It took over a decade and 1,000 hours of photography to create this picture of the Milky Way

<ul class="summary-list"><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-james-webb-space-telescope-detects-water-on-distant-planet-2022-7">NASA's James Webb Space Telescope</a> wowed astronomers with its sharp, colorful <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/james-webb-team-unveils-nasa-space-telescope-first-images-2022-7">first images</a>.</li><li>The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-hubble-space-telescope-photographs-three-galaxies-colliding-2022-2">Hubble Space Telescope</a> imaged the same sights, but JWST reveals details that were previously invisible.</li></ul><p><keyword id="6360409" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="nasa" source="Orion">NASA</keyword>'s <keyword id="12594489" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="james-webb-space-telescope" source="Orion">James Webb Space Telescope</keyword> (JWST) floored astronomers and spectators across the globe with its first full-color images on Tuesday.</p><p>Even the scientists who worked on the project were taken aback by the images, telling reporters in a Tuesday briefing that they sobbed, fell speechless, or dropped their jaws so far that they "nearly broke."</p><p>The new space snapshots reveal countless <keyword id="12206001" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="stars" source="Orion">stars</keyword>, <keyword id="12393175" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="galaxies" source="Orion">galaxies</keyword>, and fine details nobody has ever seen before. They paint the birth and death of stars in sharp, new colors and peer further into the distance than any infrared telescope has ever looked.</p><p>Until now, images like these only came from the <keyword id="12189758" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="hubble-space-telescope" source="Orion">Hubble Space Telescope</keyword>, which rocketed into Earth's orbit in 1990. But the new JWST pictures reveal the rewards of 25 years and $10 billion NASA spent on its new observatory — all in a new, wide-ranging spectrum of infrared light.</p><div type="image" title="A side by side collage of the same area taken by the Hubble and the James Webb space telescopes." height="1500" width="2000" msid="92838557" hostid="261" sizebytes="146836"></div><p>The first image, a long-exposure of a tiny portion of the sky released on Monday (above), offered a peek at the promise of JWST. On Tuesday, a succession of new pictures revealed just how much sharper and stronger the new space observatory is. These images are only warm-ups for the years of <keyword id="11896083" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="science" source="Orion">science</keyword> ahead.</p><p>"We're making discoveries, and we really haven't even started trying yet," Eric Smith, chief scientist of NASA's astrophysics division, said in the briefing.</p><h2>JWST clearly shows two stars at the center of this <keyword id="14437631" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="nebula" source="Orion">nebula</keyword>, where Hubble only saw one</h2><div type="image" title="side-by-side images of a bubbly nebula with arrows pointing to the stars at the center" height="1000" width="2000" msid="92838559" hostid="261" sizebytes="57978"></div><p>The Southern Ring Nebula is a dying star that has imploded and is slowly expelling the layers of its atmosphere in successive waves, creating ever-expanding bubbles of colorful gas. Scientists knew there were two stars at its center, but couldn't see them in images.</p><p>The new JWST picture shows the dying star, which glows red because it's surrounded by dust, right next to its white companion star.</p><h2>With other wavelengths of infrared light, JWST sees different details in the same nebula</h2><h2><div type="image" title="southern ring nebula infrared bubbles of colorful gas and dust encircle two stars" height="2328" width="2500" msid="92838561" hostid="261" sizebytes="168726"></div></h2><p>This image, captured in near-infrared wavelengths of light, shows the structure of the nebula. The blue bubble at the center is hot, ionized gas that's superheated by the leftover core of the star. In the foamy orange outer regions, made of newly formed hydrogen, rays of the starlight beam through holes in the inner bubble.</p><h2>A cluster of five galaxies is much sharper through JWST's lens</h2><div type="image" title="side by side images of cluster of five galaxies" height="1500" width="2000" msid="92838563" hostid="261" sizebytes="166418"></div><p>Four of the galaxies in this image are about 300,000 light-years away, locked in a cosmic dance as each galaxy's gravity influences the other.</p><h2>In the JWST image, you can see galaxies in the background that were invisible to Hubble</h2><div type="image" title="side by side images of galaxy cluster with arrows pointing to background galaxies" height="1500" width="2000" msid="92838565" hostid="261" sizebytes="173960"></div><p>The new telescope is 100 times stronger than Hubble, capturing far more galaxies than its predecessor ever could.</p><h2>The new image also reveals the stellar nurseries created as galaxies merge</h2><div type="image" title="side by side images of galaxy cluster with arrow pointing to region of colorful gas and dust" height="1500" width="2000" msid="92838567" hostid="261" sizebytes="170224"></div><p>"We now see gas and dust, which is being heated up in the collision between those galaxies," Mark McCaughrean, senior advisor for science and exploration at the European Space Agency, which is collaborating with NASA on the telescope, said in a livestream revealing the images.</p><p>As gas and dust get compressed and heated, they collapse into new stars. "Every dot of light we see here is an individual star, not unlike our sun, and many of these likely also have planets. And it just reminds me that our sun and our planet, and ultimately us, were formed out of the same kind of stuff that we see here."</p><h2>The JWST image reveals hundreds of stars that weren't visible before</h2><div type="image" title="star forming clouds side by side images" height="1000" width="2000" msid="92838571" hostid="261" sizebytes="134684"></div><p>"This is going to be revolutionary," Jane Rigby, a NASA scientist overseeing JWST operations, said in the briefing on Tuesday, adding, "These are incredible capabilities that we've never had before."</p>

