<ul class="summary-list"><li>Plasma exchange therapy is gaining popularity as a wellness trend among longevity-seekers.</li><li>The procedure involves replacing plasma to remove toxins, typically from specific health conditions.</li></ul><p>A medical treatment used for health emergencies and autoimmune disorders is becoming the hot new wellness trend for CEOs, athletes, and other longevity-seekers.</p><p>Bryan Johnson, a CEO and entrepreneur known for his strict longevity regimen and exploration of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stem-cell-injections-knee-joints-longevity-wellness-industry-bryan-johnson-2024-7">experimental antiaging treatments</a>, recently posted on X about his experience with plasmapheresis, or plasma exchange.</p><p>The procedure involves gradually removing small amounts of blood and spinning it in a centrifuge. That separates the plasma from the red blood cell in order to remove it and replace it with another fluid, such as albumin, a protein in plasma.</p><p>At a wellness clinic, it can cost from $5,000 to more than $10,000.</p><p>XPrize founder Peter Diamandis has tried it. So has former NFL star <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nfl-hall-of-famer-troy-aikman-follows-pegan-diet-2022-1">Troy Aikman,</a> calling it "essentially a human oil change."</p><p>Dr. Jonathann Kuo, a regenerative medicine specialist and founder of Extension Health, performed Aikman's plasma exchange. He told Business Insider it helps remove toxins, some related to aging, that accumulate over time.</p><p>"We call it an oil change because it is kind of refreshing and revitalizing your circulation and getting rid of all of the dirty stuff that's circulating, basically," he said.</p><p>Kuo said it's part of a suite of cutting-edge <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/human-life-span-plateaued-what-you-can-do-long-life-2024-10">antiaging therapies</a> offered at his clinic.</p><p>Plasma exchange can improve certain <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-the-maximum-age-of-humans-115-or-older-2023-3">measures of aging</a>, at least in the short term, according to some <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33191466/">animal studies</a> from the Conboy Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley. The same researchers found similar potential antiaging benefits in a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9398900/">very small exploratory study on humans</a>.</p><p>There's no major risk of serious side effects, though infection can occur, but it's not clear that plasma exchange is beneficial for most healthy people, according to Dr. Brian Adkins, a professor of pathology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.</p><p>Adkins performs plasma exchanges regularly to help patients with chronic conditions such as autoimmune disorders. He said the treatment is also used in serious circumstances such as organ failure or sepsis.</p><h2 id="109ebfd5-b3eb-4eca-a26d-676eae4aeea0"><strong>Should you get a plasma exchange for longevity?</strong></h2><p>Plasma exchange therapy is typically used for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/jca.22043">specific conditions</a> like Guillain-Barre Syndrome, and is reserved for more extreme cases, Dr. Ryan Marino, a toxicologist and professor of emergency medicine at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, told Business Insider.</p><p>Johnson faced some backlash from medical experts on X for seemingly commodifying a treatment that can be crucial for people with chronic illnesses, or life-saving in emergencies.</p><p>"It's not supposed to be boutique medicine; it's supposed to be evidence-based medicine," Adkins said.</p><p>Undergoing plasma treatment at a longevity clinic may not make sense for several reasons.</p><p>For one, people who aren't experiencing organ failure or other life-threatening medical conditions naturally remove toxins are naturally via the liver and kidneys.</p><p>Plasma exchange is also unlikely to help remove environmental contaminants such as <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microplastics-penises-testicles-male-fertility-plastic-health-environment-2024-7">microplastics</a>, a growing concern for long-term health since the procedure involves plastic bags and tubing, and the components are exposed to plastics during processing.</p><p>It's also a misconception that plasma exchange completely replaces the plasma since some amount needs to continue circulating in your body while you're alive, like changing your oil while the car is running.</p><p>Much of what we know about the safety and potential benefits of plasma exchange comes from data on people who donate plasma — which not only doesn't cost anything, you can even get paid for it.</p><p>Removing plasma can lower a person's lipid levels, including <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/treatments/high-cholesterol">"bad" cholesterol</a>. However, this is temporary because plasma regenerates quickly, which is why it can be safely removed or donated.