"I kind of just assumed that buying the luxury route guaranteed that they would have some longevity."</p><p>Dante said she considered shoes from several different <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cartier-van-cleef-richemont-winning-luxury-beating-lvmh-kering-2024-6">high-end retailers</a> because she was searching for heels with a fairly specific height. In April, she found what she thought were the perfect shoes at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ftc-sues-tapestry-capri-coach-michael-kors-kate-spade-2024-4">Jimmy Choo</a>.</p><p>But she said the shoes broke before the wedding, leading to a weeklong, frustrating experience with staff from the store.</p><p>Dante said that representatives from Jimmy Choo apologized to her for her experience on Tuesday, which a spokesperson for the brand reiterated in a statement to BI.</p><p>"We are proud of the quality and craftsmanship of our products and of our customer service, but it's clear we've fallen short on this occasion," the spokesperson said. "We have been in touch with Ms. Dante to apologize and do all we can to put things right."</p><h2 id="5b9751bf-245b-4234-8a01-1c1c66dd6c7e">Dante said she discovered the shoes were ripping at one of her bridal fittings</h2><p>The <a target="_blank" href="https://us.jimmychoo.com/en/women/shoes/aurelie-65/latte-patent-leather-pointed-pumps-with-pearl-embellishment--AURELIE65XKM081087.html?geoip=geoip&amp;updatePreLocale=true&amp;cm_mmc=GoogleUS-_-Shopping-_-Shopping-_-J00014336439&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjw1emzBhB8EiwAHwZZxa8AbT-EaP2lzTXmP4IDnIKFnoEj8cq3PxHYWaLHjdlKk1rGSXua9xoCFCsQAvD_BwE&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds">Aurelie 65</a> shoes Dante selected were 65 millimeters tall, made of patent leather, and had a pointed toe.</p><p>The pearl-studded strap on top of the shoe completed the look, which Dante said she loved because her wedding dress features pearl detailing. She also said she was surprised by how comfortable they were.</p><p>The shoes are listed for $995 online. According to a receipt reviewed by BI, Dante paid $1,085.95 for them after taxes.</p><p>Dante said she barely took <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/style/margaux-city-sandal-review">the shoes</a> out of the box after buying them. However, she brought them to one of her final <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bride-wedding-dress-regret-bought-dream-monique-lhuillier-gown-2024-5">wedding dress</a> fittings in June to ensure the dress was hemmed to the height of her heels.</p><p>"I had them on to place the bustle," she said of the shoes. "When I took them off to hand them to my mom — because I've been keeping them in their box in their dust bag with the stuffing in them — she was like, 'What is this?'"</p><div type="image" title="A side-by-side of a white shoe with a small rip in the point of the toe." height="1080" width="1440" msid="111349660" hostid="261"></div><p>That's when Dante saw that the leather was ripped in the crease of the point at the front of one of the shoes.</p><p>The tear wasn't huge. But Dante said she had worn the shoes for under five minutes, so she was concerned they wouldn't hold up for her wedding.</p><p>"I wasn't too worried about it at that point because I was like, 'Well, obviously they'll fix it," Dante said.</p><h2 id="93da82f8-4804-4814-91ff-ee1ca3d1ba49">Replacing the shoes was difficult, according to Dante</h2><p>Dante said she first tried to rectify the issue on the phone, calling the Jimmy Choo location where she bought the shoes later that day.</p><p>She said the sales associate she spoke to — who was not the same person who initially sold her the shoes — first chalked the rip up to "normal wear and tear," not seeming to understand Dante hadn't worn the shoes for more than five minutes maximum.</p><p>"It almost felt like I was getting a runaround," Dante said. "My concerns weren't really being addressed."</p><p>Dante told BI she then went to Jimmy Choo in person to speak with the salesperson who originally sold her the shoes because she would know more about the purchase. When she arrived, she said the employee didn't seem to know the details of her situation despite her coworker promising Dante she would inform her. She also said she could do nothing about the rip since Dante had technically worn the shoe, but she offered to speak to her manager.</p><p>Dante said the salesperson and her manager agreed to swap the pair, telling her it was a "one-time" deal.</p><p>When the salesperson opened the box of replacement shoes, Dante said she discovered the new pair was broken, too, as the fishing wire that held the pearls was detached on one side of one of the shoes.</p><p>"At that point, I kind of felt sick to my stomach because I was like, 'What are we paying for when we're buying luxury items?'" Dante said. "I felt pretty stupid for doing it in the first place."</p><h2 id="31a17b68-c6c4-4f5b-a22e-2a68a8efe731">Dante ultimately got a refund</h2><p id="31a17b68-c6c4-4f5b-a22e-2a68a8efe731">Dante considered buying a different pair of Jimmy Choo shoes but ultimately decided she just wanted a refund on the original pair.