In a boost to Elon Musk's <keyword id="20034452" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="starlink" source="keywords">Starlink</keyword>, Communications Minister Scindia has said the spectrum for satellite broadband will be allocated and not auctioned as sought by Indian billionaires Mukesh Ambani and Sunil Mittal. The satellite broadband spectrum will however be not given free and sector regulator Trai will fix a price for the resource, he told PTI in a text and video interview. "Every country has to follow the <keyword id="20848482" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="international-telecommunications-union" source="keywords">International Telecommunications Union</keyword> (ITU), which is the organisation that lays out the policy for spectrum in space or satellites, and the ITU has been very clear in terms of the spectrum being given out on an assignment basis. In addition, if you look across the world today, I cannot think of a single country that auctions spectrum for satellite," Scindia said. India is a member of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a UN agency for digital technology. Musk's Starlink and global peers like Amazon's Project Kuiper back an administrative allocation. While Ambani's Reliance Jio has been vocal about the need to allocate such spectrum through an auction to provide a level playing field to legacy operators who buy airwaves and set up infrastructure like telecom towers, Mittal last month at an industry event where Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also present articulated the need to use bidding for such allocation. Jio and Mittal's Bharti Airtel - India's largest and second-largest operators, respectively - feel that giving away the satellite broadband airwaves at a pre-decided price by the government will create an uneven playing field since they had to compete in an auction to get spectrum for their terrestrial wireless phone networks. The two are vying for a piece of the satellite broadband segment as well. Musk-led Starlink is demanding administrative allotment of licences in line with the global trend as it looks to tap into the world's fastest-growing mobile telephony and internet market. Scindia said the Telecom Act of 2023 passed in December has put the matter in 'Schedule 1', which means that the Satcom spectrum will be allocated administratively. Such an allocation will be at a government-decided price, and allow foreign firms like Starlink to offer voice and data services. If the spectrum were to be auctioned, it would have made it costlier for Starlink to roll out services. Starlink has applied for a licence to start operations in the country. Scindia, however, offered no clues on the fate of his application. The minister said that the regulatory process is very clear and transparent. The new Telecom Act has been passed, and the Satellite spectrum is very clearly a part of that in schedule one, he pointed out. "...and therefore, we are open to looking at the application of any entity that wants to invest in India at this point in time. I think only one or two licenses have been given out. And whoever else wants to participate, India is surely going to welcome that," the minister said. Last month, Musk, in a post on X, termed the demand made by Jio for shunning sector regulator Trai's consultation paper on satellite broadband being allocated and not auctioned as "unprecedented", and when Mittal made the pitch in the presence of the Prime Minister, he asked if it was "too much trouble" to allow Starlink to provide internet services in India. This was perhaps the first time that Musk, whose networth of USD 241 billion is more than the combined wealth of Ambani, Mittal and Gautam Adani, had spoken directly against demands for a level playing field made by the Indian firms. State-run <keyword id="19970536" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSNL" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="BSNL" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="BSNL">BSNL</keyword> was the only player that added new subscribers and led the market in terms of new net customer addition, according to a monthly subscribers report released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India on Friday. According to the report, BSNL added over 2.94 million mobile subscribers in July. Bharti Airtel lost 1.69 million mobile subscribers which was highest among its peers. Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio lost 1.41 million and 758,000 mobile subscribers, respectively. Overall, the telecom subscriber base in the country declined marginally to 1,205.17 million in July from 1,205.64 million in June. North East, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Mumbai, Kolkata, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Bihar, West Bengal, UP East, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh telecom circles recorded decline in mobile customer base post the hike in mobile services rates. The wireline or the fixed line connections segment increased by about 1% to 35.56 million in July from 35.11 million in June. Reliance Jio led the fixed-line segment with addition of over 480,000 new subscribers. It was followed by Bharti Airtel which added over 136,000 new subscribers, VMIPL 12,413, Vi 11,375, Tata Teleservices 3,971 and Quadrant added 12 new fixed line customers. BSNL was the biggest loser in the segment. The state-run firm lost 134,000 fixed line customers and its sister concern lost 56,454 customers. The broadband customer base in the country increased to 946.19 million at the end of July from 940.75 million in June. Top five players accounted for 98.42% of total broadband connection in the country. Reliance Jio led the chart with 488.63 million <keyword id="23252277" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="broadband-customers" source="keywords">broadband customers</keyword>, Airtel with 284.03 million, Vodafone Idea with 126.72 million, BSNL with 29.61 million and Atria Convergence with 2.26 million. Reliance Jio launches JioSpaceFiber: India's first satellite-based gigabit broadband service

