<ul><li>RIL, TCS, HDFC Bank retain top spots as <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword>’s most valuable companies.</li><li>India’s 500 most valuable companies have a cumulative value of ₹231 lakh crore, as per a Burgundy <keyword id="20553117" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hurun" source="keywords">Hurun</keyword> report.</li><li>Suzlon Energy, Jindal Stainless and JSW Infrastructure saw triple digit growth in value in the last one year. </li></ul>Reliance Industries, TCS and HDFC Bank retained their ranks as India’s most valuable companies respectively in the 2023 <keyword id="20554332" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="burgundy-private-hurun" source="keywords">Burgundy Private Hurun</keyword> India 500, released on Monday. The combined value of the top 10 companies remained unchanged in the last one year, at ₹73.3 lakh crore. However, the picture wasn't as rosy for the startup ecosystem. The top 10 had a mixed year, five of them seeing a robust double double digit growth in value, two of them saw single-digit growth, and three of them shed around 10% of their value. L&amp;T’s value went up by 41%, HDFC Bank’s value swelled by 35% due the merger with its parent, and ITC too saw its value swell by 24%. Notable exits &amp; big comebacks Startups, however, had a bad year with Swiggy shedding 26% of its value, Dream11’s value went down by 9.8%, and Razorpay by 8.5%. Meanwhile, in the listed space, while most new-age companies like Policybazaar, Delhivery, Zomato Paytm, saw their valuations go up, Nykaa remained an outlier as it shed 26.8% of its value. Byju’s and Pharmeasy exited the list which has a new cut off rate of ₹6,700 crore. “Startup funding and valuation continued their downward trajectory. Startups in the list cumulatively lost ₹4 lakh crore led by <keyword id="19914048" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="byjus" source="keywords">Byjus</keyword>, Dealshare, and Pharmeasy; which failed to make it to the list this year,” Hurun said. The unlisted universe had yet another disappointment. India’s most valuable unlisted company and Covid-19 vaccine maker Serum Institute of India saw its value decrease by 13% to ₹1.9 lakh crore. There have been many comeback stories as well amongst the top 500 companies. Suzlon Energy registered one of the highest value growth this year, as its value swelled by a remarkable 436%. Jindal Stainless’ value went up by 395% and JSW Infrastructure by 310%. “It indicates a rise in renewable energy and infrastructure development. For instance, INOX Wind, which was on the path to insolvency in 2017, registered a 450% growth in value and stormed into 2023 Burgundy Private <keyword id="20554331" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hurun-india" source="keywords">Hurun India</keyword> 500,” said Anas Rahman Junaid, MD and chief researcher, of Hurun India. But, 61 new companies made their debut to the list, led by industrial products with 16 new entrants, followed by financial services with 10 new entrants. Apart from Inox Wind, freshly listed R R Kabel and Welspun Corp were the notable unlisted entrants including unicorn Incred Finance, and Bengaluru-based gaming startup Gameskraft. Jio Financial Services which recently demerged from RIL is the 28th most valuable company. cumulative value of ₹231 lakh crore ($2.8 trillion). They went up from ₹212 lakh crore from June last year, but remained flat since 2021, the report says. “The 2023 Burgundy Private Hurun India 500 list is a strong confirmation of the Indian economy's solid performance in all sectors. The increase in new entrants from industrial goods shows India's rising manufacturing growth,” said Junaid. The combined value of the listed and unlisted companies which made it to the 2023 Burgundy Private Hurun India 500, is more than the combined GDP of Saudi Arabia, Switzerland and Singapore, the report said. “The 2023 Burgundy Private Hurun India 500 companies represent India’s economically strongest businesses. The reason is self-explanatory as these companies have a total value of $2.8 trillion, which is almost 90% of India’s current GDP, i.e. they are the backbone of India’s economy. Together, these 500 companies had combined sales of ₹79 lakh crore and employed 7 million staff, which is more than the working population of Switzerland,” Junaid said. The cut off for companies to enter the list went up by 13% to ₹6,700 crore.

In fact, the entry point for artists in the top ten almost quadrupled from Rs 2 crores to Rs 7.7 crores in the mere span of three years. These figures helped India land the seventh place globally in terms of art auction turnover, according to Hurun. "With rising middle-class incomes, our expectation is that Indian art will become one of the top preferred choices to 'invest' in a growing asset class and 'spend' on a meaningful lifestyle addition,” explains Anas Rahman Junaid, founder of Hurun India. He argues that India being one of the world’s oldest civilisations lends it an exponentially higher intrinsic art value compared to the status quo. This recognition will likely continue to help the Indian art sector grow at a good pace in the coming years.

in the list. After Page Industries, Motherson Sumi Systems and IT major Infosys have the highest women percentage at 41% and 40% respectively. <keyword id="6355199" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="reliance-industries" source="Orion">Reliance Industries</keyword>, which has been named as India’s most valuable company by the report, has only 18% of women employees in its workforce and hired 22,620 new female employees in the last one year. The 500 companies together employ 7.3 million people, out of which 137 companies have more than 10,000 employees and 103 companies have less than 1,000 employees, according to the report. Around 3.9 lakh new jobs were created by the companies in the list in the last one year. All the 500 companies in the list have appointed 664 women directors on their respective boards. Apollo Hospitals has the highest number of women directors out of all the companies. She power: The top 10 youngest women entrepreneurs in India

