Mumbai: Food delivery company <keyword id="19901323" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Zomato" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Zomato" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Zomato">Zomato</keyword> has completed the <keyword id="19901090" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="acquisition" source="keywords">acquisition</keyword> of <keyword id="19898109" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paytm" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Paytm" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Paytm">Paytm</keyword> subsidiaries WEPL and OTPL for the <keyword id="19922574" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="entertainment" source="keywords">entertainment</keyword> <keyword id="20028334" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ticketing" source="keywords">ticketing</keyword> business, the company said in its filing with the exchanges.<br /><br />On August 21, the Deepinder Goyal-led company entered into definitive agreements for the acquisition of Paytm's entertainment arms.<br /><br />In its stock exchange filing on August 21, Noida-based Paytm had also confirmed the development.<br /><br />The deal, valued at Rs 2,048 crores on a cash-free, debt-free basis, stands "as a testament to the value" Paytm has created through its entertainment ticketing business, bringing choice and convenience to millions of Indians with its services and scale, the company said in a release filed with exchanges.<br /><br />As part of this agreement, OCL will transfer its entertainment ticketing business to Zomato by transferring OCL's entertainment ticketing business to its 100 per cent subsidiaries, Orbgen Technologies Pvt Limited (OTPL) and Wasteland Entertainment Pvt Ltd (WEPL) and selling a 100 per cent stake in its subsidiaries OTPL and WEPL, which operate the TicketNew and Insider platforms, respectively to Zomato.<br /><br />As per the information provided by the fintech, about 280 existing employees from the entertainment ticketing business will be part of Zomato.<br /><br />Paytm had said that the company wants to focus on the payments and financial services distribution segment.<br /><br />During a transition period (up to 12 months), the movie and event tickets will continue to be available on the Paytm app, as well as on the TicketNew and Insider platforms, ensuring a smooth and uninterrupted experience for users and merchant partners.<br /><br />As per Paytm, the company built movie ticketing from the ground up and acquired TicketNew and Insider for a total consideration of Rs 268 crores from 2017 to 2018. Further, additional investments were also made to scale up the business.<br /><br />On Wednesday, after the announcement, the stocks of Zomato opened in green at Rs 256.20. The company in the past six months has delivered a 60 per cent reward to its shareholders. (ANI)<br /><br />

Zomato completes acquisition of Paytm's entertainment and ticketing business

In an effort to give a further boost to partnership, India, and the US signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (<keyword id="19914814" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="MoU" source="keywords">MoU</keyword>), which will enable the Micro, Small and medium enterprises (<keyword id="19910977" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="MSMEs" source="keywords">MSMEs</keyword>) of the two countries to participate in <keyword id="19908188" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-markets" source="keywords">global markets</keyword> and foster trade.<br /><br />"<keyword id="20233690" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India-US" source="keywords">India-US</keyword> joining hands to promote cooperation in MSMEs," the official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal, wrote on X.<br /><br />"Today, India-US signed a landmark MoU that enables MSMEs of the two countries to participate in global markets, drive innovation, foster trade, and support <keyword id="19930409" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="women-entrepreneurs" source="keywords">women entrepreneurs</keyword>," he added.<br /><br /> S. C. L. Das, Secretary, Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, and Isabel Casillas Guzman, Administrator, <keyword id="21149255" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="small-business-administration" source="keywords">Small Business Administration</keyword> (SBA), United States of America, signed the MoU here in New Delhi.<br /><br />The MoU provides a framework for both sides to discuss issues concerning micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and explore possibilities for cooperation.<br /><br />It envisages the exchange of expertise between the two sides on issues related to improving MSME participation in the global marketplace through mutual visits as well as webinars and workshops on topics including access to trade and export finance, technology and digital trade; green economy, and trade facilitation.<br /><br />The MoU also provides for the joint conduct of programmes for women entrepreneurs to empower them and facilitate trade partnerships between women-owned small businesses in the two countries.<br /><br />Recognising the crucial role that MSMEs play in advancing <keyword id="20421749" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="inclusive-growth" source="keywords">inclusive growth</keyword>, expanding exports, and boosting employment, the two sides also agreed to explore the development of a "Business Matching Digital Platform" to boost <keyword id="20035864" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="business-opportunities" source="keywords">business opportunities</keyword>.<br />

