<ul class="summary-list"><li>Plasma exchange therapy is gaining popularity as a wellness trend among longevity-seekers.</li><li>The procedure involves replacing plasma to remove toxins, typically from specific health conditions.</li></ul><p>A medical treatment used for health emergencies and autoimmune disorders is becoming the hot new wellness trend for CEOs, athletes, and other longevity-seekers.</p><p>Bryan Johnson, a CEO and entrepreneur known for his strict longevity regimen and exploration of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stem-cell-injections-knee-joints-longevity-wellness-industry-bryan-johnson-2024-7">experimental antiaging treatments</a>, recently posted on X about his experience with plasmapheresis, or plasma exchange.</p><p>The procedure involves gradually removing small amounts of blood and spinning it in a centrifuge. That separates the plasma from the red blood cell in order to remove it and replace it with another fluid, such as albumin, a protein in plasma.</p><p>At a wellness clinic, it can cost from $5,000 to more than $10,000.</p><p>XPrize founder Peter Diamandis has tried it. So has former NFL star <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nfl-hall-of-famer-troy-aikman-follows-pegan-diet-2022-1">Troy Aikman,</a> calling it "essentially a human oil change."</p><p>Dr. Jonathann Kuo, a regenerative medicine specialist and founder of Extension Health, performed Aikman's plasma exchange. He told Business Insider it helps remove toxins, some related to aging, that accumulate over time.</p><p>"We call it an oil change because it is kind of refreshing and revitalizing your circulation and getting rid of all of the dirty stuff that's circulating, basically," he said.</p><p>Kuo said it's part of a suite of cutting-edge <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/human-life-span-plateaued-what-you-can-do-long-life-2024-10">antiaging therapies</a> offered at his clinic.</p><p>Plasma exchange can improve certain <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-the-maximum-age-of-humans-115-or-older-2023-3">measures of aging</a>, at least in the short term, according to some <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33191466/">animal studies</a> from the Conboy Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley. The same researchers found similar potential antiaging benefits in a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9398900/">very small exploratory study on humans</a>.</p><p>There's no major risk of serious side effects, though infection can occur, but it's not clear that plasma exchange is beneficial for most healthy people, according to Dr. Brian Adkins, a professor of pathology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.</p><p>Adkins performs plasma exchanges regularly to help patients with chronic conditions such as autoimmune disorders. He said the treatment is also used in serious circumstances such as organ failure or sepsis.</p><h2 id="109ebfd5-b3eb-4eca-a26d-676eae4aeea0"><strong>Should you get a plasma exchange for longevity?</strong></h2><p>Plasma exchange therapy is typically used for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/jca.22043">specific conditions</a> like Guillain-Barre Syndrome, and is reserved for more extreme cases, Dr. Ryan Marino, a toxicologist and professor of emergency medicine at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, told Business Insider.</p><p>Johnson faced some backlash from medical experts on X for seemingly commodifying a treatment that can be crucial for people with chronic illnesses, or life-saving in emergencies.</p><p>"It's not supposed to be boutique medicine; it's supposed to be evidence-based medicine," Adkins said.</p><p>Undergoing plasma treatment at a longevity clinic may not make sense for several reasons.</p><p>For one, people who aren't experiencing organ failure or other life-threatening medical conditions naturally remove toxins are naturally via the liver and kidneys.</p><p>Plasma exchange is also unlikely to help remove environmental contaminants such as <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microplastics-penises-testicles-male-fertility-plastic-health-environment-2024-7">microplastics</a>, a growing concern for long-term health since the procedure involves plastic bags and tubing, and the components are exposed to plastics during processing.</p><p>It's also a misconception that plasma exchange completely replaces the plasma since some amount needs to continue circulating in your body while you're alive, like changing your oil while the car is running.</p><p>Much of what we know about the safety and potential benefits of plasma exchange comes from data on people who donate plasma — which not only doesn't cost anything, you can even get paid for it.</p><p>Removing plasma can lower a person's lipid levels, including <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/treatments/high-cholesterol">"bad" cholesterol</a>. However, this is temporary because plasma regenerates quickly, which is why it can be safely removed or donated.</p><p>Marino and Adkins said the interest in plasma exchanges for longevity is part of an enduring fascination with cleansing our bodies from toxins, dating back to ancient times and antique procedures like bloodletting.</p><p>"It sounds plausible that cleaning your blood or plasma would provide benefits, especially if you believe that there are such toxins circulating that could be removed," Marino said.</p><p>If you're interested in living a longer, healthier life, there are plenty of other <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quick-life-hacks-increase-longevity-2023-8">science-based longevity strategies</a>, including eating a nutritious diet, getting regular exercise, and sleeping enough.</p><p>"There are a lot of really meaningful things you can do to improve your health. Maybe people's efforts might be better served exploring some of those inventions," Adkins said.</p>

