It was the first drop in seven months. Compared to a year ago, CPI rose 0.2%, also in line. "Core" CPI, which excludes volatile food and gas prices, fell 0.1% month-on-month, and rose 0.2% year-on-year. The Bureau of Labor Statistics said that, once again, low gas prices contributed to the drop in inflation. Like the Federal Reserve, Capital Economics' Steve Murphy said the downward pressure on prices from low energy prices and the strong dollar is likely to fade soon.</span></li><li><span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nahb-housing-market-index-september-2015-9">Homebuilder sentiment</a> is at a 10-year high. <span>The index from the National Association of Homebuilders was 62. <span>"We were nervous that the drop in stock prices would dampen a</span><span>ctivity for a while, but homebuilders have instead reported </span><span>rising current sales and buyer traffic, though the latter is </span><span>hared to square with the modest dip in future sales e</span><span>xpectations," wrote Pantheon Macroeconomics' Ian Shepherdson in a client note.</span></span></span></li><li><span><span><span><span>Crude oil spiked. <span>West Texas Intermediate crude oil futures rose more than 5% in New York to as high as $47.34 per barrel. Analysts had forecast a build by 1.2 million barrels. SABMiller's stock spiked as much as 20% in over-the-counter trading, while </span><span>Anheuser Busch Inbev rose 7%. Chloe is anything but. She is a mini frenchie - merely one of the many rising stars in the world of social pet influencers.</p><p>And increasingly, these four-legged furballs are becoming the latest faces of beauty brands, touting their products and headlining some of their biggest digital campaigns.</p><p><a href="https://www.macys.com/shop/makeup-and-perfume/urban-decay?id=55573&amp;cm_mmc=Google_Beauty_Brand-_-Brand+-+Urban+Decay_Urban+Decay+-+Misc+-+EXACT-_-140886038833-_-urban%20decay_e_c_kclickid_18e8ffe7-f460-4759-8df8-22bf6d32cfe6&amp;trackingid=452x358968&amp;gclid=EAIaIQobChMIiNqep6WW1QIVm4uzCh0bdAm7EAAYAiAAEgIIJvD_BwE">Urban Decay,</a> The Body Shop, Too Faced, Nyx, Smashbox and <a href="https://www.lushusa.com/">Lush Cosmetics</a> are among the beauty brands that have recently chosen to hire dogs and other pets as their brand ambassadors, specifically on Instagram. There has been an uptick in the number of beauty and fashion brands inquiring to partner with pets in recent months, confirmed Loni Edwards, managing partner at <a href="http://www.thedogagency.com/">The Dog Agency</a>, an influencer agency that specializes in matching brands with pet influencers.</p><p>Wait, there are pet influencers? Yes, due to the rise of the visual web and platforms like Facebook and Instagram,<span> marketers have had a growing interest in hiring social media personalities to hawk their products in recent years. </span></p><p><span>While these influencers were initially humans, over the past few years people have also taken to following famous dogs, cats and other animals on Instagram and other social networks. So</span>me, like the collective account <a href="https://www.instagram.com/dogsofinstagram/?hl=en">DogsofInstagram</a>, boasts over 4 million followers. And <a href="https://digiday.com/marketing/everything-pawsome-rise-pet-influencers-online/">brands, including Mercedes Benz and Budweiser, have enlisted such pet influencers for ad campaigns.</a></p><p>Marketers either feature photos with these pets on their feeds, or get shout outs from the pets on their personal accounts. And they aren't just aligning with these pet stars to rack up the likes. </p><p>The brands are also deliberately partnering with these pooches to let their commitment against animal cruelty be known far and wide. Both Urban Decay and The Body Shop have specifically been running Instagram posts against animal cruelty recently. </p><p>The Body Shop, for example, recently launched "<a href="https://foreveragainstanimaltesting.com/page/9988/petition/1?gclid=CJSJrualltUCFR2BswodppsNPg&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds&amp;dclid=CPmJt-alltUCFU0INwodAyYN7g">Forever Against Animal Testing</a>," its multi-year ad campaign that aims to raise awareness on the cruelty of animal testing in cosmetics and gather 8 million global signatures by 2020 to petition the U.N. to ban animal testing in cosmetics globally.</p><p>Instead of relying solely on beauty bloggers and influencers as it has traditionally, the brand chose to also partner with five pet influencers including <a href="http://www.tunameltsmyheart.com/">Tuna Melts My Heart</a>, Toast Meets World, Mr. Bagel the Chinchilla, Bunny Mama, and Dogs of Instagram. Additionally, human fashion and beauty influencers <a href="https://www.instagram.com/kristenxleanne/?hl=en"><span>Kristen Leanne</span></a> and <span><a href="https://www.instagram.com/keikolynn/?hl=en">KeikoLynn</a> were also part of the campaign.</span></p><p>"We're not traditional, we're quirky and different and are always trying to find ways to advertise that aren't mainstream," Andrea Blieden, vp of marketing for The Body Shop, told Business Insider. "But this was more than that, it was about remaining true to our activist roots. This is a campaign against animal cruelty, so who better to speak for the animals than the animals themselves?"</p><p>But there's no denying that these pets help the brands broaden their audience, as well as their reach and scope. With so many pets netting thousands and millions of followers these days, brands can easily achieve scale, often at a price much lower than human influencers. (Regular influencers make anywhere between $1,000 to $2000,000 on Instagram to $200,000, while a pet influencers can make between $2,000 to $5,000 per post.) Plus, posts with pets in them tend to outperform regular posts, with higher levels of engagement, said Edwards.</p><p>"There's been a greater push from brands because pet influencers in general provide a lot of value," she said. "The content outperforms because it tends to get higher engagement, has more viral potential and people are more likely to tag their friends."</p><p>"Pet influencers enjoy strong engagement rates as their content may be more shareable, more likely to elicit a response, and overall feel less promotional -- even when they are touting a product," added <span>Kamiu Lee, head of business and development strategy at influencer network Bloglovin'.</span></p><p>But above all, the demand for pet influencers among specific categories like beauty brands is reflective of a bigger trend for Lee. According to her, <span>as more </span><span>consumers become pet owners </span><span>and begin to consider </span><span>pets to <a href="http://www.theharrispoll.com/health-and-life/Pets-are-Members-of-the-Family.html">be a part of their family</a></span><span>, verticals beyond pet food, such as home, CPG and beauty brands are starting to leverage pet influencers.</span></p><p><span>"</span>Household cleaning brands can work with pet influencers to highlight the effectiveness of their product against everyone's furry family member and beauty brands can highlight their commitment to animal friendly products by working with pet influencers," she said. Live Coverage Of The Super Bowl Ads HERE

