This followed <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/worlds-fastest-production-car-16-million-316-mph-ssc-tuatara-2020-10">a controversial first run that claimed</a> to hit an average of 316 mph but was bombarded with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ssc-didnt-check-accuracy-of-record-run-video-after-backlash-2020-10">questions of legitimacy</a>, and a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ssc-tuatara-worlds-fastest-car-speed-record-second-run-supercar-2020-12">failed second</a> run due to engine problems.</p><p>The latest run took place on a 2.3-mile stretch of pavement at the Johnny Bohmer Proving Grounds at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. </p><div type="image" title="2021 SSC Tuatara Reruns Record Car Open" height="1318" width="2500" msid="80590400" hostid="261"></div><p>World-record runs are calculated based on an average of two consecutive runs. Going northbound with car owner Larry Caplin at the wheel, the Tuatara hit 279.7 mph, according to an emailed press release. Heading southbound, it hit 286.1 mph. </p><p>Averaged together, the Tuatara pulled off a 282.9-mph run - beating the previous record holder, the <a href="https://www.topgear.com/car-news/supercars/koenigsegg-agera-rs-has-claimed-five-speed-records">Koenigsegg Agera RS</a>, which averaged a top speed of 277.87 mph over two runs. But the Tuatara didn't get anywhere near the claimed 316-mph speed of its widely criticized first run.</p><p>The Tuatara also did not beat the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+'s 304.77-mph run from 2019, which it set at Volkswagen's Ehra Lessien proving ground. Though, as <a href="https://www.roadandtrack.com/news/a35325127/ssc-tuatara-hits-2829-mph-at-the-kennedy-space-center/">Road &amp; Track</a> notes, there's a small technicality: Bugatti only ran its car once and not again in the opposite direction.</p><p><keyword id="6355577" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="SSC">SSC</keyword> also made sure to have plenty of third-party validation on hand, which was something the company's first run lacked.</p><div type="image" title="2021 SSC Tuatara Reruns Record Jerod Shelby 2" height="1318" width="2500" msid="80590401" hostid="261"></div>In an emailed response to Insider, SSC Founder and CEO <keyword id="10211448" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="jerod-shelby">Jerod Shelby</keyword> stressed the company's commitment to transparency this time around.<p>"My public commitment this time was to utilize multiple GPS [and] measurement groups so that there were multiple levels of redundancy and to make sure that staff from those companies were in charge of installing, monitoring, reporting, and validating the equipment and the speeds and distances that they produced," he said. "We had staff on site installing and managing the GPS and measurement equipment from Racelogic, Life Racing, and IMRA (International Mile Racing Association). </p><p>"Since Racelogic is highly respected in the automotive industry, we basically used all the other measurement devices to see if they aligned with the multiple Racelogic VBox devices that were onboard the Tuatara. The end result was they all aligned. Racelogic verified all the data."</p><div type="image" title="2021 SSC Tuatara Reruns Record Car Front 3.4" height="1669" width="2500" msid="80590402" hostid="261"></div>An emailed Racelogic press release from January 25 confirmed the Tuatara's speed claims.<p>But SSC isn't finished yet. The car has yet to achieve the elusive 300-mph top speed since its original claims, and it isn't giving up.</p><p>"We are currently in the planning stages to return this spring to continue testing and attempt to achieve a validated 300-mph top speed at the same venue," Shelby said. "After an analysis of our Florida data, we don't think it will be possible to achieve an average of 316 mph in 2.3 the miles, but maybe we'll be pleasantly surprised."</p>

The track-ready Speedster is meant to be a "truly visceral driver's car," and packs a monstrous twin-turbocharged V12 engine rated at 700 horsepower and 555 pound-feet of torque.</p><p>It also won't be sold for street use in the US, Aston Martin told Business Insider, due to its lack of a windshield. US buyers can only take it on the racetrack, and Aston said a helmet or goggles are suggested for anyone riding in it. </p><p>Taking some of its design cues from fighter jets, the V12 Speedster sports two cockpit-like areas separated by a giant "spine" running down the middle of the car - convenient for the shy types, or those with some marital angst they definitely, positively did not start. Don't feel like talking to your passenger? In addition to hitting a maximum speed of 284.55 mph on its first run, which topped the previous best of 270.40 mph by the Hennessey Venom GT, it also <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-koenigsegg-agera-rs-just-smashed-bugattis-0-249mph-time-2017-10">recently posted</a> the fastest time from 0 to 249 mph, doing so in 36.44 seconds, 5.52 seconds than the previous record of 41.96 seconds, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/bugatti-chiron-set-new-speed-record-2017-9">set by</a> the Bugatti Chiron.</br></p><p>Koenigsegg's records may not be safe for long, as Hennessey is claiming that its new Venom F5 may be able <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/hennessey-venom-f5-2014-8">to approach</a> 300 mph. Watch a Swedish hypercar set the record for the world's fastest production car and reach a top speed of 284 mph