</p><p>Marino and Adkins said the interest in plasma exchanges for longevity is part of an enduring fascination with cleansing our bodies from toxins, dating back to ancient times and antique procedures like bloodletting.</p><p>"It sounds plausible that cleaning your blood or plasma would provide benefits, especially if you believe that there are such toxins circulating that could be removed," Marino said.</p><p>If you're interested in living a longer, healthier life, there are plenty of other <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quick-life-hacks-increase-longevity-2023-8">science-based longevity strategies</a>, including eating a nutritious diet, getting regular exercise, and sleeping enough.</p><p>"There are a lot of really meaningful things you can do to improve your health. Maybe people's efforts might be better served exploring some of those inventions," Adkins said.</p>

If this sounds like a scene from a futuristic James Bond-style movie, think again.</span></p><p><span>Business Insider's Tom Carter, a London-based business reporter, got a chance to see Chinese automaker BYD's latest fleet of </span><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-ev-giants-innovation-ai-auto-show-european-rivals-despair-2024-10"><span>technologically advanced cars</span></a><span> at the Paris Motor Show earlier this week.</span></p><p><span>The seven cars they showed off included the Yangwang U8, a hybrid luxury SUV that comes with a drone and, according to the company, can turn around like a tank and float on water.</span></p><p><span>It's only available in China right now, but made its European debut at the show even as the European Union is set to impose harsh tariffs on electric vehicles from China.</span></p><p><span>European manufacturers are trying to claw back some of the market share of electric vehicles from their Chinese competitors. Aside from tariffs, another way to do that is through partnerships.</span></p><p><span>That's what Stellantis — the parent company of Jeep, Ram, and Fiat — did when it </span><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bmw-stellantis-renault-auto-giants-on-chinese-ev-competition-2024-10"><span>teamed up with Leapmotor</span></a><span> to sell EVs outside of China. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Viktor Bout is brokering weapons sales to Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen, per The Wall Street Journal.</li><li>Bout was released in a prisoner swap for Brittney Griner after a decade in US custody.</li></ul><p>The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/viktor-bout-convicted-arms-dealer-russian-prison-swap-brittney-griner-2022-8">notorious Russian arms dealer</a>, who was <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/merchant-death-viktor-bout-arms-dealer-russia-politics-britney-griner-2023-9">exchanged for US basketball star Brittney Griner</a> two years ago, is trying to sell weapons to the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.wsj.com/world/russia/putins-merchant-of-death-is-back-in-the-arms-business-this-time-selling-to-the-houthis-10b7f521">according to The Wall Street Journal.</a></p><p><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/viktor-bout-convicted-arms-dealer-russian-prison-swap-brittney-griner-2022-8">Viktor Bout,</a> sometimes dubbed the "Merchant of Death," was arrested in a US sting operation in 2008, having spent decades smuggling Soviet-made weapons from Europe to the Middle East and Africa.</p><p>He was later convicted on multiple charges, including conspiracy to kill American citizens and officials and delivery of anti-aircraft missiles.</p><p>After serving a decade in US custody, he was released in 2022 as part of a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-viktor-bout-brittney-griner-during-prisoner-swap-exchange-report-2022-12">high-profile prisoner swap</a> for Griner, who had been detained in Russia after bringing a small amount of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/brittney-griner-had-a-prescription-for-medical-marijuana-lawyers-say-2022-7">cannabis oil</a> into the country.</p><p>Following his release, Bout appeared to have shifted his focus to politics, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/viktor-bout-joins-far-right-russian-party-could-run-for-parliament-2022-12">joining a pro-Kremlin ultranationalist party</a> and winning a local assembly seat.</p><p>However, according to the Journal, he is back in the business of brokering arms deals — <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pentagon-fears-russias-viktor-bout-could-restart-old-arms-business-2022-12">a fear that Pentagon officials expressed</a> just days after his release.</p><p>Citing sources familiar with the matter, including a European security official, the Journal reported that Bout was present at a negotiation in Moscow in August, in which the Houthis sought to negotiate the purchase of $10 million worth of automatic weapons.