<p>Pornhub is <a href="http://www.inquisitr.com/500737/pornhub-submits-sfw-super-bowl-ad-is-rejected-anyway-video/">making headlines</a> for announcing that it's incredibly mild "Super Bowl ad," featuring an elderly couple looking lovingly into each others' eyes on an idyllic park bench, was rejected by CBS.</p>
<p>While many believe the hype that big, bad CBS blocked  poor, well intentioned Pornhub's G-rated spot, the fact is that this is more likely a cheap stunt to get free publicity: There's no way this ad could have played in the Super Bowl. It's not even the right length.</p>
<p>Super Bowl spots are sold in 30-second increments. This year, those half-minute spots went for a hefty average of $3.8 million — although one advertiser spent more than $4 million. Pornhub's ad is 20-seconds long ... which simply makes no sense.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.buzzfeed.com/copyranter/pornhub-super-bowl-commercial-rejected">Pornhub's press release states</a> that "a CBS spokesperson offered this brief response via email to the website's proposal: "CBS Television Network Standards do not permit <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword> related to pornography. Therefore, we cannot accept your submission."</p>
<p>This is well known to everyone in the ad industry, and thus Pornhub could not have expected CBS to say yes. It's highly unlikely that the company had any intention of shelling out the millions to play this spot.</p>
<p>Promoting an ad as a "banned" spot is an increasingly popular marketing technique.</p>
<p>In fact, <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/20/whitney-thompson-super-bowl-commercial_n_1219141.html">dating site "Big and Beautiful" claimed that NBC Sports rejected its ad</a> in 2012 for featuring a plus-sized model in its scandalous ad. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/inside-the-ridiculously-complicated-process-for-buying-a-super-bowl-ad-2012-1?op=1">The network told us that the site never even sent in an official request to buy a spot.</a></p>
<p>Adultery dating site <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/watch-here-is-the-super-bowl-ad-for-the-cheating-website-that-fox-rejected-2011-1">Ashley Madison has also claimed to have submitted ads that were banned by Super Bowl bigwigs.</a></p>
<p>But it is a decent publicity strategy.</p>
<p>"I remember one year when the networks wouldn't allow one of the Bud Light spots in the game, so Bud actually released it online as, 'the Super Bowl ad the networks wouldn't let you see,'" <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/inside-the-ridiculously-complicated-process-for-buying-a-super-bowl-ad-2012-1?op=1">Tanin Blumberg,an account director at Goodby, Silverstein &amp; Partners</a> and Budweiser Super Bowl ad veteran, told BI. "It was pretty smart ... got about 1 million views on YouTube in just a few days."</p>
<p>Pornhub is asking users to vote on whether or not they believe the tame ad should air or not.</p>
<p>Pornhub did not respond immediately to a request for comment.</p>

