'Birdman' And 'Boyhood' Lead List Of 2015 Golden Globes Nominations

What’s the most on-trend travel destination going to be in 2020? It’s Bhutan, according to Lonely Planet, which has put the tiny Asian nation at the top of its Best in Travel 2020 book, an annual publication of its top 10 countries, cities, regions and best-value destinations for the year ahead. The inclusion of <a href="https://www.scmp.com/topics/bhutan" class="link-text">Bhutan</a> is all about sustainability.Often described as the world’s last Shangri-La, the Himalayan kingdom is aiming to become the world’s first 100 per cent organic nation next year, banning the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides in all farms. It is already the only carbon-negative country, removing more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than it contributes. “Bhutan really taps into one of the themes of this year’s Best in Travel, which is the growing awareness in sustainability and in looking after the things that make our world so beautiful,” says Tom Hall, vice-president of experience at Lonely Planet. “Bhutan is playing a leading role in that. There are many other reasons to visit Bhutan: incredible monasteries, fantastic festivals and classic Himalayan trekking. “It’s got a lot of things that travellers are interested in at the moment,” says Hall. It is not a cheap place to visit, though; the book points out its strict “high-value, low-impact” tourism policy that issues seven- or 14-day entry permits to foreigners, which are only valid for Thimphu, the capital, and the town of Paro. Most of the country is otherwise restricted. “[The country] has a per-day charge [for tourists], but it’s not bad value if you consider what experiences are on offer there,” says Hall. The daily fee – US$200 or US$250 for most travellers, depending on the time of year you visit – means, at least, it will not be getting much more crowded after its recognition by Lonely Planet. The Central Asia Silk Road – covering Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and <keyword id="169344" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tajikistan">Tajikistan</keyword> – takes top spot in the top 10 regions list ahead of Italy’s Le Marche, Tohoku in northeast Japan and China’s Guizhou Province. “Central Asia is one of those bucket-list destinations,” says Hall. “Places like Tashkent and Samarkand are remote, but colourful, vibrant and very Instagram-friendly – images are such an important way of how people are consuming travel and travel content, and awareness of this region has grown as a result.” Japan’s Tohoku region, still recovering from the 2011 earthquake and, much more recently, <a href="https://www.scmp.com/lifestyle/travel-leisure/article/3033850/Areas%20hit%20by%20Typhoon%20Hagibis%20brace%20for%20more%20floods%20as%20heavy%20rain%20falls%20in%20Japan" class="link-text">Typhoon Hagibis</a> , makes the list as “it’s a much less visited part of Japan, but it’s easily accessible and you can explore saké breweries, mountain temples and onsen,” says Halluizhou Province also drew praise from Lonely Planet as a must-visit region. “The centre of its capital, <a href="https://www.scmp.com/comment/insight-opinion/article/2148468/shenzhen-singapore-guiyang-who-else-can-hong-kong-fall" class="link-text">Guiyang</a>, has a lot of character, with artisan business, quiet alleyways, cafes and craft bars,” says Hall. “Out in the countryside there’s a feeling of ‘old China’, but it’s all connected by high speed rail so it’s easier to get to than ever.” Asian destinations featured in other categories, too. The intimate city of Kochi in Kerala, South India, placed seventh in the top 10 cities list, while the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh – home to the erotic sculptures at the Khajuraho group of Hindu and Jain temples, and stunning wildlife in Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve and Pench National Park – placed third in top 10 list for best value destinations. However, topping that list is <keyword id="8692" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indonesia">Indonesia</keyword>’s East Nusa Tenggara; specifically, the area east of the famous Komodo National Park that was recently threatened with closure to visitors. “If you move east of Bali and Lombok you leave the crowds behind,” says Hall, singling out diving on the Alor Archipelago and the many pristine beaches as highlights. “It’s a place for independent travel and it’s like Indonesia was 15 years ago, but it’s [also] changing very quickly.” Every year, Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel lists start with nominations from its community of editors, researchers, locals and influencers, which are ranked by a panel of judges to create a list containing unique, compelling and topical reasons to visit various destinations in the year ahead. England came second on the top 10 countries list, with North Macedonia in third. “England represents better value now than it has for a while because of the drop in its currency,” says Hall. “It’s worth keeping an eye on. Anyone coming to England will find that it’s an extremely welcoming place for visitors – as it always has been.” However, the main reason for its inclusion is the opening in 2020 of the England Coast Path, which will be the longest managed and waymarked coastal path in the world. “It’s a long walk – about 3,000 miles [4,830km] – but it’s a really interesting way to explore England,” says Hall. Here Are The Odds On The 2015 Golden Globe Movie Nominations

The 63-year-old actor just won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture (Comedy) for his performance in "Birdman."
