<ul><li>Ookla released the list of countries with top and low internet speeds.</li><li>According to a network insights company, Papua and Ukraine emerged as top gainers.</li><li>India’s rank dropped by four ranks in fixed broadband performance.</li></ul>India has climbed two spots in the global ranking for median cell internet speeds in April 2022. In <a href="https://www.speedtest.net/global-index">Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index</a>, India managed to increase the download speed from 13.67 Mbps to 14.19 Mbps in April, meanwhile <keyword id="13974368" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fixed-broadband-speed" source="Orion">fixed broadband speed</keyword> dropped from 48.15 Mbps to 48.09 Mbps. Broadband speeds in India have dipped, but at the same time, mobile download speeds have increased. These numbers helped India to reach 118th rank globally but a drop in download speed has taken the country to 76th rank from 72nd rank. Countries with leading internet speed According to the latest rankings, United Arab Emirates and Singapore gained the top spots as UAE has a median download speed of 134.48 Mbps for mobile and Singapore has 207.61 Mbps for fixed broadband. War struck country Ukraine following Papua and New Guinea was among the biggest gainers in April 2022. Ukraine gained the highest number for median mobile broadband efficiency and Papua for fixed broadband performance. According to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) data for March this year, Reliance Jio delivered the fastest download speeds. During March, Reliance Jio offered an average speed of 21.20 Mbps in February. Vodafone Idea and Airtel delivered 17.9 Mbps and 13.7 Mbps download speeds respectively. In terms of upload speed, Vodafone Idea led the category with an average upload speed of 8.2 Mbps, followed by Jio at 7.3 Mbps, and Airtel at 6.1 Mbps. India climbs two ranks in speed test for mobile broadband speed but fixed broadband speed dips: Ookla

Broadband <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> <keyword id="23897" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="forum" source="Orion">Forum</keyword> (<keyword id="979219" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="bif" source="Orion">BIF</keyword>) on Wednesday hailed the government's step to raise the minimum speed of broadband to 2Mbps from 512Kbps, which is a 400 per cent increase. However, it stressed that this is not enough for a 'mobile first' country. The Forum said that it is unfortunate that as many as 45,180 villages in India do not have any 4G coverage at all. "While this upgradation in minimum broadband speed is indeed a big milestone, India still has a long way to go to catch up with major regimes like the US where the regulator (FCC) has already prescribed a minimum broadband speed of 25Mbps," said the BIF. Even Bangladesh has prescribed a higher minimum broadband speed of 5Mbps. Still, the move will help in lifting the overall quantum of per capita data consumption and improve the service experience. Being a 'mobile first' country, India heavily relies on mobile broadband with almost 98 per cent of the broadband users accessing it via their mobile phones. "2Mbps may not sound good enough for the modern broadband era as one would need much higher speeds for satisfactory experience in applications viz. telecommuting, file downloading, video conferencing, streaming video - both SD &amp; HD," said <keyword id="1146565" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tv-ramachandran" source="Orion">TV Ramachandran</keyword>, President, BIF. India raises broadband speed to 2Mbps but even Bangladesh offers 5Mbps

Reliance Jio launches JioSpaceFiber: India's first satellite-based gigabit broadband service

India has recorded the <keyword id="11889333" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="highest-growth-in-fixed-broadband">highest growth in fixed broadband</keyword> download speed at 60.06 Mbps, a growth from 40.45 Mbps, which was recorded in July 2020, according to <keyword id="11889332" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ooklas-Speedtest-Global-Index-">Ookla's Speedtest Global Index.</keyword> The fixed broadband upload speed also witnessed a spike from 35.04 Mbps in July 2020 to 56.47 Mbps in July 2021. The Speedtest Global Index released by Ookla for the month of July ranks India on 68th spot, up by 7 ranks from that of last year in the fixed <keyword id="1935952" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="broadband-speed">broadband speed</keyword> segment. India's overall performance in mobile download speed has increased consistently, with a slight dip in the months from December 2020 to April 2021. While there was also a slight decrease in mobile download speed from June 2021 to July 2021, 17.84 Mbps to 17.77 Mbps, respectively, India maintained its global mobile ranking at 122nd place. As per the July Global Speedtest Index, the UAE and Monaco have maintained the top spots, same as in June 2021, in mobile broadband and fixed broadband segments with a mean download speed of 190.03 Mbps and 256.70 Mbps, respectively. The recent report by Ookla on the Indian telecom market is already anticipating growth in the network performance post 5G spectrum roll out. According to Speedtest data, recent 5G launches in the Asia Pacific point to a potential 10x increase in median download speeds (5G vs 4G-LTE). In terms of mobile broadband also, India fell two rands to 2 spots to 130th compared to February 2020. The report said that the mean fixed broadband speed in India has been declining since the beginning of 2020, from 41.48 Mbps in January to 35.98 Mbps in March, a drop by 5.5 Mbps. Similarly, mean download speeds on fixed broadband have decreased from 39.65 Mbps in February to 35.98 Mbps in March. Further, there was a slight dip in mean mobile download speed, from 11.83 Mbps in February to 10.15 Mbps in March 2020. "When networks are under usage strain, like they are in this unprecedented time of lockdown in India due to COVID-19, it is natural that they experience some level of slowdown," said Doug Suttles, CEO of Ookla. "It is important to note that while the internet itself should handle elevated usage, there may be impacts to speed as people continue to move their daily activities increasingly online. While the core of the internet remains stable, some ISP networks may struggle to keep up," Suttles said. According to the Ookla's March Speedtest Global Index, UAE is in first position for mobile broadband speed with a mean download of 83.52 Mbps and Singapore holds the top spot for fixed broadband speed with a mean download of 197.26 Mbps. Overall fixed median download speeds in India saw a slight increase from 49.14 Mbps in December to 50.02 Mbps in January. In November, India ranked at 105th position, globally in median mobile speeds. The UAE leads the chart for overall global median mobile speeds, whereas Papua New Guinea increased 24 spots in rank globally. For fixed broadband download speeds, Singapore is consistent at the top spot while Cyprus increased 20 spots in rank globally. Overall, India showed improvement in its global ranking for median fixed broadband speeds, moving from the 84th position in March to the 83rd position in April. The country's performance in fixed median download speeds witnessed a slight increase from 50.71 Mbps in March to 51.12 Mbps in April. Qatar led the chart for global median mobile speeds, whereas Senegal jumped 16 spots in rank globally. For overall global fixed median speeds, Bahrain registered the highest increase in rank, jumping by 14 spots globally, with Singapore sustaining the first spot this month as well. In January, India ranked at 69th position globally in median mobile speeds, while, in February, India ranked at 67th position. Meanwhile, Qualcomm is rolling out 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) in collaboration with Reliance Jio to serve millions of residents in India, the chip-maker's President and CEO Cristiano Amon has said, as the country doubles down on providing 5G services to all by the end of the year. With the roll-out of 5G in India, the global chip-maker had bolstered its efforts with Reliance Jio to help it fast connect 100 million homes through its 5G FWA, including the millimetre wave (mmWave).