</p><p>The sources told the publication that two Houthi representatives had traveled to Moscow under the cover of buying vehicles and pesticides.</p><p>They told the Journal that they did not know if the deal was being negotiated on behalf of the Kremlin or just with its quiet support.</p><p>The Kremlin did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.</p><p>According to the people familiar with the matter speaking to the Journal, the deliveries, mostly of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-sniper-in-ukraine-prefer-soviet-rifles-easier-get-bullets-2024-4">AK-74s</a>, could start as early as October under the cover of food supplies.</p><p>Houthi rebels have repeatedly attacked commercial shipping in the Red Sea since last year, though some attacks have targeted Israeli and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/houthi-rebels-say-downed-30m-reaper-drone-yemen-eighth-loss-2024-9">US military vessels</a>.</p><p>The US and Western allies launched counterattacks to thwart these efforts, which have had major economic implications.</p><p>According to an April Defense Intelligence Agency <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.dia.mil/Portals/110/Images/News/Military_Powers_Publications/YEM_Houthi-Attacks-Pressuring-International-Trade.pdf">report</a>, container shipping through the Red Sea has declined massively, alternative shipping routes are increasing voyage costs, and insurance premiums for Red Sea transits have spiked.</p><p>"Currently, we are seeing premiums as high as 2% on vessel value for a single Red Sea transit amid fluctuating insurer appetite," Louise Nevill, UK CEO, marine, cargo &amp; logistics, with broker Marsh, told <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/red-sea-insurance-costs-soar-houthi-shipping-threats-loom-sources-say-2024-09-19/">Reuters</a> earlier this month. That's compared to a figure 0.7% just weeks earlier.</p><p>In January, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.state.gov/secretary-antony-j-blinken-remarks-to-the-press-20/"><u>told reporters at a press conference</u></a> that the Houthis' attacks on international shipping are "a threat to everyone."</p><p>The Houthis have also launched drones and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/houthi-missile-israel-air-defense-system-iran-2024-9">missiles at Israel</a>, which they say is in support of Palestinians in Gaza.</p><p>For months, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-may-arm-houthi-rebels-anti-ship-missiles-us-intel-2024-7">US intelligence agencies have warned</a> that Russia might <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/iran-helping-houthis-try-secure-russia-ship-missiles-red-sea-2024-9">arm Houthi rebels with anti-ship missiles</a> in retaliation for US support for Ukraine, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.wsj.com/world/middle-east/u-s-launches-effort-to-stop-russia-from-arming-houthis-with-antiship-missiles-98131a8a">according to the Journal.</a></p><p>"These attacks are having a real effect on the prices that people have to pay for food, for medicine, for energy," Blinken said. "Ships have to get diverted to other places, insurance rates go up, and the basic principle of freedom of navigation is what's at stake."</p><p>While the weapons deal reportedly orchestrated by Viktor Bout does not involve anti-ship missiles, it would still represent a notable Russian intervention in the ongoing Red Sea crisis.</p>

The Russian arms dealer who was exchanged for Brittney Griner is trying to sell weapons to the Houthis: report

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Abaxx is a new commodities exchange that aims to stabilize prices and aid the energy transition.</li><li>"Trade and network keeps the world at peace," Abaxx's CEO told BI.</li></ul><p>The race to clean-up the global economy is on.</p><p>Investment in the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-renewable-energy-transition-solar-electric-vehicles-hit-records-2024-2">energy transition</a> — a broad shift from fossil-based energy production systems to renewable resources like wind and solar power — hit $1.8 billion in 2023, with countries like China and the United States leading the charge, according to BloombergNEF, an energy research company. The International Energy Agency says total investment in clean energy could reach $2 trillion by the end of the year.</p><p>But the shift to a cleaner, lower-carbon world doesn't depend solely on the work of government officials, legislators, or even major businesses. It also hinges on players working behind the scenes to secure the prices of key commodities like liquefied natural gas, essential for electricity generation and heating, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fund-carbon-removal-corporates-avoid-bad-credits-2023-2">carbon offsets</a>, which help companies counteract the impact of their carbon emissions.