I’m meh about them because I’m usually up getting a drink or some chili or something.But this one eventually caught my eye — after I saw it several days in a row after the game. It only ran in some places in the US, so it may be completely new to you:To spell it out: This is from Spectrum, also known as Charter — the biggest cable TV provider in the US, and the second-largest broadband internet provider in the US. And it’s specifically targeting a rival program from T-Mobile — the third-biggest wireless carrier in the US, which has started selling its own broadband service.Which, I vaguely knew about? Because I’m supposed to know about this stuff professionally. And not because T-Mobile has spent a ton of money advertising this on places like … the Super Bowl. (Again, I really tune out these things.)But it really did take a minute or two for the penny to drop: Spectrum, which hadn’t advertised on the Super Bowl for years, decided to do it again … so it could insult a rival service. Which means that service … must be a threat.Is that right?I’ve heard for years about the idea that wireless carriers would eventually take on the big broadband companies by selling “fixed wireless” broadband — broadband you can get via 5G airwaves using a box you put in your window instead of relying on cables buried in the ground. Which sounds great to me. Because, per the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2021/07/09/fact-sheet-executive-order-on-promoting-competition-in-the-american-economy/">Biden White House</a>, more than 200 million Americans are stuck between choosing from two broadband providers, max. And I like the idea of having more options for my internet. That’s why I used to be really interested in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.vox.com/2016/5/11/11613308/google-fiber-alphabet">Google’s plans to sell its own broadband</a>, which it has basically bailed on. And why in 2016, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.vox.com/2016/11/18/13659384/starry-internet-broadband-boston-beta-transmitter-video">I was walking around rooftops in Boston to see how startup Starry Internet</a> planned to beam wireless into homes around the country. But Starry never caught on — <a target="_blank" href="https://www.telecompetitor.com/starry-emerges-from-bankruptcy-as-a-private-company/">in fact, it filed for Chapter 11 last year</a> — and I figured that if it was really happening at scale, and I could get the internet beamed into my house, I would know about it at this point.Turns out, I am not a top-notch broadband reporter. If I were, I would know that competition from fixed wireless has been keeping the broadband guys up at night for some time. “It has been absolutely the key controversy for cable investors for the last four years,” analyst Craig Moffett, of MoffettNathanson, told me Wednesday.And with good reason: Right now, the wireless guys (mostly T-Mobile and Verizon) have 7 million fixed wireless customers, per MoffettNathanson. And T-Mobile alone has been adding about 500,000 more every quarter. (The broadband guys, for now, have 113 million subs.)Most of those new wireless subs have to be coming from the former customers of the broadband cable guys — who have basically stopped describing themselves as cable guys <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jon-stewart-daily-show-audience-old-small-tv-ratings-streaming-2024-2">because cable TV is falling off a cliff</a>. They're now calling themselves broadband companies because that’s a great, high-margin business that isn’t going anywhere.The broadband guys are happy to tell you why they think their internet is better than the wireless internet the telco guys are selling. And it turns out they’ve been doing it in ads for the last couple of years. Here’s another one from Spectrum, telling you that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ispot.tv/ad/1dCC/spectrum-home-internet-enough-speed-for-all-of-us">T-Mobile won’t give you enough bandwidth to keep your family happy</a>. And here’s one from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ispot.tv/ad/2ByJ/xfinity-weve-become-nocturnal-featuring-judy-greer">Comcast, telling you the same thing</a>. Comcast also has a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.xfinity.com/compare/xfinity-vs-t-mobile-5g-home-internet?cjdata=MXxOfDB8WXww&amp;cjevent=07ed00fecb7b11ee825efed80a1cb827&amp;cmp=aff__100624757">webpage dedicated to its anti-T-Mobile sales pitch</a>.But spending <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/temu-spends-millions-super-bowl-ads-effort-win-us-users-2024-2">Super Bowl ad money</a> to do that? That's pretty telling.By the way: Moffett says there are legitimate questions about fixed wireless’ capacity to serve lots of people at scale. And whether it really makes economic sense for the wireless guys to sell it in the first place. So maybe all this growth caps out at some point.But for the moment, we know the cable guys — that is, the broadband guys — are no longer taking the fixed wireless guys for granted. And are worried about them eating into their core business.And also that maybe I should pay more attention to TV commercials.