<ul class="summary-list"><li>On October 10, <keyword id="6355577" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="SSC">SSC</keyword> North America broke the fastest production car record with its 316-mph Tuatara.</li><li>The legitimacy of the record was called into question, however, after skeptics, including prominent YouTuber <keyword id="10191027" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="shmee">Shmee</keyword>, noticed some inconsistencies in SSC's video of the feat.</li><li>SSC ended up saying that it is "regretful that the videos shared were not an accurate representation of what happened."</li></ul><p>Just a week after announcing that its Tuatara <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/worlds-fastest-production-car-16-million-316-mph-ssc-tuatara-2020-10">had become the world's fastest production car</a>, boutique automaker SSC North America is defending its prize. Not from another car or automaker, mind. From the internet. </p><p>On October 19, news broke that the new <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/worlds-fastest-production-car-16-million-316-mph-ssc-tuatara-2020-10">SSC Tuatara</a> had averaged a speed of 316 mph on two runs and achieving a maximum speed of 331 mph after testing on October 10. That smashed the record that the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport had <a href="https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a28870777/bugatti-chiron-304-mph-world-record-speed/">previously put in place, at 304.77 mph</a>.</p><p>This is impressive for a number of reasons, chief among them being that SSC North America is a little-known, very small supercar manufacturer located in Washington state. Founded in 1998 by Jerod Shelby (no relation to Carroll Shelby), SSC had set the record for the <a href="https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1026407_ssc-ultimate-aero-tt-breaks-top-speed-world-record">world's fastest production car in 2007 with the Ultimate Aero Twin Turbo</a> at 255.83 mph. </p><p>That mark stood until 2010, when the title was <a href="https://www.topgear.com/car-news/bugatti-veyron-super-sport-news-veyron-ss-hits-267mph-2010">claimed by the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport</a> at 267 mph.</p><div type="image" title="SSC Tuatara_35" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78937713" hostid="261"></div>Compared to Bugatti, which has all the money and resources that multi-billion-dollar global automaker Volkswagen can give it, SSC is tiny. The fact that this small US company said that it managed to stick it to the far more famous brand, in terrific underdog style, made you sit up and pay attention. <p>And then the internet stepped in.</p><p>Soon after the initial flurry of news, questions of the record's legitimacy started rolling in. </p><p>Across <a href="https://jalopnik.com/that-331-mph-speed-record-set-by-the-ssc-tuatara-is-bei-1845507999">Facebook groups</a>, <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/cars/comments/jguw5p/side_by_side_comparison_of_the_ssc_tuatara_and/">Reddit threads</a>, and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSNRKBj_hUE&amp;feature=emb_titleitle">YouTube</a>, sleuths debated SSC's record, running numbers of their own and picking apart the available video footage. Among the most prominent of skeptics was <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIRgR4iANHI2taJdz8hjwLw">automotive YouTuber Shmee</a>, who posted a video titled, "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3daTG4_JS_4">Did the SSC Tuatara REALLY Set a 331mph World Record?</a>" to his 2.15 million channel subscribers. </p><iframe width="851" height="487" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/3daTG4_JS_4" frameborder="0"></iframe><p>In the video, Shmee grouped his evidence into three categories. </p><p>First, he examined the stretch of State Route 160 in Nevada where the Tuatara set its record. Using three center medians as visual bookmarks, he approximated the distance between them using Google Maps and determined how much time the Tuatara spent getting from one to the next using <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0dnQz126cE">SSC's video of the high-speed run</a>.</p><iframe width="1071" height="556" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/X0dnQz126cE" frameborder="0"></iframe><p>Shmee determined that the distance between the first and second median was about 1.13 miles. It took the Tuatara 22.64 seconds to travel between them, and because distance equals speed multiplied by time, that would put the car's average speed at 179.7 mph. However, judging from the digital speed overlay in SSC's video, the Tuatara appeared to cross the first median at 192 mph and the second at 307 mph.</p><p>The distance between the second and third median was 1.42 miles and the Tuatara took about 24.4 seconds to travel between them, with Shmee calculating the average speed between them to be 209.5 mph. Here, the digital overlay displayed a 307-mph entry speed and a 242-mph exit speed. </p><p>In both instances, the car's video overlay said it was traveling faster than what its average speed should have been, based on Shmee's math. Nowhere in the video did the Tuatara appear to slow down dramatically enough to result in the lower average speed.</p><div type="image" title="SSC Tuatara Shmee" height="1686" width="2880" msid="78937716" hostid="261"></div><p>And since Swedish automaker Koenigsegg <a href="https://www.automobilemag.com/news/ssc-tuatara-worlds-fastest-production-car-record/">used that same stretch of road in 2017 to set the production car record in its Agera RS</a>, Shmee lined up footage of both cars doing their runs and played the videos simultaneously and in real-time. He found that the Agera RS reached the third median before the Tuatara, despite the Tuatara's digital speed overlay displaying it running at a higher speed.</p><p>Shmee also drew attention to the Tuatara's actual speedometer — not the digital speed overlay or the laptop in the car also displaying the speed — as appearing blurred out. He said the last number you can see on the speedometer is 301 mph.</p><p>Finally, the pro racing driver who set the Tuatara's record time, Oliver Webb, said that the 331-mph speed was achieved <a href="https://www.thedrive.com/news/37161/the-ssc-tuataras-331-mph-run-almost-ended-in-disaster-thanks-to-a-little-gust-of-wind">while the car was in sixth gear</a>. Using gear ratios from a CIMA transmission, which is found in the Tuatara, and its tire size, Shmee calculated that the car, even sitting at its 8,800-RPM redline in sixth gear, could only do about 293 mph in sixth.</p><div type="image" title="SSC Tuatara Shmee" height="1678" width="2880" msid="78937717" hostid="261"></div><p>"There are so many open questions," Shmee told Business Insider. "The video presented has numerous flaws."</p><p>He said he believed that SSC was aware that he was looking into its record. He stands by his video and said that it doesn't detract from the incredible fact that a small team such as SSC can make a car that can steal Bugatti's — <em>Bugatti's! </em>— lunch. If that's what really happened, of course.