</p><p id="31a17b68-c6c4-4f5b-a22e-2a68a8efe731">She said the employee told her she couldn't refund the shoes without her manager's presence, promising the manager would call her to finish the transaction.</p><p>"It was kind of like a waiting game of hearing back from the manager, and I never did," she said.</p><p>After several days of waiting for a call, Dante said she called the store back to speak to the manager. Again, she said, there was a communication breakdown, and the manager was unaware of the details of Dante's situation.</p><p>"He knew that there was a damaged pair of shoes, but he didn't know that he was supposed to call me," Dante said, adding that the manager told her that her issue was not "really high on the priority list."</p><p>"It was just very unprofessional," she said.</p><p>Dante also said the manager didn't seem inclined to give her a refund until she told him she had posted a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@michaelarose123/video/7380492774849711402">TikTok video</a> about her experience with the store. The video she posted on June 14 had over 9.1 million views as of Friday.</p> <p>Dante told BI she expected better customer service from a luxury retailer.</p><p>"As a company, if Jimmy Choo is selling this kind of a product, they really should be providing some sort of an experience, and it wasn't like that," she said.</p><p>Dante said Jimmy Choo's president and the vice president for the regional sales team for her area called her on Tuesday to apologize for her experience with the brand. She told BI the brand also gifted her a replacement pair of shoes and a handbag.</p><p>"I felt glad to know that they understood why the situation was stressful and that they wanted to make it right," Dante said of hearing from the brand. "It seems like this really special thing to do, and I don't necessarily think that it is, which honestly made me feel better because it's like, 'OK, I'm not really missing out on anything.'"</p><p>"I thought there was a guarantee in designer items," she added. He documents his finds on his YouTube channel, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/@TheStorageGambler" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Storage Gambler</a>.</p><p>"I thought it looked fun, went to my first live auction and was instantly hooked," he said. "It feels like a treasure hunt." </p><p>But Chris said he had no idea there was treasure waiting inside a garment bag that had come with the $2,000 unit he purchased  — even when he saw the name "Kate Hudson" on the dry-cleaning tag. </p><div type="image" title="Kate Hudson wedding coat" height="1800" width="1440" msid="104732985" hostid="261"></div><p>"It didn't even cross my mind," he told Insider. The celebrity couple, who wed in Aspen, split in 2007. On Labor Day, she went to Goodwill with her roommate — her first visit to a Goodwill in the area — to find picture frames for a gallery wall, she told Business Insider. </p><p><a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@emmalifaith">Osterhoudt</a> was able to find the picture frames she needed, and she had already checked out when she and her roommate spotted a section marked 50% off that they hadn't seen yet.</p><p>"After we checked out, we wandered over there, and I was in the purses and she was over at the dresses," Osterhoudt said of her roommate, who then called her over to see the wedding dresses.</p><p>Osterhoudt said she wasn't expecting to find anything she actually liked. </p><p>"I thought it was gonna be like the '80s, poofy sleeves dresses because we've always wanted to reenact that scene from 'Friends' where Monica, Rachel, and Phoebe are sitting on their couch in '80s wedding dresses," Osterhoudt told BI. "So I go over there, and she shows me this dress, and it was so pretty."</p><p>Osterhoudt wasn't engaged when the dress caught her eye — though she and her boyfriend Nick had already discussed their plans to get married someday — but she felt so drawn to the dress that she decided to try it on anyway. </p><p>"It looked like it was my size," she said. When I'm on the job, all my meals are paid for. I receive a food stipend (usually of $50 a day) and then get to eat the free food at the wedding events, from the rehearsal dinner buffets to the three-course meals at the reception. On any given weekend, I'm saving money just by working as a professional bridesmaid and getting my meals comped. </p><p>While I'm not a big drinker, free booze is another potential perk of this job. I stay sober at the weddings I work, but I'm often given bottles of expensive champagne or wine as thank-you gifts from my clients. Some of my favorite trips have been to Las Vegas, Seattle, Los Angeles, Austin, Detroit, and Nashville.</p><p>While I do spend 75% of my time in these cities doing tasks related to my job as a professional bridesmaid, I'll spend any extra time or breaks exploring the town and doing a few unique activities that I've never done before: city tours, eating at a special restaurant, or visiting an attraction.