Side-by-side images from the James Webb and Hubble space telescopes show why NASA spent 25 years and $10 billion

<br /><br /><ul><li>Astronomers at the <keyword id="8524172" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-center-of-radio-astrophysics">National Center of Radio Astrophysics</keyword> (NCRA) in India have a spotted galaxy AGC 203001 with a large ring of hydrogen gas wrapped around it.</li><li>The galaxy is 260 million light-years away from Earth.</li><li>Normally, reservoirs of neutral hydrogen gas are accompanied by star formation, but there are no new stars being born in this ring of hydrogen.</li></ul>Galaxies are made up of interstellar gas, cosmic dust, entire solar systems, and stars. Normally, these stars are born in clouds of neutral hydrogen gas. More gas, more stars.<br /><br />However, one galaxy 260 million light-years from Earth shows zero signs of star formation despite having a ring of hydrogen gas four times the size of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/milky-way-galaxy-surrounded-by-massive-radio-bubbles-stretching-hundreds-of-light-years/articleshow/71106392.cms">Milky Way</a> around it. <br /><br />Astronomers at the National Center of Radio Astrophysics (<a href="https://www.tifr.res.in/TSN/article/Wadadekar%202020%20TIFR%20release_rev.pdf">NCRA</a>) spotted galaxy AGC 203001 using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) in Pune. They found that even though the galaxy had a ring of hydrogen gas around it — there were no new stars being born. This is despite the fact that the ring is 380,000 lightyears wide, much bigger than the galaxy itself. <br /><br /><strong>Where did the stars go?<br /></strong><br />Nobody knows where and how these rings of hydrogen gas form. The most popular theory is that they are a result of galaxy colliding into other galaxies, but even that’s largely debated.<br /><br />In fact, there’s only one other galaxy discovered by scientists that’s has a hydrogen ring as big as AGC 203001, according to the study published in the <a href="https://academic.oup.com/mnras/article/492/1/1/5603752">Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society</a>.<br /><br />Normally, large reservoirs of neutral hydrogen gas around a galaxy are accompanied by new stars being born within its fold. The <keyword id="1270472" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Eagle-Nebula">Eagle Nebula</keyword>, for instance, is 5.5 million-year-old clouds of molecular hydrogen gas and dust. <br /><br />

<br />According to images taken by the Hubble Telescope, the clouds were dotted by clumps of gas — Evaporating Gaseous Globules (EGGs) — on their outer edges. Inside some of the EGGs were embryonic stars.<br /><br />Galaxy AGC 203001 as more than enough hydrogen — even though it’s exact distribution isn’t known — but no new stars.<br /><br />The team of NCRA astronomers even got some help as asked two French astronomers to take more sensitive images using the Canda-France-Hawaii-Telescope (CFHT) located in Hawaii. But even they didn’t turn up any signs of starlight.<br /><br /><strong>What’s next?<br /></strong><br />There isn’t any clear explanation for why AGC 203001 is star-less despite having copious amounts of hydrogen gas. Indian scientists spot a galaxy 260 million light-years away that isn't giving birth to any new stars

To <a href="http://www.eurekalert.org/emb_releases/2016-04/eic-hcb042016.php">celebrate</a>, it snapped this gorgeous image of the 'Bubble Nebula,' which is between 7,000 and 11,000 light-years away.</p><p>The bubble formed <a href="http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap111011.html">because</a> the solar wind of a nearby star crashes into a massive molecular cloud full of dust and gas at over 62,000 miles per hour, causing it to glow. The bubble itself is about <a href="http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap111011.html">10 light-years wide</a>, and it's still growing.</p><p>Since it's so big, this image of the bubble is actually four photos Hubble took, stitched together.</p><p>The star that's shooting the solar wind at the bubble isn't located at the center (you can see it glowing in gold at the top), so astronomers are trying to figure out how the bubble is so perfectly spherical. It's one of the many mysteries that the telescope is helping scientists solve about the universe.</p><p><a href="http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/hubble/story/index.html">Hubble</a> wasn't expected to last this long, which is why some scientists call it the "<a href="http://scienceline.org/2014/12/the-little-telescope-that-could/">little telescope that could</a>." Twenty-six years is a long time to be in orbit around the Earth, dodging space junk and imaging the universe.</p><p>So it's particularly special to celebrate Hubble's birthday this year. The Hubble Telescope took this amazing photo of a 'Bubble Nebula' for its 26th birthday

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-james-webb-space-telescope-best-images-from-first-year-2022-12">James Webb Space Telescope continues to impress</a> with stunning images of the universe. </li><li>The latest image shows a doughnut-shaped structure of glowing gas known as the Ring Nebula.</li></ul><p>The stunning death throes of a star 2,600 light years away have been captured in unprecedented detail by<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-james-webb-telescope-image-spiral-barred-galaxy-2023-6"> NASA's James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).</a></p><p>The image shows a doughnut-like structure of glowing gas known as the Ring Nebula, which was formed about 4,000 years ago when a star violently <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/webb-photos-orion-nebula-show-features-hidden-to-hubble-2022-9">shed its outer layer of gas and dust</a>.</p><p>This matter spread out around the star, forming the granular purple matter seen in the image above. </p><p>The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/star-betelgeuse-shining-brighter-than-usual-will-one-day-explode-2023-5">dying star</a> that created the burst of matter is still visible at the center of the nebula. It is now extremely hot, over 100,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The interior of the ring is filled with hot gas, as shown in the image in yellow. </p><p>The image could help scientists learn more about the life cycle of distant stars.