It supports innovation and job creation," said Victoria Espinel, president and CEO of BSA.<br /><br />The Global Data Alliance (GDA) — which also includes non-BSA members like Panasonic, Visa, and Mastercard — advocates that movement of information around the world is essential for businesses to build themselves.<br /><br /><strong>They argue that data mobility will help the economy<br /></strong>From designing and creating new products and services to reaching new customers, GDA believes that non-sensitive data should be allowed to stay mobile. Restricting its movement will have <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india-personal-data-protection-bill-global-ceo-concerns/articleshow/68389336.cms">far-reaching effects for every sector.</a> <br /><br />In farming, for example, most crop loss occurs due to the unpredictability of the weather. Predictive weather models and other precision agricultural techniques can help reduce risk by collecting data from thousands of sensors across countries and regions. <br /><br />For manufacturing too, IoT sensors with predictive analytics software can help reduce unplanned maintenance and factory downtime. However, in order to be efficient, it needs to perform real-time analysis using indicators from factories in different regions around the globe. <br /><br />The health sector bears one of the more significant impacts. Using data from different countries, doctors can use patterns to identify how a disease may be moving or infecting people. Cross-referencing queries and insights can also better doctors deliver better diagnoses and cost-effective medical aid.<br /><br /><strong>Why the government thinks data should stay in India<br /></strong>While it’s understandable that global companies feel that mobility is key to optimise their business flow, what they don’t point out is how it’s also a cost-saving mechanism. Every country has its own comparative advantage that companies leverage.<br /><br />The other concern is the amount of data that’s currently changing hands. More people are using the internet with first-time users expected to join the bandwagon as network penetration increases.<br /><br />Advocates of data localisation have called data akin to ‘oil’ that is currently being given away for free. Data is the cornerstone of a lot of processes like predictive, machine learning (ML), and <keyword id="107950" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="artificial-intelligence">artificial intelligence</keyword> (AI) among others.<br /><br />While restricting the flow of data across orders sounds like it may hamper Big Data, the bigger issue is that without servers in India, the Indian government is left with little recourse when it comes to addressing data breaches and privacy violations that happen on global servers. We urge the government to undertake further consultation before they introduce it into the parliament,” Venkatesh Krishnamoorthy, the Country Manager for <keyword id="1681687" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSA-India">BSA India</keyword> told Business Insider India.<br /><br />BSA, the software alliance that includes companies like Microsoft, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Intel, Adobe, Akamai, Oracle, IBM and Apple, feel that since the policy that will now be tabled is considerably different from what was originally presented for discussion — another round of inputs would help the companies as well as the Indian government. <br /><br /><strong>Rushing to parliament<br /></strong><br />Ravi Shankar Prasad, India’s IT and telecom minister, told the press that taking the Personal Data Protection Bill to parliament will be one of his top priorities during the first 100 days of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s second term. <br /><br />“In IT, we will try to quickly get the data protection bill to the Parliament and also, notifying the intermediary guidelines,” he said.<br /><br />Before India started out on its journey to address data privacy concerns, the debate had already been ongoing in the US for nearly 20 years and in the EU for over 10 years.<br /><br />The original draft of the Personal Data Protection Bill that was shared in 2018 draws its inspiration from the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) as well as other legislations around the world. <br /><br />And, given that GDPR has just completed its first year of implementation, Krishnamoorthy feels that there’s a lot that India can learn from the EU’s experience, “It would be beneficial for the government given that GDPR has gone through its anniversary and there were learnings from that. And generally, also there’s been a lot of activity as well, like the G20 Summit in Japan. ”<br /><br />It’s not just that India needs to look at the experience of other countries. The new draft that will be tabled at parliament is considerably different from what was originally presented. “The next version be more robust than what it is currently,” Krishnamoorthy explains.<br /><br />He adds, “It’s a step in the right direction because the time of privacy legislation has come. It’s been a pretty thorough effort trying to come with a comprehensive data protection legislation on the government’s part.”<br /><br />There were <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/groups-of-foreign-companies-are-lobbying-against-indias-personal-data-protection-bill/articleshow/66070718.cms">many concerns</a> in the first bill with respect to the definitions of data and the mandate of data localisation. Apple, Amazon, and Microsoft want one more shot at convincing India before data protection bill reaches Parliament

As this <a href="https://www.statista.com/infografik/14165/unlicensed-software-per-world-region/">chart from Statista</a> shows, that number is going down with every passing year, but the dollar amount is still significant. </p><p>In addition to depriving software vendors of the tens of billions of dollars that could be circulating through the market, unlicensed software can open companies and individual users up to malware, which in itself is expensive to resolve. The same BSA study said that a malware attack can cost a company an average of $2.4 million and about 50 days to resolve. A third of software downloaded on the world's PCs is unlicensed, and it's costing the industry $46 billion

