Yet, from the Tatas to the Birlas and the Ambanis, top corporate leaders have always garnered interest from people who want to know more about them, their families, their wealth, aside from their businesses. More often than not, Indians turn to the biggest source of information on the World Wide Web, Google. Google’s 2019 Year in Search results shows that aspirational value of Indians with its top business tycoon leaders list for the year. Here are the top industrialists and businessmen that Indians Googled this year.

<ul><li>PE funds are now increasingly investing in <keyword id="114245" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="buyouts">buyouts</keyword>, cutting bigger cheques and snapping up larger stakes in target companies.</li><li>In August, $1.6 billion worth of PE transactions took place across 50 deals with buyout deals doubling in value compared to August 2017. </li><li>The share of buyouts - which are typically marked by a controlling stake of more than 50% in a company - has steadily been rising.</li></ul>For years, the story of private equity (PE) investing in <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> has been dominated by funding for early-stage <keyword id="6362513" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="startups">startups</keyword> and <keyword id="163960" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Growth-Capital">growth capital</keyword>. PE funds are now increasingly investing in buyouts, cutting bigger cheques and snapping up larger stakes in target companies. The share of buyouts - which are typically marked by a controlling stake of more than 50% in a company - has steadily been rising to reach $5.5 billion so far in 2018, which is more than double the amount seen last year and the highest in five years, Mint <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Industry/inMMRxN0yk5Yzb6QaLsKwM/PEled-buyout-deals-hit-a-record-55-billion.html">reported </a>citing data from Venture Intelligence. In August, $1.6 billion worth of PE transactions took place across 50 deals with buyout deals doubling in value compared to August 2017, according to an EY <a href="https://www.parthenon.ey.com/in/en/newsroom/news-releases/ey-pe-buyouts-lead-investments-in-august-2018">report. </a> KKR’s $530 million buyout of 60% stake in waste management company Ramky Enviro Engineers Ltd was the largest deal in August 2018. Other large buyout deals in 2018 include Kedaara Capital and Partners Group’s acquisition of Vishal Mega Mart for $734 million, and GIC and Abu Dhabi Investment Council’s $450 million in renewable energy company Greenko Energy Holdings. “The Indian PE industry appears to have come of age, with PE backed platforms attracting marquee <keyword id="89429" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Global-investors">global investors</keyword> like Berkshire Hathaway, which recently announced an investment of ~$300-US$400 million in Paytm,” Vivek Soni, Partner and National Leader Private Equity Services, EY, said in the EY report. Key drivers PE funds have had a good year in terms of fund-raising, increasing their ability to plough in more money in investments. As of the end of August, PE funds had over $40 billion in capital marked for India investments, according to the EY report. Given the tough market to raise loans via traditional banks, many Indian companies are also increasingly turning towards <keyword id="108089" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Private-equity-firms">private equity firms</keyword> for alternative sources of capital and have been willing to forgo stakes in part due to the operational expertise these firms promise in running business in similar sectors. In addition to available capital, PE firms also begun filling in the funding gap for many power and <keyword id="17408" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="infrastructure">infrastructure</keyword> companies that require large investments, or companies looking to divest ‘non-core’ divisions to shore up capital as they look to grow or turn around.