</p><p>You can see the image in more detail below: </p>    <p>The Ring Nebula is a<a href="https://news.westernu.ca/2023/08/jwst-ring-nebula/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> favorite among amateur astronomers</a>. Located 2,600 light years from Earth, its bubble-like shape can be seen using a backyard telescope pointing at the Lyra constellation. </p><p>"I first saw the Ring Nebula as a kid through just a small telescope," said astrophysicist Jan Cami of the University of Western Ontario, Canada, a member of the James Webb Space Telescope's (JWST) Ring Nebula Imaging Project, in a press release. </p><p>"I would never have thought that one day, I would be part of the team that would use the most powerful space telescope ever built, to look at this object," he said. </p><p>This latest Ring Nebula picture isn't just "aesthetically pleasing," said co-lead scientist Nick Cox of space observation firm ACRI-ST, France. </p><p>"By studying the Ring Nebula with JWST, we hope to gain a deeper understanding of the life cycles of stars and the elements they release into the cosmos," he said. </p><p>The telescope's advanced infrared capabilities allow scientists to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/james-webb-space-telescope-has-captured-dazzling-images-of-cosmos-2022-8">peer through gas like never before</a>. This new picture is no exception; it <a href="https://www.manchester.ac.uk/discover/news/manchester-astronomer-captures-stunning-images-of-the-ring-nebula-on-james-webb-space-telescope/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reveals the secrets of the star</a> at the center of the explosion. </p><p>"The high-resolution images not only showcase the intricate details of the nebula's expanding shell but also reveal the inner region around the central white dwarf in exquisite clarity," said Mike Barlow, University College London professor and co-lead scientist of the JWST Ring Nebula Imaging Project.</p><p>"We are witnessing the final chapters of a star's life, a preview of the sun's distant future so to speak, and JWST's observations have opened a new window into understanding these awe-inspiring cosmic events," he added. </p><p>This isn't the first time <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/webb-snaps-side-view-of-galaxy-behind-southern-ring-nebula-2022-7">JWST has shared breathtaking</a> images of a distant nebula. </p><p>As part of the space telescope's first series of images, scientists <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/images-show-james-webb-space-telescope-stronger-sharper-than-hubble-2022-7">released stunning new photos </a>of the Southern Ring Nebula, in July 2022. </p><div type="image" title="A collage of pictures taken by the James Webb Space telescope shows the NIRCam and MIRI cam pictures side by side. NASA's James Webb telescope captured the spectacular death throes of a star 2,600 light year away

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The James Webb Space Telescope can capture a more complete view of galaxies, stars, and planets.</li><li>The powerful telescope is 100 times stronger than its predecessor, Hubble, and uses infrared light.</li></ul><p>NASA's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-james-webb-space-telescope-first-year-in-space-2021-12">James Webb Space Telescope</a> has been delivering mind-blowing views of the cosmos since it began science operations in the summer of 2022.</p><p>Before Webb, astronomers had another workhorse cosmic observatory: the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/webb-infared-early-universe-hubble-ultraviolet-insights-breathtaking-images-2022-8">Hubble Space Telescope</a>. Both are space-based telescopes, but they differ in many ways. Hubble sees ultraviolet light, visible light, and a small slice of infrared, while Webb looks at the universe across the infrared spectrum.</p><p>Webb is 100 times stronger than Hubble, which allows astronomers to peer even further into space. As its first year of observations has proved, Webb is capable of taking the most striking shots yet of the universe.</p><h2>JWST showed some rings of Uranus that Hubble just can't grasp</h2><div type="image" title="A side by side comparison of recent pictures of Uranus shows the rings much brighter when taken with JWST than Hubble.  The pictures are annotated and read &quot;Hubble&quot; and &quot;JWST&quot;" height="999" width="1999" msid="100684343" hostid="261"></div><p>NASA published this <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uranus-images-shows-nasa-jwst-james-webb-outclasses-hubble-rings-2023-s?r=US&amp;IR=T">new picture</a> of Uranus — our neighborhood icy giant — taken by Webb in April 2023.</p><p>The new shot shows 11 of the planet's 13 rings clearly, including two rings that had only before been spotted by NASA's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-voyager-pictures-45-year-journey-neptune-uranus-saturn-earth-2022-6?r=US&amp;IR=T">Voyager 2</a> probe while it flew by the planet in 1986, and by a superpowered Earth-based observatory called the Keck.</p><p>By comparison, even the outer rings of Uranus appear faint on a picture taken by Hubble in 2022.</p><p>That being said, Webb still has some competition. Hubble previously spotted the two outer rings that are missing from Webb's latest photo of Uranus. </p><p>The Webb picture above, however, was snapped very quickly — in about 12 minutes. Scientists hope if they can spend more of the behemoth's time on Uranus, they could learn a lot about its rings and its mysterious atmosphere, NASA <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2023/nasa-s-webb-scores-another-ringed-world-with-new-image-of-uranus" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in a press release on April 6.</p><h2>Webb provided sharp views of Jupiter's auroras and storms that Hubble can't see</h2><div type="image" title="Hubble image of Jupiter (left) JWST image of Jupiter (right)" height="1000" width="2000" msid="95984249" hostid="261"></div><p>In August 2022, Webb <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jupiter-images-webb-sees-rings-moons-hubble-cant-2022-8">snapped images of Jupiter</a> — the largest planet in our solar system. When compared to Hubble's images of the gas giant, above on the left, Webb offers a sharper and crisper image and showcases new details of Jupiter's auroras and storm systems.