Tensions in Middle-East are rapidly inching closer to their zenith, with Iran firing about 200 ballistic missiles at Israel late yesterday night. Mounting an SME’s IPO is comparatively less stringent than their mainboard counterparts, as far as regulations are concerned since their DRHPs (draft red herring prospectus) are not filed with SEBI. So, wouldn’t a lenient treatment make them inherently riskier? Another SME, Maxposure, whose IPO was out in January 2024, had earned its investors listing gains worth 317.40%! Apparently, higher risks also mean higher returns, and also super high investment. Most SME IPOs need a minimum investment of Rs 1,00,000 or more, as opposed to mainboard IPOs, where you can buy one lot of shares for anywhere between Rs 14,000-15,000. Even the minimum trading lot size for SME shares is about 10,000. In short, you’d have to potentially empty your pockets to invest in an SME IPO. And still, there’s no guarantee that the listing will fill your wallets. For all you know, your pockets before and after the IPO is listed might stay the same - EMPTY! There's also the question of whether or not these SMEs are able to maintain their listing day mojo, or do they just fizzle out thereafter? Data from Prime Database highlights more instances of the latter. As of August 2024, about 166 SME IPOs had made it to the exchanges. Around 72 of them, or close to 50%, could not sustain their momentum going ahead, and were trading below their listing day prices. Consider this. The post listing gains of Medicamen Organics, whose IPO came out in June 2024, earned its investors massive listing gains of over 300%, by listing at Rs 137.85, significantly higher than its price issue price, which was set between Rs 32-34. But as of October 1, 2024, the stock was trading at Rs 64.2. Talk about falls. Additionally, risks of pump-and-dump, and illiquidity, among others makes SME IPOs dangerous See, you're largely venturing into unknown, pitch-dark territories, without much light to guide you. For starters, SME IPOs face less scrutiny from market watchdog SEBI. This also means they are able to list quickly, just 3-4 months. On the other hand, mainboard IPOs can take upto a year before they are cleared for listing. Also, there is far less information and disclosures available about their financials, fundamentals and performance to investors for making an informed decision, as compared to mainboard stocks. Then there’s the issue of illiquidity. Once purchased, you might find it hard to sell off your SME stocks, since they are not traded as frequently in the market, which means lower liquidity. Trivesh D, COO, Tradejini explains that liquidity is a major concern for such stocks. “These stocks typically have a smaller free float, and are traded in lots, which can lead to volatility and sharp price swings. This means it can be challenging for investors to buy or sell shares without significantly impacting prices. Additionally, speculative trading practices, like 'pump-and-dump' schemes, can inflate stock prices, leaving retail investors vulnerable to sudden drops”. Recently, SME IPOs have gained notoriety for price manipulation via showing fictitious sales and revenue in their books of accounts, selling of promoter holdings at inflated prices, and being the facade for many infamous pump and dump schemes. This is where select people create frenzy, or mass euphoria over a particular stock or company, causing its prices to soar, and then dumping them, or selling their shares at this massive price to make a killing! Infact, it's not just the promoters, but also the investment banks floating these IPOs. At present, SEBI is investigating around 6 investment banks which have allegedly charged SMEs a staggering 15% of funds raised via IPOs as fee, as opposed to the standard 1-3%. In March 2024, SEBI chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch had also highlighted witnessing signs of manipulation in the SME space. “We do see signs of manipulation in the SME segment. We are able to see certain patterns.” Buch had observed back then. That's why it is better to look for companies which are raising capital for expansion purposes. This is a sign of healthy business growth prospects and improving fundamentals. So, this Independence Day, consider gifting yourself (and your friends and loved ones) these five presents that promise you financial freedom. <h2>Start SIP-ing in Mutual Funds, stocks</h2>The British ruled India for almost 200 years, starting from the battle of Plassey in 1757, to when India finally ousted the British Raj in 1947. Nearly 200 years of tireless persistence, struggle and revolution was what it took to achieve freedom. Keep that in mind when you feel constantly investing for 10-15 years is “way too long!”