Aside from tariffs, another way to do that is through partnerships.</span></p><p><span>That's what Stellantis — the parent company of Jeep, Ram, and Fiat — did when it </span><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bmw-stellantis-renault-auto-giants-on-chinese-ev-competition-2024-10"><span>teamed up with Leapmotor</span></a><span> to sell EVs outside of China. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Viktor Bout is brokering weapons sales to Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen, per The Wall Street Journal.</li><li>Bout was released in a prisoner swap for Brittney Griner after a decade in US custody.</li></ul><p>The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/viktor-bout-convicted-arms-dealer-russian-prison-swap-brittney-griner-2022-8">notorious Russian arms dealer</a>, who was <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/merchant-death-viktor-bout-arms-dealer-russia-politics-britney-griner-2023-9">exchanged for US basketball star Brittney Griner</a> two years ago, is trying to sell weapons to the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.wsj.com/world/russia/putins-merchant-of-death-is-back-in-the-arms-business-this-time-selling-to-the-houthis-10b7f521">according to The Wall Street Journal.</a></p><p><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/viktor-bout-convicted-arms-dealer-russian-prison-swap-brittney-griner-2022-8">Viktor Bout,</a> sometimes dubbed the "Merchant of Death," was arrested in a US sting operation in 2008, having spent decades smuggling Soviet-made weapons from Europe to the Middle East and Africa.</p><p>He was later convicted on multiple charges, including conspiracy to kill American citizens and officials and delivery of anti-aircraft missiles.</p><p>After serving a decade in US custody, he was released in 2022 as part of a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-viktor-bout-brittney-griner-during-prisoner-swap-exchange-report-2022-12">high-profile prisoner swap</a> for Griner, who had been detained in Russia after bringing a small amount of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/brittney-griner-had-a-prescription-for-medical-marijuana-lawyers-say-2022-7">cannabis oil</a> into the country.</p><p>Following his release, Bout appeared to have shifted his focus to politics, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/viktor-bout-joins-far-right-russian-party-could-run-for-parliament-2022-12">joining a pro-Kremlin ultranationalist party</a> and winning a local assembly seat.</p><p>However, according to the Journal, he is back in the business of brokering arms deals — <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pentagon-fears-russias-viktor-bout-could-restart-old-arms-business-2022-12">a fear that Pentagon officials expressed</a> just days after his release.</p><p>Citing sources familiar with the matter, including a European security official, the Journal reported that Bout was present at a negotiation in Moscow in August, in which the Houthis sought to negotiate the purchase of $10 million worth of automatic weapons.</p><p>The sources told the publication that two Houthi representatives had traveled to Moscow under the cover of buying vehicles and pesticides.</p><p>They told the Journal that they did not know if the deal was being negotiated on behalf of the Kremlin or just with its quiet support.</p><p>The Kremlin did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.</p><p>According to the people familiar with the matter speaking to the Journal, the deliveries, mostly of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-sniper-in-ukraine-prefer-soviet-rifles-easier-get-bullets-2024-4">AK-74s</a>, could start as early as October under the cover of food supplies.</p><p>Houthi rebels have repeatedly attacked commercial shipping in the Red Sea since last year, though some attacks have targeted Israeli and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/houthi-rebels-say-downed-30m-reaper-drone-yemen-eighth-loss-2024-9">US military vessels</a>.</p><p>The US and Western allies launched counterattacks to thwart these efforts, which have had major economic implications.</p><p>According to an April Defense Intelligence Agency <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.dia.mil/Portals/110/Images/News/Military_Powers_Publications/YEM_Houthi-Attacks-Pressuring-International-Trade.pdf">report</a>, container shipping through the Red Sea has declined massively, alternative shipping routes are increasing voyage costs, and insurance premiums for Red Sea transits have spiked.</p><p>"Currently, we are seeing premiums as high as 2% on vessel value for a single Red Sea transit amid fluctuating insurer appetite," Louise Nevill, UK CEO, marine, cargo &amp; logistics, with broker Marsh, told <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/red-sea-insurance-costs-soar-houthi-shipping-threats-loom-sources-say-2024-09-19/">Reuters</a> earlier this month. That's compared to a figure 0.7% just weeks earlier.</p><p>In January, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.state.gov/secretary-antony-j-blinken-remarks-to-the-press-20/"><u>told reporters at a press conference</u></a> that the Houthis' attacks on international shipping are "a threat to everyone."</p><p>The Houthis have also launched drones and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/houthi-missile-israel-air-defense-system-iran-2024-9">missiles at Israel</a>, which they say is in support of Palestinians in Gaza.