of a tall order. So what's good and what's bad about this smartphone? I will tell you in my in-depth review. <br /><br /><strong>Price &amp; Availability</strong><br />Tecno Camon 19 Pro Mondrian is available in a single specification. Priced at ₹17,999, it packs 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. So let’s talk about that first. The smartphone’s back panel is divided into individual squares that can change color under sunlight. We have seen a similar trick in the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/mobile/vivo-v25-pro-review/articleshow/93615314.cms">Vivo V25 Pro</a>, but the execution here is more interesting. <br /><br />The all-white panel changes into a pattern of interesting purple and white blocks. However, once you put it out of the sunlight, it changes back to the original shade within a minute. Against what we saw in the Vivo V25 Pro, where the color changed unevenly, here it was well controlled. So, if you are interested in the Camon 19 Pro because of this particular feature, you won’t be disappointed. The back panel has a matte finish and doesn’t register fingerprint smudges. <br /><br />Now, let’s talk about utility and form factor. The Camon 19 Pro Mondrian sports a thin build with flat edges. The phone feels premium when you hold it in your hands. At 200 grams, the weight distribution here is also favorable, and it feels lighter in the hands.<br /><br />Other design elements include volume rockers on the phone’s right side and the power button. The buttons are tactile and easy to reach as well. The power button here houses the fingerprint scanner. A rare spec these days, it is always good to have the option to use wired headphones. Right next to the headphone jack is a USB Type-C charging port and a speaker grill. <br /><br />We get a dual SIM card slot on the Camon 19 Pro Mondrian. The smartphone supports 4G connectivity but misses a key ingredient – 5G. These specs align with the devices we see in the price segment. What makes the display interesting is the 120Hz refresh rate. I have so far seen this spec on the Galaxy F23 and OnePlus Nord CE 2 Lite 5G.<br /><br />The panel is fluid and easy to interact with, and it didn’t miss out on my commands. As one would expect, a 120Hz refresh rate comes in handy when playing games. I had some fun sessions of COD Mobile on the Camon 19 Pro Mondrian, and the display was working fine.<br /><br />To my surprise, we get an auto-switch refresh rate feature here. This allows the display to switch the refresh rate between 60 &amp; 120Hz according to the content you are watching. This is a bit choppy, though. While switching between web pages and the home page on the smartphone, there was a noticeable lag on the screen. I preferred sticking to 120Hz as my default setting to deal with this struggle. There was some battery drainage but nothing that would harm your productivity. <br /><br />Watching content on display is also satisfactory. I noticed with the default settings, the color tones were on the cooler side. But once I manually tweaked them in the settings, there wasn’t a problem.<br /><br />I watched She-Hulk on Disney+ Hotstar on the phone, and the experience was wholesome. The renders in a CGI-heavy show looked fine. Yes, the black levels on the panel are slightly off, but not to the point that it becomes distracting. <br /><br />The display is also fairly bright, and if you are watching content indoors, you won’t complain. However, outdoors it struggles a bit, and you have to keep it at peak brightness throughout the day. <br /><br />Complimenting the display is a single loudspeaker set-up. It is fairly loud and delivers decent audio quality. However, as expected, the speaker is blocked by your palm if you hold the phone in landscape orientation. Also, Tecno should have provided a stereo speaker setup, given the price. <br /><br /><strong>Software<br />          <div type="image" title="Camon 19 Pro Modrian runs on Android 12 out of the box" msid="95258271" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Camon 19 Pro Modrian runs on Android 12 out of the box&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div></strong>Tecno Camon 19 Pro Mondrian runs on Android 12 out of the box with HiOS Skin. I have also interacted with the OS on Spark 9, but the experience here was more stable.<br /><br />This can be attributed to the superior SoC. <br /><br />The core of HiOS skin remains the same. The smartphone comes with some bloatware out of the box, which can be uninstalled. But certain apps will stay there forever, like Hi Translate and Carlcare. <br /><br />Hi Translate is Tecno’s shortcut for Google translate, which can translate speech to text from different languages. It is good in concept, and if the speech is slower, it can detect the words accurately. Otherwise, it is a bit complicated to understand.<br /><br />Carlcare was another application which is confusing to me. The UI and animation on the application are outdated. It is supposed to help you identify service centers in your locality which it does. But the experience can be better.