Keaton beat out Bill Murray ("St. Vincent"), Ralph Fiennes ("The Grand Budapest Hotel"), Christoph Waltz ("Big Eyes"), and Joaquin Phoenix ("Inherent Vice.")
This is Keaton's first Golden Globe Award, although he was nominated in 2003 for his performance in the television event, "Live From Baghdad."
Keaton has also received a BAFTA nomination for this performance. He has taken home several awards for this performance, including The Chicago Film Critics' Award, The Boston Society of Film Critics' Award, and The Dallas-Fort Worth Critics' Association Award.

Gorka, she said, refused to answer anything."Gorka stood up after me and said, 'Well, I've been invited here under false pretenses. I couldn't possibly address this level of granularity,'" Bloom said. "He made it sound like he had no idea that they were going to ask us these questions."Watts, a former Army officer and FBI agent, confirmed this description of events, characterizing Gorka's performance as a "disaster.""Instead of participating in the panel the way he was supposed to, he was kind of grandstanding," Watts said. "He said, 'I'm going to stand up because I'm a lecturer and I want to see the crowd,' and I thought, this is bulls---. You don't act like that."Bloom and Watts also said he tried to use the panel as a platform to sell his book."He actually carried around his book and was basically trying to sell his book to people in the crowd," Watts said. "It was low class."The episode encapsulates the concerns that several people in the national-security community have about Gorka.In conversations with Business Insider, several national-security experts questioned Gorka's credibility in their field, saying he is often dismissed as an outspoken conservative pundit who lacks the chops to serve in the highest levels of the White House advising on national-security policy.Gorka is a deputy assistant to the president for the Strategic Initiatives Group, a new White House organization that US officials <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/conservative-pundit-sebastian-gorka-brings-global-jihadist-movement-theory-into-white-house-1487650120">have said</a> is like a parallel National Security Council (NSC). The organization has the power to write executive orders, according to The Wall Street Journal.Gorka reports to Trump's chief strategist, Stephen Bannon, who first noticed Gorka through his appearances on Fox News and later offered him a job at Breitbart, <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/conservative-pundit-sebastian-gorka-brings-global-jihadist-movement-theory-into-white-house-1487650120?mod=e2twp">according to</a> The Washington Post. Gorka <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/conservative-pundit-sebastian-gorka-brings-global-jihadist-movement-theory-into-white-house-1487650120?mod=e2twp">told The Journal</a> that he also reports to Trump adviser Jared Kushner and White House chief of staff Reince Priebus. Gorka also advised the Trump campaign during the election.When Business Insider asked him for comment by email, Gorka called Bloom's and Watts' characterization of events at the 2016 panel "fallacious" but did not dispute any specific points. He did, however, advise Business Insider not to report on his participation in the conference because it was a closed event.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div><h2>'The Simon Cowell of counterterrorism'</h2>Terrorism and national-security experts have been going after Gorka on Twitter for weeks."I call him the Simon Cowell of counterterrorism," Watts told Business Insider.Watts said he's met Gorka about a half-dozen times on panels and conferences over the past several years and added that he's "always very negative and very controversial."Michael S. Smith II, a terrorism analyst who has advised members of Congress and White House officials, said "no one has anything nice to say" about Gorka. Smith said he has the level of expertise "one would expect from a Congressional intern.""His work is of little interest because he has never - not that I can think of - contributed anything to the body of knowledge which informs understandings of threats posed by the Salafi-jihadist groups of interest to him," Smith told Business Insider.Smith said a top counterterrorism official at the National Security Council emailed Gorka on his first day at the White House to recommend that he talk to Smith. Smith said he responded politely to the introduction.Stephen Walt, a professor of international affairs at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, also said he has reservations about Gorka influencing policy in the White House."Gorka does not have much of a reputation in serious academic or policymaking circles," Walt told Business Insider. "He has never published any scholarship of significance and his views on Islam and US national security are extreme even by Washington standards. His only real 'qualification' was