</p><p>In Webb's image of Jupiter, above on the right, the planet's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jupiter-great-red-spot-depth-nasa-juno-2021-10">Great Red Spot</a> — an enormous storm that has been swirling for centuries — is so bright with reflected sunlight that it appears white.</p><p>Webb's infrared image also shows Jupiter's auroras lighting up both the planet's poles. Auroras are colorful displays of light that are not unique to Earth. Jupiter has the most powerful auroras in the solar system, according to <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/feature/jpl/jupiter-s-aurora-presents-a-powerful-mystery/" rel="">NASA</a>.</p><p>On both Earth and Jupiter, auroras occur when charged particles from the sun interact with the magnetic field — known as the magnetosphere — that surrounds a planet. Jupiter's magnetic field is about <a href="https://lasp.colorado.edu/outerplanets/giantplanets_magnetospheres.php#jupiter" rel="">20,000 times stronger</a> than Earth's.</p><h2>Webb revealed thread-like filaments in the Orion Nebula hidden to Hubble</h2><div type="image" title="Hubble image of the Orion Nebula, left. JWST image of the Orion Nebula, right." height="1440" width="2565" msid="95984251" hostid="261"></div><p>NASA released images of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/webb-photos-orion-nebula-show-features-hidden-to-hubble-2022-9">the Orion Nebula</a> — a massive star-forming region 1,350 light-years from Earth — that Webb took in September 2022. The nebula is the nearest stellar nursery to us.</p><p>Dense clouds of cosmic dust in the nebula obscure star-forming structures from instruments that rely on visible light, like in Hubble's image of the nebula, above to the left. By <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/james-webb-team-unveils-nasa-space-telescope-first-images-2022-7" rel="">gathering infrared light</a>, Webb is able to peer through those layers of dust, giving astronomers unprecedented views of the nebula's various components.</p><p>Astronomers believe nebulae are clouds dominated by vast, tangled, thread-like structures, called filaments, which feed material like gas to form and fuel stars. Webb's images reveal these gaseous threads in great detail.</p><h2><strong>Webb's infrared technology allows it to detect elements like methyl cation that Hubble cannot</strong></h2><div type="image" title="A side-by-side image of the Orion Nebula from the Hubble Telescope and James Webb Space Telescope," height="900" width="1200" msid="101677170" hostid="261" sizebytes="15296"></div><p>Webb's images of the Orion Nebula had more information to reveal. In June 2023, researchers reported that the powerful space telescope had detected one of the key building blocks for life, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/webb-space-telescope-found-molecular-building-block-life-orion-nebula-2023-6">methyl cation (CH3<sup>+</sup>), for the first time in space</a>.</p><p>Methyl cation can induce chemical reactions to form more-complex carbon molecules and are fundamental for organic chemistry and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/webb-telescope-captures-enceladus-water-plume-thousands-miles-long-2023-5">potential life</a>. Its existence in the universe was theoretical until Webb found it. The researchers speculate that UV radiation provided the energy source necessary for its formation. </p><p>"This clearly shows that ultraviolet radiation can completely change the chemistry of a protoplanetary disk," Olivier Berné of the French National Centre for Scientific Research in Toulouse, lead author of the study, <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2023/webb-makes-first-detection-of-crucial-carbon-molecule" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said in a statement</a>. "It might actually play a critical role in the early chemical stages of the origins of life." </p><p>Though Hubble <a href="https://esahubble.org/images/heic0917aw/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">previously studied</a> the Orion Nebula, it doesn't have the same light sensitivity as Webb. Chemical elements in stars and nebulae emit and absorb light at different wavelengths. The newer telescope analyzes infrared light from these objects to identify the elements. The epic stellar nursery is within the vast Eagle Nebula, a cloud of dust and gas 6,500 light-years away.</p><p>Hubble also imaged the famous nursery in 1995, above to the left. When comparing the two images next to one another, Webb's camera pierces through solid columns of cosmic dust, revealing hundreds of stars that Hubble couldn't see.</p><h2>Webb spied countless galaxies that Hubble missed</h2><div type="image" title="A side by side collage of the same area taken by the Hubble and the James Webb space telescopes." height="1500" width="2000" msid="95984255" hostid="261"></div><p>One of the first images that NASA shared from Webb was a "deep field" image — a long-exposure observation of a region of the sky, which allows the telescope to capture the light of extremely faint, distant objects. The image took less than a day to capture, according to <a href="https://twitter.com/NASAWebb/status/1546621080298835970" rel=" nofollow">NASA</a>.</p><p>When unveiling the image in July 2022, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasas-webb-telescope-snaps-first-full-color-image-2022-7">NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said</a> that if you held a grain of sand at arm's length, that would represent the speck of universe you see in this image.</p><p>"The deep field image fills me with wonder and hope," Lisa Kaltenegger, professor of astronomy at Cornell University and director of the Carl Sagan Institute, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/james-webb-hunt-for-distant-worlds-some-may-harbor-life-2022-7">previously told Insider</a>.</p><p>A side-by-side of Hubble's deep field next to Webb's reveals just how much sharper and stronger the new space observatory is.