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Some of the top names in artificial intelligence, including Sam Altman, have called for AI regulation.</li><li>Some Fortune 500 companies worry that the uncertainty around future laws could be bad for business.</li></ul><p>As tech leaders squabble over artificial intelligence regulations, their companies' legal departments are highlighting the business risks that the patchwork of early-stage rules could pose.</p><p>DeepMind CEO <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-extinction-risk-openai-deepmind-anthropic-ceos-sam-altman-2023-5">Demis Hassabis</a>, OpenAI cofounder <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sam-altman-openai-artificial-intelligence-regulation-international-agency-2024-5">Sam Altman</a>, and even <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-backing-california-controversial-ai-bill-2024-8">Elon Musk</a> have called for varying degrees of guardrails that they believe could keep the technology from running amok.</p><p>Tech-law experts previously told Business Insider that an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-new-dark-age-risks-regulations-2024-5">unchecked generative AI</a> could usher in a "dark age" as copyrighted work is replicated by models, disincentivizing original work, and misinformation is easily created and distributed by bad actors.</p><p>As tech leaders and policymakers figure out what those <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-regulation-2023-us-eu-china-100-10">safety measures</a> would actually look like, more Fortune 500 companies are underscoring regulations' possible business risks.</p><p>An analysis from Arize AI, a startup that helps companies troubleshoot generative AI systems, found that 137 of the Fortune 500 companies — or about 27% of Fortune 500 companies — identified AI regulation as a risk to their business in annual reports filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, as of May 1.</p><p>And the number of Fortune 500 companies that listed AI as a risk factor soared nearly 500% between 2022 and 2024, per Arize's data.</p><p>In these annual reports, companies cited costs that could arise from complying with the new laws, the penalties that could come from breaking them, or rules that could slow down AI development.</p><p>To be clear, they're not necessarily saying that they oppose AI laws. Instead, the concern is that it's unclear what those laws will look like, how they will be enforced, and whether those rules will be consistent around the world. California's legislature, for example,<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/california-assembly-passes-ai-safety-bill-artificial-intelligence-big-tech-2024-8"> just passed</a> the first state-level AI bill — but it's unclear if Gov. Gavin Newsom will sign it into law or if other states will follow.</p><p>"The uncertainty created by an evolving regulatory landscape clearly presents real risks and compliance costs for businesses that rely on AI systems for everything from reducing credit card fraud to improving patient care or customer service calls," Jason Lopatecki, CEO of Arize AI told Business Insider in an email. "I don't envy the legislator or aide trying to wrap their head around what's happening right now."</p><h2 id="a461bb6f-56f2-45fc-8956-8c3b52de2a22">Regulation could slow business</h2><p>Companies' annual reports warn investors of a long list of possible business hits, from the specific — another wave of COVID-19 — to general risks, like the possibilities of cybersecurity attacks or bad weather.<strong> </strong>Now, AI regulations feature in that list of unknowns, including the cost of keeping up with new rules.</p><p>Meta, for example, mentioned AI 11 times in its 2022 annual report and 39 times in 2023. The company devoted a full page in its <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://d18rn0p25nwr6d.cloudfront.net/CIK-0001326801/c7318154-f6ae-4866-89fa-f0c589f2ee3d.pdf">2023 annual report </a>to the risks of its own AI initiatives, including regulation. The tech giant said it was "not possible to predict all of the risks related to the use of AI," including how regulation will affect the company.</p><p>Motorola Solutions said in its <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.motorolasolutions.com/content/dam/msi/investors/sec/archive/2024/000119312524079728/d422819dars.pdf">annual report</a> that complying with AI regulations "may be onerous and expensive, and may be inconsistent from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, further increasing the cost of compliance and the risk of liability."</p><p>"It is also not clear how existing and future laws and regulations governing issues such as AI, AI-enabled products, biometrics and other video analytics apply or will be enforced with respect to the products and services we sell," the company wrote.</p><p>NetApp, a data infrastructure company, said in its <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://investors.netapp.com/static-files/dc93c640-c045-422b-92d6-f71d0a18c2f5">annual report</a> that it aims to "use AI responsibly" but that it may be "unsuccessful in identifying or resolving issues before they arise." The company added that regulation that slows down the adoption of AI could be bad for its business.</p><p>"To the extent regulation materially delays or impedes the adoption of AI, demand for our products may not meet our forecasts," the company wrote.</p><p>George Kurian, the CEO of NetApp, told <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/ai-regulation-is-coming-fortune-500-companies-are-bracing-for-impact-94bba201?mod=hp_minor_pos4">The Wall Street Journal</a> that he encourages AI regulation.