Millennials – loosely defined as people born between 1980 and early 2000s – already make up a significantly high proportion of the population in India and China. They are also the fastest growing customer base for many retail and services industries. According to <a href="https://www2.deloitte.com/content/dam/Deloitte/lu/Documents/financial-services/lu-millennials-wealth-management-trends-challenges-new-clientele-0106205.pdf">Deloitte</a>, global millennial wealth is predicted to more than double by 2020 reaching between $19 trillion (₹1.3 quadrillion) and $24 trillion (₹1.6 quadrillion) globally. But while many businesses have been trying to appeal to the hyper-connected, tech-savvy millennial population by investing in digital efforts, another equally important demographic, the Gen-Z, which comprises of the current 16 to 24-year-olds – is either entering university or getting ready to join the workforce, putting pressure on businesses to figure out ways to stay relevant to this demographic. By some estimates, Gen Z may even overtake millennials in terms of their growing numbers in India. According to a recent Bloomberg <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Politics/uP1RGLG2uiSX6Ei8BNM9jJ/Gen-Z-is-on-course-to-outnumber-millennials-within-a-year.html">analysis</a>, India’s Gen-Z population will rise to 472 million next year, double that of China’s. India’s current population stands at about 1.3 billion people. As “digital natives”, the Gen Z have a lot in common with millennials in terms of being tech-savvy and expecting a strong digital presence from consumer brands, but interestingly, they also show a great degree of variety in their preferences, research shows. For instance, a study by <a href="https://www.accenture.com/in-en/insight-redesigning-retail-next-generation">Accenture</a> shows that Gen Z also have a liking for traditional methods of interacting with businesses, engaging with both offline and online channels. Spending power In the near-future, Asian millennials will continue to wield enormous influence in terms of purchasing power. According to McKinsey, millennials in China will <a href="https://www.schroders.com/en/us/professional-investor/insights/equities/the-rise-of-young-asia-how-millennials-are-transforming-a-region/">make</a> up 35% of urban consumption by 2022 up from 15% in 2012. The purchasing power of Indian millennials is significantly higher than the previous generations with the majority of working millennials being the main income earners of their families. Globally, Gen Z is expected to account for $29 billion (₹2 trillion) to $143 billion (₹9.9 trillion) in direct spending by 2020. That economic power is already reflecting in the luxury goods space. A significant chunk of luxury goods sales will come from millennials and Gen Z, according to the annual Deloitte <a href="https://www2.deloitte.com/content/dam/Deloitte/at/Documents/consumer-business/deloitte-global-powers-of-luxury-goods-2018.pdf">report</a> “Global Powers of Luxury Goods”. By 2025, millennials and Gen Z combined are expected to make up more than 40% of the overall luxury goods market, up from 30% two years ago, said the report. Bye-bye, brand loyalty Both millennials and Gen Z seem to care less about brand loyalty compared to older generations, putting more value on the experience and product, and will quickly switch brands if they aren’t satisfied. Millennials and Gen Z can have vastly different expectations from brands in different industries as well – ‘self-service’ technology from an app like Uber is much more important compared to a banking product where they might want a face-to-face interaction. However, compared to millennials, Gen Z may have a lower tolerance for sub-par digital shopping experience. “Gen Z’s low threshold for mistakes and ‘system issues’ will make millennials look like patient saints,” says an EY report. So how are businesses likely to adapt? According to Deloitte, millennials and Gen Z seek a ‘personalised’ shopping experience from retail brands. As a result, many luxury retailers and financial services institutions have already started investing in technologies such as <keyword id="107950" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="artificial-intelligence">artificial intelligence</keyword> and augmented reality in part to strengthen relationships with customers and accurately predict their shopping needs and behaviours.

After millennials, Gen Z is about to reshape businesses

According to data from hospitality chain Oyo, India witnessed an enormous increase of nearly 133% in bookings made by solo travellers in December 2018, as compared to same time in 2017. These booking majorly consisted cold destinations. While another travel website, Klook, has recorded an upsurge in bookings from 22% in 2017 to 26% in 2018 with Dubai, Thailand, and Singapore as major attractions. Both companies, on being asked about the upsurge, said that solo travelling is gaining attention of millennials for the sake of ‘alone time’ and the trend has been increasing year on year. As more people are going with the concept of solo travelling, Burhanuddin Pithawala, VP Growth and Conversions, OYO, told Business Insider that “We believe that this could be a result of various factors like need to spend quality ‘me time’, flexibility at work where individuals are allowed to work remotely as well as the ease of booking hotels across geographies at the push of a button.” More women are travelling If we go by the google trends for 2017, over 10 million women searched websites for <keyword id="1187982" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Solo-Travel">solo travel</keyword>. In India, over half of domestic solo travellers are women, <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/columns/solo-women-travellers-are-a-valuable-segment-of-the-tourism-sector/story-gfRFVo46gwjgB0iIToTneL.html">according to</a> ministry of statistics and programmes — which clearly indicates that women are leading the way in solo travelling. In fact, according to a survey by <keyword id="1805678" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Booking-com">booking.com</keyword>, a travel fare aggregator, over half of India’s population said that they are willing to go solo this year — that accounts to 18% more than global travellers. “The trend will continue to grow across demographics and will not be limited to a particular gender or age group.” said Ritu Mehrotra, Country Manager at Booking.com. Globally, the travel industry’s tours and activities market is going to touch $183 billion by 2020, said a survey by Klook. In 2018, Solo travel witnessed an year-over-year increase from 31% to 38% , it highlighted in a report shared with Business Insider. More Indians are travelling solo than ever before

The survey adds that even though the labour market outlook is positive, there would only be a moderate growth in job opportunities for IT professionals.