</p><h2>Webb revealed 2 stars inside this nebula whereas Hubble only saw one</h2><div type="image" title="side-by-side images of a bubbly nebula with arrows pointing to the stars at the center" height="1000" width="2000" msid="95984258" hostid="261"></div><p>This is the <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/image-feature/goddard/2022/nasa-s-webb-captures-dying-star-s-final-performance-in-fine-detail">Southern Ring Nebula</a>, where a dying star is slowly expelling the layers of its atmosphere in successive waves, creating ever-expanding bubbles of colorful gas. Scientists knew there were two stars at the nebula's center, but couldn't see them in Hubble's images.</p><p>The new Webb picture reveals the dying star, which glows red because it's surrounded by dust, right next to its white companion star.</p><h2>An iconic cluster of 5 galaxies is much brighter and clearer in Webb's eye</h2><div type="image" title="cluster of five galaxes stephans quintet imaged by hubble on the left and jwst on the right" height="1000" width="2000" msid="95984260" hostid="261"></div><p>Four of the galaxies in this image of <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/image-feature/goddard/2022/nasa-s-webb-sheds-light-on-galaxy-evolution-black-holes">Stephan's Quintet</a> are about 300,000 light-years away, locked in a cosmic dance as each galaxy's gravity influences the others.</p><p>The Webb image also reveals new galaxies far in the background, which weren't visible to Hubble.</p><h2>Where Hubble saw a faint dot, Webb resolved 2 distinct mystery objects</h2><div type="image" title="two faint dots one yellow one orange in space" height="362" width="482" msid="95984262" hostid="261"></div><p>Dan Coe, a researcher with the Space Telescope Science Institute, first discovered this object in deep space about 10 years ago, using Hubble.</p><p>"With Hubble, it was just this pale, red dot. We could tell it was really small, just a tiny galaxy in the first 400 million years of the universe. Now we look with Webb, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hubble-vs-webb-new-nasa-telescope-reveals-details-early-universe-2022-11">we're able to resolve TWO objects</a>," Coe said in a <a href="https://blogs.nasa.gov/webb/2022/10/26/webb-offers-never-before-seen-details-of-early-universe/" rel="">NASA release</a> in October 2022.</p><div type="image" title="gif compares hubble and jwst images of the same galaxy cluster highlighting new galaxies behind it" height="338" width="600" msid="95984263" hostid="261"></div><p>Both Hubble and Webb study the early universe through <a href="https://esahubble.org/wordbank/gravitational-lensing/#:~:text=Gravitational%20lensing%20occurs%20when%20a,accordingly%20called%20a%20gravitational%20lens.">gravitational lensing</a>. That's what happens when a cluster of distant galaxies is so massive that it warps space-time, bending the light from galaxies far in the distance behind it. That creates mirror images of those galaxies, reflected back at us.</p><p>So the imprint of the mystery objects appears in three spots in the images above. Breakouts of those three images of the system, on the right, show how much clearer Webb's images are. They clearly show two different objects.</p><p>"We're actively discussing whether these are two galaxies or two clumps of stars within a galaxy," Coe said in the release. "We don't know, but these are the questions that Webb is designed to help us answer."<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/webb-infared-early-universe-hubble-ultraviolet-insights-breathtaking-images-2022-8"></a></p><h2>Webb shows crashing galaxies in greater detail than Hubble</h2><div type="image" title="An animated gif shows picture from Hubble and James Webb space telescopes of NGC 3256" height="900" width="1200" msid="101677171" hostid="261" sizebytes="75784"></div><p>While Hubble's image of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jwst-image-shows-wreckage-of-two-galaxies-crashing-james-webb-2023-7">two colliding galaxies</a> is stunning, it doesn't capture all the chaos that you can see in Webb's clearer version. The two gas clouds crashed into each other about 500 million years ago. </p><p>Webb's powerful <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-james-webb-hidden-details-infrared-galaxies-2022-7">infrared cameras</a> picked up incredibly bright clouds made of dust and stars from the new galaxy, which is roughly 120 million light-years away. The relatively new stars "radiate enormously brightly in infrared wavelengths," ESA reported. In the Webb image, they appear bright orange and red.</p><p>Scientists hope Webb's images will help them understand what happens when two galaxies collide and provide insight into how supermassive black holes become billions of times more massive than the sun, <a href="https://www.space.com/webb-telescope-galactic-collision-image">per Space.com</a>.</p><p><em>This post has been updated with new information. 10 times NASA's James Webb Space Telescope spotted something Hubble missed

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The James Webb Space Telescope captured the rare sight of a "fingerprint" in space.</li><li>The "fingerprint" in the image consists of 17 concentric circles radiating from a point of contact.</li></ul><p>NASA's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-james-webb-space-telescope-jupiter-auroras-and-rings-2022-8">James Webb Space Telescope</a> has detected a new, wondrous sight — a cosmic fingerprint radiating out from a point of contact between two distant stars.</p><p>An image <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/feature/jpl/star-duo-forms-fingerprint-in-space-nasa-s-webb-finds">released by NASA on Tuesday</a> showed what appears to be concentric rings radiating out from a point of contact between a pair of gigantic stars called the Wolf-Rayet 140, located around 5,000 light-years from Earth. This pair consists of a Wolf-Rayet star ten times bigger than the sun, and a companion supergiant star that's 30 times bigger than the sun. </p><p>According to NASA's description of the photograph, the rings are produced whenever the two stars come close to each other in their orbit, which happens once every eight years. The stellar winds — or gas streams — from the stars are compressed, and turn into dust, creating rings.