<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">Reuters/NASA</div></div></div>Eight days from now a 100-foot-diameter asteroid named "2013 TX68" will fly past Earth for the second time in recorded history.One hundred feet is about the size of a blue whale, but to be clear, 2013 TX68 is not considered a <a href="http://www.minorplanetcenter.org/iau/lists/Dangerous.html">potentially hazardous asteroid</a> and poses no catastrophic threat to human life on Earth.Still, NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) has had its eye on this space rock since it was discovered in 2013.The European Space Agency's NEO Coordination Center <a href="http://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/sbdb.cgi?sstr=2013TX68;cad=1">first spotted</a> the asteroid while it was passing at a distance of 1.3 million miles away.Now, according to the <a href="http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.php?feature=4888">latest updates</a> on the asteroid's location and orbit, the CNEOS has estimated that "2013 TX68" will fly past Earth on March 8 at a safe distance of 3 million miles away.That's a distance of about 12.5 times farther away than the Moon is from Earth.Unfortunately for asteroid spotters, this means that we likely won't have a chance to see the asteroid upon its closest approach."There is no concern whatsoever regarding this asteroid - unless you were interested in seeing it with a telescope," Paul Chodas, the manager of CNEOS, said in <a href="http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.php?feature=4888">a press release</a>. "Prospects for observing this asteroid, which were not very good to begin with, are now even worse because the asteroid is likely to be farther away, and therefore dimmer than previously believed."Chodas admitted that because this asteroid is hard to spot, the data on its location is too sparse for the CNEOS to map its orbit completely. And this does leave a bit of uncertainty about exactly where the asteroid will be and when.For instance, there's a small chance that on March 8, 2016, this asteroid could get as close to our planet as 15,000 miles away. That's still too far to do any harm, fortunately.<h2>Twice as powerful as the Chelyabinsk event</h2><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><a href="http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.php?feature=4888">NASA/JPL-Caltech</a>An illustration of 2013 TX68's orbit.</div></div></div>Even if 2013 TX68 were going to make contact with Earth, an asteroid this size poses no catastrophic threat to human life.While it's currently the size of a blue whale, Earth's atmosphere would make quick work of the asteroid, whittling it down to a fraction of its current size.But it could still cause some damage.For some idea of just how much, NASA calculated what might happen if 2013 TX68 were to enter Earth's atmosphere.It would likely generate a radiant fireball that would explode close to the surface, but before hitting the ground. Such an explosion is called an air burst, and it's the blast wave from air bursts like these that can be dangerous.The Chelyabinsk event in 2013, for example, generated three different air bursts, the most powerful of which released the equivalent energy of 500,000 tons of TNT.2013 TX68 is about twice the size of the asteroid that broke up over Chelyabinsk, Russia, and NASA calculated that it would release twice as much energy - or about the same as 1 million tons of TNT. But, again, the chances of this happening on March 8 are zero.However, March 8 won't be the last time we hear of 2013 TX68. It's expected to pass by Earth three more times this century in 2017, 2046, and 2097. But the odds of an impact are slim to none.CNEOS estimated that the odds of an impact on Sep. 28, 2017 are 1 in 250 million - you have a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/chances-of-dying-unnaturally-2016-2">far better chance</a> of dying from a lightning strike than from this asteroid. But first, <a href="https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/immortality-bus-with-presidential-candidate-zoltan#/story">he's raising $25,000</a> in an Indiegogo campaign to build the tricked-out bus. Once the funding period ends, Istvan plans to depart from San Francisco just weeks later with a crew of futurists, doctors, activists, and