<br /><br />Apart from this, the OS is quite intuitive. The animations differ from what we are accustomed to seeing in the competition. You also get plenty of customization options here. From changing themes, wallpapers, and text color separately. I preferred the stock skin, but you can do that here if you like to give it your own flavor. <br /><br />I also liked the swipe-up app drawer, which organizes the apps alphabetically. It is different from what we usually see on smartphones. <br /><br />Google features like Assistant and Chromecast also work perfectly well on the device. And it uses Android 12 OS to the best of its ability.<br /><br />Overall, the user experience on the 19 Pro Mondrian is fun, with minor drawbacks. It won’t disappoint you if you are open to adjusting to a new UI. However, if you like the conventional look, you can skip this one. <br /><br /><strong>Performance</strong><br />Tecno Camon 19 Pro Mondrian is powered by MediaTek Helio G96 SoC. A processor that is now available in smartphones priced under ₹15,000. Like the Realme Narzo 50 and Poco M4 Pro. At this price point, Tecno could have provided a more efficient chipset. Perhaps one which was 5G ready.<br /><br />As I write this review, 5G technology is available across multiple cities by major carriers in India. And if the projections are right, we might see full 5G coverage by the end of 2023. This is perhaps my strongest gripe with Tecno, making the Camon 19 Pro Mondrian very difficult to recommend. Irrespective of its potential and performance. Either way, let me point out what works in favor of the device.<br /><br />Although a 4G SoC can deliver more than basic computing on a device. I tried gaming on Camon 19 Pro Mondrian. In COD Mobile, the phone provided me with HD graphic settings and minimal lag. It takes its sweet time to start performing in terms of connectivity, but once ready, the experience is wholesome. <br /><br />The phone, however, does heat up quite a bit after half an hour-long gaming session. And you might have to put it aside for a few minutes before jumping on to the next bout. I experienced this only with COD Mobile, though, and not less-demanding games like Temple Run. <br /><br />The 8GB RAM on the phone can efficiently hold lighter apps without hiccups for prolonged periods. However, when it comes to apps like instagram or COD Mobile, it refreshes the feed altogether. <br /><br />General tasks like emailing, web surfing, and calling seems smooth. <br /><br />I also ran a Geekbench performance score test on the device. An alternative is popping in an SD card that can expand the storage up to 512GB. However, I feel 256GB should be a standard at this price point, especially if there’s only one storage variant.. <br /><br />It packs a huge 5000mAh battery. In a week of usage, I charged the device every alternate day. This is after some long sessions of Youtube and an hour of gaming. If you are a light user, chances are you can stretch the battery to over 24 hours. <br /><br />The phone supports 33W of fast charging, which can be done with the bundled brick in the box. It takes about one and a half hours to charge from 0 to 100 %, which is acceptable given the performance. <br /><br /><strong>Camera<br />  <br /></strong>Tecno Camon 19 Pro Mondrian features a triple camera set-up and I was quite surprised with its day light performance. <br /><br />The primary camera is a 64MP sensor with phase detection autofocus, optical image stabilization, and laser autofocus. With the edge detection being off, especially in low lighting conditions. However, the images can turn out well if you consciously try it. It does its job well, and you can capture far-off subjects. However, if you are a content creator, there are more choices than this.<br /><br />The selfie situation here is favorable. The 32MP sensor can click some decent images. However, I mention in all my reviews that it’s not something I like. But if you do, you won’t be disappointed. <br /><br />The videos from the selfie camera are also recorded in 1080P resolution at 30fps. I tried shooting some videos with it. While they are good for sharing with your peers but it’s not of the best quality for social media.<br /><br /><strong>Verdict</strong><br />Tecno Camon 19 Pro Mondrian packs in all the necessary elements we look for in a smartphone. It looks good, performs decently, and the camera setup will satisfy many buyers. What makes it very difficult to recommend is the absence of 5G compatibility.<br /><br />This is a major tradeoff for most of the young and aware user base willing to buy a new device. So, who should go for it? The answer is simple. Folks in our family need a long-lasting device with wholesome features. The ones who can do away with 5G just need a stylish phone. <br /><br />