</p><p>For months, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-may-arm-houthi-rebels-anti-ship-missiles-us-intel-2024-7">US intelligence agencies have warned</a> that Russia might <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/iran-helping-houthis-try-secure-russia-ship-missiles-red-sea-2024-9">arm Houthi rebels with anti-ship missiles</a> in retaliation for US support for Ukraine, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.wsj.com/world/middle-east/u-s-launches-effort-to-stop-russia-from-arming-houthis-with-antiship-missiles-98131a8a">according to the Journal.</a></p><p>"These attacks are having a real effect on the prices that people have to pay for food, for medicine, for energy," Blinken said. "Ships have to get diverted to other places, insurance rates go up, and the basic principle of freedom of navigation is what's at stake."</p><p>While the weapons deal reportedly orchestrated by Viktor Bout does not involve anti-ship missiles, it would still represent a notable Russian intervention in the ongoing Red Sea crisis.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Abaxx is a new commodities exchange that aims to stabilize prices and aid the energy transition.</li><li>"Trade and network keeps the world at peace," Abaxx's CEO told BI.</li></ul><p>The race to clean-up the global economy is on.</p><p>Investment in the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-renewable-energy-transition-solar-electric-vehicles-hit-records-2024-2">energy transition</a> — a broad shift from fossil-based energy production systems to renewable resources like wind and solar power — hit $1.8 billion in 2023, with countries like China and the United States leading the charge, according to BloombergNEF, an energy research company. The International Energy Agency says total investment in clean energy could reach $2 trillion by the end of the year.</p><p>But the shift to a cleaner, lower-carbon world doesn't depend solely on the work of government officials, legislators, or even major businesses. It also hinges on players working behind the scenes to secure the prices of key commodities like liquefied natural gas, essential for electricity generation and heating, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fund-carbon-removal-corporates-avoid-bad-credits-2023-2">carbon offsets</a>, which help companies counteract the impact of their carbon emissions.</p><p>A new Singapore-based commodities exchange called Abaxx, which launched in June, is working to do that by providing companies, governments, and project developers with a transparent marketplace for their trades. Commodities markets help stabilize prices by helping suppliers and consumers figure out fair prices, hedge against volatile price changes, and execute efficient and transparent transactions.</p><p>Exchanges like Abaxx play a role in this because they help lock in prices and mitigate drastic fluctuations in the future. Abaxx deals in futures contracts, legally binding agreements to buy or sell commodities at a specified future date. Three regionally deliverable liquified natural gas contracts and two carbon offset contracts are already trading on the exchange. It's working on launching futures contracts for gold and battery metals, like lithium, a component in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-tesla-cheaper-electric-vehicle-battery-technology-lithium-shift-2023-3">batteries that power EVs like Tesla</a>.</p><p>Josh Crumb, the CEO and founder of Abaxx, says unclear pricing can lead to higher and more volatile prices<strong> </strong>for consumers while also forcing commodity producers to navigate turbulent investment cycles.</p><p>"If we look at the battery supply chain, nickel sulfate, lithium, cobalt, these things have gone through huge swings of boom and bust over the last couple of years," Crumb told Business Insider. "The main reason why is we don't have a lot of market transparency so that people can forward plan, price, hedge, all of that."</p><p>Crumb first realized that the commodity industry needed more innovation when he was working as a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rip-goldman-sachs-wall-street-investment-bank-dead-2023-11">strategist at Goldman Sachs</a> in the years following the 2008 financial crisis. That coincided with the end of the commodities boom of the 2000s, during which the prices of many commodities, from food to oil to chemicals, had drastically surged.</p><p>Now, with trading in full swing, Crumb hopes Abaxx will play a role in stabilizing what he sees as the next commodity investment cycle — marked not just by a need for new commodities to facilitate the energy transition but also a surge in electrification.</p><p>"When people speak of the energy transition to a lower carbon economy, they are usually speaking of replacing internal combustion engines with electric vehicles, with electricity supplied by low carbon renewables, hydro, and nuclear power. This will lead to a dramatic increase in electricity consumption," a representative for Crumb wrote to Business Insider by email. Between 2022 and 2050, global electricity generation is expected to surge at a faster rate than it did over the past decade, according to a report from the International Energy Agency.</p><p>Most importantly, though, exchanges like Abaxx could play a critical role in geopolitics, Crumb said. "You want more transparency; you want more markets because we think that leads to more peace," he said. "We think trade and networks keeps the world at peace."</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>"Shang-Chi" star Simu Liu called out two boba tea entrepreneurs who appeared on an episode of "Dragons' Den."</li><li>They were promoting their new drink, which they said was healthier than regular boba tea.