The chairman of Reliance Industries Mukesh Ambani surged to the top spot as India’s richest man. India has added 38 <keyword id="6393637" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="billionaires" source="Orion">billionaires</keyword> to its rich list, taking the total tally to 259. Even as the developed world is staring at a recession, India is cementing its position as an economic powerhouse. Nearly 65% of people in the rich list amassed a combined wealth of close to $1 trillion. This is akin to the combined GDP of Singapore and the UAE, Hurun said. Mukesh Ambani surpassed Gautam Adani, who dropped to the second spot, in spite of only a 2% growth in his wealth in the last one year. After Adani’s wealth more than halved in the last year, the gap between Ambani and Adani wealth widened by ₹3,30,000 crore. The top 10 has seen a lot of upheaval in the last one year – as only Shiv Nadar and Cyrus Poonawala were able to hold on to the positions they held last year. Gautam Adani’s brother Vinod Shantilal Adani who was the sixth richest Indian last year, exited the top 10 list this year. He is now the twelfth richest Indian after his wealth dropped by 37%. The other notable exit is Uday Kotak, the chairman of Kotak Mahindra Bank who is now the 11th richest man in the county after his wealth dropped 6% last year. However, their average wealth has decreased by 9.3%. The India Rich List added 273 new entrants and 38 new billionaires over the last year. The number of dollar billionaires also went up to 259, up 38 as compared to last year. “The trends prove that India is a shining moon in a world that is staring at recession. While the China Rich List has dropped 10% for each of this year and last year, both in terms of average wealth and in terms of the number of people that make the list. India is closing the gap,” said Anas Rahman Junaid, MD and Chief Researcher, Hurun India. India has 259 billionaires, up 38 compared to last year. While industrial products, metals &amp; mining added the greatest number of new entrants to the list. Pharma still holds the numero uno position and contributed 133 entrants to the list. “Over the past five years, many entrepreneurs have witnessed extraordinary wealth growth, some experiencing an astonishing 1,000% surge. Construction and engineering emerge as the top gainers in the top 100 list, followed closely by pharmaceuticals which has a cut-off of ₹20,000 crore,” said Anirudha Taparia, co-founder and joint CEO, 360 ONE Wealth. Funding winter &amp; founders’ wealth While 264 in the Indian rich list saw their wealth drop in the last one year, there were as many as 55 dropouts. The most notable of the dropouts is Byju Raveendran. The founder of edtech Byju’s exited the list on the back of investor markdowns. The funding winter and its ripple effects led to startup founders on the list experiencing a collective wealth dip of ₹85,000 crore. Recent policies, like the retrospective GST imposition on gaming companies and the angel tax and so on, could potentially hinder long-term wealth generation by startups, Hurun said. However, a few IPOs that stumbled last year did make a comeback. As new-age internet companies gain in value, entrepreneurs like Deepinder Goyal of Zomato and Yashish Dahiya of PB Fintech have seen their wealth increase by over 70%. Startup wealth creation will persist, albeit within a changing landscape, Junaid said. The IPO stars: Public issues and rich list debuts The stock markets also rewarded many public debuts and made their founders into billionaires. Ramesh Kunhikannan’s Kaynes Technology made a strong stock market debut. And he entered the list with a wealth of ₹8,200 crore. The spectacular listing gains provided by stock market debuts of many companies have pulled their owners into the rich list. Some of them include Jagdish Prasad Chowdhary of Titagarh Wagons, Ranjit Pendurthi of Archean Chemical Industries and Ajay P Thakker &amp; family of Jupiter Life Line Hospitals. Pavan Kumar Bajaj and Karan Bajaj of Electronics Mart India and Harsha Engineers’ Harish Rangwala and Rajendra Shantilal Shah too entered the coveted list of richest Indians after their stocks skyrocketed on debut. But there is money to be made in private markets too. Manish Kejriwal of Kedaara Capital became the first Indian Private Equity fund manager to enter the list.

The chemicals &amp; petrochemicals sector contributed the greatest number of new entrants with 20 new additions, followed by financial services (17) and software &amp; services (12). Junaid further added, “The new additions to IIFL Wealth Hurun India Rich List have occurred at a time when valuations are at a low, both in the listed and privately held companies. India is best positioned to capitalize on robust domestic demand, a stable political landscape, favourable demographics, and a sustainable external debt.” The cumulative wealth of Indians in the rich list increased by 9.4%, while average wealth has decreased by 1%. As many as 602 individuals saw their wealth increase or stay the same in the past one year. Nayar’s ranking went up nine places in the list, after the company she founded, Nykaa, went public last year. Roshni Nadar Malhotra of HCL Technologies however retained her title as the wealthiest woman on the list with ₹84,330 crore, for the second year in a row. Around 25 new women have entered into the list this year, says the report. The report further highlights that the cut-off wealth required to feature in the list has almost tripled since last year to ₹300 crore. The state of Maharashtra has banned the sale of Coronil until it receives certification from the Ayush Ministry, which looks after all things ayurved, naturopathy, homeopathy, unani, siddha and yoga. For Balkrishna, this is not the first time that he has been caught on the wrong side of things. And, it was on the basis of this fake degree that Balkrishna had procured his passport. However, the case was closed two years later due to lack of evidence. In 2012, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) also filed a case against Balkrishna over money laundering charges.