his prior association with Breitbart News, which would be a demerit in any other administration."Other prominent terrorism analysts such as Will McCants of the Brookings Institution and Hassan Hassan of the Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy, both of whom have authored widely read books on the terrorist group ISIS, have questioned Gorka's position in the White House on Twitter recently."Disdaining complexity may endear you to a certain kind of warfighter but makes for terrible analysis &amp; policymaking," McCants <a href="https://twitter.com/will_mccants/status/834057682227171328">wrote</a> on Twitter, linking to a recent <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/for-a-trump-adviser-an-odyssey-from-the-fringes-of-washington-to-the-center-of-power/2017/02/20/0a326260-f2cb-11e6-b9c9-e83fce42fb61_story.html?utm_term=.f85cf8bc773b">Washington Post story</a> on Gorka.Hassan replied, <a href="https://twitter.com/hxhassan/status/834059972635922434">writing</a>, "Gorka working with top minds like" Defense Secretary James Mattis and National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster "is just weird."Some in the national-security community have defended Gorka.Alberto Fernandez, a former US ambassador who led the State Department's Center for Strategic Counterterrorism Communications under President Barack Obama, said he's known Gorka for several years."He is a good choice because he has a more solid grasp of the ideological challenge than his NSC political appointee counterparts in the previous administration," Fernandez told Business Insider.He said much of the criticism of Gorka seems to be "politically motivated."Some of the criticism is "by people who would have been in a Hillary Clinton White House or who never questioned the Obama administration's own grasp of Salafi-jihadism," Fernandez said.But the criticism comes from both sides of the aisle, according to Bloom. Smith, for example, says he voted for Trump."The issue for us is not the Trump part of it or the Fox News or conservative <keyword id="6358883" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Politics">politics</keyword>," said Bloom, who has appeared alongside Gorka on Fox News. "It's that this guy has absolutely no business speaking about terrorism. He needs to sit down and read a few books that he didn't write."<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div><h2>Media clashes</h2>Bloom, the Georgia State University terrorism expert who was on the DIA panel, has clashed with Gorka.Bloom says it started with a <a href="http://public.media.foxnews.com/2015/12/07/kelly_gorka_120715_WMPG4.mp4">segment on Fox News in December 2015</a> during which she appeared with Gorka. She rolled her eyes while he was being introduced, not knowing that the cameras were already showing her on-screen.She said she got several emails from Gorka the next day demanding an apology."If you are so thin-skinned that someone questions your bona fides and you fold like a house of cards, I mean, grow up," Bloom said.Gorka confirmed that he "requested an apology for [Bloom's] markedly unprofessional behavior" on the Fox segment. He also accused her of using "ethnic slurs" in referring to him on social media."Disappointing coming from someone teaching at a university," Gorka said in an email to Business Insider.Bloom forwarded part of her correspondence with Gorka to Business Insider, but was unable to recover all the emails from that incident.But Gorka did attack her in a <a href="https://twitter.com/sebgorka/status/753840340591796224">tweet</a> last year, calling her "disgusting."<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>The tweet linked to a 2016 <a href="http://www.mediaite.com/tv/cnn-commentator-goes-off-on-guest-for-liberal-kneejerk-reaction-after-terrorist-attacks/">story</a> about conservative commentator and former CIA intelligence officer Buck Sexton clashing with Bloom during a segment on CNN. Bloom has also ripped Gorka on Twitter more recently.Gorka has also fought with Smith, the terrorism analyst who has advised members of Congress and White House officials.In recent weeks, Smith has been going after Gorka on Twitter, questioning his qualifications and using the hashtag #FakeTerrorismExpert to refer to him.On Tuesday evening, Smith said, Gorka called him to express concern about Smith's "animus" toward him and threatened to bring his tweets to the attention of the White House legal counsel."I'm mostly tweeting links to news stories about him," Smith told Business Insider on Tuesday night, adding: "He was planning on bringing to the attention of the White House legal counsel my 'obsessiveness' with him, as I suppose is evidenced by my tweets about him."In an email to Business Insider on Wednesday morning, Gorka disputed this characterization."Mr. Smith has been sending disparaging emails to [US government] officials about me and my work and I indicated that I may have