journalists. "We aim to replicate the great American bus tours of the 1960s, but in the 21st Century," he tells Business Insider. "We'll have robots, drones and a biohacking lab on board. Lots of fun stuff!" To Istvan, transhumanists are people who want to use science and technology to radically improve human life and experience. He estimates that between 1 to 3 million people around the world identify as transhumanist, with about 150,000 of them in the US. About 90% of the movement is under 35.The transhumanist party has 65 people involved, including four officers, twelve advisers, and five managers. Everyone is a volunteer.The platform has three pieces: Funding: Get people to spend resources on overcoming biological aging and death. This futurist presidential candidate is about to drive a bus-sized coffin across America

It's slated to swing by Tuesday night at 11:54 p.m. ET at a distance of about 162,000 miles (261,000 kilometers) - roughly two-thirds the way to the moon.We first heard about it via an email from Slooh, a company that airs live views of space, and they're hosting a <a href="http://live.slooh.com/stadium/live/asteroid-2017-bx-rerun-flies-by-the-earth">broadcast about 2017 BX</a> - which they've nicknamed "Rerun" - starting at 5:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday.Asteroid 2017 BX, according to Slooh and <a href="http://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/sbdb.cgi?sstr=2017%20BX;orb=1">NASA JPL data</a>, is similar to asteroid 2017 AG13, which flew by Earth on Monday, January 9. An asteroid is about to slip between Earth and the moon - and it'll be the second in 3 weeks

It's super mini. Forget about spotting it with your naked eye or even a pair of binoculars.In fact, according to Dan Bartlett, an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tried-see-green-comet-fail-2023-2">astrophotographer in California</a>, asteroid 2024 PT5 is so faint that it's "well beyond the limits of most of the best amateur telescopes."That won't stop him from trying to photograph it, though.From his <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/darkest-skies-by-state-watch-space-events-stargazing">dark-skies </a>vantage point in the middle of the Sierra Nevada mountains, Bartlett thinks he might be able to catch the asteroid by imaging all night long with his sophisticated telescope equipment on an extra-dark night when the main moon is not in the sky."<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-photograph-full-moon-according-to-astrophotographers-top-tips-2024-9">The image probably won't look like much</a> but you never know until you try," Bartlett told BI in an email.However, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/images-show-james-webb-space-telescope-stronger-sharper-than-hubble-2022-7">telescopes</a> used by professional astronomers should be able to image 2024 PT5 easily, according to Marcos.<div type="image" title="four pixelated blurry images of white dots in distant space with one long dot circled in purple in the center" height="928" width="936" msid="113609377" hostid="261" sizebytes="78262"></div>So stay tuned for pictures.<h2 id="90a35d03-b346-44fa-a648-63841dcaf537">When the mini-moon returns</h2>The asteroid won't make its closest <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/adam-driver-asks-nasa-save-earth-from-world-ending-asteroids-2023-3">approach to Earth</a> until after it loses mini-moon status, though.On January 8, 2025, according to NASA, it will skim past Earth at a distance of about 1.1 million miles (1.8 million kilometers).For reference, the main moon (the big one you see in the sky at night) is, on average, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mind-boggling-nasa-photo-shows-moon-distance-from-earth-2022-10">about 238,855 miles (384,400 kilometers) away from us</a>. It will probably still be impossible to see with binoculars or the naked eye.After that, our temporary moonlet won't fly by again until 2055.It's not our first mini-moon and it won't be the last. Another asteroid, called 2022 NX1, briefly fell into Earth's orbit in 2022. Astronomers declared it to be a mini-moon, or a "short-term natural satellite," and determined that it would return again in 2051.The situation brings Bartlett to a simple conclusion, which you may have reached too: "Space is neat," he said.

