<ul class="summary-list"><li>Rick Rodriguez and his friends went on a boat journey from the Galapagos to French Polynesia.</li><li>About two weeks into the trip, the group found themselves stranded for 10 hours in the middle of the Pacific. </li></ul><p>One of the first things Rick Rodriguez did after his boat started to sink was text his friend. "Tommy this isn't a joke," <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/travel/2023/03/20/sailboat-hits-whale-pacific-rescue/?utm_campaign=wp_main&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=facebook">he wrote</a>. "We hit a whale and the ship went down."</p><p>He really wasn't joking.</p><p>Rodriguez and three of his friends were on a three week sailing journey. They had started near the Galapagos Islands and were on their way to French Polynesia. Just shy of two weeks into their journey, however, they found themselves in a lifeboat, floating in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/travel/2023/03/20/sailboat-hits-whale-pacific-rescue/?utm_campaign=wp_main&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=facebook">The Washington Post</a> reported.</p><p>They drifted for 10 hours before a civilian ship finally rescued them, <a href="https://www.sailworldcruising.com/news/259821/The-rescue-of-Raindancer-crew-%E2%80%93-non-World-ARC-boat">Sail World Cruising,</a> an online sailing publication, reported.</p><p>Rodriguez told The Post that him and his friends were eating pizza at about 1:30 p.m. on March 13 when they heard a loud bang. Some 15 minutes later, the boat sank. The friends quickly collected essential supplies like water, food, and documents, and then scrambled into the lifeboat, according to Sail World Cruising. </p><p>Rodriguez, who fortunately still had some charge left on a portable wifi device, was able to reach out for help. "Tell as many boats as you can," he told his friend, who was also a sailor. "Battery is dangerously low."</p><p dir="null">Alana Litz, one of the friends on the sailboat, told the Post she was the first to see what she now believes was a Bryde's whale that was at least 44-feet long — the length of the boat. Bryde's are <a href="https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/species/brydes-whale">a species of great whale,</a> similar to blue or humpback whales. </p><p dir="null">"I saw a massive whale off the port aft side with its side fin up in the air," Litz told the Post.</p><p dir="null">Rodriguez said he saw it bleeding as it went back into the water.</p><p dir="null">Fortunately for the stranded crew, there were about two dozen ships sailing in the same direction — part of a yacht race known as World ARC, according to Sail World Cruising. </p><p dir="null">"There was never really much fear that we were in danger," Rodriguez told The Post. "Everything was in control as much as it could be for a boat sinking."</p><p dir="null">It's not uncommon for boats and whales to collide, especially with the rise in the amount of cargo and cruise boat traffic. The Los Angeles Times <a href="https://www.latimes.com/environment/story/2021-08-05/how-cargo-cruise-ships-contribute-to-whale-deaths">reported</a> that ship strikes have actually been a danger to whales in the Pacific. </p><p dir="null">"Anywhere you have major shipping routes and whales in the same place, you are going to see collisions," Russell Leaper, an expert with the International Whaling Commission told the Times. "Unfortunately, that's the situation in many places."</p><p dir="null">The <a href="https://maritime-executive.com/article/sailboat-attacked-and-disabled-by-orcas-in-strait-of-gibraltar">Maritime Executive</a>, a magazine covering maritime issues, reported last week that a sailboat had to be towed to safety in the Strait of Gibraltar after three orcas knocked into it. The magazine reported that orcas have been slamming into boats in the area for years. </p><p dir="null">A spokeswoman for the International Whaling Commission told the Post that since 2007, there have been 1,200 reports of boats and whales colliding. But according to the US Coast Guard it's rare for collisions to cause significant damage. </p>

A 'massive' whale destroyed a sailboat in the middle of the Pacific, leaving 4 friends stranded for 10 hours

Joggers at <keyword id="6394733" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Juhu-beach">Juhu beach</keyword> were left amazed when they spotted a dead giant <keyword id="6358797" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Whale">whale</keyword> washed up on the suburban shores late on Thursday night.<br />
 <br /> As police and forest officials were apprised of the situation, on examination they identified the mammal as <keyword id="3224291" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="brydes-whale">Bryde's Whale</keyword> measuring around close to 35-40 feet and weighing around three to four tones approximately.<br />