to consult with legal staff at the [White House] about what he is doing," Gorka said. "However I ended the discussion by inviting him to meet at the [Eisenhower Executive Office Building] for a coffee to discuss why exactly he feels the need to constantly be tweeting about me."Smith said Gorka was "berating him" and nearly yelling on the call.According to Smith, Gorka said he looks at Smith's Twitter feed once or twice a day and was bothered by Smith's "incessant berating" of his "professional acumen," to which Smith asked, "Are you defeating jihad by monitoring my Twitter feed?"Gorka later said he wanted to know why Smith was attacking him."Put yourself in my shoes," Gorka said on the call, according to Smith, adding that the two had never met and that he had not attacked Smith.Later, Gorka said that it was strange for Smith to question his qualifications when the TV appearance Smith has pinned to his Twitter feed is two years old, according to Smith.Gorka also referenced a tweet Smith has since deleted, in which he posted a screenshot of the NSC official recommending that Gorka talk to Smith. "The ball is in their court right now."<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div><h2>Ideology and 'the war of ideas'</h2>Experts have expressed hesitancy about Gorka's ideology.Gorka told The Washington Post recently that he "jettison[s]" the view of past administrations that the terrorism problem is "nuanced and complicated." He said terrorism is rooted in Islam and portions of the Quran."Anybody who downplays the role of religious ideology ... they are deleting reality to fit their own world," he told The Post.The Council on American-Islamic Relations referred to Gorka's "Islamophobic views" <a href="https://www.cair.com/press-center/press-releases/13926-cair-concerned-about-more-islamophobes-added-to-trump-transition-team.html">in a statement</a> about his wife Katharine, who worked with Trump's transition team for the Department of Homeland Security.A counterterrorism analyst in the special-operations community, who asked not to be identified by name over concerns of professional reprisal, told Business Insider that Gorka was seen as a "figure on the fringes" with an ideology "rooted more in fear-mongering than in sound strategy and policy."For instance, Gorka and others in Trump's circle - including the president himself - make a point to use the term "radical Islamic terrorism." Ousted National Security Adviser Michael Flynn had similar views.Some experts, however, have defended Gorka's views on terrorism.James Carafano, a national-security expert at the conservative Heritage Foundation who said he's known Gorka for about 15 years, spoke to The Wall Street Journal and said Gorka likes to focus on "the war of ideas.""I think the notion that we can fight the ideology without discussing and referencing the religion is kind of ridiculous," Carafano told The Journal. "It's like combating communism without discussing Karl Marx."Gorka, like Flynn, also seems to have bought into the idea of an ideological war between radical Islam and the West - the same idea that ISIS itself promotes."Al Qaeda, ISIS, all of these groups are totalitarians - either you surrender to them or they will kill you," Gorka told The Washington Post.The Post described a scene from an event Gorka spoke at in Florida three days after the election. He told the crowd, which had paid to see him speak, that he wanted to show them an image he was "not meant to show usually."The photograph showed "a dead, bloodied brown-skinned man, lying on the ground next to an AK-47 assault rifle," according to The Post. The audience cheered."We can win now," Gorka said. "We can win!"<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div><h2>Questions about credentials</h2>Gorka was born in England to Hungarian refugees, according to The Journal. He holds a doctorate in political science from a university in Budapest and has taught at the Joint Special Operations University, the National Defense University, and the Marine Corps University.Gorka was also a reserve intelligence soldier in the British Army Reserve for a few years and taught at the George C. Marshall Center in Germany, which educated NATO and allied military officers, and the Pentagon-funded College of International Security Affairs, according to The Washington Post.Gorka has also led lectures and seminars for FBI agents.The Post described his academic credentials as "thin," especially in the subject area of Islam.Unlike many scholars in his field, Gorka does not speak Arabic. He's also never lived in a majority-Muslim country, according to The Post. He said he's read the Quran, but only English translations of the texts, which could make nuances harder to detect."You don't have to speak Arabic to do good work in this field, but the people who don't speak Arabic realize that there are limitations to what you can do," Bloom said.Bloom also pointed to Gorka's