Why Pornhub's 'Rejected' Super Bowl Ad Is Likely A Bogus Stunt

<p class="p1"><strong>1. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/cheil-worldwide-iris-investment-2014-11">Samsung's ad agency Cheil has taken a stake in UK-based creative agency Iris Worldwide.</a></strong> No terms of the deal were disclosed, but Cheil does have the option to increase its "significant" stake to 100% in the next five years. </p>
<p class="p2"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><strong>2. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sony-pulls-sexist-playstation-ad-2014-11">Sony has moved quickly to remove an innuendo-ridden ad from its European PlayStation YouTube channel.</a></strong> The ad, to promote the PS4's Remote Play, was presumably removed due to its sexist connotations. </span></p>
<p class="p2"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><strong>3. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-sun-digital-paywal-subscribers-2014-11">The UK's biggest newspaper The Sun claims it has doubled its number of paid-for digital describers year on year to 225,000 users.</a></strong> However, The Sun's total paid-for sales (which includes copies of the print newspaper) are still down 2.2% on 2013. </span></p>
<p class="p2"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><strong>4. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/coca-cola-is-launching-fairlife-milk-2014-11">Coca-Cola milk doesn't immediately sound too appealing, but the company says its new milk product will "rain money."</a></strong> The drink is called Fairlife and will sell for twice the price of regular milk when it hits US store shelves in December. </span></p>

<p class="p2"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><strong>10. <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/france/11250670/Grenoble-to-replace-street-advertising-with-trees-and-community-spaces.html">French city Grenoble plans to ban all outdoor ads and replace them with trees and "community spaces," The Telegraph reports.</a></strong> The city's 326 advertising signs will be removed between January and April next year and its contract with JCDecaux will be terminated as they no longer "correspond to the expectations of the inhabitants who want to reclaim public space," the the city's mayor's office said. </span></p>

Doritos Is Now Making A Taco Bell Flavored Chip [THE BRIEF]

