Finding a partner is undoubtedly challenging in our world, but sharks and crocodiles, known for their strength and independence, are now taking matters into their own fins and claws by reproducing without the hassle of mating! On November 1, <keyword id="783524" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="brookfield-zoo" source="Orion">Brookfield Zoo</keyword> in the United States joyfully announced the birth of a <keyword id="6533612" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shark" source="Orion">shark</keyword> within its confines. What makes this tale intriguing isn't just the captive hatching; it's the revelation that the female shark had been without male contact for four years prior! Named for the large eyespots resembling shoulder pads above their pectoral fins, these nocturnal sharks are typically found in warm, shallow waters near Australia and are known to occasionally "walk" short distances on the seafloor. Upon reaching sexual maturity at seven, the Brookfield Zoo shark began producing 2-4 eggs monthly, sans fertilization by male genetic material — a phenomenon known as <keyword id="1319330" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="parthenogenesis" source="Orion">parthenogenesis</keyword>. Although most eggs were infertile, one fortuitously proved fertile. After five months of incubation, a 5-6 inch pup hatched on August 23. Initially kept under wraps, the two-month-old pup now playfully explores the zoo's habitats. Mike Masellis, a lead animal care specialist at Brookfield Zoo, shared, “We are happy to report that our epaulette pup has been eating well on her diet of finely chopped capelin, minced squid tentacles, and other finely chopped seafood. Our colleagues at New England Aquarium have been a great resource as shark pups produced parthenogenetically can be very delicate.” Parthenogenesis, meaning "virgin creation," gained attention recently after the first-ever virgin <keyword id="6392350" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="crocodile" source="Orion">crocodile</keyword> birth was observed in June at a Costa Rican zoo. A toddler fell 15 feet into a habitat with seven gorillas, <a href="http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-gorilla-saves-boy-brookfield-zoo-anniversary-20160815-story.html">according to the Chicago Tribune</a>. One gorilla,&#xa0;Binti-Jua, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Py_1aCt2c0s">picked him up and cradled&#xa0;him</a> like a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piet%C3%A0">p</a><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piet%C3%A0">ietà</a>. He carried him to the enclosure's doorway and gently set him down for the paramedics. She was praised for her maternal nature. A Chicago grocer offered her 25 pounds of free bananas. Dozens of citizens offered to adopt her."She picked up the boy, kind of cradling him, and walked him around," Sondra Catzen, a zoo spokeswoman, told the Tribune at the time. The boy was unconscious when Binti-Jua picked him up. He didn't know he had a savior until he woke up in front of the paramedics. He later made a full recovery.<div></div>Binti-Jua had a sad upbringing. Her name means "daughter of sunlight" in Swahili (<a href="https://twitter.com/jayshams/status/754714624713449472">Harambe's means "comong together" in the same language</a>).&#xa0;But her mother, in the&#xa0;Columbus Zoo in Ohio, treated her indifferently. She was cradled and raised by human handlers and other gorillas in her enclosure.Eventually, Binti-Jua became a hero. The story of Binti-Jua is still known in the annals of the Brookfield Zoo.Her story&#xa0;stands in stark contrast with Harambe's fate."That's my baby! That's my baby!" the mother screamed when her son fell into Harambe's enclosure. It sent&#xa0;a chill through the crowd."The gorilla's got my baby!" the mother of the child who fell into Binti-Jua's said&#xa0;twenty years earlier, <a href="http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20142136,00.html">according to People</a>.In Harambe's case, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/newt-gingrich-gorilla-shooting-cincinnati-2016-6">the gorilla didn't protect the child</a>. He stood over him for some time, then grabbed him by the ankle and dragged him through the water, across the floor of the enclosure. <div></div>The zoo workers decided to kill him, for the safety of the child.Whether Harambe deserved to die is debatable, but that's what happened. Nonetheless, this tale of two gorillas is an example of what happens when a child falls into the enclosure of a Western lowland gorilla.&#xa0;Sometimes the gorilla is gentle, and becomes a hero. The baby girl, born to a 26-year-old dolphin named Allie, weighed 40 pounds and measured three feet long at birth.

The birds are most commonly found in their native Australia and Southeast Asia.While most birds' eyes are positioned on the sides of their head, the frogmouth's forward-facing eyes make the creatures appear more "personable" and "humanlike," Tim Snyder, the curator of birds at the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/29/science/instagrammable-bird-frogmouth.html?action=click&amp;module=Editors%20Picks&amp;pgtype=HomepageHomepage">told The New York Times</a>. "They always look perpetually angry," Snyder told the outlet. "The look on their face just looks like they're always frustrated or angry with you when they're looking at you...it's kind of funny."Thömmes told The Times she didn't expect the frogmouth to take the number one spot. Out of more than 27,000 images examined by the duo, the frogmouth was only in 65, she said."The frogmouth brings that factor of surprise as it just does not look like any other bird, with its almost anthropomorphic, facial features," Thömmes told The Times. Thömmes provided an in-depth explanation of how the method works to The Times: "[The number of likes on an Instagram photo] alone doesn't have much meaning to it, especially if we want to compare it to another photo," she said. But once the scientists control for "reach and time," "we can for example, state that Photo X received 25 percent more likes than the exposure to the audience alone can explain." Other popular birds on Instagram include the pigeon, the <a href="https://ebird.org/species/hartur1">turaco</a>, the <a href="https://ebird.org/species/hoopoe">hoopoe</a>, and the <a href="https://ebird.org/species/splfai1">fairywren</a>, according to the study.

<div class="image-container float_right" style="width:480px"><div class="image">AP</div></div>Two weeks ago, <keyword id="945580" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Miguel-Cabrera">Miguel Cabrera</keyword> hit a home run at Tropicana Field that landed in the Rays' cownose ray fish tank beyond the center field wall (see video below) and now <keyword id="25253" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="PETA">PETA</keyword> wants the tank closed permanently.
PETA announced today that they have sent a letter to the Rays asking that the "touch tank" be closed and the rays be returned to their home water. PETA specifically referenced the Cabrera home run and noted that they had warned the Rays of such an incident as early as 2006.
The rays are "held captive at Tropicana Field...[and] are subject to harassment, loud crowds, and even baseballs capable of seriously injuring them," says PETA Foundation Director of Captive Animal Law Enforcement Delcianna Winders. "When it comes to compassion, the Rays are batting .000."
Of course, it would seem that the chances of a ball actually injuring a ray are extremely small.
Carbrera's home run was just the second in eight seasons to land in the tank, which allows fans to pet and feed the cownose rays. In addition, the likelihood of a ball actually hitting a ray that is scooting along the bottom of the tank and still be traveling fast enough to injure the ray makes this scenario unlikely to ever happen.
PETA did note that rays at a Brookfield Zoo touch tank in Chicago suffered a 56% mortality rate and another tank at the Fresno Chaffee Zoo had a 95% mortality rate.