</p><p>Put another way, he wanted to see the receipts. "If the Tuatara did what [SSC] said it did, it would take seconds to prove it," he said.</p><div type="image" title="SSC Tuatara_43" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78937718" hostid="261"></div><p>SSC said that it used technology from Dewetron, an Austrian GPS data-measurement company, to chart the Tuatara's speed. In an <a href="https://www.sscnorthamerica.com/news/dewetron-validates-ssc-tuatara-record-top-speed">October 26 press release</a>, it said that Dewetron validated the Tuatara's claimed top-speed run and that it had worked with Dewetron before. "Four out of five of the last world top-speed records were measured and validated on the same Dewetron system," the company said.</p><p>On Wednesday, however, <a href="https://cloud.dewetron.com/s/tJzr6HqrzcSZ2gG#pdfviewer">Dewetron said not so fast</a>.</p><p>"Despite the information published on the website of SSC North America well as on several related and non-related <keyword id="10879" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="YouTube">YouTube</keyword> channels, Dewetron did not validate any data from world record attempts or preceding tests. Not one of Dewetron's employees was present during the test drive or involved in the associated preparations," the statement read. </p><div type="image" title="SSC Tuatara_42" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78937720" hostid="261"></div><p>Dewetron acknowledged that SSC used its test and measurement system, but said that customer training only goes over "general use of the system, the software, as well as the initial configuration." </p><p>"The training does not include the creation of any setup related to any given test," it said.</p><p>Separately, Dewetron also said that, contrary to SSC's claims, it was not involved in "'four out of five' of the last top speed records," according to <a href="https://www.carthrottle.com/post/dewetron-says-it-neither-approved-nor-validated-the-ssc-tuataras-run/">CarThrottle</a>.</p><p>The speed claim became so debated and fought over that even the man driving the car wasn't sure of what had happened. In a <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CG5O1zXhv6h/">video on his personal Instagram page</a>, Webb said that he knows nothing more than "what he's finding out online." That variance in 'sync points' accounts for differing records of the run."</p><p>The company says that it's working with its video team to "release the actual footage in its simplest form," which it will share as soon as it has it.</p><p>Finally, SSC said that it received a letter from Dewetron on October 22 that confirmed the "accuracy of the equipment and speed sensor" it had supplied SSC.</p><p>You can read the statement below in full:</p><blockquote class="blockquote"><section class="blockquote-wrapper"><p>On October 10, 2020, SSC North America realized a dream that was a decade in the making, when our Tuatara hypercar achieved an average top speed of 316.11 MPH.&#xa0;</p><p>In the days since, there has been a swirl of interest and speculation about how and whether the Tuatara had achieved that speed.&#xa0;</p><p><strong>The good news:</strong> we did it, and the numbers are indeed on our side.&#xa0;</p><p><strong>The bad news:</strong> only after the fact did we realize that the depiction of the speed run, in video form, had been substantially incorrect.</p><p>The following is a long explanation of what and how this happened, to the extent we now know. I hope it will serve to build trust in the SSC team, and in the exceptional feat the Tuatara has earned.&#xa0;</p><p><strong>The video</strong></p><p>Three years ago, SSC began working with Driven Studios, a video team to document what seemed like every waking moment of the Tuatara hypercar and those who've created it.</p><p>They've since interviewed virtually every team member and consultant, captured the car in build and throughout extensive testing, and have played a key role in not only capturing, but in producing the record run on October 10 in Pahrump, Nevada. They have become a trusted partner of the SSC family.</p><p>On the big day, October 10, there were video cameras everywhere — in the cockpit, on the ground, and even secured on a helicopter a low-flying T33 to capture the car at speed.&#xa0;</p><p>The morning of the run, the record was achieved, we were over the moon. We kept the news under embargo until October 19, with hopes of releasing a video to accompany the press release.</p><p>On October 19, the day the news broke, we thought there were two videos that had been released -- one from the cockpit, with data of the speed run overlaid, and another video of b-roll running footage. The cockpit video was shared with Top Gear, as well as on the SSC and Driven+ YouTube pages.</p><p>Somehow, there was a mixup on the editing side, and I regret to admit that the SSC team hadn't double checked the accuracy of the video before it was released. We also hadn't realized that not one, but two different cockpit videos existed, and were shared with the world.&#xa0;</p><p>Hypercar fans have quickly cried foul, and we hadn't immediately responded, because we had not realized the inconsistencies -- that there were two videos, each with inaccurate information -- that had been shared. This was not our intention. Like me, the head of the production team had not initially realized these issues, and has brought on technical partners to identify the cause of the inconsistency.&#xa0;</p><p>At first glance, it appears that the videos released have differences in where the editors had overlaid the data logger (which displays speed), in relation to the car's location on the run. That variance in 'sync points' accounts for differing records of the run.</p><p>While we had never intended for the video captured to play the role of legitimizing the run, we are regretful that the videos shared were not an accurate representation of what happened on October 10.</p><p>Driven Studios does have extensive footage of everything that transpired and is working with SSC to release the actual footage in its simplest form. We'll share that as soon as it's available.