All public places are closed and citizens cannot leave their houses without signing a legal form stating their purpose.</strong></li><li><strong>Even the anarchists have stopped fighting the police.</strong></li><li><strong>Greece is home to hundreds of thousands of refugees, many of whom have no access to medical care.</strong></li><li><strong>It's a disaster waiting to happen - and the government seems to be aware it will not be able to cope.</strong></li><li><strong>Mitch Prothero, Insider's correspondent in Athens, tells us what it's like.</strong></li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul><p>Today, Greece awoke to the most stringent coronavirus lockdown it has seen thus far, with all travel outside the home restricted, unless you are working in essential services or making quick trips to buy food or medicine. </p><p>Greeks now require a government-issued "Certificate of Citizens' Movement"  - which can be printed from the internet - to show police if you are caught outside your house. The document only allows outside travel for six reasons:</p><ol><li>Going to the local pharmacy or visiting your doctor ...</li><li>Going to an operating store supplying basic necessities (supermarket, mini market) ...</li><li>Going to the bank ...</li><li>Moving in order to assist people in need;</li><li>Attending a service (e.g. funeral, wedding, christening) in accordance with the legal provisions in force, ...</li><li>Working out in a public place or walking your pet, individually or in groups of two, in which latter case a distance of 1.5 meters must be kept.</li></ol><p>There is a complete ban on large gatherings. Police are enforcing the curfew with helicopters and military drones.</p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5e78cdb10c2a6216224e7992-2342/screenshot 2020-03-23 at 143650.png" alt="Greece coronavirus" /><p>The interior ministry is publicizing the ban with emergency messages on your phone, via the civil defense system. The incoming messages are more intrusive than texts. Each one makes a loud noise and takes over the entire screen of your device. "Stay home, stay safe," they advise.</p><h2>The government is convinced that the disaster will exceed its capability to manage</h2><p>Greece shut down its parks, cafes, and schools on March 11.</p><p>After a decade-long financial crisis that shrunk the country's GDP by 25% - akin to the Great Depression in the US - the local infrastructure will be badly tested by any outbreak, let alone the numbers currently seen in Spain and neighboring Italy. We have some of the lowest rates of per-capita testing outside of the United States.</p><p>The Greek government appears convinced that the disaster will exceed its capability to manage. The official numbers right now are low: <a href="http://www.ekathimerini.com/250934/article/ekathimerini/news/coronavirus-deaths-reportedly-rise-to-17">Just 17 deaths and 624 cases have been declared.</a></p><p>But officials are <em>acting</em> as if the numbers are <em>high</em>, which suggests they're more afraid of what is coming than what has already happened so far. The government drafted 2,000 doctors and nurses to new government contracts - far in excess of the number of current patients. It's not clear how many ICU beds Athens has in total, but most people here estimate around 500. It won't be enough if the lockdown fails. </p><h2>Greece was facing a number of simultaneous crises even before the arrival of COVID-19</h2><p>For the last five years, Greece's public health system has been unimaginably stretched by an ongoing influx of refugees from Syria and the war-torn Middle East. About 150,600 displaced persons now call Greece home, living in dystopian camps on the mainland and some of the islands.</p><p>The islands are already on the brink of collapse. Lesvos, for instance, hosts a refugee camp named Moria which was originally designed to temporarily house 3,000 people. Yet tens of thousands have been crammed into it, for years-long periods.</p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5e718c89c4854046a133c922-2000/gettyimages-1212055600.jpg" alt="Moria refugee camp in Lesbos, Greece" /><p>The locals are furious at the Greek government's agreement with the EU to prevent refugees from leaving the islands after they arrive via boat from Turkey, on their long journey north.</p><p>Last month, locals took over much of their island, <a href="https://greekcitytimes.com/2020/03/02/locals-in-lesvos-dont-allow-boat-of-migrants-to-disembark/">blocking refugee boats from docking on the island</a>, and attacking NGO workers and journalists. Riot police were sent by ferry from Athens to bring the chaos under control. </p><p>The Turkish government has deliberately inflamed the situation. In an effort to bully the EU into supporting Turkey in its clashes with Syria and Russia, the Turks sent tens of thousands more refugees towards the border with Greece. Greek police clashed repeatedly with refugees and Turkish border guards. Vigilante groups of local residents formed militias to hunt down any refugees who got through.</p><h2>The refugee camps will be perfect breeding grounds for coronavirus</h2><p>In the last couple of weeks, however, silence has descended between the islands and Athens. Did the tensions suddenly stop amid the COVID crisis? I doubt anyone has any idea because news from the islands and the camps has now become a trickle: Journalists can't leave their homes to report in Athens, let alone Lesvos or Moria. Access to the camps, and to a large extent the islands themselves, has been halted for virtually everyone. There is a sinking sense of impending doom for the people stuck inside them - they lack basic amenities such as running or water or electricity, let alone medicine.