</p><p>"We need a combination of industry and consumer self-regulation, as well as formal regulation," Kurian told the publication. "If regulation is focused on enabling the confident use of AI, it can be a boon."</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A former top aide to New York's governor has been accused of secretly working for China.</li><li>Prosecutors say Linda Sun carried out tasks for Beijing like blocking Taiwan's access to authorities.</li></ul><p>Federal prosecutors have accused a former high-level aide to New York's governor of secretly working for China in exchange for perks like orchestra tickets, millions in cash, and over a dozen Nanjing-style salted ducks.</p><p>Linda Sun, who worked for Gov. Kathy Hochul and her predecessor, Andrew Cuomo, was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-edny/pr/former-high-ranking-new-york-state-government-employee-charged-acting-undisclosed">charged on Tuesday</a> with over 10 criminal counts, including visa fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy to violate the Foreign Agents Registration Act.</p><p>Sun, 40, is accused of blocking Taiwanese officials' access to the New York governor's office and changing public messages from both governors to boost China's talking points, among other acts.</p><p>According to the Justice Department, she also sent messages informing the Chinese consulate about Taiwan's requests to the governor's office.</p><p>"It's all been taken of satisfactorily," she is alleged to written in a message to a Chinese official in 2016.</p><p>"Just an FYI, I already blocked it," she also wrote in 2019 when the office of Taiwan's president invited Cuomo to a banquet, per prosecutors.</p><p>Court filings unsealed on Tuesday said that Sun held several high-level positions while working for over a decade in the New York government, including as director for Asian-American affairs and Queens regional representative under Cuomo.</p><p>She was promoted to deputy chief of staff under Hochul in September 2021, and went on to become deputy commissioner for strategic business development in the New York Labor Department from September 2022 to 2023.</p><p>Prosecutors said that during this time, Sun would use bogus invitation letters to set up meetings for Chinese officials with New York authorities. At one point, she also tried to organize a trip to China for Hochul, per court filings.</p><p>"Sun wielded her position of influence among executives to covertly promote PRC and CCP agendas, directly threatening our country's national security," said FBI Acting Assistant Director Curtis, referring to China's official name and the Chinese Communist Party.</p><h2 id="052df450-e07a-4818-9140-f6359655ee18">Ducks, VIP suite access, and a condo in Honolulu</h2><p>In return, Sun received a slew of undeclared gifts, including ballet and orchestra tickets, VIP suite access at sporting events, promotion for a friend's company, and millions of dollars to the China-based business of her husband, Chris Hu, per court filings.</p><p>Investigators said Sun also received salted ducks prepared by the personal chef of an official at the Chinese consulate, receiving them on four occasions from 2021 to 2022. Court documents say she got up to six ducks at a time.</p><p>Federal prosecutors added that Sun was also rewarded with a job for her cousin in China and received benefits from local officials when traveling with a colleague for a work trip to Jiangsu province.</p><p>Per the Justice Department, Sun and Hu used the money they received from Chinese officials to buy at least two properties — one in Manhasset, New York, that's now worth $4.1 million, and a condominium in Honolulu, worth $2.1 million.</p><p>They also bought luxury cars like a 2024 Ferrari, the officials added.</p><p>Hu has been charged by the Justice Department too, and is accused of laundering money and opening bank accounts with a relative's driver's license photo.</p><p>A spokesperson for Hochul told Business Insider that the New York governor's office hired Sun more than 10 years ago.</p><p>"We terminated her employment in March 2023 after discovering evidence of misconduct, immediately reported her actions to law enforcement, and have assisted law enforcement throughout this process," they said.</p><p>When Hochul was asked on Tuesday about Sun by <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://soundcloud.com/govkathyhochul/governor-hochul-is-a-guest-on-wnycs-all-things-considered?si=6d175bc91f1f4c99ad6237bcfc46801e&amp;utm_source=clipboard&amp;utm_medium=text&amp;utm_campaign=social_sharing">WNYC's radio podcast "All Things Considered,"</a> the governor said that the aide was fired "the second we discovered some levels of misconduct."</p><p>She declined to say which of Sun's behaviors were flagged by her office.</p><p>Liu Pengyu, a spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in Washington, told BI he was unaware of the specific details of Sun's case.</p><p>"But in recent years, the US government and media have frequently hyped up the so-called 'Chinese agents' narratives, many of which have later been proven untrue," he said in a statement, adding that the embassy opposed "the groundlessly slandering and smearing targeting China."</p><p>Jarrod Schaeffer, Sun's lawyer, told the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://apnews.com/article/former-hochul-aide-arrested-new-york-c588a95e87b853ca3d23b36aae4c87cd">Associated Press</a> on Tuesday: "We're looking forward to addressing these charges in court. Our client is understandably upset that these charges have been brought."</p><p>Schaeffer and a spokesperson for Cuomo did not immediately respond to requests for comment sent outside regular business hours by BI.</p>