"<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fake-moon-asteroid-orbiting-sun-alongside-earth-astronomers-discover-2023-6">Mini-moons</a>" like this are ideal targets for mining, according to Carlos de la Fuente Marcos, one of the scientists who charted 2024 PT5's path around our planet.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/asteroid-mining-company-earth-startups-raw-materials-cobalt-gold-platinum-2021-3">Asteroid mining</a> could someday help humans travel further out into the cosmos and extend our presence through the solar system. That's because some asteroids contain valuable metals like iron or platinum, as well as water.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-plan-colonize-mars-plan-unrealistic-scientists-explain-2023-10">Elon Musk's vision of a city on Mars</a>, for example, depends on asteroid mining. Temporary moons like 2024 PT5 could be a key stepping stone."Mini-moons are very important for the nascent global <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-helping-private-companies-build-business-moon-make-lunar-billions-2023-6">space economy</a>," Marcos told Business Insider in an email. Because they come so close to Earth and take a sojourn in our orbit, he added, "they are among the objects easier to reach using low-cost missions."<h2 id="462c4c69-18b1-4a3f-8e7d-7cb0491d6b39">Asteroids can be worth quintillions</h2>Asteroid 2024 PT5 may not be worth much, since scientists think it's made of basalt.It's basically "a giant boulder," Teddy Kareta, a planetary scientist at the Lowell Observatory, told Business Insider.But some asteroids contain so much metal that they're <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-visit-psyche-asteroid-worth-more-than-entire-world-economy-2023-10">worth more than our entire global economy</a>.Take Psyche, for example, an asteroid that NASA is sending a spacecraft to for scientific study, since the agency believes it to be the core of a long-dead planet.Psyche's metal-rich makeup — mostly iron and nickel — makes it worth an estimated $100 quintillion if it were here on Earth.<div type="image" title="graphic of what the asteroid is thought to look like" height="900" width="1600" msid="113817842" hostid="261" sizebytes="175866"></div>Some asteroids even have precious metals like platinum, gold, and cobalt.Nobody has mined an asteroid yet, though <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-video-osiris-rex-probe-landing-on-asteroid-kicking-dust-2020-10">NASA punched one</a> in 2020 to grab scientific samples from it.Some startups are trying to figure out how to start mining space rocks, and do it in a cost-effective way. Flying to an asteroid isn't cheap.One of them, called <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/asteroid-mining-startup-has-booked-its-first-test-mission-spacex-2022-6">AstroForge, has launched a small probe with SpaceX</a>, though the spacecraft wasn't able to conduct the testing they'd planned, according to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.space.com/asteroid-mining-astroforge-docking-mission-2025">Space.com</a>. The company is now planning two more missions, which it hopes will culminate in its first landing on a metallic asteroid in 2025.<h2 id="e5b0dd4a-bb61-4c4d-a49c-2d9e9a2960a9">Pit stops on the way to Mars</h2>Long-distance <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-invest-mars-pulsed-plasma-rocket-shorten-space-time-travel-2024-7">deep-space missions</a>, especially if they're carrying humans and cargo, will have a fuel problem.Fuel is heavy, so the less of it you have to load onto a spacecraft the better. On the long flight to Mars or other planets, asteroids could become gas stations.That's because <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://academic.oup.com/mnrasl/article/506/1/L6/6298231?login=false">research</a> <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1029/2018JE005584">suggests</a> that many asteroids in Earth's neighborhood are rich in water, which can be mined and split into its elementary components — hydrogen and oxygen, both of which are critical for making rocket fuel.Mini-moons are perfect places to start, some scientists think, because of their proximity to Earth but also because of how small they are.It takes an immense amount of rocket fuel to escape Earth's powerful gravitational pull. But little asteroids don't have much gravity, making it easy to leapfrog off of them."It only takes a puff of fuel to leave the mini-moon and head back towards Earth," Richard Binzel, a planetary scientist at MIT, previously told <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.livescience.com/space/space-exploration/undiscovered-minimoons-may-orbit-earth-could-they-help-us-become-an-interplanetary-species">Live Science</a>.<h2 id="bf8bc193-7a0a-4a09-9d9c-2c6ac7e8d411">Mini-moon missions at the ready</h2>One problem with mini-moons is that scientists sometimes don't see them coming until a few weeks before they're captured in our planet's orbit.Asteroid 2024 PT5, for example, was first identified as a mini-moon in early September and will only be in Earth's orbit for about 57 days.That's a tight timeline for preparing and launching a mining mission. And over the next few decades, Elon Musk is hoping to send 42,000 of these satellites to space, 15 times the number of operational satellites in orbit today. It's part of <keyword id="7612156" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="starlink">Starlink</keyword>, the expansive constellation from Musk and <keyword id="6360701" type="DEFINITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="spacex">SpaceX</keyword> that hopes to bring the world low-latency high-speed <keyword id="6357247" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Internet">internet</keyword>, promising no more buffering and nearly instantaneous internet in