apparent lack of academic credentials. Several other sources within the community of terrorism and national-security experts and analysts also said Gorka's work is not widely cited among such professionals.Smith portrayed Gorka's work as not being taken seriously."Terrorism researchers and analysts are largely unfamiliar with his work because he is neither a terrorism researcher engaged in novel research work, data collector, nor a formally trained intelligence analyst," Smith said.Gorka doesn't seem bothered by his unconventional background. He suggested to The Post that he writes more for people fighting terrorism in the field than for academics in the US.And of course the administration he's working for includes many people who aren't part of the Washington establishment. <div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image on-image"></div></div>In Vladimir Putin's quest to amass more power, the Russian government has <a href="http://www.cnbc.com/id/100805382#.">become increasingly corrupt</a> and ever more dangerous for critics and political activists.Case in point - <a href="http://www.vox.com/2015/3/4/8149751/nemtsov-murder-russia-politics">the suspicious murder of Boris Nemtsov</a> as he walked home across a busy bridge in Moscow almost two weeks ago.We recently sat down with Ilya Ponomarev - a representative in the lower house of the Russian Parliament who has been banned from Russia for his opposition to Putin - and got his take on what's going on in Russia today.Ponomarev believes that the people who killed Nemtsov were affiliated with one of Russia's state security forces, and says that his murder was meant as a "message to Russian elites... and a message to the West."Yet, he thinks that in general Russians are closer aligned to Americans than they are to Europeans and that change will come to the country as early as 2017: "The actual uprising might start in 2017... We will have major elections in 2016, and that is when economic and financial resources might get depleted by that time because of sanctions and issues with financial liquidities. All the problems will mount and be at their height in 2017. We need to be ready and we need to present Russia with a clear program, with a clear vision of Russia after Putin."Ponomarev is a former president of Yukos Oil, the former oil and gas giant that was effectively shut down in 2007 by the Russian government, which redistributed its assets to state companies. He was elected to the <a href="Ilya%20Ponomarev:">Russian State Duma</a> in 2007, and was the only member who voted against the annexation of Crimea last year. The final vote in Russia's lower house was 445 to 1. <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/29/world/europe/Russia-Duma-Crimea.html?_r=0">Colleagues warned him beforehand</a>, saying things like "Putin will crush you," and "Don't ruin your career." The year before, he was the only member of the Duma not to support <a href="http://mic.com/articles/58649/russia-s-anti-gay-law-spelled-out-in-plain-english">Russia's anti-gay "propaganda" law</a>. Eventually, in August 2014, Ponomarev and several of his aides were banned from Russia (along with several of his aides) and falsely charged with funneling money out of the <a href="http://sk.ru/news/">Skolkovo Foundation</a> - an organization that supports high-tech startups - to finance protests against Putin.Though he has been banned from Russia, he is still an active member of the Duma. He says that since his constituency voted him in, they are the only ones with the power to revoke his mandate. Speaking before an audience at the <a href="http://www.commonwealthclub.org">Commonwealth Club</a>, the bearded and battered politico spoke about Putin with disdain. He believes that Putin "wants people to negotiate with him and he wants to have the tradeoffs here and there and spheres of influence." To Ponomarev, Putin is a creature of the last century.However, throughout the night, Ponomarev talked with a glimmer in his eye - his wife, whom he had not seen for months, had finally reunited with him after clearing up a visa problem in Bulgaria. We talked to Ilya Ponomarev before his presentation. Here's what he had to say:The following is a transcript of our conversation with Ponomarev; it has been edited for clarity and length.BUSINESS INSIDER: Who do you think killed Boris Nemtsov?ILYA PONOMAREV: I think it was somebody very close to Putin. I have doubts that it was his direct order, although he has created this very system which killed [Nemtsov]. I think it was one of the clans who are fighting for influence on Putin. And they want to trigger instability and be those saviors to offer a solution to everything.BI: Are you worried that what happened to Nemtsov might happen to you?IP: We have a Russian proverb - "Those who are doomed to be sunk will never be hanged." I think that you shouldn't run away from what is in front of you. You should do what you have to