</p><p>NASA characterized the interaction between two stars and the wave-like rings emanating from their point of almost-contact as a "celestial dance." The agency added that the rings seen in this picture are akin to circles in a tree trunk, with each loop marking another eight-year cycle. </p><p>"We're looking at over a century of dust production from this system," said astronomer Ryan Lau, lead author of a study on the Wolf-Rayet 140 star system. "The image also illustrates just how sensitive this telescope is. Before, we were only able to see two dust rings, using ground-based telescopes. Now we see at least 17 of them."</p><p>Peter Tuthill, an astronomy professor at the University of Sydney and a co-author on the study, told <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/science/2022/oct/12/james-webb-space-telescope-cosmic-fingerprint-dust-rings-wolf-rayet-140">The Guardian</a> that the photo showed how Wolf-Rayet 140 "puffs out" a smoke ring every eight years, "like clockwork."</p><p>"Eight years later, as the binary returns in its orbit, another ring appears, the same as the one before, streaming out into space inside the bubble of the previous one, like a set of giant nested Russian dolls," Tuthill said. </p><p>The James Webb telescope has been beaming back photograph after photograph of never-before-seen space footage, including <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/images-james-webb-space-telescope-what-they-reveal-2022-9">images of a 13.5-billion-year-old galaxy,</a> the oldest part of space that humans have ever seen. The James Webb telescope is currently <a href="https://webb.nasa.gov/orbit.html">orbiting the sun</a>, around a million miles from Earth, aiming to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/webb-space-telescope-found-oldest-and-most-distant-known-galaxy-2022-7">observe light in distant galaxies</a>.</p><p>In September, the telescope <a href="https://www.insider.com/orion-nebula-photos-james-webb-telescope-2022-9">captured images of the Orion Nebula</a>, a star nursery around 1,350 light-years from Earth. The telescope's infrared cameras <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/webb-photos-orion-nebula-show-features-hidden-to-hubble-2022-9">managed to spot star-forming clouds and gas cocoons</a> that were not picked up by the Hubble telescope.</p><p>Also in September, the telescope snapped a clear image of Neptune's rings, providing the best view mankind has had of the planet since the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/engineers-turn-to-voyager-decades-old-documents-fix-a-glitch-2022-7">Voyager 2 spacecraft</a> flew past Neptune in 1989. </p>

The James Webb telescope captured a stunning image of the 'fingerprint' that forms when 2 stars come close to each other in orbit

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Many Gen Z job seekers are asking about work-life balance during interviews.</li><li>Hiring managers are beginning to reckon with new workplace expectations.</li></ul><p>Today's workforce is not like anything we've ever seen. Sure, it's multigenerational, but it's also all over the place — from offices to living rooms <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiktok-influencer-olivia-marcus-mallorca-spain-remote-work-2023-3">to beaches in Mallorca</a>. </p><p>Expectations around work-life balance have changed significantly in the past three years, forcing everyone to square these new ideas with the day-to-day necessities of getting our jobs done.</p><p>For managers from older generations who are now hiring workers, the questions from would-be employees about protecting their time away from work can be frustrating. </p><p>Each generation has entered the labor market when different forces were coloring their experience: Gen X started the job hunt after the 1987 stock-market crash. Many millennials waded into their employment searches as the dot-com bubble burst or during the Great Recession more than a decade ago. Gen Zers entered the workforce amid the fallout from COVID-19, which forced many of them to work from home.</p><p>The difficulty of the pandemic, in part, encouraged some members of Gen Z to prioritize life just as much as work, and to be clear about those expectations with potential employers. </p><p>There wasn't a big focus on work-life balance when many of today's managers started working more than a decade ago. In fact, the more hours you put in, the cooler you seemed. But now that that's changing, some managers are confused or even annoyed, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/work-life-balance-red-flags-for-gen-z-job-seekers-2023-3">some younger workers are expecting more</a>.</p><p>As two Insider colleagues — a Gen Zer and an older millennial — we decided to explore the work-life-balance question from the beginning of the job process: the interview. It's often thought of as a make-or-break moment, so we wanted to know the answer to two questions: Why do candidates believe it's necessary to ask about work-life balance before they start in a job? And does this question hurt their chances of landing the job? </p><p>The answers are nuanced: It depends on the industry (finance, law, and startups don't welcome the question), the experience of the managers, and the job posting. </p><h2><strong>Gen Zers need to know the industry before asking about work-life balance</strong></h2><p>Some industries invite questions of work-life balance, according to Gen Zers and hiring managers who spoke with Insider. Others, like investment banking, still require extensive hours in the office or on the computer.</p><p>As Gen Zers enter the workforce, they need to educate themselves on the expectations of their industries before inquiring about balance, hiring managers suggested.</p><p>"If you were to directly ask, 'Can you describe the work-life balance for analysts at your firm?' I think your application would be denied," Steven Sibley, a clinical assistant professor of finance at Indiana University's Kelley School of Business, said of investment-banking candidates.</p><p>He added that interviewers were "trying to get a sense of a candidate's work ethic" by asking questions like, "Are they the type of person who wants to go work 80 hours, 90 hours a week and learn as much as they possibly can in two years? Or are they the type who just wants to make as much money as possible for as little work as possible?" </p><p>From his experience, the work-life-balance question instantly puts an applicant in that latter box.