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>While watching "House of Cards," which brands do you notice the most?</p><p>Claire Underwood (Robin Wright) can usually be spotted on her Apple iPhone. Remy Denton (Mahershala Ali) is usually around a Buick. Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) is always wearing his IWC watch.</p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">A total of 105 different brands appear in season 3 of "House of Cards." </span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">That may sound like a lot; however, its actually a decline from the 129 brands and the 134 brands that appear in seasons one and two, respectively, of the Netflix political series.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><a href="http://concavebt.com/">Concave</a>, a market research company that tracks and analyzes brand presence in entertainment content including TV shows and film, </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">tracked the branded companies in all three seasons of the show.</span></p><p>Concave provided Business Insider with a list of all the brands they found in "House of Cards."</p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Here are the top 10 featured in season 3:</span></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">Apple<br>IWC<br>Chevrolet<br>Washington Nationals<br>Avaya<br>Cartier<br>Nokia<br>Samsung<br>Blackberry<br>Dell</br></br></br></br></br></br></br></br></br></p><p>Below, you can see the top 20 brands across all three seasons:</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The list of most visible brands across seasons, differs slightly. Samsung moves up the list while CNN and NBC also appear in the top 10.</span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Here are </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">the top five brands used by the different characters in the show.</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">As noted in the slide above, Apple is among the top five brands of four actors while Samsung is associated in the top five brands for seven actors. </span></p><p>Nokia, Dell, and Samsung are brands used by secondary characters including Heather Dunbar (Elizabeth Marvel) and Seth Grayson (Derek Cecil).</p><p>How long are you seeing all of these brands on screen?</p><p>According to Concave, there are nearly four hours of brands visible in season three. That's more screen time than in season one, but less than season two. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">However, you probably wouldn't notice most of the brands.</span></p><p>Under 10% of the brands seen on screen across each season are close-ups. Most of the brand time on screen is in subtle, discreet, or background appearances.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Here's the difference in how Concave discerns the different categories of visibility.</span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The brands you'll most likely recognize are the ones with close-up or obvious appearances. Be a regular at more than one bar. It's a good hedge, if like me, you've been </span>banned from a few</p><p>2. Be patient. There's no line to get drinks in your refrigerator.   </p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">3. Always tip more than you should. Tipping at a regular spot is also a good </span><span style="color: #222222; line-height: 1.5em;">investment.   </span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">4. Never ask for a 'good pour.' That's asking for something for free, and </span><span style="color: #222222; line-height: 1.5em;">bartenders can get fired for that. Never tip a bartender on a free round. Thank him or her and tip big on the </span>next round or when you close out.</p><p>6.  If you're having more than one drink, throw a card behind the bar.  You can always settle the tab in cash at the end of the night.</p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">7. Don't get drunk on beer when you're trying to pick up girls. When you're </span>in the bathroom every fifteen minutes, she's checking out your competition.</p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">8. Never take off your suit jacket. Nobody ever pictures a drunk in a suit and </span>tie. Remove the jacket; destroy the illusion.</p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">9. Don't treat a bartender like he's just some guy waiting until he finds a </span>real job. The bartender at the St. Regis has a Range Rover and a beach house.</p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">10. Drink where your wallet is comfortable. If you want to buy a woman a drink, ask her permission. If the bartender </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">has to say, "This is from the guy who didn't have the balls to approach you," you've got no chance.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">13. If you are having friends meet you out, clear your tab before they show </span>up. It's not cool if they end up paying, but more important, it'll make you look like the drunk that you are.</p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">14. </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Do what you want to do, not what people expect you to do. If you want to </span>put ice in your Pinot Grigio, go for it. </p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">15. Don't try ordering a drink from a bar back. But go ahead and throw him a </span>fiver; he's taking the bus home at 3am.</p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">16. Don't argue about a tab. If you're arguing, it's probably because it's over a </span>material amount of money. "When in Rome…" Unless you're on the beach, skip the piña coladas, or </span>anything else that takes the bartender 5 minutes to make on a busy night.</p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">18. Don't preemptively mention the tip. There's no need to ever say, "I'll take </span>care of you tonight, ______." (Insert: Pal, Chief, Bubba, Hon).</p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">19. Shots generally only serve one purpose, to speed up the effects of </span>alcohol. There's a time and a place, and that time and place comes around less frequently after the age of 30.</p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">20. Always know what you are going to order ahead of time. Have a go-to </span>drink in your repertoire. An old fashioned, vodka martini, a Budweiser, or even just a house chard. Sit down, take a sip, relax, and then figure out what you really want to drink.</p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">21. I've lived exactly half my life in the U.K. and half in the U.S. Now, I'm returning to Britain to live, and to set up Business Insider's London office. (<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/business-insider-is-hiring-journalists-in-london-2014-6">We're hiring!</a>)</p>
<p>I've visited Britain once or twice a year since the move, of course. But it turns out that <em>living</em> in Britain today is a vastly different experience than <em>visiting</em> it - and that has made me a foreigner in my homeland.</p>
<p>As always, the biggest changes are the littlest changes, too. It's funny how life is composed of myriad small things, and when they change it's a culture shock. Here are all the things that have changed in Britain in the last 20 years in ways that make me feel more American:</p>
<h3>Global warming is allowing palm trees to grow all over London</h3>

You <em>can</em> grow them here, because even in winter the temperature rarely falls below freezing (unlike New York this year, where there was ice on the ground from January through to April). Nonetheless, palms were a thing of the Mediterranean, not Britain.</p>
<p>But London is now warmer and sunnier than it was when I left, and people are growing palm trees in their front yards.</p>
<p>It's not exactly Miami of course. But only an American climate-change denier could miss the fact that suddenly <em>there are palm trees all over London!</em> Here's a web site for Brits who want to <a href="http://www.myclimatechangegarden.com/blog/grow-palm-trees">take advantage of climate change by growing palm trees, banana plants and yuccas</a>.</p>
<h3>Everyone in Britain now has the exact same trash can</h3>