</li></ul><p>Simu Liu is in the middle of a brewing business feud over a popular Asian drink.</p><p>The "Shang-Chi" actor called out a pair of entrepreneurs from Québec during a Thursday episode of "Dragons' Den," the Canadian version of "Shark Tank."</p><p>Entrepreneurs Sébastien Fiset and Jess Frenette, who founded the bottled popping <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/taiwan-original-boba-tea-starbucks-chun-shui-tang-competition-tptea-2024-7">bubble tea</a> brand called Bobba, were asking for funding in exchange for 18% of their company's ownership, per <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/asian-america/simu-liu-criticizes-bobba-cultural-appropriation-rcna175209">NBC</a>.</p><p>The duo was marketing it as a healthier alternative to the "trendy, sugar drink you are queuing up for, and you are never quite sure about its content."</p><p>The judges were given the drink to taste. When asked if he liked the drink, Liu, who joined the show as a panelist in its 19th season, said, "I thought it was fine."</p><p>"But I'm concerned about this idea of disrupting or disturbing bubble tea," he said in response to the duo's marketing strategy.</p><p>When his co-judge Manjit Minhas argued that not everything had to remain traditional, Liu said: "But there's also the issue of cultural appropriation."</p><p>"There's the issue of taking something that's very distinctly Asian in its identity, and quote-unquote, making it better, which I have an issue with," Liu added.</p><p>Liu, a general partner at the venture capital fund Markham Valley Ventures, called Fiset and Frenette out for not including the origins of boba, which is a Taiwanese drink, on the cans of their products.</p><p>According to Liu's LinkedIn, Markham Valley Ventures invests in minority-led startups and Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) businesses.</p><p>Liu said on "Dragons' Den" that he started his venture company for a lot of reasons but "primarily to uplift minority entrepreneurs."</p><p>"And not only do I feel like this is not happening here, but that I would be uplifting a business that is profiting off of something that feels so dear to my cultural heritage," he said of Bobba.</p><p>Liu further asked how the duo were paying respect to "this very Asian drink" and who was on their staff and "cap table."</p><p>Fiset told Liu that the Canada-based duo had traveled to Taiwan to meet with their partners there, who he called "part of our team."</p><p>The exchange on "Dragons' Den" has gone viral on social media, with people on TikTok and Instagram calling Bobba out and accusing the brand of cultural appropriation.</p><p>As of press time, the most viewed clip of the exchange, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@cbcgem/video/7424242804861324549?lang=en">posted</a> by CBC Gem on TikTok, has been viewed more than 8.2 million times.</p><p>The clip has sparked parodies on TikTok.</p><p>One TikTok clip, posted by user Winniedapoo, has been seen 3.1 million times as of press time. In the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@wenniedapoo/video/7424908191114235168">clip</a>, the TikTok user films himself drinking boba with the overlaid caption: "Felt like drinking my ethnical drink today that 'I'm never quite sure about its content.'"</p><p>In an apology statement on Bobba's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.instagram.com/bobbaofficiel/p/DBFG-Z5xE-8/?img_index=1">Instagram</a> on Monday, Fiset and Frenette said that Liu "raised very valid points regarding cultural appropriation" and that they "welcome this learning opportunity."</p><p>"When we said, 'You're never quite sure about its contents,' we were not referring to the traditional bubble tea formula found in specialized shops, nor were we criticizing it," the statement said.</p><p>"What we were comparing it to is the other ready-to-drink products like ours found in big box stores," it added.</p><h2 id="f35e0085-1744-4a9d-9b02-fd2f8e852100">Not the first time Liu's been vocal about race</h2><p>Liu on Saturday posted a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@simuliu/video/7424961636139666730?lang=en&amp;q=simu%20liu%20bubble%20tea&amp;t=1728967087373">TikTok</a> saying he appreciated the outpouring of support for his stance, but that he condemned any harassment and death threats directed toward the owners of Bobba.</p><p>"It's never OK to make threats, it's never OK to bully and harass online," he said.</p><p>Liu has been outspoken about race issues.</p><p>In 2021, he <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/shang-chi-simu-liu-response-film-as-experiment-comment-2021-8">clapped back at</a> Disney's former CEO Bob Chapek, who said that the upcoming "Shang-Chi" release would be an "interesting experiment."</p><p>Liu took to Instagram and <a target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow" href="https://twitter.com/SimuLiu/status/1426464028138762245"><u>X</u></a> to address Chapek's comments, writing, "We are not an 'interesting experiment."</p><p>In June 2021, he said a show he was on, "Kim's Convenience," had a team of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/simu-liu-kims-conveniance-writers-never-gave-asian-actors-stories-2021-6">"overwhelmingly white" writers.</a></p><p>The global boba tea industry — or bubble tea as it is known in Asia — is estimated to be worth billions. In July, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.alliedmarketresearch.com/bubble-tea-market">Allied Market Research</a> pegged its value at $3.1 billion in 2023, and projected that the industry would be worth $5.4 billion by 2033.</p><p>Representatives for Liu and Bobba didn't respond to a request for comment from Business Insider, sent outside business hours.</p>