</p><p>David Jacobowitz is the founder of a snack startup, Nebula Snacks. He's looking for his first hire and said someone looking for work-life balance wasn't the right fit. </p><p>"When I'm interviewing and looking for a candidate to take on, the expectation is that this is not a typical 9-to-5," Jacobowitz said, adding that startups might require long hours during a launch or travel to meet with teams in factories or with retailers.</p><p>While he's seen many promising Gen Z candidates for the role, many of them have raised questions about tending to their lives outside work, he said.</p><h2><strong>Hiring managers and companies need to prepare for this question </strong></h2><p>It's important that interviewers and interviewees know what to expect when these questions arise, Sheila Williams, the managing director of talent acquisition at Deloitte, said.</p><p>"We're seeing a greater shift to candidates wanting to align their personal values, goals, purpose with the organization," Williams said, adding that "work-life balance or work-life integration is one of those key areas that often does come up" in the interview — and often it's Gen Zers fearlessly asking the question early in the process.</p><p>Williams credits the pandemic with reminding many workers that life continues outside a 9-to-5. While these emerging expectations do include paid time off and ending the day at 5 p.m., what many job seekers are looking for is flexibility, she said. Even in an industry like consulting or tax services, that's possible.</p><p>"It shows up in how you staff your teams, how you allow people to manage commitments outside of work, during the workday, how you support mental health or family's mental health," Williams added. </p><p>Williams explains this breadth to interviewers so they can best relay the workplace experience to job seekers, she said. To prevent anyone at the company from being put off by the question, Williams and her team educate Deloitte employees on how to navigate the conversations. </p><p>"We do train our interviewers to make sure they're equipped to understand the types of questions they're going to receive," she said. "And we really stress, 'Here's what you share about Deloitte, but also be open about your own personal experiences.'"</p><h2><strong>Should we all get over it? </strong></h2><p>Mary Cooney, the founder of the professional-development platform Generation IQ, said it's time to move on from this stigma of work-life balance.</p><p>She said companies needed to start making this part of their spiel to encourage workers to take the offer.</p><p>"I am, frankly, pretty shocked that Gen Zs even have to ask this question," she said. "The whole concept should be in place by now."</p><p>Cooney said the movement for work-life balance, while it was never explicitly discussed, was started by Gen Xers — people born from the mid-1960s to about '80 — who wanted to spend more time with family and therefore decided they wouldn't work too late in the evenings or on weekends.</p><p>Today, even in industries like banking, which seem fixed on workweeks that are multiples of 40 hours, changes are being made to abide by new worker preferences.</p><p>"It's interesting because some banks seem to be adapting to Gen Z's preference for work from home and flexible hours," Sibley of the Kelley School of Business said.</p><p>Sibley said that some banks, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-gen-z-is-impacting-wall-street-work-culture-2021-12">like Goldman Sachs</a>, had the "Saturday rule," where junior bankers aren't allowed to work between 9 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Sunday.</p><p>It's not common, though — Wall Street is known for being <a href="https://www.npr.org/2021/05/07/993938573/absolute-meltdown-wall-streets-work-till-you-drop-culture-under-attack" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ultrademanding and unforgiving</a>.</p><p>But now Gen Zers are openly asking the questions, Cooney said. And those questions are bringing change. </p>

Meta is facing a reckoning it may not recover from

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table center"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>About 1,600 light years away, in the constellation Orion, an interstellar cloud of gas and dust called Messier 78 is hiding a stellar nursery of young and unborn stars.<p>As explained in a <a href="http://www.eso.org/public/news/eso1635/">press release</a>, new stars form inside the nebula out of "dust grains in pockets just barely warmer than their extremely cold surroundings," which are shrunken and heated up by gravity.</p><p>But the gleaming young stars escape telescopes that see in visible light, radio waves, or infrared light because the cosmic dust either blocks or absorbs their bluish light. A cosmic 'dustbuster' has revealed a breathtaking image of stars that were previously hidden from view

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Earlier in April, journalist and comedy writer Dan Lyons released <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/dan-lyons-disrupted-review-2016-4">"Disrupted: My Misadventure in the Start-Up Bubble"</a> - his long-awaited memoir of a year spent working for marketing startup HubSpot.<p><span>The short</span><span>&#xa0;version is that Lyons found his year-ish working at a Silicon Valley startup to be a weird, cult-like experience where he <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/equity-as-payment-is-revolutionary-2016-4">never got as rich as he hoped</a>. In an excerpt of the book that ran on <a href="http://fortune.com/disrupted-excerpt-hubspot-startup-dan-lyons/">Fortune</a>, Lyons called it "startup hell."</span></p><p><span>I can't speak to Lyons' specific experience at HubSpot. Some startups are probably like this.</span></p><p><span>But, I, too, worked at a startup, Nebula, for just over a year, and it wasn't like he describes at all.</span></p><p>I definitely didn't get rich from Nebula. With <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/crazy-things-people-do-to-survive-san-franciscos-housing-prices-2016-4">San Francisco rents</a> and the cost of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/san-francisco-has-a-brazen-plan-to-pay-for-public-transportation-2015-8">commuting on the region's crumbling infrastructure</a>, I was treading water, financially speaking.</p><p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/openstack-startup-nebula-goes-out-of-business-2015-4">Nebula itself went bust just over a year ago</a>, with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/oracle-hires-nebula-employees-2015-5">most of the talent jumping over to Oracle</a>.