Looking at the decay, the forest officials expect the whale to have died at least two to three days back. They cited sound pollution under water, pollution  from industries, plastic consumption or disease as the possible reasons for its death since there were no external injuries found on the body.<br />

Initial examination also revealed internal decomposition of the organs had already started, and the outer skin of the whale, around the tail and stomach had started to peel off. The officials are now planning to deflate the carcass on the beach itself for fear of it exploding, and cranes have been called to remove the remains.<br />

This is the second biggest whale to have beached along the Maharashtra coast. Last year, a blue whale washed up at Alibaugh and died after a 10-hour struggle to push her back into the sea.<br />

Moreover, at least 80 whales were spotted in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, on 12 January this year. While 40 were saved, 45 others lost their lives.<br />

The images were first published in Yomiuri Shimbun, which is one of Japan's five national newspapers.</p><p>"I've lived for more than 80 years, but it's my first time [seeing a whale]," one bystander who saw the tanker said, <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10020599/Moment-Japanese-tanker-docks-harbour-32-foot-dead-whale-stuck-bow.html?ito=social-twitter_mailonline">according to the Daily Mail.</a></p><p>The ship's crew were reportedly unaware they had been dragging the whale with them as they sailed through the Pacific, according to Yomiuri Shimbun.</p><div type="image" title="Bryde whale marooned on the bow of a ship in Japan" height="896" width="1194" msid="86889636" hostid="261"></div><p>A spokesperson from the Mizushima Coast Guard Department said this was the first time they had witnessed anything like this. They would be investigating to see how such an incident can be prevented in the future.</p><p>The name of the ship was obscured in the photos distributed by the Coast Guard.</p><div type="image" title="A healthy Bryde whale swimming at the Mirs Bay in Shenzhen, China" height="1941" width="2588" msid="86889638" hostid="261"></div><p>Ship strikes are known to be one of the leading causes of death for endangered and vulnerable whale populations, <a href="https://wwf.panda.org/discover/knowledge_hub/endangered_species/cetaceans/threats/whaling/">according to World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).</a></p><p>Michael Fishbach, executive director and co-founder of the <a href="https://www.greatwhaleconservancy.org/">Great Whale Conservancy, an environmental NGO</a> based in North Carolina, told Insider that a dozen whales are killed by a ship for each one that is recorded.</p><p>"Because of the negative buoyancy of the whales, they just sink straight to the bottom after they die, except on rare occasions like this one, where the whales are struck in the center of their body, and you have a situation as you see in the above image."</p><p>Fishbach told Insider: "There's no question that the number of whales killed by ships each year is in the 1000s each year."</p><p>When discussing what needs to change to save these whales, Fishbach said a body designated by the industry that can approach the shipping companies with a "calm, combined effort" to put forward measures and changes "to put a stop to this."</p><p>The whale specialist added that approximately 60% of the ships involved in whale strikes are container vessels.                         </p>

<p>A 49-foot Bryde's whale nearly swallowed diver Rainer Schimpf as it was coming up to feed on a massive glob of sardines, known as a bait ball.</p>
<p>We first saw the story posted by Jesus Diaz at <a href="http://sploid.gizmodo.com/scuba-diver-almost-gets-swallowed-by-49-foot-whale-1579204771" target="_blank">Gizmodo</a>. </p>
<p>Underwater footage of the dramatic close encounter was captured by Schimpf while he was filming the annual <a href="http://www.sardinerun.com/" target="_blank">sardine run</a> - when millions of sardines travel north along the South African coastline between the months of May and July.</p>
<p>The biggest fish migration in the world creates a feeding frenzy as predators that include birds, sharks, fish, dolphins, and whales comes to snack on the tiny silvery fish.</p>
<p>"I saw him [the whale] coming up and I thought that's it for me," Schimpf was quoted as saying by <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2633971/Divers-close-escape-gets-40-tonne-whale-lunch.html?ITO=1490&amp;ns_mchannel=rss&amp;ns_campaign=1490" target="_blank">The Daily Mail</a>. "The diameter of his mouth was big enough to swallow a car - he would have barely felt me going in."</p>