every corner of the world. But experts worry it may come at a hefty cost for space exploration.Nearly half of the world's population does not have access to the internet, because most internet options require an extensive track of costly underground cables, leaving many rural locations offline. And while <keyword id="6358065" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="satellite">satellite</keyword> internet can reach those areas...Dave Mosher: Traditional satellite internet is provided by a bus-sized spacecraft that is launched 22,236 miles into space in orbit around <keyword id="6359982" type="LOCATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="earth">Earth</keyword>.Narrator: That distance means the satellite can reach places that cables can't. But since that one satellite is meant to service a lot of people, its data capability is limited, which then limits connection speeds. And that signal has to travel a long way, creating a lot of lag. This is where Elon Musk and SpaceX come in.Mosher: Starlink is a globe-encircling network of internet-beaming satellites that is trying to get you online no matter where you are in the world.Narrator: And there's a rather persuading element for SpaceX as well.Mosher: Elon Musk has said he's just trying to grab a small percentage of a trillion-dollar-a-year telecommunications industry around the world. If SpaceX can pull this off, the company could net about $30 to $50 billion a year.Narrator: Musk and SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell say that much money could single-handedly fund the development of Starlink, Starship, and SpaceX's Mars-launch infrastructure. As of early October, SpaceX has launched more than 700 satellites into orbit, with a plan to release a total of 12,000 over the next five years, half of them by the end of 2024. And Musk wants to add another 30,000 to that, coming to a total of 42,000 satellites circling Earth. All of these satellites will also be much closer, anywhere from 200 to 400 miles above the planet in low-Earth orbit.Mosher: This reduces the connection delay that is found with traditional internet satellite.Narrator: Once in orbit, these Starlink satellites will be constantly on the move, which is why so many are necessary.Mosher: The problem is you have to have many satellites orbiting to make up for the fact that you can't stay in one spot above the Earth. Because you need several satellites overhead at any one time to cover many users.Narrator: Every satellite will connect with several others via laser beams, creating something like the network's backbone. And to actually bring this internet into your home, you'll need to get a pizza-sized antenna. This phased-array antenna can aim its beam at whatever satellite is overhead, which will maintain an internet signal in your home. But this scheme isn't without problems. Starlink satellites are bright. They reflect the sunlight and shine it back towards Earth, so they end up looking like bright moving stars. As cool as it may look, that comes with problems.Mosher: Starlink satellites are most visible in the night sky right before dawn and right after dusk, which is the exact time that astronomers are hunting for near-Earth objects or asteroids, objects that could hit Earth and possibly harm us.Narrator: And as more satellites go up, so does the likelihood that they'll interfere with astronomers' views. Mosher: If Starlink continues to be a problem for these type of sky surveys, we may not have as much notice as we want to detect a near-Earth object and thwart it and prevent it from hitting Earth.Narrator: Beyond detecting deadly asteroids, the wall of satellites could also obstruct the search for new planets or even black holes.Mosher: SpaceX realized it had to do something, and it did. It created what's called a DarkSat, which is a satellite that has all of its shiny parts coated in a very black, dark material.Narrator: It also tried adding visors to shield those shiny parts from the ground. But unless the satellites are cloaked like a spaceship in "Star Trek," technology that does not exist, none of this will fully solve the problem. And even if it did, there is a much bigger issue at hand.Mosher: There's a concern about space debris, because when you have so many satellites in the closest, tightest, densest orbits around Earth, there's a higher chance that those satellites could collide with each other or with other satellites.Narrator: Those crashes would create clouds of debris that can orbit the Earth for years, decades, or even centuries.Mosher: And that debris can then disable or cause other satellites to crash into each other, creating even more debris, and this problem spirals out of control in an effect called the Kessler syndrome. And if we reach that, then essentially space is too unsafe to access.Narrator: To be clear, the risk of a runaway Kessler syndrome is very low.Mosher: But the potential impacts of that are so high that scientists are working very hard to control such an event from ever happening.Narrator: SpaceX has said its satellites can automatically move out of the way to avoid collisions. But dozens of SpaceX satellites are already disabled and can't move at all, posing a potential threat. And those concerned with SpaceX's plans are lobbying the FCC to rein in the company and more strictly regulate low-Earth orbit. And that could make it more expensive and harder to deploy the planned 42,000 satellites. But it doesn't stop at Starlink.Amazon's Kuiper project, OneWeb, China's Hongyan, and other projects are looking to challenge SpaceX by launching their own global networks of hundreds or thousands of satellites. If they all got their way with little to no regulation, we could end up with 100,000 satellites encasing our planet within the next 10 years, dramatically increasing the risk of blocking off space for everyone.