do, and leave to it. What can you do? Hire bodyguards? Stop doing anything? It will not save you either.BI: Are politicians scared of Putin? Are there people looking at what you and Nemtsov have done and being inspired, in that sense?IP: Some politicians are scared and some are extremely apologetic, actually. And I feel very sorry for this because some people who are like my friends from the left flank, they praise Putin because they see him as the fighter against American imperialism - which he is not. You know, why would you select between American imperialism and Russian imperialism? To my mind, it's exactly the same thing. Others - conservatives - they say 'Oh, Putin is a real leader, he's a true man, he stays [firm] on his position, he's not like this weak Obama.' And also they are very much wrong. Because Putin is not a strong man, he is actually a man that put himself into a corner, and he's fighting and biting from that corner, being very weak.BI: Has anyone else you know been fined, kidnapped, or murdered?IP: We have a lot of people - journalists - that were murdered in Russia. But my own situation is pretty unique. I haven't seen my wife for half a year. She lives now in Bulgaria and couldn't get her here because of visa [problems].[Editor's note: Since 1992, there have been <a href="https://www.cpj.org/killed/europe/russia/">56 journalists killed in Russia</a>.]BI: How would you best describe your political ideology?IP: The best description would be that I am a progressive libertarian.BI: Which political figures do you look up to, people that you base your ideas upon?IP: I think that my political position of course is very much influenced by thinkers of the left, and those are different people. I pay a lot of attention to what was written by Marx and by Lenin, but also by modern leftists like Wallenstein. I very much pay a lot of attention to what has been written by Noam Chomsky. We have such thinkers in Russia as well, like Boris Kagarlitsky, who is a good friend. My political tradition is one the left, but I think that more modern leftists, they sometimes get stuck with this vision of large government and social benefits and everything and that's against what is my position, because I think that the ultimate vision of Marx, Engels and those people was to eliminate government entities and to give as much power to the people. And in modern standing that means direct democracy, that means all the power to the communities, it means gradually eliminating all government oppression on the society. And 100 years ago, leftists' major allies were labor unions. In the world of today, I think that entrepreneurs are the new emerging ruling class - I identify it as the startup class. That's the new proletariat of the 21st century. These are the people that are the drivers of that change.BI: How is it that you're still an active member of Duma?IP: From the point of view of legislation of the Constitution, my mandate has been given by my constituency. So it's only my constituency that can revoke my mandate. So until the next election, nobody is supposed to do anything. The next election is in 2016.BI: When was the last time you were elected?IP: Last time in 2011. The first time I was elected was in 2007. Originally it was a 4-year term and now it's a 5-year term. If I would not be able to campaign, I would lose my post. They can use such reasons like if I'm doing business, then they could justify that I am violating my status. But I'm cautious not to do it. They are looking through a magnifying glass from the outside. I have a group of very loyal people. We are in the minority very much, basically 10 to 15% of the population that supports what we do. It's temporary. I think that the high numbers for Putin, they will pass as soon as economic tensions mount. And then the whole situation will be flipped. It's important not to alienate people, not to receive negative reaction on yourself but we have to wait a little bit. Bolsheviks in 1914 were a dying sect, the only ones against the war, but just two and a half years later, they came to power.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div> BI: Russia is obviously a surveillance state. That being said, America has its own conundrums: NSA phone tapping, Edward Snowden, CIA torture tapes. How is the United States different from Russia in this regard?IP: I think that there are excesses that exist in all societies. I won't say it's normal to have them, but it's natural to have them. I'm watching very closely...what Snowden has done. I don't know him personally. I wanted to talk to him, but all of the security people didn't allow me to. But I think that he took the wrong approach to a very right thing which he was doing. Just the implementation was wrong. There was a clear platform to what he was doing, although of course that there were some mistakes made. I think that it's inevitable if society will be run by old-timers who are still