</p><p>A new Singapore-based commodities exchange called Abaxx, which launched in June, is working to do that by providing companies, governments, and project developers with a transparent marketplace for their trades. Commodities markets help stabilize prices by helping suppliers and consumers figure out fair prices, hedge against volatile price changes, and execute efficient and transparent transactions.</p><p>Exchanges like Abaxx play a role in this because they help lock in prices and mitigate drastic fluctuations in the future. Abaxx deals in futures contracts, legally binding agreements to buy or sell commodities at a specified future date. Three regionally deliverable liquified natural gas contracts and two carbon offset contracts are already trading on the exchange. It's working on launching futures contracts for gold and battery metals, like lithium, a component in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-tesla-cheaper-electric-vehicle-battery-technology-lithium-shift-2023-3">batteries that power EVs like Tesla</a>.</p><p>Josh Crumb, the CEO and founder of Abaxx, says unclear pricing can lead to higher and more volatile prices<strong> </strong>for consumers while also forcing commodity producers to navigate turbulent investment cycles.</p><p>"If we look at the battery supply chain, nickel sulfate, lithium, cobalt, these things have gone through huge swings of boom and bust over the last couple of years," Crumb told Business Insider. "The main reason why is we don't have a lot of market transparency so that people can forward plan, price, hedge, all of that."</p><p>Crumb first realized that the commodity industry needed more innovation when he was working as a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rip-goldman-sachs-wall-street-investment-bank-dead-2023-11">strategist at Goldman Sachs</a> in the years following the 2008 financial crisis. That coincided with the end of the commodities boom of the 2000s, during which the prices of many commodities, from food to oil to chemicals, had drastically surged.</p><p>Now, with trading in full swing, Crumb hopes Abaxx will play a role in stabilizing what he sees as the next commodity investment cycle — marked not just by a need for new commodities to facilitate the energy transition but also a surge in electrification.</p><p>"When people speak of the energy transition to a lower carbon economy, they are usually speaking of replacing internal combustion engines with electric vehicles, with electricity supplied by low carbon renewables, hydro, and nuclear power. This will lead to a dramatic increase in electricity consumption," a representative for Crumb wrote to Business Insider by email. Between 2022 and 2050, global electricity generation is expected to surge at a faster rate than it did over the past decade, according to a report from the International Energy Agency.</p><p>Most importantly, though, exchanges like Abaxx could play a critical role in geopolitics, Crumb said. <ul class="summary-list"><li>"Shang-Chi" star Simu Liu called out two boba tea entrepreneurs who appeared on an episode of "Dragons' Den."</li><li>They were promoting their new drink, which they said was healthier than regular boba tea.</li></ul><p>Simu Liu is in the middle of a brewing business feud over a popular Asian drink.</p><p>The "Shang-Chi" actor called out a pair of entrepreneurs from Québec during a Thursday episode of "Dragons' Den," the Canadian version of "Shark Tank."</p><p>Entrepreneurs Sébastien Fiset and Jess Frenette, who founded the bottled popping <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/taiwan-original-boba-tea-starbucks-chun-shui-tang-competition-tptea-2024-7">bubble tea</a> brand called Bobba, were asking for funding in exchange for 18% of their company's ownership, per <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/asian-america/simu-liu-criticizes-bobba-cultural-appropriation-rcna175209">NBC</a>.</p><p>The duo was marketing it as a healthier alternative to the "trendy, sugar drink you are queuing up for, and you are never quite sure about its content."</p><p>The judges were given the drink to taste. When asked if he liked the drink, Liu, who joined the show as a panelist in its 19th season, said, "I thought it was fine."</p><p>"But I'm concerned about this idea of disrupting or disturbing bubble tea," he said in response to the duo's marketing strategy.</p><p>When his co-judge Manjit Minhas argued that not everything had to remain traditional, Liu said: "But there's also the issue of cultural appropriation."</p><p>"There's the issue of taking something that's very distinctly Asian in its identity, and quote-unquote, making it better, which I have an issue with," Liu added.</p><p>Liu, a general partner at the venture capital fund Markham Valley Ventures, called Fiset and Frenette out for not including the origins of boba, which is a Taiwanese drink, on the cans of their products.</p><p>According to Liu's LinkedIn, Markham Valley Ventures invests in minority-led startups and Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) businesses.</p><p>Liu said on "Dragons' Den" that he started his venture company for a lot of reasons but "primarily to uplift minority entrepreneurs."