Scott Applewhite</span></p><p class="caption">Retired Senator Harry Reid (D-Nev.)</p></div><p></p></div></div>Carl Bass, CEO of software company Autodesk with a market cap of $18 billion describes himself as "batsh*t about President Trump" and he's felt that way "for a year," throughout the campaign, he <a href="https://pando.com/2017/02/06/autodesk-ceo-carl-bass-ive-been-batshit-about-trump-year-hes-acting-somewhere-between-dictator-and-small-business-owner/245af5a7f062b0f5f4427a3f338e1b601020ff58/">told Pando Daily's Sarah Lacy.</a></p><p>Like many other folks in the U.S. who are not fans of the new president, Bass has got a long list of concerns.</p><p>They range from some of Trump's personality traits ("This idea that you can have alternative facts, and objective reality doesn't matter is really disturbing," Bass says.") to the people Trump has advising him, like Steve Bannon. ("Imagine we had a left-wing President, and he decided to appoint Arianna Huffington as the person to preside over the National Security Council," he describes.)</p><p>Bass is not on Trump's economic advisory committee, but unlike most Americans, he does have a long history of interacting with Washington politicians. He's been the spokesperson for software lobbying groups. (Autodesk is a member of the BSA Software Alliance, for instance.)</p><p>And, he says, those experiences were also crazy-making.</p><p>"We would go to Washington and lobby about something like anti-piracy being part of the trade agreement with China. My personal experience was that it was the most frustrating days of my job, because you felt like stuff never got done. During the conversation the Congressman leaned back, put his boots on the table and asked Bass "Son, so you are telling me that when your money is overseas, it's not in US banks?"</p><p>But the funniest story he told was a meeting with former US Senator Harry Reid, "who sat there with CEOs and read us a bunch of pages out of a Dr. Seuss book," he describes. "We are all looking at each other like, "I must be high, or I'd like to be high."</p><p>Bass couldn't really explain point of that meeting, "Something in there was some kind of parable or lesson, but we were too literal and stupid to understand what he was talking about. Google received approval of 824 new and extended visas for its offices in Mountain View. Google’s Sundar Pichai, Facebook and Amazon — here’s how American companies reacted to Donald Trump’s H1-B visa freeze

They say it would allow government agencies to spy on citizens more easily.<p>So when the software industry's lobby group, the Business Software Alliance, <a href="http://www.bsa.org/~/media/Files/Policy/data/09142015CongLeadershipDataAgendaLetter.pdf">wrote an open letter</a>&#xa0;to Congress asking it to&#xa0;pass a bunch of cyber bills, one privacy watchdog group got angry.</p><p>One of the bills the BSA supports is&#xa0;the similarly named "Cyber Threat Sharing Act of 2015 (<a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/114th-congress/senate-bill/456?q=%7B%22search%22%3A%5B%22Cyber+Threat+Information+Sharing+Act+2015%22%5D%7D&amp;resultIndex=1">S.456</a>)."</p><p>The BSA's letter&#xa0;was&#xa0;signed by the lawyers of some of its biggest members including Salesforce, IBM, Microsoft, Adobe, Oracle, Symantec.</p><p>Privacy group Fight for the Future read the letter and fired up an internet campaign called "<a href="https://www.youbetrayedus.org/">YouBetrayedUs.org</a>" that sent 23,000 emails to the software companies involved, it said. It was also trying to get developers to boycott Salesforce's cloud, Heroku.</p><p>This group believed that CTSA was another bill just like&#xa0;CISA that would "give corporations total legal immunity when they share private user data with the government and with each other," <a href="https://www.youbetrayedus.org/">it warned.</a></p><p>The uproar provoked a response from Salesforce's CEO Marc Benioff, who took to Twitter to disavow CISA.</p><p>Benioff <a href="https://twitter.com/Benioff/status/647431337075474433">tweeted</a>, "The letter clearly was a mistake and doesn't imply CISA support. We need to clarify. I'm against it.</p>- Marc Benioff  (@Benioff) <a href="https://twitter.com/mims/statuses/647431337075474433">September 25, 2015</a></blockquote><script async="" src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></div></p><p class="embed-spacer">&#xa0;</p><p>Benioff's tweets dissing CISA spread&#xa0;and soon, the&#xa0;BSA itself issued a statement saying it doesn't like&#xa0;CISA, either, nor two similar bills.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">For clarity, <strong>BSA does not support any of the three current bills pending before Congress</strong>, including the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act (CISA), the Protecting Cyber Networks Act (PCNA), and the National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center (NCCIC) Act," the <a href="http://www.bsa.org/policy/security">new letter said.</a></p><p>BSA also insisted that CTSA, the bill that it does support, was an entirely different beast,&#xa0;involving&#xa0;"voluntary information sharing."&#xa0;</p><p>With the largest software lobbying group and powerful industry CEO Marc Benioff now publicly opposing CISA, it will much harder, and likely impossible,&#xa0;for Congress to pass CISA.&#xa0;</p><p>As for CTSA? We'll see.</p><p>But if it CTSA proves to be problematic, Benioff has no problem lobbying&#xa0;against laws he thinks are unjust.