</p><p dir="ltr"><strong>How the Speed Was Measured</strong></p><p dir="ltr">The SSC team received a piece of Dewetron equipment for its use in the speed run. The SSC team was trained remotely (due to COVID) on the use of that equipment.&#xa0;</p><p dir="ltr">The Dewetron equipment includes sensors placed in the vehicle, that tracked an average of 15 satellites over the course of the Tuatara top speed run.&#xa0;</p><p dir="ltr">Two independent witnesses, not affiliated with SSC nor Dewetron, were on site to view the speeds measured by the Dewetron equipment. SSC intends to submit proof of what those witnesses had seen on the Dewetron equipment to Guinness for verification.&#xa0;</p><p dir="ltr">On October 22, Dewetron sent a letter to SSC confirming the accuracy of the equipment and speed sensor they had provided to SSC, and that letter will also be submitted to Guinness as part of application for the world top speed record.&#xa0;</p><p dir="ltr">As an additional step, SSC is in the process of submitting the Dewetron equipment and speed sensor for further analysis and verification of that equipment's accuracy.</p></section></blockquote><p>In response to Shmee's gear ratio calculations and Business Insider's follow-up email, SSC provided the Tuatara's technical specs:</p><blockquote class="blockquote"><section class="blockquote-wrapper"><p>Ratios/speed, using the 2.92 final-drive ratio</p><p>Gear ratios/top speed (gears one through six have 8,800 RPM rev-limit)</p><p>First gear: 3.133 / 80.56 mph</p><p>Second gear: 2.100 / 120.18 mph</p><p>Third gear: 1.520 / 166.04 mph</p><p>Fourth gear: 1.172 / 215.34 mph</p><p>Fifth gear: .941 / 268.21 mph</p><p>Sixth gear: .757 / 333.4 mph at 8,800 RPM&#xa0;</p><p>Seventh gear: .625 / 353.33 MPH (Estimated maximum at 7,700 RPM in seventh gear. Designed as mainly an overdrive highway cruising gear.)</p><p>Tires:</p><p>Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2</p><p>88.5-inch circumference</p><p>28.185-inch diameter</p></section></blockquote><p>The numbers are slightly different than the ones Shmee had, particularly the final-drive ratio (or differential ratio, as he called it) and the sixth-gear ratio. Per SSC's math, the Tuatara does indeed appear geared to be able to hit 331 mph while in sixth gear.</p><div type="image" title="SSC Tuatara_31" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78937724" hostid="261"></div><p>So now, we're left now waiting to see SSC's new footage of the run.</p><p>You can write this off as just a dumb spat between some internet sleuths and a boutique car company you've never heard of. But production car speed records don't happen every day, especially in spectacular David-and-Goliath fashion such as this. To the people who care about this stuff — enthusiasts, automakers, buyers who insist on having whatever's fastest — it matters.</p><p>This also means that any company that plans to use superlatives such as a world record to help sell its cars must know that the internet will invariably come for it. In 2017, when Lamborghini said it set a new Nürburgring lap time in the Huracán Performante, <a href="https://jalopnik.com/did-lamborghini-fake-its-record-breaking-nurburgring-la-1792933570">it had to fight off heavy skepticism</a>.</p><p>There will always be internet detectives, and if you release a video of your record run, you can almost guarantee that it will get picked apart. SSC stands by its numbers and its record, but also admitted to inconsistencies in its published video. It is working on getting another version out. </p><p>Once that happens, it will hopefully put the issue to rest. At least until the next fastest car comes along.</p>

Musk said during the automaker's third-quarter earnings call in October that he expected the global demand for the Model 3 to reach 500,000 to one million vehicles per year in the long term. Tesla had delivered 82,687 Model 3s this year through September.</p><p>Tesla plans to build factories in China and Europe to increase its production capacity and ease delivery logistics for foreign customers as it plans to introduce a crossover SUV, semi truck, pickup truck, and a new version of its Roadster sports car in the coming years. <span>The automaker has said it <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-start-making-cars-china-factory-2019-2018-10">plans to begin</a> parts of Model 3 production at its upcoming Shanghai factory in 2019. </span></p><p><span>W</span><span>hile Tesla has not announced the site of its European factory, Musk <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-may-build-gigafactory-in-germany-elon-musk-says-2018-6">said in June</a> that Germany is one of the automaker's preferred locations.</span></p><p><span><em>Have a Tesla news tip? Tesla customers in China can now order the Model 3

They're the best of the best and were selected after a year of test-driving and reviewing dozens of cars, trucks, SUVs, crossovers, and sports cars.</p><p>We reviewed and tested more vehicles than ever in 2017, thanks to transportation reporter Danielle Muoio and deputy editor Cadie Thompson joining our ranks. News editor Bryan Logan also lent a hand on the West Coast. We also took more photos, thanks to visual-features reporter Hollis Johnson, and we shot numerous videos and Facebook Lives with the assistance of associate producer Alexandra Appolonia as well as producers Justin Gmoser and Emma Fierberg. Our two main reviewers, Matt DeBord and Ben Zhang, also traveled far and wide to sample fantastic cars in their natural environment: the racetrack. In addition, all models must have been road tested by at least two members of the Business Insider team to qualify. Another driver in an oncoming red Ferrari 488 flashed their lights in greeting.</p><p>Wherever you go in the new Corvette, that'll be the standard reaction - for a while, at least, until everyone calms down about the car a bit.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Chevrolet Corvette_KL_46" height="3750" width="2500" msid="78701477" hostid="261"></div>That's because the new Corvette <em>is</em> exciting, and it's a seismic shift from any other Corvette in history. <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/07/18/americas-sports-car-the-corvette-almost-didnt-survive-the-great-recession.html">America's Sports Car</a> has finally landed in the form of the mid-engine supercar - an idea that's been in the works since the late 1950s, but never actually came to be. <p>That is, until now. </p><p>The mid-engine Corvette is no longer <a href="https://jalopnik.com/how-the-mid-engine-chevrolet-corvette-became-the-automo-1834958901">a myth, no longer a tall tale</a>. This is the real thing, designed to go toe-to-toe against the other midship sports cars and supercars that command much, much higher price tags.