</p><p>"And not only do I feel like this is not happening here, but that I would be uplifting a business that is profiting off of something that feels so dear to my cultural heritage," he said of Bobba.</p><p>Liu further asked how the duo were paying respect to "this very Asian drink" and who was on their staff and "cap table."</p><p>Fiset told Liu that the Canada-based duo had traveled to Taiwan to meet with their partners there, who he called "part of our team."</p><p>The exchange on "Dragons' Den" has gone viral on social media, with people on TikTok and Instagram calling Bobba out and accusing the brand of cultural appropriation.</p><p>As of press time, the most viewed clip of the exchange, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@cbcgem/video/7424242804861324549?lang=en">posted</a> by CBC Gem on TikTok, has been viewed more than 8.2 million times.</p><p>The clip has sparked parodies on TikTok.</p><p>One TikTok clip, posted by user Winniedapoo, has been seen 3.1 million times as of press time. In the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@wenniedapoo/video/7424908191114235168">clip</a>, the TikTok user films himself drinking boba with the overlaid caption: "Felt like drinking my ethnical drink today that 'I'm never quite sure about its content.'"</p><p>In an apology statement on Bobba's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.instagram.com/bobbaofficiel/p/DBFG-Z5xE-8/?img_index=1">Instagram</a> on Monday, Fiset and Frenette said that Liu "raised very valid points regarding cultural appropriation" and that they "welcome this learning opportunity."</p><p>"When we said, 'You're never quite sure about its contents,' we were not referring to the traditional bubble tea formula found in specialized shops, nor were we criticizing it," the statement said.</p><p>"What we were comparing it to is the other ready-to-drink products like ours found in big box stores," it added.</p><h2 id="f35e0085-1744-4a9d-9b02-fd2f8e852100">Not the first time Liu's been vocal about race</h2><p>Liu on Saturday posted a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@simuliu/video/7424961636139666730?lang=en&amp;q=simu%20liu%20bubble%20tea&amp;t=1728967087373">TikTok</a> saying he appreciated the outpouring of support for his stance, but that he condemned any harassment and death threats directed toward the owners of Bobba.</p><p>"It's never OK to make threats, it's never OK to bully and harass online," he said.</p><p>Liu has been outspoken about race issues.</p><p>In 2021, he <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/shang-chi-simu-liu-response-film-as-experiment-comment-2021-8">clapped back at</a> Disney's former CEO Bob Chapek, who said that the upcoming "Shang-Chi" release would be an "interesting experiment."</p><p>Liu took to Instagram and <a target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow" href="https://twitter.com/SimuLiu/status/1426464028138762245"><u>X</u></a> to address Chapek's comments, writing, "We are not an 'interesting experiment."</p><p>In June 2021, he said a show he was on, "Kim's Convenience," had a team of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/simu-liu-kims-conveniance-writers-never-gave-asian-actors-stories-2021-6">"overwhelmingly white" writers.</a></p><p>The global boba tea industry — or bubble tea as it is known in Asia — is estimated to be worth billions. In July, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.alliedmarketresearch.com/bubble-tea-market">Allied Market Research</a> pegged its value at $3.1 billion in 2023, and projected that the industry would be worth $5.4 billion by 2033.</p><p>Representatives for Liu and Bobba didn't respond to a request for comment from Business Insider, sent outside business hours.</p>

Yet, one of the most coveted projects on the Street right now is unlikely to mint much money for the investment banks involved — at least in the short term.</p><p>Last week, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/tech/ai/the-14-billion-question-dividing-openai-and-microsoft-71cf7d37">Wall Street Journal reported</a> that OpenAI and its longtime backer, Microsoft, have begun talks to determine how much money Microsoft stands to receive if OpenAI converted to a for-profit institution. The Journal reported that OpenAI tapped advisors at <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/goldman-sachs-2q-earnings-david-solomon-investment-banking-forecast-2024-7">Goldman Sachs</a>, and Microsoft, which has poured some $14 billion into the AI startup as a nonprofit, is relying on Morgan Stanley to facilitate the negotiations. Spokespersons for both Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley declined to comment or confirm their reported participation in the project.