</p><h2><strong>Constant gift bags </strong></h2><p>One of the best free things I get at the start of every wedding is the welcome gift bag that the client hands out to wedding guests when they arrive at the hotel. I love trying out new hair and makeup styles (when the client lets me) and enjoy getting pampered by the professionals. </p><p>On the occasions when the person getting married wants the bridal party to do their own makeup, or I don't arrive in time for glam, the client will often provide me with the exact beauty products that they want me to use so I match the other bridesmaids. </p><h2><strong>Helpful connections </strong></h2><p>An underrated perk that's come in handy over the years is the connections that I make working this job. I keep in touch with many of my clients, and that has allowed me to build a network of people all over the country. </p><p>Some of my clients are executives at big companies or experts in a certain industry. Over the years, I've turned to past clients for professional help (legal and accounting advice) and to help friends land jobs. </p><p>I've also maintained genuine relationships and friendships with some clients as well, which is a perk that doesn't have a price tag on it. "My mom was like, Jaime, if you get into Parsons, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/most-expensive-handbags-ever-auctioned-christies-hermes-birkin-chanel-2020-7">I will get you a Birkin</a>," Xie told Insider, referring to the exclusive Hermès handbag. </p><p>Xie is the 22-year-old daughter of billionaire Ken Xie, <a href="https://www.vogue.com/article/meet-jaime-xie-bling-empire-breakout-star">the Asian American billionaire who built</a> the first firewall and VPN. Currently the founder and CEO of cybersecurity company Fortinet, he previously founded Systems Integration Solutions and NetScreen, the latter of which he sold for <a href="https://www.cnet.com/news/juniper-to-buy-netscreen-for-4-billion/">$4 billion to Juniper Networks</a> in 2004. </p><p>Jaime told Insider that although she was born and raised in Silicon Valley, "surrounded by tech and Teslas," tech wasn't really her thing. She said she's been in love with fashion since middle school, when she realized Chanel and Louis Vuitton were much cooler than the Hollister and Abercrombie she had hanging in her closet.</p><p>So naturally, Xie wanted to study fashion business at Parsons, one of the top fashion schools in the US - she also really wanted that Birkin her mother was offering -<a href="https://www.instagram.com/jaimexie/?hl=en">it would be her first</a>, after all.</p><p>She got into Parsons (and got the Birkin), but she opted against attending, enrolling instead in the close-to-home Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles. About a year later, she dropped out to focus on influencing full-time. Now she has just over 300,000 Instagram followers.</p><p>Currently, Xie told Insider, she's making almost $100,000 a year from brand collaborations and partnerships. She buys her own clothes with her own money and was regularly attending couture weeks in Paris and fashion shows in Milan before the pandemic. She grew up like most teenagers, cooking for herself and her family as well as cleaning her own room. Her mother does the family laundry by herself. "We live like a normal family," she said. "I love this because it keeps me grounded." </p><p>She has plans to become involved with her family's philanthropic foundation and has recently planned events to help families that have been impacted by COVID-19. </p><p>Xie remembers the months before the pandemic hit very clearly. She had attended couture week in Paris, then went to Davos to see her father speak at the World Economic Forum. They went skiing in Saint Moritz in Switzerland, then Xie attended more fashion weeks and came back to California in March, exhausted. </p><p>"I was going home to chill, but I had no idea the chilling time was going to be this long," she said. Jobs froze for a moment during the early part of last year but began to pick back up in the summertime, and she was able to attend a charity gala with <a href="https://www.luisaviaroma.com/en-us/diary/events/luisaviaroma-for-unicef">Luisaviaroma and UNICEF on the Amalfi Coast</a> in August.</p><p>Her career as an influencer has only been slightly affected by the pandemic, she said, and she has been splitting her time between the Bay Area and LA, where she has most of her photoshoots, and where her first COVID-19 charity drive is set to take place. </p><div type="image" title="Jaime Xie" height="4824" width="3533" msid="80435777" hostid="261"></div><h2>Xie attended her first fashion week around the age of 17</h2><p>A competitive equestrian, Xie spent her high school years entirely online as she traveled the country riding horses. Even then, she said, she couldn't go a day without thinking about fashion. </p><p>Much of her fashion knowledge is self-taught, from reading magazines and stalking out fashion websites. It was Dior. </p><p>The brand invited Xie and her mother to the launch of its new high jewelry collection in Paris after Xie convinced her mother to buy a plethora of <a