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Chevrolet Corvette_KL_37" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78701481" hostid="261"></div>Unlike some of the mid-engine options from Italy or Britain, however, the mid-engine Corvette isn't merely a noisy, one-trick track pony. It calms down into everyday civility, broadening the number of places you can actually use it. <h2><strong>The 2020 Corvette: Folklore no more </strong></h2><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/corvette-history-chevy-chevrolet-1953-debut-mid-engine-supercar-2020-5#on-january-17-1953-the-chevrolet-c1-corvette-was-displayed-as-a-dream-car-at-the-general-motors-motorama-exposition-at-the-waldorf-astoria-hotel-in-new-york-city-1">Since 1953</a>, the Corvette has been <keyword id="55200" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Chevrolet">Chevrolet</keyword>'s two-door, two-seater sports car. For the first seven generations, it used a traditional front-engine setup, where the engine was located in front of the driver.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Chevrolet Corvette_KL_47" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78701486" hostid="261"></div>For the current and eighth generation, also known as the "<keyword id="8954824" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="C8">C8</keyword>," the Corvette finally went mid-engine, tucking its power source behind the driver and between the front and rear axles. Rumors of the Corvette going mid-engine have been swirling for decades. With the C8, they finally became true. <p>Mid-engine setups are generally seen as the more naturally performance-oriented ones. Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, and McLaren choose not to use the tired, old front-engine setup seen in both your Ford Fusion and the Corvettes of years past. Mid-engine cars are praised for their balance and handling, since most of their weight isn't located at one extreme end. </p><div type="image" title="2020 Chevrolet Corvette_KL_26" height="3750" width="2500" msid="78701491" hostid="261"></div>For lifelong Corvette fans and enthusiasts, the move to midship is a controversial one - added to the fact that the <keyword id="7572445" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="c8-corvette">C8 Corvette</keyword> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/corvette-history-chevy-chevrolet-1953-debut-mid-engine-supercar-2020-5#unfortunately-none-of-the-c8-corvettes-will-be-offered-with-a-manual-transmission-78">will not offer a manual transmission</a>. Primarily, the reason for dropping the stick had to do with demand. <p>When the C7 Corvette launched as a 2014 model, about half of its customers optioned it with a manual transmission. By the end of the C7's production run, however, the number had shrunk to only 20%. That, according to <a href="https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a28531606/2020-chevy-corvette-manual-transmission/">Car and Driver</a>, was enough to convince General Motors' money team to axe the manual option on the C8 altogether.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Chevrolet Corvette_KL_7" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78701497" hostid="261"></div>You've only got yourselves to blame for this. <h2><strong>Details and safety ratings: An all-American V8 </strong></h2><p>Cheer up, though. The C8 has plenty of other good stuff, like its naturally aspirated V8. Most automakers don't offer that anymore! </p><p>Packed between the base C8's axles is Chevrolet's LT2 engine: a 6.2-liter V8 that produces <a href="https://media.chevrolet.com/media/us/en/chevrolet/vehicles/CorvetteGS/2020.tab1.html">a claimed</a> 495 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. All of that is sent to the rear wheels via an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The automaker quotes a sub-three-second time to get from 0 to 60 mph when the base car has the $5,000 Z51 Performance Package.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray 214" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78701502" hostid="261"></div>Overall, the C8 measures 15.2 feet long, 6.3 feet wide, and four feet tall. Its dry weight - meaning its weight without onboard consumables such as cargo or people - comes to 3,366 pounds. <p>Because the engine is now no longer in the nose, the C8 has two trunks: one in the front and one in the back. The front trunk will fit a pretty average-sized carry-on suitcase, while the rear trunk is much longer and will fit a set of golf clubs, according to Chevrolet. Why this is a unit of measurement is beyond me. </p><div type="image" title="2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray 061" height="1227" width="2500" msid="78701504" hostid="261"></div>Anyway, Chevrolet quotes the C8 to have 12.6 total cubic feet of cargo volume. This is slightly less than the Porsche 718 Cayman, which is also mid-engined and has a combined cargo volume of 14.9 cubic feet from its two trunks, according to <a href="https://cars.usnews.com/cars-trucks/porsche/cayman/interior">US News</a>.<p>The Environmental Protection Agency estimates the C8 to return 15 mpg in the city, 27 mpg on the highway, and 19 mpg combined. Corvettes, like many sports cars, generally aren't rated for their crashworthiness. </p><h2><strong>What stands out: The steering, suspension, and transmission are your friends </strong></h2><div type="image" title="2020 Chevrolet Corvette_KL_33" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78701505" hostid="261"></div>The new Corvette's steering is wonderful. You only need about five seconds with the car to realize this. Tight, beautifully weighted, and acute, the C8's steering fills you with confidence. It builds trust, relaying gobs information up through your fingers and obeying even the smallest inputs. <p>This particular loaner came with the $5,000 Z51 Performance Package, which adds performance brakes, suspension, and exhaust, as well as a special rear spoiler. There was also the $1,895 Magnetic Ride Control option: GM's highly adaptive suspension system that uses magnetically controlled shock absorbers.