Supreme Court tells Delhi government: No action against Facebook India Head till October 15

If you've been feeling overwhelmed at work lately, you are not alone as a new <keyword id="10387" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword> study has shown that the pandemic has increased the feeling of <keyword id="84644" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="burnout">burnout</keyword> at work among about 30 per cent of workers. Longer workdays have contributed significantly to these feelings of burnout amid the pandemic, said the "<keyword id="9986408" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Work-Trend-Index">Work Trend Index</keyword>" report. Workers in Australia saw the highest increase in workday span in Microsoft Teams, with a medium increase in burnout. While workers in Germany saw very little change to workday span or feelings of burnout, said the report. "The top stressor shared globally was worry about getting Covid-19, followed by lack of separation between work and life, feeling disconnected from co-workers, and unmanageable workload or hours," Jared Spataro, Corporate Vice President for Microsoft 365, wrote in a blog post on Tuesday. The report looked at how the pandemic has impacted wellbeing at work globally. The study examined how productivity patterns in Microsoft Teams have shifted since early this year and surveyed over 6,000 information and "Firstline" workers in eight countries including Australia, Brazil, Germany, Japan, India, Singapore, the UK, and the US. Microsoft defines first-line workers as people whose primary role function is to work directly with customers or the general public. The report also includes studies from the Microsoft Research group that shed light on the surprising productivity benefits of our once-dreaded commute. The study also found that nearly 30 per cent of workers have not been provided the tech or protective equipment they need to effectively socially distance by their company. The data showed that even six months past the first work-from-home orders, people are in significantly more meetings, taking more ad hoc calls and managing more incoming chats than they did before the pandemic. After-hours chats, or chats between 5pm and midnight, have also increased. Perhaps more interestingly, the share of Microsoft Teams users sending those chats after hours has more than doubled. In other words, there is a whole group of people who never touched a keyboard after 5pm before the pandemic -- now, they do. In the study, one third of remote workers said the lack of separation between work and life is negatively impacting their wellbeing. "Commutes provide blocks of uninterrupted time for mentally transitioning to and from work, an important aspect of wellbeing and productivity," Shamsi Iqbal, Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research said in a statement. "People will say, ‘I'm happy I don't have to commute anymore. I'm saving time.' But without a routine for ramping up for work and then winding down, we're emotionally exhausted at the end of the day." Of those surveyed, 70 per cent said meditation could help decrease their work-related stress. This number increased to 83 per cent for those managing childcare or homeschooling. After India, China is now embroiled in a fresh boundary dispute with Nepal in its remote Humla district that is close to the Nepal-Tibet border. The dispute emerged after the Chinese side unilaterally constructed 11 cemented buildings in the Nepali territory and people in the Lapcha area where the buildings were constructed, brought it to the notice of the Humla administration. The area that Nepal is claiming, is remote from the district headquarters, difficult to reach, barren, unused and a treacherous one but the Chinese side can easily cross the border due to the close proximity and road access. After the Lapcha people brought the matter to the administration's notice that nine building have already been erected by the Chinese, who have also asked Nepalese to refrain from visiting across the bordering area, the Home Ministry of Nepal sent senior officials to the disputed site this week to ascertain the volume of the land encroached upon by the Chinese. Though the officials have yet to submit their report to the Home Ministry but Bishnu Bahadur Lama, Chairman of the Namkha Rural Municipality who was the first to bring the matter to the administration's notice, said that they inspected the disputed area, interacted with locals and held brief communication with Chinese security officials. "They (Chinese) told us that due to Covid pandemic, it was not possible to sit in a face to face talks urging that those 11 buildings were constructed inside Chinese territory and asked us to leave the place. Then we left. It is happening largely due to one missing pillar," Lama said. According to Lama and other Nepali officials, during the road construction in that area some eight years ago, a boundary pillar no 11 was damaged and had not been erected since. After