&#xa0;</p><p>But I wouldn't trade the experience for anything.&#xa0;I learned a ton from some of the smartest people I've ever met, got a tremendous amount of insight into the workings of business and startup life, and made valuable connections.</p><p>That doesn't sound like "startup hell" to me.</p><h2><span>Cloud evangelist</span></h2><p><span>Nebula's flagship product, the Nebula One cloud controller, was designed to make it easy for anybody to build a cloud computing environment, similar to&#xa0;the one Amazon Web Services uses. Just plug it into your server rack, turn it on, and boom, cloud. </span></p><p><span>That was the sales pitch, anyway. The reality was more complicated.</span></p><p><span>When I first joined Nebula in the fall of 2012, I was coming off a stint as a freelance reporter for an obscure tech blog. I had been around enough startups to know that I would&#xa0;<em>probably&#xa0;</em>not get rich from Nebula. But they offered me stock options as part of my compensation package, and I figured, hey, best case,&#xa0;I can pay off my student loans.&#xa0;</span></p><p><span>Really, though, the thing that attracted me to Nebula was its pedigree.&#xa0;</span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span>Cofounder and CEO Chris C. Kemp had most recently served as a CTO at NASA, and brought tons of talent from the space agency to start the company. And it had raised at least $35 million in funding,&#xa0;with legendary Silicon Valley investors&#xa0;like Sun Microsystems cofounders Scott McNealy and Andy Bechtolsheim.</span></p><p><span>Better yet, Kemp himself&#xa0;recruited me to the company&#xa0;- I interviewed him at a party, and he liked the ensuing story. If you ever want an ego boost, have a former NASA executive personally ask you to join his company. It works wonders.</span></p><p><span></span><span>Unlike&#xa0;Lyons' experience at HubSpot, Nebula was&#xa0;pretty sedate. It was lots of really smart people working long hours to solve tough problems.&#xa0;</span></p><h2><span>The best part</span></h2><p><span>The best part of the job was getting to hang out with and learn from all of those really smart people. As part of my cloud evangelism or whatever, it was my job to sit down and help them distill their thoughts down to a conference talk, or a blog post, or a contributed chapter of a book.</span></p><p><span>At the time, Nebula didn't have any kind of marketing organization, so it would be up to me to define my duties and role. I came up with&#xa0;the title "Cloud Evangelist"&#xa0;- yeah, <em>I know&#xa0;-&#xa0;</em>but really, I was what a larger company would call a "content marketer." </span></p><p><span>I wrote our blog, helped proofread and jazz up company presentations and speeches, and kept tabs on the competition. Truthfully, I didn't always have too much to do&#xa0;- when I joined, the Nebula One was still six months away from launching, which made me an evangelist with nothing to evangelize.</span></p><p><span>Still,&#xa0;I like to think I absorbed much wisdom by working with my colleagues. But if getting recruited by Kemp was an ego boost, then hanging out with those engineers brought me crashing down to earth. Still, like they say, "if you're the smartest person in the room, you're in the wrong room."&#xa0;</span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span>There were plenty of concessions to that elusive notion of "startup culture." The kitchen was always well-stocked with snacks, soda, and a truly heroic amount of top-shelf alcohol. Indeed, every Friday at 4pm was a designated in-office happy hour, which was&#xa0;code for "you can drink at your desk."</span></p><p><span>The dress code could be summed up as "don't be naked, especially if you're meeting a customer." One prospective hire&#xa0;showed up for his&#xa0;interview in flip-flops and shorts and I'm almost 100 percent certain that wasn't what sunk his application.&#xa0;</span></p><p><span>And we once had what a friend and former coworker referred to as our "obligatory ridiculous startup bonding experience," where the company chartered a trio of sailboats for a five-hour lunch excursion in the San Francisco Bay.&#xa0;</span></p><p><span>But it&#xa0;was still definitely an office. Same occasional pizza lunches, same weird office politics, same struggle for conference room space, same highs, same lows as most other places I've worked before and since.</span></p><h2>The worst part</h2><p><span> </span><span>By late 2013, the writing was largely on the wall for Nebula. Despite the hype, the Nebula One controller wasn't selling in any vast quantities, and it was causing some anguish within the company. It turned out to require more hands-on installation just to get started than anyone had planned. And at a starting price of $100,000, it wasn't flying off the shelves.</span></p><p><span>Not too long before I left, Kemp would take a new title of Chief Strategy Officer, with veteran tech executive Gordon Stitt taking over as CEO.&#xa0;</span></p><p><span>By this point I was increasingly eager to get back to my reporting career. Christmas Eve 2013 was officially my last day.</span></p><p><span></span><span></span><span>Ultimately, I chose not to exercise my stock options when I departed. I heard later that most departing employees didn't, either.&#xa0;</span><span>A year and change after that, Nebula went bust. If I had bought those shares, they would have been worthless today.&#xa0;</span></p><p><span></span><span>The reasons why Nebula failed are&#xa0;not easily summed up&#xa0;- the <a href="https://www.gsb.stanford.edu/faculty-research/case-studies/nebula-fall-company">Stanford School of Business literally wrote a case study on it</a>, and I can tell you firsthand that it's only scratching the surface. The short, brutal version is that we didn't come up with something people actually needed.</span></p><p>All of that said, it was an excellent learning experience, even if nobody got rich. And most of my former coworkers landed on their feet at Oracle, Netflix, or elsewhere. Kemp himself is working on a new startup, I hear.</p><p>So&#xa0;while some startups definitely do sound like hell, like Lyons experienced,&#xa0;it's certainly not all weird cult initiations and horrors.