href="https://www.dior.com/en_us/womens-fashion/fine-jewelry/all-jewelry">joaillerie from the brand</a>. One day, they ran into <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/christine-chiu-talks-new-netflix-show-haute-couture-collection-2021-1">Christine Chiu</a>, future "Bling Empire" castmate, who broke the news to her. "When I bumped into her, she's like, 'Oh yeah, I'm here to attend a bunch of shows,'" Xie recalled. "I was like, okay, then in September I want to go to all the ready-to-wear shows, starting in New York." </p><p>Back in California, Xie was also becoming known in her friends' circle as someone with taste. </p><div type="image" title="Jaime Xie" height="4824" width="3533" msid="80435782" hostid="261"></div>"Jaime's sense of style is multifaceted," her close friend Mathew Sakhai, 22, told Insider. "She can go from girly and sweet to edgy and dark without making you think she has no fashion identity because you can see her mark in every look she chooses." <p>Xie loved - and still loves - wearing emerging and new brands, mixing them with heritage houses like Prada and Mugler. She loves vintage, especially from <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-gucci-louis-vuitton-became-two-most-valuable-luxury-brands-2020-01">Gucci, Chanel, and Dior.</a> "When I have free time, I'll just be browsing on Vestiaire Collective, eBay, to find some cool vintage," she said. "The thing I love about vintage is that it's something not everyone will have." </p><p>She also has some more affordable brands in her closet. Her mentality is that she'll buy anything and everything that looks good, "regardless of whether it's Zara or Chanel."</p><p>In fact, Xie said she was shopping so much during her adolescence and spending so much of her parents' money that they made her <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/seasons-menswear-rental-app-alexis-ohanian-nas-menswear-platform-2021-1">get a summer job</a> working at Nordstrom's when she was 18, to "appreciate the value of money." </p><p>Now she makes enough money to fund her shopping habits and career as a fashion influencer. </p><p>"People only see the glitz and glamour and the fun side of what I do," she said. "But what they don't see is me shooting outfits and working until 10pm and editing photos, answering emails, and responding to messages until 4:00 am." </p><h2><strong>Xie keeps it real on Instagram: </strong><strong>'Very casual, somewhat relatable' </strong></h2><p>During this time, Xie was also posting photos of her outfits on Facebook. She branched out to Instagram and YouTube at the recommendation of her equestrian friends, who felt she had a good sense of style. </p><p>On YouTube, Xie began doing unboxing videos - meaning she would unwrap her designer purchases in real time and show them off to the audience. Her page is a mixture of selfies, magazine photoshoots, and designer street style. "Very casual," she explained. "Somewhat relatable."</p><p>Around the age of 19, she decided to pursue digital content creation full-time, and now gets invited to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gucci-and-therealreal-announce-partnership-as-demand-in-resale-grows-2020-10">fashion shows around the world</a> as an influencer. She travels frequently between <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/emmanuel-tarpin-on-building-a-jewelry-empire-wowing-rihanna-interview-2020-8">New York, London, Milan, and Paris</a>. Before the pandemic, there was couture week twice a year, in January and in July. Then there was ready-to-wear in February and September, then other shows in between, like bridal weeks and menswear. </p><p>Xie said she used to switch outfits about five to six times a day "because you wear a different look to each show," she said. "It's a sign of respect to the designer." </p><div type="image" title="Jaime Xie" height="1150" width="1533" msid="80435786" hostid="261"></div><h2><strong>Xie had never seen reality TV before 'Bling Empire'</strong></h2><p>Lately, Xie has been thinking of where to take her career next. She wants to start a sunglasses line, and a shoe line is not out of the question.</p><p>She told Insider she plans on hosting multiple food drives around the Los Angeles area in the upcoming weeks, including one with the restaurant <a href="https://locations.earlofsandwichusa.com/us/ca/granada-hills/18080-chatsworth-street">Earl of Sandwich</a> in Granada Hills to help provide food for those in need, families impacted by COVID-19, and frontline health care workers. As a vegan, she said she's also willing to explore opening something concerning healthy living.</p><p>She never thought she would end up on reality television, though. Growing up, she never watched any reality TV, and she was the last person to join the "Bling Empire" cast when it went into development in 2018. When asked for advice on how to act on the show, she said the producers told her to just be herself and "have fun."</p><p>That's best summed up, perhaps, in the scene where the "Bling Empire" cast is on the beach talking to a shaman. Xie posed a question to the healer: what color <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bottega-venetas-pouch-is-the-hottest-bag-in-fashion-2020">Bottega Veneta bag should she get?</a> It was, of course, for fashion week, and there are endless color options to choose from. Sadly, the scene cut before the shaman could give her an answer. </p><p>"I ended up getting the mist color," she said. "And then I got a gold crinkled one, and then I got a light blue one with the Bottega Veneta intrecciato woven, and then I got a mini little gold one - it looks like a mini golden dumpling. Inside the world of 'Bling Empire's' Jaime Xie, the tech heiress forging her own path as a fashion influencer

