<br /><br /><ul><li><keyword id="685487" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Spotify">Spotify</keyword> users in India will finally be able to stream Bruno Mars, <keyword id="1432681" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ed-Sheeran">Ed Sheeran</keyword> and other popular stars.<br /></li><li>The music streaming service has renewed its partnership with the <keyword id="347869" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Warner-Music-Group">Warner Music Group</keyword>, ending a very public dispute over music rights.<br /></li><li>The music giant’s full library of songs now extends to India as well.<br /></li></ul>Spotify and one the world’s largest music labels, Warner Music Group, have renewed their global licensing deal ending a very public dispute of music rights.<br /><br />The music giant’s full library of music will finally be available to users in India — including songs by Bruno Mars, <keyword id="34647" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Coldplay">Coldplay</keyword>, Ed Sheeran, Linkin Park and others.<br /><br />“Spotify and Warner Music Group are pleased to announce a renewed global licensing partnership. This expanded deal covers countries where Spotify is available today, as well as additional markets. The two companies look forward to collaborating on impactful global initiatives for Warner artists and songwriters, and working together to grow the music industry over the long term,” said a joint statement by the companies. <br /><br />The Indian music streaming industry is highly competitive with over 10 different music streaming apps in the market including local big wigs like Gaana, JioSaavn and Wynk. However, the Swedish music streaming app has been fighting its way through with one hand tied behind its back.<br /><br /><strong>The lawsuit by Warner Chappel<br /></strong>Three days ahead of its launch in India, Spotify’s grand entry into one of the biggest music streaming markets in the world was marred by a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/spotify-india-launch-delayed-by-warner-music/articleshow/68165261.cms">lawsuit by Warner Chappel</a> — Warner Music Group’s local music publishing arm in February 2019.<br /><br />The Swedish music streaming app argued that it was using an Indian law, which allowed radio stations to play music from Chappel, to provide songs on its platform. However, it had to pull out millions of songs from its library as Chappel filed an injunction against Spotify.<br /><br />“WMG’s abusive behaviour would harm many non-Warner artists, labels and publisher, and prevent Spotify from competing in the market, leaving us no choice but to file for a statutory license,” the company <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/spotify-india-launch-delayed-by-warner-music/articleshow/68165261.cms">told Business Insider</a> at the time.<br /><br />Blaise Fernandes, CEO of the Indian Music Industry (<a href="https://thenextweb.com/in/2020/02/07/indias-streaming-music-market-is-now-200-million-strong-but-hardly-anyones-paying-for-it/">IMI</a>), estimates that there are around 200 million people in India who are streaming music. While the demand for music is huge, people don’t want to dip into their pockets to listen to songs.<br /><br />The disparity has made it hard for international giants to find their footing in India. Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran, Coldplay and others will now be available to Spotify users in India