</p><p>BI called up two Wall Street dealmakers who specialize in tech banking to walk us through what the process could look like, as well as a valuation expert on the faculty of the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wharton-data-science-class-upenn-madoff-diamonds-airbnb-finance-jobs-2022-3">Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania</a>. They also shared a look at what it could mean for the banks that won this business, both in terms of pay and reputation. The two investment bankers – neither of whom are affiliated with Goldman, Morgan Stanley, OpenAI, or Microsoft — requested anonymity to preserve industry relationships.</p><p>The experts said the OpenAI valuation process stands to be stressful and drawn out — potentially taking up to six months — and could come with little to no financial reward for the banks involved. That said, the job still represents a huge win for Goldman and Morgan Stanley's tech teams since they now stand at the front of the line for whatever comes next for OpenAI.</p><p>Thanks to ChatGPT, San Francisco-based OpenAI stands at the forefront of the artificial-intelligence revolution, which is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pwc.com/gx/en/issues/artificial-intelligence/publications/artificial-intelligence-study.html">projected</a> to contribute nearly $16 trillion to the world economy by 2030, according to consulting firm PwC. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/tech/ai/openai-nearly-doubles-valuation-to-157-billion-in-funding-round-ee220607?mod=article_inline">A recent fundraise</a> valued the company at more than $150 billion. After it converts to a for-profit company, it could seek to raise money through the stock market or make acquisitions — all of which could prove lucrative for its Wall Street partners.</p><p>Even the banks that are not part of this process stand to win if the final valuation is high enough, said Michael Roberts, the finance professor at Wharton. "If it comes at a really high multiple, what does that mean? It means you can raise an enormous amount of money if you are an AI company," he said, adding: "If I go back 15 years, the place to be as an investment banker was in Silicon Valley. But this could be sort of the next Silicon Valley 3.0."</p><p>Here's a look inside the process and what it means for the Wall Street dealmakers who won this business, according to the tech bankers and the finance professor.</p><h2 id="277fe458-53dd-471b-bcca-880ebd8043d7"><strong>The banks have different goals: 'You're going to do battle'</strong></h2><p>Morgan Stanley's objective will be to secure the greatest equity for its client, Microsoft, while Goldman's goal may be the opposite — pitting the two sides against one another.</p><p>"You're going to do battle," said one of the sources — a senior tech banker at a midsize investment bank — about the bankers on either side of the negotiating table.</p><p>The valuation could take as much as six months, depending on what legal snags crop up, these people said. Since there's no obvious precedent for valuing this company, the bankers will want to get creative, which could open the door to lots of debate.</p><p>The tech banker at the midsize firm said the goal will be to find comparisons in the real world that would make a compelling case for what OpenAI could be worth. "You might look at some of the early days of the last couple of generations of very disruptive technologies," he said, citing Apple in its early iPhone era and Google "back in the early days of disrupting the search market."</p><p>The second banker, a former executive at a large-cap investment bank who now handles some tech deals at a small, independent firm, said that the banks will do a "landscape analysis" and ask questions about whether OpenAI could one day take Google's place.</p><p>Roberts, the Wharton professor, proffered the name of another disruptive tech company: Uber. As it redefined the ride-hailing industry, there were "enormous" variations in its valuation projections. For OpenAI, though, the situation could be even more complex since its impact on the economy stands to be more dramatic.</p><h2 id="f2400755-f31e-489f-891d-876291a5211f"><strong>Risks and rewards</strong></h2><p>Two of the experts BI spoke to estimated that the banks' fees for their work on the valuation could be low, at under $25 million each, with one suggesting it could even be gratis due to the competitive nature of the business. A third expert estimated the fees would likely be greater than $25 million but under $100 million.</p><p>For context, advising on an actual merger or big-ticket public offering can <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/07/04/banks-earn-650-million-in-fees-and-stock-gains-from-ipo-flurry.html">generate many multiples of that</a> for investment-banking advisors — to the tune of hundreds of millions.</p><p>The fees, however, are not likely the focus. "The goal is to lock the relationship up," said the senior technology dealmaker at the midsize firm, noting that OpenAI and Microsoft are companies that bankers would kill to have as clients.