Former Pakistan prime minister <keyword id="19914692" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="imran-khan" source="keywords">Imran Khan</keyword> on Wednesday accused the Accountability Court of deceiving him by calling him for the hearing in the <keyword id="19914857" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="toshakhana" source="keywords">Toshakhana</keyword> corruption case to only mark the attendance but instead sentencing him and his wife to 14 years in jail. Khan, 71 and his wife <keyword id="20071773" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bushra-bibi" source="keywords">Bushra Bibi</keyword>, 49, were sentenced on Wednesday by Accountability Court Judge Mohammad Bashir during the hearing at Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail, where the former premier is incarcerated. In the Toshakhana corruption case, he is accused of retaining expensive state gifts they received during his tenure as Pakistan's premier. "I have been deceived as I was only called to mark my attendance for the hearing," said the <keyword id="6367495" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="PTI" source="Orion">PTI</keyword> founder. Khan and his wife were also barred from holding any public office for 10 years and slapped with a fine of Rs 787 million each. Bushra Bibi, 49, did not appear before the court on Wednesday. At the outset of the hearing, Judge Bashir asked Khan if he recorded his statement. To this, the former premier said that he would submit his statement once his lawyers came. "Why are you in a hurry? Even yesterday, the conviction was announced in haste," the ex-prime minister said, referring to the verdict in the cipher case a day earlier. "My lawyers are not here yet. I will submit the statement after showing it to them when they come," Khan said, adding that he had appeared before the court only to mark his attendance. He was then told to submit his statement immediately and "not waste the court's time". He then exited the courtroom, after which the court sentenced the ex-premier and his wife in absentia. Following the verdict, Bushra Bibi, who was not present in court when the sentence was announced, arrived at the Adiala jail and surrendered before the authorities. Khan's sister Aleema Khan said that the "judicial system has buried itself" today. The sentence comes just a day after a special court established under the Official Secrets Act sentenced Khan and Qureshi to 10 years in prison for the breach of state secrets. The latest conviction and sentencing are Khan's third since 2022 when he was ousted from power. Previously, Khan was convicted in the Toshakhana case on August 5, and sentenced to three years' imprisonment. The Islamabad High Court (IHC) later suspended his sentence, however, a division bench later rejected Khan's petition seeking the suspension of the conviction. The previous Toshakhana case was filed by the Election Commission of Pakistan in the charges of hiring the sale of state gifts.

Pakistan's government has made overnight changes in the anti-corruption laws to make them more stringent, hours before former premier Imran <keyword id="6355601" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="khan" source="Orion">Khan</keyword>'s appearance before the country's apex anti-graft investigation agency on Tuesday in a corruption case. Senate Chairman <keyword id="6359505" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sadiq-sanjrani" source="Orion">Sadiq Sanjrani</keyword>, who is working as acting president in the absence of President <keyword id="1670707" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="arif-alvi" source="Orion">Arif Alvi</keyword>, who is away on pilgrimage, issued an ordinance to empower the <keyword id="418459" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="national-accountability-bureau" source="Orion">National Accountability Bureau</keyword> (NAB) to arrest a suspect during inquiry period and also allow the NAB court to remand a suspect for 30 days in custody after arrest instead of earlier 15 days. The ordinance was issued at the advice of Prime Minister <keyword id="11977746" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shehbaz-sharif" source="Orion">Shehbaz Sharif</keyword>. "The prime minister's advice in para 6 of the summary is approved. The National Accountability (Amendment) Ordinance, 2023, is signed and promulgated," a notification signed by Sanjrani stated. The changes were made around midnight and just hours before Khan was set to appear before the NAB. Khan, 70, left with his wife <keyword id="6775193" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bushra-bibi" source="Orion">Bushra Bibi</keyword> from Lahore to Islamabad as both were to appear before the NAB in the Al-Qadir Trust case, his media team announced in a WhatsApp message. The Al-Qadir Trust case alleges that the PTI chief and his wife obtained billions of rupees and land from a real estate firm for legalising Rs 50 billion that was identified and returned to the country by the UK during the previous government led by Khan. The Al-Qadir Trust case is about corruption of at least Rs 50 billion. Khan has denied any wrongdoing and accused the government of targeting him for political reasons. Interestingly, the same government earlier had changed the NAB law to reduce the remand period to 14 days from the original 90 days. But it again enhanced the remand duration to 30 days. The NAB laws have been quite controversial as successive governments used them to silence opposition. Several current Cabinet members, including Prime Minister <keyword id="17435" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sharif" source="Orion">Sharif</keyword>, remained in the NAB custody for months over charges of corruption when Khan was prime minister.