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Chevrolet Corvette_KL_30" height="3750" width="2500" msid="78701507" hostid="261"></div>Combined, these options give the C8 a solid and stiff-feeling ride, certainly less bouncy than the Z51-less C8 <a href="https://jalopnik.com/the-2020-chevrolet-corvette-doesnt-drive-like-other-mid-1841799213">I tried out in 2020</a>. It's not a ride that will shake your spine to pieces like it has something to prove, but rather one that clearly articulates the road surface and how the car is responding to it. There's no body roll - or lean - to speak of.<p>The road feedback doesn't mean the C8 is murderous on your bones over long distances, though. It cruises comfortably, its <a href="https://www.topspeed.com/cars/car-news/the-2020-chevy-c8-corvette-mixes-two-technologies-no-other-car-in-the-segment-has-ar186066.html#:~:text=Cylinder%20deactivation%20improves%20fuel%20economy&amp;text=When%20all%20cylinders%20are%20active,%2D7%2D6%2D4.2D4.">cylinder deactivation system</a> keeping four of the eight cylinders inactive in order to save fuel. </p><div type="image" title="2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray 060" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78701510" hostid="261"></div>When that happens, the Corvette putters along quietly, its dual-clutch transmission keeping the engine's revs low in eighth gear. That dual-clutch, despite being a sore spot for many purists, is in fact quite good. <p>It's relentlessly fast on upshifts and snappy on the way back down. DCTs, as I've experienced them elsewhere, typically don't handle stop-and-go traffic very well. They shudder all the way down, jerking to match the right gear with the steadily decreasing speed of the car. </p><div type="image" title="2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Engine 100" height="2000" width="2500" msid="78701512" hostid="261"></div>The C8's DCT is comparatively slick, shudder-free in traffic, and smooth as glass. So smooth, in fact, that you can barely feel it working in the car's comfort mode. Under harder driving I sort of wish the transmission made its presence a bit more known, but during around-town cruising, it was ideal.<p>The removable roof is nice, too. It unclips easily and you can store it in the trunk, though you sacrifice rear trunk space if you do.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray 059" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78701513" hostid="261"></div><h2><strong>What falls short: An all-consuming interior </strong></h2><p>When Chevrolet set out to build the new C8, it really seems like the intent was to remake the whole thing. The engine got moved. The base version is slightly more powerful. There's no more manual transmission. <a href="https://jalopnik.com/in-desperate-attempt-to-alienate-buyers-above-retiremen-1836909441">No more chrome wheels</a>.</p><p>And the interior went from this, which was just fine and serviceable:</p><div type="image" title="2018 Chevrolet CorvetteConv 045" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78701663" hostid="261"></div><p>To this:</p><div type="image" title="2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray 223" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78701670" hostid="261"></div><p>As you can see, the big change was moving all the climate buttons to the giant, driver-oriented ridge thingy that sweeps down the center console like a spine and cleaves the cabin in two. </p><p>Here's a closer look at it.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray 219" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78701673" hostid="261"></div><p>In the Corvette, the interior was one place that needed no revamping. It was just fine in the previous-generation C7.</p><p>The very best thing I can say about the new one is it looks like Star Trek cosplay. The worst I can say is that it's claustrophobic. From the driver's seat, I felt consumed, swallowed up by the tallness of the center console, the high window line and the narrow, steeply raked windshield. </p><p>Outward visibility is not great, which did not help to alleviate the overwhelming sense of <em>mass</em> that came from sitting in the new Corvette. The car is and feels big to drive. Intellectually, I knew I could fit it on the tight, twisting roads of Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Emotionally, I'd still cringe a bit when there was an oncoming car. </p><div type="image" title="2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray 218" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78701676" hostid="261"></div>As a passenger, you feel quite isolated from the driver - cut off completely - and your own climate control buttons aren't even facing you. It's a good interior for two people who are having a fight, I guess.<p>The C8 also could have used more nighttime testing, if the final product is anything to go by. When driving at night, light from the center infotainment screen reflects off of the partition behind the cabin, which then reflects directly into the rearview mirror. This was also slightly annoying to deal with.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray 216" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78701680" hostid="261"></div><h2><strong>How the C8 Corvette compares to its competitors: The most car for the least amount of money</strong></h2><p>With a starting price of under $60,000, it's tough to find a better bargain out there than the C8 Corvette. You get a 500-horsepower, mid-engined supercar for <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-bmw-m3-m4-first-look-price-info-pics-stats-2020-9">less than the price of the new BMW M3</a>, and none of the pretentiousness of a Porsche or Ferrari. This is America's Sports Car, after all. The car with home-team advantage. If you don't like it, you're a dirty Commie. </p><p>Besides the Corvette, other mid-engine cars for sale today include the Acura NSX, Alfa Romeo 4C Spider, Audi R8, Bugatti Chiron, Ferrari 488, Ferrari F8, Ford GT, Lamborghini Aventador, Lamborghini Huracán, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2020-lotus-evora-gt-review-price-specs-horsepower-sports-car-2020-9">Lotus Evora GT</a>, all McLaren models, and Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman, according to this <a href="https://www.caranddriver.com/features/g27343417/mid-engined-cars/">helpful Car and Driver list</a>.