<p>"At the last moment he must have realized I was there and he diverted away from me and actually missed most of the bait ball," Schimpf said.</p>
<p><a href="https://uk.screen.yahoo.com/diver-nearly-swallowed-whale-130500084.html" target="_blank">According to Barcroft TV</a>, Schimpf was sent "flying as the whale breached." The diver's wife took a photograph as the whale was coming out the water with her husband just a few feet away, according to the Mail.</p>
<p>Bryde's whales weigh around 90,000 pounds and can consume up to 1,450 pounds of food per day, according <a href="http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/pr/species/mammals/cetaceans/brydeswhale.htm" target="_blank">NOAA</a>. The whales typically feed on krill, crustaceans, and small fish.</p>

A Whale Comes Within Feet Of Swallowing A Cameraman

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The London Natural History Museum announced the 2022 winners of its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/most-popular-wildlife-photos-of-the-year-2020-11">Wildlife Photographer of the Year contest</a>.</li><li>The 20 winners were selected from more than 38,000 entries. </li></ul><p>As a ball of swarming cactus bees rolled across the hot Texas sand, Karine Aigner trained her camera on the spectacle.</p><p>The cactus bees, like most other bees, are endangered by habitat loss, pesticides, and the changing climate. But that didn't stop this cluster of buzzing insects from trying to multiply. All but one of the bees in that ball were male, swarming around a single female. As they clamored for an opportunity to mate, Aigner's camera lens clicked.</p><p>The resulting photo, above, won the Grand Title in this year's <a href="https://www.nhm.ac.uk/wpy/">Wildlife Photographer of the Year</a> competition, which the Natural History Museum in London develops and produces each year.</p><p>From more than 38,000 entries, Aigner's photo and 19 other category winners stood out.</p><p>"Wings whirring, incoming males home in on the ball of buzzing bees that is rolling straight into the picture. The sense of movement and intensity is shown at bee-level magnification and transforms what are little cactus bees into big competitors for a single female," Roz Kidman Cox, who chaired the panel of judges, said in a statement.</p><p>Other winning photos reveal animals, birds, and sea creatures in the throes of life: hunting, being hunted, wandering, dying, dancing for potential mates, and struggling to survive as their world gets smaller.</p><h2>The Grand Title winner for young photographers captured the contrast inside a whale's mouth</h2><div type="image" title="whale mouth" height="1707" width="2560" msid="94797369" hostid="261"></div><p>Katanyou Wuttichaitanakorn, a 16-year-old from Thailand, was on a whale-watching tour when a Bryde's whale surfaced near the boat. Struck by the whale's dark skin, pale pink gums, and brushy mass of baleen teeth, he snapped a picture. It snagged Wuttichaitanakorn's first award in the competition.</p><p>Cox called the photo a "dazzling creation."</p><p>"The pin-sharp detail of the tiny anchovies is set against an abstraction of color, with the weave of brown baleen hair rimmed by a cascade of water drops," Cox said.</p><h2>In another winning photo, a snake captured a spooky snack</h2><div type="image" title="snake with bat in mouth poking out of rocks" height="1708" width="2560" msid="94797370" hostid="261"></div><p>In the Cave of the Hanging Snakes, in Quintana Roo, Mexico, Fernando Constantino Martínez Belmar waited in the dark as a Yucatán rat snake poked its head from the rock ceiling. Just like every night, as thousands of bats swarmed out of the cave, the resident snakes waited for just the right opportunity to lunge from their hiding places and snatch a meal.</p><p>Using a red light that would be less disruptive in the dark, Martínez Belmar captured the hunt in the split moment before this snake retreated with its prize.</p><h2>A snow leopard pursued its own, much bigger, prey</h2><div type="image" title="snow leopard pursues ibexes in the snow" height="1440" width="2560" msid="94797371" hostid="261"></div><p>Across a ravine in the Himalayas, Anand Nambiar watched this leopard maneuver uphill from a herd of ibex, then charge them toward a steep cliff.</p><p>Snow leopards are at risk of extinction due to hunting, climate change, and mining that destroys their habitat.</p><h2>A vulnerable spectacled bear surveyed its disappearing territory</h2><div type="image" title="black bear stands on hill above town" height="1707" width="2560" msid="94797372" hostid="261"></div><p>Spectacled bears are the only bear species native to South America, and their numbers are dwindling.