. Consider this. Yumna started investing Rs 15,000 every month, five years ago. Assuming 12% p.a. in return, she has already amassed over Rs 12,00,000, out of which her investments are worth Rs 9,00,000, while her returns come to Rs 3,37,295. Plus, having term insurance can also help you save on taxes (an annual premium paid of up to Rs 25,000 for those aged less than 60 is tax-free under old tax regime), apart from saving you during medical emergencies. Says Sabyasachi Sarkar, Appointed Actuary, Go Digit Life Insurance, “a life insurance plan is a tool that provides a safety net for your family in case of unexpected events and for your need of savings or pension. Ideally one should take a term life cover that is at least 10-15 times your annual income. Moreover, adding riders like death benefits or disability coverage to your policy can offer protection and advantages beyond the basic coverage. Moreover, when picking a life insurance company, consider factors like the claim settlement ratio, returns etc”. Once you’ve insured your life, it's time to safeguard your health as well, with a solid health insurance policy. As Vivek Chaturvedi, CMO and Head of Direct Sales at Go Digit General Insurance notes, “Ensure the plan that you are picking does not come with any cap on the choice of room or ICU as this may impact your overall hospitalization bill. Second, make sure your policy provides a sum insured backup or reinstatement benefit.” Also, check for the pre- and post-hospitalization benefits in your health coverage. Ensure that expenses like diagnostic tests, doctor’s fees, medical check-ups, etc. that you might have to incur before you get hospitalized or after you are discharged are covered. A good plan should provide at least 60/90 days of pre- and post-hospitalization coverage. And lastly, check the coverage for organ donor expenses. While it is a low-probability event, any organ transplant is an expensive affair. This ensures such costs are covered by the insurer. <h2>Save for a rainy day</h2>“It can’t happen to us until it does”. When you are flooded with a daily deluge of news about accidents, deaths, fires, train wrecks and more, it’s easy to disassociate and think “Oh, this won’t happen to me”. But when emergencies arrive at your doorstep, they don't knock but rather break the door down. As such, it's best to be financially prepared for any contingencies, and the best way to do so is to have an <keyword id="20747810" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="emergency-fund" source="keywords">emergency fund</keyword> handy. And in the short run, it can be incredibly satisfying as well. The <keyword id="20376051" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="budget-airline" source="keywords">budget airline</keyword> is facing significant hurdles, including financial troubles, legal issues, and grounded aircraft, and is in urgent need of capital to meet its obligations. A source told PTI that Singh may sell as much as 15 percent of his stake, depending on market conditions. Another source told the news aggregator that Singh, who serves as both Chairman and Managing Director, will likely sell around 10 percent of his shares, though the amount could increase if necessary. SpiceJet is currently in talks with investors, both in India and abroad, for a Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP), with commitments already made for up to Rs 2,000 crore. These funds are expected to help the airline cover operational expenses and address its various liabilities. While no official statement has been made by SpiceJet, insiders expect the funding round to be wrapped up by the end of September. As of June 2024, Ajay Singh and the promoter group held just over 47% of the airline, according to data from the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). SpiceJet, which once had a fleet of 74 aircraft in 2019, now operates only around 20 planes. In a recent investor presentation, the airline announced plans to raise Rs 3,200 crore through QIP, warrants, and capital infusion by Singh. This cash will be used to bring grounded planes back into service, settle liabilities, acquire new aircraft, and cover other general expenses. The airline aims to secure Rs 2,500 crore through QIP and an additional Rs 736 crore from previously issued warrants and funds infused by Singh, as detailed in the presentation. Earlier this year, in January, SpiceJet raised Rs 1,060 crore through preferential issues, falling short of its initial goal of Rs 2,250 crore set in December 2023.