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Chevrolet Corvette_KL_45" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78701687" hostid="261"></div><p>Unfortunately, all of these cars also either start at well over $100,000, are down on power, are less daily usable, or some combination of all three.</p><p>Among its competitors, the C8 shines. It offers the most mid-engine car for the dollar.</p><p>Good luck finding a sub-$60,000 C8 Corvette anytime soon, though. <a href="https://jalopnik.com/the-59-995-c8-corvettes-are-virtually-non-existent-at-1842394471">As of March</a>, base-model cars were "virtually non-existent." My loaner certainly wasn't cheap, either. </p><div type="image" title="2020 Chevrolet Corvette_KL_11" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78701691" hostid="261"></div><p>Sure, the base price was $58,900, but it also had the: 2LT equipment package ($7,300) that included a premium sound system, head-up display, heated and ventilated seats, a heated steering wheel, wireless charging, and navigation; Magnetic Ride Control ($1,895); Z51 pack ($5,000); GT2 bucket seats ($1,495); a <a href="https://jalopnik.com/see-the-2020-c8-corvettes-nose-lift-in-action-1836907887">front-nose lift system</a> ($1,495); staggered 19-inch front wheels and 20-inch rear wheels ($995); and Rapid Blue paint ($500). </p><p>In all, the car had $20,320 in options, bringing the total MSRP to $80,315. Still <a href="https://www.porsche.com/usa/models/911/">less than a 911</a>, however!</p><p>Here's the window sticker, if you're curious.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Chevrolet Corvette window sticker." height="1403" width="2171" msid="78701695" hostid="261"></div><h2><strong>Our impressions: The true everyday supercar</strong></h2><p>Head-on, the C8 is a visual punch to the face. Low, pointy, and wide, it captures the wild essence of great supercar design. Everyone will wave at you. Everyone will be stoked to see it. Smiles all around, and you'll feel just a little bit famous.</p><p>In profile and from the rear, the design flattens out and becomes rather disjointed - a gripe overshadowed by the stunning front end.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Chevrolet Corvette_KL_13" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78701698" hostid="261"></div><p>But as striking as its face is, the C8 is docile. Driving it, you'll forget the car is mid-engined at all. It handles beautifully as a cruiser, agreeable and quiet, kind on your body over bumps but also not erasing the sensation of road imperfections altogether. It strikes a nice balance.</p><p>That tame mood also extends to when you want to push the car a little bit. Oh, there's power, no doubt about that, and it'll do the fast stuff just fine - but the C8 doesn't feel innately hyped-up and ready to go like other sports cars do.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Chevrolet Corvette_KL_40" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78701705" hostid="261"></div><p>Somehow, what a naturally aspirated V8 packed in behind you is supposed to offer just doesn't translate to a kick in the back of the head (the good kind) when you really put your foot down. Rather, it feels a little sluggish at low revs. </p><p>As a base model, though, it's clear that Chevrolet left room for what's coming next. It's the only explanation for all the tameness. The upcoming performance versions will build on what the C8 already offers, and will likely surpass what they were in the C7 generation when they put down <a href="https://www.caranddriver.com/chevrolet/corvette-z06-2019">650 horsepower</a> and <a href="https://www.motortrend.com/cars/chevrolet/corvette/2019/2019-chevrolet-corvette-zr1-first-test-review/">755 horsepower</a>.</p><p>I'm speculating, but I wouldn't be surprised if in two or three years we find ourselves with a 1,000-horsepower, hybrid, mid-engined Corvette for the C8 generation.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Chevrolet Corvette_KL_17" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78701708" hostid="261"></div><p>But for now, we have the base C8. Even calling it a base model feels disingenuous because the car is so capable. REVIEW: The $80,000 mid-engine Corvette is the best bargain supercar, yet it's unexpectedly tame to drive

The genre is well understood: a car for the well-heeled and fashionable to use for marvelous jaunts between urban residence and beach or mountain getaways. Seating for two in the front, and for two in the back. But not really very much seating in the back. Maybe the idea that nobody should ever sit back there; instead, space for a cashmere wrap and a suede jacket, possibly an expensive camera. A trunk large enough to hold a pair of overnight bags.</p><p>Under the hood, a big, powerful, probably excessive engine. A V8 - or more! A great well of horsepower, with the ferocity directed at the rear drive wheels and the luxuriously loud exhaust note coming from the tailpipes. </p><p>These GT cars say something about an automaker. Brits and Italians love to create them. </p><p>And then we have Lexus. Toyota's luxury brand is supposed to be about comfy sedans and admirable crossover SUVs, not sexy, European-ish 2+2s. But Lexus has a GT in the lineup. In fact, it has two versions of the same GT: the LC 500 and the LC 500h.</p><p>We were <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/lexus-lc500h-review-pictures-2017-5">recently wowed by the LC 500h</a>, a hybrid gas-electric car, and then a unique opportunity presented itself: the LC 500h's sibling, the LC 500 all-gas vehicle, rocking a stonking V8 rather than the 500h's combination of a V6-electric-motor powertrain. What made this opportunity even more appealing was that we could drive the LC 500 to Lime Rock Park, a racetrack in Connecticut where Lexus Racing would be running cars in the IMSA WeatherTech series, North America's premier showcase for sports cars. (And running not the LC 500, but rather the RC F GT3, a track-modded version of the RC F coupe.)