</p><p>I spoke with a Greek doctor who has volunteered in camps around the country, including Moria. He fears the absolute worst. </p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5e718c81c485401a9f55d5f2-2000/gettyimages-1212055539.jpg" alt="Moria refugee camp in Lesbos, Greece" /><p>"It was a public health crisis for the residents of the camps, not just in Moria but all of them, of the highest magnitude BEFORE the arrival of COVID," said the doctor, who asked to only be identified as Panos, for fears of being targeted by right-wing groups for treating refugees. "As this hits the broader Greek society there's not going to be enough resources to save citizens let alone refugees. I'm not sure any of us can imagine how horrible this will be once the virus starts tearing through those communities. And as it does, there will simply not be any help."</p><p>The brutal irony, Panos explained, is that the chances are good that the arrival on the islands of riot police and right-wing activists, including MEP's from various anti-immigration parties around Europe, probably spread the virus.</p><p>"The crisis in February and March almost certainly moved COVID into communities that would have been much easier to protect because they're isolated in the Aegean," said Panos. "Now the benefit of that isolation has been largely lost and replaced with a dangerous isolation that will make it increasingly impossible to get people to proper facilities for treatment as the system begins to collapse under the weight of the cases just on the mainland."</p><h2>A series of raids by riot police</h2><p>In Athens, my apartment is in the center of two neighborhoods dominated by hard left and anarchist groups who regularly engage in running street battles with the police. The activists throw bricks and the occasional Molotov cocktail, and the cops shoot tear gas and rubber bullets back.</p><p>Things have become quite grim. It's a strongly pro-refugee and migrant area that had been housing hundreds of families without government assistance for years - until a series of raids by <a href="http://livingingreece.gr/2008/12/10/greek-riot-police/">the widely disliked Athens riot police, known by their Greek acronym MAT</a>, this summer and fall. Unlike regular Athens police officers, the MAT specialises in quelling unrest, often through violence of its own.</p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5e78cbdd2d654f1361650ec6-2000/2020-02-29t201451z3lynxmpeg1s0bmrtroptp4syria-security-turkey-migrants.jpg" alt="Greece Turkey Pazarkule border crossing" /><p>The anarchist squats - which had provided free housing, food and even health care to hundreds of refugees - were raided and shut, and the families inside them either made homeless or sent to closed camps around the country.</p><p>"I think the closure of the squats could lead to additional spreads of infections," said Panos. "They were housed, organized under the anarchists, now they're on the street hiding from the authorities or jammed into much worse camps and situations. The government couldn't have known this was coming but I will never understand the decision to take care away from volunteers and drop it on an already stressed, apathetic state."</p><h2>Greeks have fled the city for their family villages</h2><p>In the areas around my apartment - it's nearly impossible to draw broader conclusions in this most local of crisis - the streets were mostly deserted before the Monday morning curfew was announced. Tourists stopped booking AirBnB's in private homes. Greeks either stayed home or fled the city for the perceived safety of their ancestral villages. And with an economy more dependent on tourism - that is not going to happen in 2020 - than any other country in the EU, the post health crisis is likely to be exceeded by the unavoidable economic crisis that will follow.</p><p>I asked my local pub owner why the sudden crackdown had worked so well, in light of the Greek tendency to ignore the government. He told me it was to do with the ban on smoking in restaurants and bars. For years, cafes have ignored the ban. But now the government is enforcing it, to put some teeth into the curfew.</p><p>"It's the fines to the bar that stopped it," he said. "There's not a single bar in all of Athens that could survive even a fine of 1,000 euros."</p><h2>With tears in her eyes she apologized. They'd be closed in an hour. </h2><p>This morning on my way to pick up breakfast and a coffee, I walked past his pub. It has been shuttered since the afternoon of March 11. There's no chance of reopening before April 30. His losses probably exceeded 1000 euros that first week. It's the same for every cafe in Europe, but the Greek government started this mess with far fewer resources than the rest of the EU. I hope he manages but we won't know for months. </p><p>As I walked, I watched a police helicopter circle overhead. It's a common sight - the choppers track the battles between the anarchists and the MAT, using a small camera dome.</p><p>But there haven't been any battles for a couple of weeks. In fact, the streets are empty. The helicopter was flying over a major road that was empty of traffic for a dozen or more blocks. The emptiness made its rotor wash sound much louder than normal.</p><p>I bought breakfast from my corner bakery. It's owned by a husband and wife team. This morning the door was closed and I was handed my order through a window. They'd stayed open this far and I'd been making a point to grab as much takeaway as I could from my locals, trying to keep them open. But today the wife grabbed a second pastry and put it in my bag for free. With tears in her eyes she apologized.