</p><p>This banker said <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sam-altman-chatgpt-openai-ceo-career-net-worth-ycombinator-prepper-2023-1">Sam Altman</a>, the founder of OpenAI, appears to put a premium on trust and interpersonal relationships, which could be to Goldman's benefit. He has a reputation for being "loyalty-driven," said the banker, who has met Altman and knows his reputation through conversations with the tech community.</p><p>Morgan Stanley, for its part, has enjoyed a relationship with Microsoft that stretches back years. In 2016, the firm was the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-and-linkedin-bankers-2016-6">only advisor to Microsoft</a> on its $26 billion acquisition of social-networking-giant LinkedIn.</p><p>This wouldn't be the first time banks have shown a willingness to play the long game in exchange for future potential gains.</p><p>In 2022, a syndicate of banks led by Morgan Stanley <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-elon-musk-was-able-to-buy-twitter-despite-risks-2022-4">assembled $25 billion in capital</a> to lend to Tesla founder Elon Musk to finance his acquisition of X, the social-media platform formerly known as Twitter. X's lackluster financial performance prevented some banks <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-x-twitter-debt-financing-banks-2008-financial-crisis-2024-8">from offloading the debt</a>, leading to losses. However, the goal, as one banker said at the time, was to "get a foot in the door with the man and his business."</p><p>The investment banker who formerly worked at a large-cap bank said potential drawbacks could include some banks being excluded from other AI deals for competitive reasons.</p><p>"The likelihood that Google would take a very stance and be less willing to work with them is probably high because whenever you're involved in something like this, you're 'under the tent,' and you're seeing a lot of very sensitive things about where something is going and not going," this person explained.</p><p>Largely speaking, however, Wall Street is poised to win, Roberts said.</p><p>"Given how much money's at stake here, even the loser isn't really going to lose, are they?" he said, adding, "It's all relative."</p><p><em>Are you an investment-banking insider? Inside Wall Street's efforts to value OpenAI: Who's involved, how it could work, and what's at stake for the banks

In an effort to give a further boost to partnership, India, and the US signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (<keyword id="19914814" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="MoU" source="keywords">MoU</keyword>), which will enable the Micro, Small and medium enterprises (<keyword id="19910977" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="MSMEs" source="keywords">MSMEs</keyword>) of the two countries to participate in <keyword id="19908188" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-markets" source="keywords">global markets</keyword> and foster trade.<br /><br />"<keyword id="20233690" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India-US" source="keywords">India-US</keyword> joining hands to promote cooperation in MSMEs," the official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal, wrote on X.<br /><br />"Today, India-US signed a landmark MoU that enables MSMEs of the two countries to participate in global markets, drive innovation, foster trade, and support <keyword id="19930409" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="women-entrepreneurs" source="keywords">women entrepreneurs</keyword>," he added.<br /><br /> S. C. L. Das, Secretary, Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, and Isabel Casillas Guzman, Administrator, <keyword id="21149255" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="small-business-administration" source="keywords">Small Business Administration</keyword> (SBA), United States of America, signed the MoU here in New Delhi.<br /><br />The MoU provides a framework for both sides to discuss issues concerning micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and explore possibilities for cooperation.<br /><br />It envisages the exchange of expertise between the two sides on issues related to improving MSME participation in the global marketplace through mutual visits as well as webinars and workshops on topics including access to trade and export finance, technology and digital trade; green economy, and trade facilitation.<br /><br />The MoU also provides for the joint conduct of programmes for women entrepreneurs to empower them and facilitate trade partnerships between women-owned small businesses in the two countries.<br /><br />Recognising the crucial role that MSMEs play in advancing <keyword id="20421749" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="inclusive-growth" source="keywords">inclusive growth</keyword>, expanding exports, and boosting employment, the two sides also agreed to explore the development of a "Business Matching Digital Platform" to boost <keyword id="20035864" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="business-opportunities" source="keywords">business opportunities</keyword>.<br />