in the paradigm of the past, so I think the real way to resolve this is if the entrepreneurs go into <keyword id="6358883" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Politics">politics</keyword> and gradually take over and push for their agenda. You named a bunch of privacy issues which are at this stage secondary to me. The primary issue is the competition between Uber and traditional taxis, or contradictions between FDA and 23 and me. That, I think is most important. And I think that we are right now - the society - is living in the Facebook era and the political system is still in the 19th century prior to the Industrial era.Why for God's sake do you need to be socially liberal and economically conservative? Or to be economically market-oriented but at the same time socially, extremely conservative? Why can't you be free in both dimensions?BI: Now let's bring our conversation to a global scale. Especially now with ISIS looming large close to Russia, what is Russia's end-goal in the Middle East?IP: I don't think there is a conscious and strategic play there. Putin is not a strategist at all. He has brilliant tactics, but he is a very bad strategist overall. And I think he is acting very opportunistically there, just to play the cards with America. He was very proud of himself when he convinced us to give up on chemical weapons so that it could be played down and prevent an invasion and that was very helpful for Obama because Obama saved his face and didn't order airstrikes at that very moment. Putin was extremely proud. That's the kind of thing Putin does. Generally, he thinks of himself as Christian. I don't think he is, but he pretends to think that he is. In terms of his ideology he's more like Bush Jr. But he's less ideological. He's [thinking] more 'how to stay in power.'BI: What is it about Putin then?IP: He's just maneuvering. He wants to be respected. He wants to be an important player in global politics. He wants people to negotiate with him and he wants to have the tradeoffs here and there and spheres of influence. He's very much a person of the 20th century in the global and geopolitical space.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div> BI: Stratfor predicted in its recent decade report that the Russian Federation will disintegrate into an archipelago of loosely-connected and more localized entities over the next decade as the ruble plunges, the price of oil declines, and the country's politics get crazier. Do you think Russia is essentially falling apart? What will be of the Russian Federation in the next 10 years?IP: Russia can fall apart. It's not because of the oil prices.... It's because what sticks a country together is a common interest of people. It has to be economically and socially profitable - beneficial - for people to be together. They should understand how they benefit from a large country. And if they start to feel like a large country is a source of problem, then the country collapses as the Soviet Union collapsed. And right now, I see a lot of alarming trends inside Russia, especially in Siberia, which I represent in the Parliament. People start to ask questions: If we mine all the natural resources - if we have all the oil, all the gas, all the coal, all the gold, all the diamonds - why the hell do we need central Russia? They are just eating at our resources. Without Moscow having a response for this, it would face very nasty questions such as one that was asked during my recent reelection campaign - it actually became a slogan of my campaign - "Stop feeding Moscow."BI: This mindset is similar to that of the <a href="http://www.economist.com/blogs/easternapproaches/2014/09/russia-and-Tatars">Tatars</a>. How is it different?IP: With Tatars, the situation is a little bit more complex. They are geographically very isolated so they need the rest of Russia. When they pump oil, they need pipelines to deliver it so they need those connections. We in Siberia don't need those connections. The only thing which actually sticks us together is the cultural similarities and the relatives that are on both sides of the Ural mountains.BI: Last question - if Putin were standing in front of you at this very moment, what would you say to him? The first words out of your mouth are...IP: There is nothing I can say. "Goodbye, Mr. Putin," that's the only thing I can say. We need to convince him that if he makes the decision to go, that we are ready to trade his personal security for peaceful resignation. That's very important because we're all afraid that he will stick to power to his deathbed and just kill a lot of people along the way. If he is willing to go, we shall buy him an island in the Caribbean or in the Pacific Ocean with nice girls - like a separate country for him.He's very much afraid of leaving. Because he is formally right now in his first term, so has another 8 years from now. Legally, he has created all the mechanisms for himself.