I don't use it to create boards (I currently have zero boards), but rather, to look at my wardrobe differently. It may not be what Pinterest is intended for, but I think it's the most helpful piece of its platform.</p><p>It started in December, when I was planning on going away for a weekend trip. I had just purchased a new pair of leopard skinny pants, but I had no idea what to wear with them. I was sure I'd have to return them because "I didn't really have anything to wear with them."</p><p>In a desperate attempt to keep the pants hanging in my closet, I plugged a description into Pinterest's search bar, and the way I saw the platform began to change.</p><p>But before I explain, I'll give you the rundown of what I'm <em>not</em> doing on Pinterest.</p><p>When I sign into my account and look across the site, either at suggested boards or those belonging to my friends, I see a theme emerging. And if you've ever spent any time on Pinterest, you're aware of the theme too: Most all of these people are visually planning for the future.</p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Whether it's a board called "{new house}" or "&lt;&lt;10.17.16&gt;&gt;" (denoting someone's upcoming wedding day, and yes, the board names are almost always stylized like that), my peers and their fellow Pinterest users are constantly using the site to curate a life that are just on the precipice of living.<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p><p>There are, of course, elements of creating a Pinterest board that are wistful if not flat-out unrealistic - just pinning together a living room filled with expensive furniture and art can sometimes feel as satisfying as it would to shell out the cash to redecorate your apartment. Like walking by a bakery and trying a sample of a cookie rather than scarfing down a box of 24.</p><p>A friend of mine has lived in a one bedroom apartment in New York City for ten years with no plans to leave, but admits she has a Pinterest board called "country home" filled with hundreds of photos of barn house-like homes with rustic details.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>I am not planning for a "{{baby}}" or a "bridal.shower" - so how am I using Pinterest?</p><p>Simple. Each morning I pick one item of clothing I'd like to wear that day. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Maybe it's a chambray shirt, or a pair of gray joggers. Or maybe it's a flannel button-up, or a pair of denim shorts.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I type that item into Pinterest and add the word "outfit."</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><br /></span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">And there it is, right in front of me! Pages and pages of outfit ideas based on one item of clothing, taking all of the guesswork out of trying to put together an entire look. </span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">One of the most surprising things I've learned about using Pinterest in this way is that it <em>doesn't</em> make me feel like I need to go shopping all of the time. As most women can probably relate, it's hard to fight off the nagging feeling of "well I love this shirt I own but I have nothing to wear with it."</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><br /></span></p><p> </p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">That little voice inside of my head started to fade once I started getting into the habit of doing daily outfit searches. Instead, I am often reminded I do have most staple clothing items already - dark denim jeans or a black dress.</span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The outfit search pushes me to be more cognizant of all of the kinds of things I already own and all of the ways in which to wear them.<br /></span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span></span><span>When I first told a friend about outfit searching several months ago, she started using it to search her own closet as well.</span></span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>But nothing's perfect - w</span></span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">e learned it didn't work for everything, <a href="http://www.zaraterez.com/products/womens-emoji-leggings">like emoji leggings.</a></span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The outfit searches work best if you're searching an item of clothing that could work with a lot of other wardrobe pieces.