we failed to ascertain the pillar no 11, the Chinese built the buildings whose purpose is not known, Lama said, now Chinese have barred Nepalese of that area from visiting the Lapcha area. But as per locals, that particular territory belongs to us which has been used by the Nepalese for several purposes in the past, Lama said, it was basically used for grazing by both sides. The Ministries of Home Affairs and Foreign Affairs of Nepal in Kathmandu are waiting the ground report from Humla before taking up the matter with the Chinese side. After the Nepal media started reporting about the alleged Chinese encroachment, <keyword id="9986157" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-chinese-embassy-in-kathmandu">the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu</keyword> on Tuesday issued a statement and clarified its position. China and Nepal are friendly neighbours, the statement said, China has always respected Nepal's sovereignty and territorial integrity. "The buildings mentioned by the media have been verified to be on the Chinese side of the China-Nepal border. The Nepali side may make verification again. China and Nepal have no territorial disputes. The two sides have always maintained close communication on border affairs," the statement further reads. There are news coming from Humla that China has encroached the Nepali territory and erected some buildings, former Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Kamal Thapa said: "I request the government to release the facts and truths regarding the land encroachment. Thapa has also requested with Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli to send back the Chinese from the Nepali territory immediately." Nepal and China do not have major boundary dispute except for their differences over the height of Mt. Everest. Since China came up with rock height of Mt Everest as 8,844 metre in 2005 and recognised it, Nepal declined to accept it. The accepted height of Mt Everest is 8,848 metre. Both Nepal and China are separately measuring the height of Mt Everest and the findings are yet to be announced. Dinosaurs were the true kings of the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. For millions of years, velociraptor, T-Rex, and your other favorites reigned supreme. But they weren't always on top. At first, dinos were only the size of a dog, after all. Here's how dinosaurs conquered the world. The following is a transcript of the video. Right now, paleontologists discover a new species of dinosaur every week. And it's no wonder! Dinosaurs dominated the planet for 135 million years. But they didn't start out on top.The first dinosaurs emerged around 230 million years ago during the Triassic Period. Back then, Earth looked very different. Instead of 7 continents, there was just one: Pangea. Even early dinosaurs were nothing like those Hollywood giants.Eoraptor, possibly the first true dinosaur, was puny. Especially compared to top predators of the day like some of the giant rauisuchians. Over the next 30 million years, new species of dinosaurs and amphibians developed along with the first mammals. Life was flourishing.Then, 201 million years ago, everything changed. Pangea began to tear apart. The shifting tectonic plates sparked volcanic eruptions, which - over tens of thousands years - TRIPLED the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and warmed the planet by 3 to 4 degrees Celsius. It vanquished at least 30% of all life in the process.But for some reason, maybe luck, or some helpful adaptation the dinosaurs sailed on through to the dawn of the Jurassic Period. And over the next 135 million years, they continued to spread, diversify, and evolve into some familiar faces. For example, the first tyrannosaurs sprouted up sometime around 170 million years ago. But don't get your hopes up these guys were no T. rex.Turns out, the REAL sovereign of the era was the Allosaurus. Longer than a double decker bus, it dined on sauropods with its meat cleaver teeth. Meanwhile, Pangea continued to pull apart. By 145 million years ago it began to resemble what we see today. Forming isolated pockets, where dinosaurs grew increasingly different from each other. It was the heyday of dinosaur diversity. And a new period: The Cretaceous.Meanwhile, in Argentina, giants like Patagotitan - the biggest dinosaur on record - turned up around 100 million years ago. But the most frightening of all appeared in the Western US around 68 million years ago. T. rex. The largest carnivore in history. On its own, it was a formidable predator but it turns out the T. rex likely hunted in packs.And where T. Rex did not roam, other pack hunters filled the niche. For example, in Asia, the small, yet cunning, velociraptor roamed. It was a bad time to be a mammal. And then, 66 million years ago, the Chicxulub asteroid wiped out all the dinosaurs well, almost all of them. One group remained. In fact, their descendants might be sitting outside your window right now.Birds. That's right, modern birds ARE dinosaurs!