(Note the palm trees, too!)</p></div><p></p></div></div>In America, everyone has the constitutional right to choose their own trash can, and everyone's trash cans are slightly different because of it. Freedom! Not so in the U.K. Here, the local government will give you a standard set of "wheelie bins," for free. These rubbish bins have wheels on the bottom and a bar on the top that hooks to a lifting device on the garbage trucks. Workers just wheel the bins to the truck, and an arm on the truck tips the bins into the back, automatically.</p>
<p>The result is that trash collectors never have to actually touch the garbage they're hauling. It's amazingly smart: Trash collection is faster, quieter and for the workers slightly more dignified (how many times have you seen an American trash collector stoop to pick up individual items of spilled trash in the street?). It makes U.S. garbage collecting look old-fashioned by comparison.</p>
<p>Of course, this would be regarded as a socialist plot in the U.S. Can you imagine what Fox News would say if the government required Americans to all have the same garbage pails? Worse, the private company that collects the rubbish in North London is <em>French.</em> The new rules some town councils here are imposing are even more anti-libertarian: Recycling will be collected every week, and landfill trash will be collected only once every two weeks - giving residents an obvious incentive to become much more careful about what they use and dispose of.</p>
<h3>There are only two types of milk in British Starbucks</h3>

Good luck.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Starbucks invaded Britain just as thoroughly as it has the U.S. In America, as is our God-given right, Starbucks provides four types of milk: Whole milk, skimmed milk, soy milk, and half-and-half (which is half milk and half cream - Americans like it in coffee).</p>
<p>In Britain, I have discovered that many branches of Starbucks only offer skim and semi-skimmed milk.</p>
<p>You can get whole milk, but you have to be "that guy," and go back to the counter to ask to borrow the stuff that they use to make frozen drinks. That's the phrase you have to use by the way: "Can I<em> borrow</em> the whole milk please?" Then they give you the plastic can and you have to hand it back immediately.</p>

<h3>Everyone in Britain is now Polish</h3>

So is my real estate agent.</p>
<p>The Poles are everywhere in the U.K., doing everything. You're more likely to encounter a Polish accent in London than you are a genuine cockney accent. When the Iron Curtain fell in the late 1980s, a huge wave of Polish immigrants landed in Britain. First they went into the construction trades, and in the mid-2000s there was a lot of grumbling about an invasion of "Polish plumbers" taking people's jobs. Today, you're more likely to find the Poles in finance and services.</p>
<p>Now, high streets all over London have "Polski Sklep" shops selling ... I don't know. It's in Polish! Interestingly, the Brits have come to love the Poles. Mostly because they'll do anything, and they show up on time to do it, I'm told.</p>
<h3>British people have stopped using soap</h3>

<p>All these plastic bottles contain body wash. The only bars of bath soap available are sitting on the bottom shelf, ignored by customers. And there are only three brands to choose from: Dove, Simple and Imperial Leather.</p>
<p>The Brits have largely abandoned old-fashioned bars of soap in favor of body wash, it seems.</p>
<p>It's an odd choice given the country's obsession with recycling and the environment - body wash obviously requires more energy intensive packaging than hard soap, and I suspect a bottle of body wash disappears more quickly than soap does.</p>
<p>I'm told that "anti-bacterial" products are the growth area in bath products. Soap - which sits in its own gloop between uses - doesn't fit that bill. (Also, there is something liberating about not having to pick the hairs off the surface of the bar.)</p>
<h3>KFC is terrible at defending its intellectual property</h3>

("Halal"!) Hmm. Every main street in the U.K. - and the rest of Europe, frankly - features a fried chicken joint that steals unsubtlely from KFC's brand. "Dixie Fried Chicken," "Southern Fried Chicken" and - my favorite - "Hentucky Fried Chicken" are rife over here. The most wrong of all? "<a href="http://www.yell.com/biz/yankee-s-fried-chicken-london-6260630/">Yankee's Fried Chicken</a>." McDonald's and Subway do not suffer from the same problem.</p>
<h3>America has far surpassed the U.K. when it comes to beer and cocktails</h3>