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Boomy is an AI company which lets users generate music then get royalty payments from streams.</li><li>Tens of thousands of its songs were taken down by Spotify, the Financial Times reported.</li></ul><p>Spotify has taken down tens of thousands of songs which were generated by the AI startup Boomy, the <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/b6802c8f-50e7-4df8-8682-cca794881e30" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Financial Times</a> reported.</p><p>Boomy lets users create tunes in different styles from rap to lo-fi, then release it to streaming services where they can be paid royalties.</p><p>Despite only fully launching to the public in 2021, Boomy's <a href="https://boomy.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">website</a> claims it has generated 14.5 million songs or 14% of the world's recorded music.</p><p>But the tracks were removed because the number of streams had been artificially boosted, Spotify said.</p><p>Universal Music warned all the main streaming platforms that it had seen suspicious activity on Boomy songs –  suggesting that bots had been used to inflate audience statistics – and Spotify then took down about 7% of the tracks uploaded by Boomy, according to the FT. </p><p>In a statement sent to Insider, Spotify said: "Artificial streaming is a longstanding, industry-wide issue that Spotify is working to stamp out across our service."</p><p>"When we identify or are alerted to potential cases of stream manipulation, we mitigate their impact by taking action that may include the removal of streaming numbers and the withholding of royalties," it added. "This allows us to protect royalty payouts for honest, hardworking artists."</p><p>The <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/aec1679b-5a34-4dad-9fc9-f4d8cdd124b9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">FT also previously reported</a> that Universal told streaming platforms to block AI services from training themselves on its songs.</p><p>"You could say: compose a song that has the lyrics to be like Taylor Swift, but the vocals to be in the style of Bruno Mars, but I want the theme to be more Harry Styles," a person close to the situation told the FT. "The output you get is due to the fact the AI has been trained on those artists' intellectual property."</p><p>Last month, the Spotify CEO Daniel Ek said the music industry had "legitimate concerns" about AI-generated songs, adding that Spotify was hoping to "establish a position" where it can protect creators but also permit innovation on its platform.</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/drake-ai-music-clone-easy-tiktok-2023-5">AI-generated songs using the voices of Drake and The Weeknd</a> racked up millions of views on TikTok last month, before being taken down for copyright infringements, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/music/2023/apr/18/ai-song-featuring-fake-drake-and-weeknd-vocals-pulled-from-streaming-services" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Guardian</a> reported.</p><p>Boomy did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment, sent outside US working hours.</p>

Here Are The Most Streamed Love Songs On Spotify During Valentine's Day

<p>17-year-old New Zealand pop artist Lorde may not want to be royal, but that's kind of what she's become over the last year or so with her hit "Royals."</p>
<p>Spotify just revealed its predictions for the Grammy Award winners this year, and it's looking like Lorde will walk away with the Best Solo Pop Performance award. </p>
<p>Spotify has predicted winners in each category, based on the order of most to least song and album streams on Spotify. <span>Last year, Spotify got four of its six predictions right.</span></p>

17-Year-Old Lorde Will Likely Win Best Pop Solo Performance This Year At The Grammys, According To Spotify

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>YouTube</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>YouTube has hired its first "Global Head of Music": Lyor Cohen, a powerhouse music exec who ran Def Jam and Warner Music Group before starting his own label.</p><p>Cohen's big job is going to be smoothing relations between YouTube and the music industry, which have been terrible, particularly in 2016.</p><p>Over 2016, major labels and other music heavyweights have continually slammed YouTube over the low rates it pays in royalties.</p><p>RIAA boss Cary Sherman has been particularly vocal about it. Streaming music has finally became the biggest part of revenue for the industry this year, and YouTube's model isn't what the labels want.</p><p>So why don't the labels refuse to sign new deals with YouTube? The answer is complicated, and comes back to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which gives YouTube a lot of protection against having to pay if its users post copyrighted material.</p><p>Here's Sherman again, on the topic of label negotiations, <a href="http://www.recode.net/2016/4/11/11586030/youtube-google-dmca-riaa-cary-sherman">from an interview with Recode</a>:</p><p>So YouTube has the labels between a rock and a hard place, but even so, an openly hostile relationship with labels isn't great for YouTube's business. That's especially true because in the EU, where the government seems to be receptive to the music industry's point of view. The European Commission is planning to reevaluate its own "safe harbor" positions. "Safe Harbor" is the basic concept that gets sites like YouTube off the hook for piracy. Those changes could be horrible for YouTube.</p><p>Bottom line: YouTube's bad relationship with labels could end up hurting its business, and that's where Cohen comes in.</p><p>Cohen joins a budding tradition of tech companies snagging well-connected music veterans to serve as dealmakers with labels and artists. The idea behind 300 was to be a new type of record label: a boutique venture that could still swing up and compete with the major labels. It signed artists like Fetty Wap and Young Thug. Google has invested $5 million in 300, <a href="http://www.recode.net/2016/9/28/13097724/youtube-lyor-cohen-300-fetty-wap">according to Recode</a>.</p><p>Cohen will continue to run 300 until December 5, according to YouTube. And after Cohen leaves, 300 will continue.</p><p>But Cohen's new challenge will be bringing the thinking of music industry titans in line with tech companies.