But how many Indians – even at senior levels – ever come close to an annual income of ₹50 lakh? That’s what Jigna Alpesh Shah thought before she enrolled as a mutual fund distributor back in 2006. Today she manages assets of more than ₹100 crore in Anand, better known as the milk capital of India. She is a housewife between 6 am and 10 am and a wealth manager after that. Her vocation allows her to wear whichever hat she chooses to wear during the course of the day – which can be that of a mother, housewife or career woman. As the equity cult travels deeper into India, many women like Jigna have found their calling as advisors and distributors of financial products. Like the services industry, <keyword id="155162" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mutual-fund-distributors" source="Orion">mutual fund distributors</keyword> like NJ Wealth have also learned that the failure rate of women is very low compared to men as they are persistent and patient. In addition, they don’t easily indulge in misselling just to meet targets. As distributors of financial products, women can choose their workdays rather than adhere to a 9 am to 6 pm grind. Importantly, distribution is a lucrative vocation as a high performing distributor can easily earn trail income of ₹60 lakh p.a. This is big because merely 3.2 mn Indians are above the ₹5 lakh income bracket and they collectively account for 76% of income tax receipts of the government. In a country where the average annual income of a senior professional in India ranges between ₹18-25 lakh and a senior resident doctor’s annual income is between ₹50 and ₹60 lakh, an eight figure salary is surely a pipe dream for most. But if you are ambitious, as a mutual fund distributor you can easily earn a trail income of ₹50 lakh or more, provided you are willing to work hard for the first five years. It is perhaps for these compelling reasons that many more women are joining the equity cult, not just as investors but as advisors. Explains Misbah Baxamusa,CEO of NJ Wealth, “We at NJ Wealth found that women need flexibility in their careers and it is hard for them to hold regular jobs. Being a mutual fund distributor can give them the flexibility they need to get started and in addition to that there is minimal investment needed. We believe that the concept of saving and commitment comes naturally to them. Compared to their male counterparts, women don’t quit easily, once they enroll with us. They stick through the process and build up the business. We have several women today who are managing AUMs of over ₹100 crore.” Today, women account for 15-20% of NJ Wealth’s total distributors. NJ Wealth is focused on enrolling more women as it is a win win for both sides. Compared to industry ratio, it has a much higher ratio of <keyword id="19662661" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="women-distributors" source="Orion">women distributors</keyword> but Baxamusa feels that a lot more can join the gravy train. <div type="image" title="Jigna Shah" msid="105950515" hostid="261"></div> Jigna Shah was a housewife when she moved to Anand in 2002 with her husband. Though she is a BSc graduate, she started dabbling in financial products as an insurance agent. She enrolled with NJ in 2006 and now manages an AUM of ₹103 crore and is the highest AUM holder at NJ Wealth’s Anand branch (Gujarat). She says: “I have seen the journey of mutual fund investments and how it gained momentum after 2008-09. It took me over 10 years to take my AUM to ₹100 crore, but now I am looking forward to doubling my AUM in the next five years.” What has also helped her growth is the better understanding now that Indians have on building wealth through investments in financial assets unlike the past. Goal based investing has really caught on, she says. <div type="image" title="dipti" msid="105607260" hostid="261"></div> Sourcing customers was a little harder ten years ago, but with social media gaining traction that has also become easy. Sixty-nine year old Dipti Pourana has been distributing financial products for years now, but she says her business hit the fast track after she enrolled with NJ Wealth as her customers refused to invert unless she was their distributor. The technology platform of NJ is immensely user-friendly that makes the lives of distributors very easy. Pourana became the breadwinner after her husband died. Today she manages an AUM of over ₹200 crore. She says: “Client acquisition has also changed over the years. At the beginning of your career as a mutual fund distributor, life can be hard but over the years, the magic of trail commission will kick in.” <div type="image" title="aranpreet" msid="105717868" hostid="261"></div> The story of Aranpreet Kaur is no different from Pourana. Kaur lost her husband during Covid and since then she has been in the driving seat of their wealth advisory business in Chandigarh. She along with her husband started their investment and financial services company in 2015. Kaur thinks that women make very good financial planners and advisors as they are adept at managing homes. She says: “The reason why women can be more successful in this business is because they understand the problem and suggest solutions to clients, unlike men who are more focused on selling.” Kaur’s pet project is to provide financial literacy to young students, who she still teaches in college. She has taken her college lecturer’s role to the next level by conducting classes on investments and savings. She says: “I am a lecturer at SD College but I am very passionate about investing. While I still teach, I also conduct seminars and programmes on investing with students because it is important. I even help my staff at home and office to invest in mutual funds so that they can save for their children’s education.” NJ Wealth is not only making their investors rich by deploying their hard earned money into financial instruments but are also making their distributors wealthy.