</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5989c0a476084a507a8b5caf-2000/lexus-motorsports-lime-rock-lm53603-1wm-2000x1333-r1.jpg" alt="Lexus Motorsports Lime Rock" data-mce-source="Lexus Racing" /><p class="source"><span>Lexus Racing</span></p><p class="caption">Lexus takes to the track at Lime Rock.</p></div><p></p></div></div>I've driven sports cars to watch sport cars race before, but we're talking about Ferraris. Lexus' ambitions on the track mirror what the LC 500 is all about: proper high performance, from a brand with a reputation for producing softly sprung sedans of outstanding quality and SUVs that see heavy action in America's more affluent zip codes, hauling families.</p><p>Our test car was a well-optioned, pre-production version of the $92,000 base LC 500 (the LC 500h comes in at about $5,000 more). Inside and out, it was stylish and luxurious. The LC 500h was a real traffic stopper in shimmery metallic blue, and the icy white LC 500 continued that trend. It was one of the most looked-at cars we have sampled in recent months, exceeded only by something like the Acura NSX supercar.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5989d16076084a507a8b5d91-2113/img1642.jpg" alt="Lexus LC 500" data-mce-source="Matthew DeBord/BI" /><p class="source"><span>Matthew DeBord/BI</span></p><p class="caption">Sharp!</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The LC 500 (and the 500h) just seemed to get all the proportions right. Even Lexus' controversial "spindle" grille appears fetching as the prime feature of the car's fascia. The current design vocabulary Lexus is using is heavy on folded shapes and articulated edges, and on some vehicles (I'm looking at you, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/lexus-rx350-2016-5">RX SUV</a>) the approach can seem excessive. But on the LC 500, barely restrained excess is the whole point, and here all the swoops and slashes and drama come together effectively.</p><p>The interior is arguably even better, a sleek realm of tautly bolstering leather seats and all manner of Alcantara swathing. And they aren't likely to have anybody in the back seat, so there's some additional space.</p><p>The infotainment system is best passed over in silence. A modest display screen occupies the upper center of the console, but it's the wonky knob-and-touchscreen interface that is difficult to use. The problem isn't unique to the LC 500 - we've struggled with this system in many Lexus vehicles. It is functional once you get the hang of it, but it's also continually annoying. Lexus can and should do better. But otherwise, all the modern features are present: Bluetooth integration, USB/AUX ports, navigation, premium audio with SiriusXM satellite radio.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5989c8f876084a2b198b4dd6-2400/img1645.jpg" alt="Lexus LC 500" data-mce-source="Matthew DeBord/BI" /><p class="source"><span>Matthew DeBord/BI</span></p><p class="caption">The powerplant.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The heart of the LC 500 is, of course, a 5.0-liter, 471-horsepower V8, delivering 398 pound-feet of torque and a Lexus-claimed 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds. That's juicy fast and impressive given the LC 500's bulk, which is about one NFL defensive lineman above 4,000 lbs.</p><p>On my roughly 230-mile round trip from the Garden State to Connecticut and back, I didn't have a lot of opportunities to duck and dive into corners (there was some of that), but I certainly had a chance to pilot the LC 500 and that excellent V8 in a straight line. One of the best things about a big V8 is that you get this "bottomless well of power" effect: you're roaring along, but you can always roar more. This is very relaxing, knowing that you can just tap the throttle and summon more puissance, literally on demand. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5989c8fa76084a2b198b4dd7-2400/img1657.jpg" alt="Lexus LC 500" data-mce-source="Matthew DeBord/BI" /><p class="source"><span>Matthew DeBord/BI</span></p><p class="caption">Meh.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>This is precisely what you want from a GT car: the Grand Tour entails parkways, highways, freeways, motorways - all the many ways that cars can drive on - blended with some scenic twists and turns. On this front, the LC 500 is magnificent. It's different from the LC 500h, which is natural given that the driving dynamics of a hybrid vary. In the case of the LC 500, they vary a lot, but not so much with the handling and the vehicle's composure, more so with the powertrain. </p><p>You've got a rear-wheel-drive car in both cases, but the LC 500 has a large gas-only engine with a 10-speed transmission that can deliver decent fuel economy. It also has an Eco mode to go along with a Comfort mode, as well as Sport and Sport Plus modes that when combined with the paddle-shifters allow the driver to take control. The LC 500h has the same modes, but the engine yokes together two technologies. The transmission is also a two-part invention, combining a familiar hybrid continuously variable unit with a geared setup to mimic the pop of an old-school mill.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5989c8fa4fc3c04f498b5f04-2400/img1652.jpg" alt="Lexus LC 500" data-mce-source="Matthew DeBord/BI" /><p class="source"><span>Matthew DeBord/BI</span></p><p class="caption">Controls driving modes.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>We <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/lexus-rc-f-review-2017-7">had some issues with the RC F</a>, but really no major performance objections to the LC 500 or LC 500h. True, the LC 500 isn't Lexus' legendary LFA supercar, but it checks off numerous boxes, from snazzy styling to robust engine note.</p><p>Lexus has set about changing minds and capturing heats with its enthusiast offerings, and somewhat shockingly, it's succeeding. Lexus Racing is the point of the spear, but memories of the LFA linger strongly, and while some of the company's F-Sport products haven't been quite as good as we might have hoped, the LC 500 is a generally brilliant piece of engineering. </p><p>The market for such machines is small but significant, as far as branding, influence, and direction are concerned. The LC 500 is a "talker" - a car whose reputation will increasingly precede it.