Suddenly, there's real competition for broadband internet

<ul><li><keyword id="6355725" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-group">Tata group</keyword>’s Nelco is reportedly in final talks with Canadian firm Telesat to bring its Lightspeed satellite broadband internet services in India.</li><li>Both companies plan to ready their <keyword id="10986173" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="satellite-broadband-services">satellite broadband services</keyword> by 2024 in India and globally.</li><li>Tata and Telesat are also working on ways to make their services affordable to users.</li></ul>India may have the second-highest number of internet users in the world but there’s still a large fraction of people especially in the rural areas without access to high-speed internet connectivity. The solution to this problem could be satellite broadband connectivity that will cover even remote areas where telecom towers or fibre connections are hard to reach. There are already three companies planning to provide satellite broadband internet in India, and the latest to join is Tata group’s Nelco. According to a <a href="https://m.economictimes.com/industry/telecom/telecom-news/pact-with-telesat-likely-for-satellite-broadband/amp_articleshow/85190916.cms">report</a> by ET Telecom, Nelco is planning to offer satellite broadband services in India through the Canadian firm Telesat’s Lightspeed brand. Both companies are in the final stages of the arrangement, and plan to offer its services in India by 2024, the report added. Satellite broadband services aim to solve problems that mobile internet or fibre broadband can’t but it’s also the most expensive of the three. Tata and Telesat plan to work on the business-to-business (B2B) model wherein the satellite bandwidth will be offered to telcos so that they can provide to areas where mobile connectivity is weak. The two companies also plan to work on ways to make satellite broadband affordable in India. Telesat’s global plan for satellite broadband services include an investment of almost $5 billion for a constellation of around 298 LEO satellites. Although expensive, LEO satellites offer stronger signals and faster speeds than traditional fixed-satellite networks as they orbit closer to the Earth. Telesat and Tata plan to take things further with their satellite broadband services once the new Spacecom policy that should offer better clarity for LEO satellite systems operators and setting up in-country satellite gateways, is out. Telesat will be joining Bharti Enterprises-backed OneWeb, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/elon-musks-starlink-satellite-internet-is-coming-to-india-heres-how-you-can-pre-book-your-connection/articleshow/81268052.cms">Elon Musk’s Starlink</a> and even Amazon for satellite internet in India. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/bharti-led-oneweb-raises-funds-from-softbank-hughes-taking-its-total-funding-to-1-4-billion/articleshow/80297607.cms">OneWeb</a> plans to offer its services in India by May 2022 which would make it the first company to do so. Tata group to offer satellite broadband services in India through Telesat’s Lightspeed brand

The company said in a statement that the disruption was caused by a technical glitch. "Our internet services were briefly disrupted this morning due to a technical glitch. The services have been fully restored," a company spokesperson said. "We deeply regret the inconvenience caused to our customers," the spokesperson added. On Internet outage detector platform Downdetector, the map showed widespread outages across the country, including Metros, that started around 11 a.m. While 50 per cent users reported facing total blackout, 34 per cent had problems with mobile Internet and 16 per cent had no signal, according to Downdetector. The company was yet to ascertain and reveal the cause of the mega outage. "<keyword id="15491" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="airtel" source="Orion">Airtel</keyword> Fiber is down, along with their app and website. #AirtelDown," posted one user on Twitter. Telecom operator Bharti Airtel's consolidated net profit fell 2.8 per cent during Q3FY22 to Rs 830 crore on a year-on-year basis, the company announced this week. In the same quarter of the previous fiscal, the consolidated net profit of the company stood at Rs 854 crore. On the other hand, the total revenues during Q3FY22 grew 12.6 per cent to Rs 29,867 crore, as against Rs 26,518 crore in the same quarter last fiscal.

That's partly because multiple generations of video watchers have either cut the cord or never got one in the first place. India has recorded the <keyword id="11889333" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="highest-growth-in-fixed-broadband">highest growth in fixed broadband</keyword> download speed at 60.06 Mbps, a growth from 40.45 Mbps, which was recorded in July 2020, according to <keyword id="11889332" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ooklas-Speedtest-Global-Index-">Ookla's Speedtest Global Index.</keyword> The fixed broadband upload speed also witnessed a spike from 35.04 Mbps in July 2020 to 56.47 Mbps in July 2021. The Speedtest Global Index released by Ookla for the month of July ranks India on 68th spot, up by 7 ranks from that of last year in the fixed <keyword id="1935952" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="broadband-speed">broadband speed</keyword> segment. India's overall performance in mobile download speed has increased consistently, with a slight dip in the months from December 2020 to April 2021. While there was also a slight decrease in mobile download speed from June 2021 to July 2021, 17.84 Mbps to 17.77 Mbps, respectively, India maintained its global mobile ranking at 122nd place. As per the July Global Speedtest Index, the UAE and Monaco have maintained the top spots, same as in June 2021, in mobile broadband and fixed broadband segments with a mean download speed of 190.03 Mbps and 256.70 Mbps, respectively. The recent report by Ookla on the Indian telecom market is already anticipating growth in the network performance post 5G spectrum roll out. According to Speedtest data, recent 5G launches in the Asia Pacific point to a potential 10x increase in median download speeds (5G vs 4G-LTE). Mike Gallagher, in a letter to Musk first obtained by the outlet, reiterated to the businessman that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-elon-musk">SpaceX</a> had a contractual commitment to give the US Defense Department the ability to use its satellite communications service.It is unclear if other members of Congress also signed on to the letter, which was dated February 24, Forbes reported.