They served Budweiser, Coors or Miller, and that was pretty much it. British pubs, of course, served delicious "real" ale.</p>
<p>But there has been a gastronomic revolution in America, and now U.S. pubs compete to offer increasingly vast ranges of craft beers. It's not uncommon to be handed a beer "menu" in America, and to be faced with an intimidating library of dozens of obscure bottles at the bar. And the speakeasy trend has revived a cocktail culture that encourages adventurous, thoughtful drinking.</p>
<p>Yet most British pubs still seem to sell only about 10 beers at any one time.</p>
<p>As for cocktails, Britain's drinking culture has been hobbled by the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcoholic_spirits_measure">Weights and Measures Act of 1963</a> which banned bartenders from shorting customers' spirits. It requires a minimum amount of booze in each drink. The unintended consequence is that pubs now <em>only</em> serve the minimum measure in each mixed drink - 25 ml.</p>
<p>Ask for a gin and tonic - the classic English summer afternoon drink - and you'll be handed a dribble of gin in a glass of half-melted ice cubes. The tonic will come separately in a little bottle, and you dilute the drink yourself. Want some lemon or lime? Don't forget to ask - it won't come standard. It's incredibly depressing, because there's no incentive for bartenders to jazz it up with cucumbers or club soda the way they do in America.</p>
<p>If you want a decent gin and tonic, you have to go to New York.</p>
<h3>Brits like to buy pop music in bulk, at a discount</h3>
<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Jim Edwards / BI</span></p><p class="caption">I'm a little behind on my listening.</p></div><p></p></div></div>As a kid, I remember the "Now that's what I call music!" albums, CD compilations of recent pop hits.</p>
<p>During my time in America I assumed they passed the way of all things.</p>
<p>Not so! Currently on sale here in the U.K.: "Now ... No. 87." <em>Eighty-seven!</em> That's a lot of undifferentiated pop music. Virgin and EMI pump them out at a rate of about three per year.</p>
<p>They're the biggest-selling compilation albums ever, with more than 100 million sold to date. The franchise even has its own TV channel here in Britain.</p>
<p>Who knew that music for people not that interested in music would turn out to be such a big business?</p>
<h3>Public transport infrastructure in Britain is much more advanced than in the U.S.</h3>

<p>And it's indicative of the U.K.'s commitment to public transport. The London Underground map (below) is incredibly dense with both subway and overground rail lines. (<a href="https://www.tfl.gov.uk/cdn/static/cms/documents/london-rail-and-tube-services-map.pdf">Here's a PDF</a>.) I've published it here with the New York rail map beneath it, so you can see how many lines appear to be "missing" from rail-empty New York. Note that the London's network serves a smaller population than New York's.</p>
<p>Even the buses run like clockwork here, and many bus stops (and all train stations) have a digital display telling you how many minutes you have to wait for the next one. It makes getting from A to B incredibly easy.</p>
<p>This is something that America really needs to worry about. Because (proportionally) few Americans travel extensively abroad, America as a whole doesn't seem realize how far behind the rest of the world it's falling in terms of public infrastructure. If you've been to a major European hub, or any of the big cities further East, you'll know that returning to JFK is like stepping into a moderately competent developing country, in 1975.</p>
<p>The Republican Party has been successful in stopping major public infrastructure spending in the U.S. (The most famous example being Gov. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Access_to_the_Region%27s_Core">Chris Christie's veto of the ARC rail tunnel</a> into New York.) But infrastructure is literally the structure on which the free market sits - because private businesses can't just build international airports or rail systems on their own.</p>
<p>Let the infrastructure dwindle, and the country on top of it will dwindle. A stark example of this was the Long Island Railroad fiasco at the Belmont Stakes this year: 100,000 people saw the race, and LIRR planned extra trains to get horse racing fans to and from the venue. But the <a href="http://www.metro.us/newyork/news/local/2014/06/08/new-yorkers-sound-lirr-delays-belmont-stakes/">trains moved so slowly it took five hours to evacuate the whole stadium</a> - revelers were still making their way home at 11 p.m. at night.</p>
<p>That may sound trivial - who cares about a horse race? - but when the self-professed greatest country in the world can't get people from A to B on a train, it's embarrassing. This "problem" was solved years ago in Britain.</p>
