<ul><li><keyword id="6355725" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-group">Tata group</keyword>’s Nelco is reportedly in final talks with Canadian firm Telesat to bring its Lightspeed satellite broadband internet services in India.</li><li>Both companies plan to ready their <keyword id="10986173" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="satellite-broadband-services">satellite broadband services</keyword> by 2024 in India and globally.</li><li>Tata and Telesat are also working on ways to make their services affordable to users.</li></ul>India may have the second-highest number of internet users in the world but there’s still a large fraction of people especially in the rural areas without access to high-speed internet connectivity. The solution to this problem could be satellite broadband connectivity that will cover even remote areas where telecom towers or fibre connections are hard to reach. There are already three companies planning to provide satellite broadband internet in India, and the latest to join is Tata group’s Nelco.<br /><br />According to a <a href="https://m.economictimes.com/industry/telecom/telecom-news/pact-with-telesat-likely-for-satellite-broadband/amp_articleshow/85190916.cms">report</a> by ET Telecom, Nelco is planning to offer satellite broadband services in India through the Canadian firm Telesat’s Lightspeed brand. Both companies are in the final stages of the arrangement, and plan to offer its services in India by 2024, the report added. Satellite broadband services aim to solve problems that mobile internet or fibre broadband can’t but it’s also the most expensive of the three. Tata and Telesat plan to work on the business-to-business (B2B) model wherein the satellite bandwidth will be offered to telcos so that they can provide to areas where mobile connectivity is weak. The two companies also plan to work on ways to make satellite broadband affordable in India.<br /><br />Telesat’s global plan for satellite broadband services include an investment of almost $5 billion for a constellation of around 298 LEO satellites. Although expensive, LEO satellites offer stronger signals and faster speeds than traditional fixed-satellite networks as they orbit closer to the Earth. Tata group to offer satellite broadband services in India through Telesat’s Lightspeed brand

<br /><keyword id="6354504" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="reliance-jio">Reliance Jio</keyword> has announced the launch of Jio Fiber broadband service from September 5 and the registration process has already started. The scheme comes with a bundled offer providing a combo pack of broadband connection, TV set-top box and a landline phone connection. Also called as the Jio GigaFiber, the Jio Fiber broadband package will be priced from Rs 700 per month and will go up to Rs 10,000 for premium class customers.<br /><br /><strong>What is on offer in Jio Fiber</strong><br /><br />Reliance industries has also launched a Jio Welcome offer that will provide the users who subscribe to its annual plans with an HD or 4K LED TV and a 4K set-top box for free. The landline connection given as part of the plan will also be free of cost. On top of it, the company has no plans to charge any installation charges during the time of rolling out the scheme. <br /><br /><strong>Applying rules for Jio Fiber</strong><br /><br />The users will have to make a refundable security deposit of Rs 2,500 to get the router or ONT device. India has recorded the <keyword id="11889333" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="highest-growth-in-fixed-broadband">highest growth in fixed broadband</keyword> download speed at 60.06 Mbps, a growth from 40.45 Mbps, which was recorded in July 2020, according to <keyword id="11889332" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ooklas-Speedtest-Global-Index-">Ookla's Speedtest Global Index.</keyword><br /><br />The fixed broadband upload speed also witnessed a spike from 35.04 Mbps in July 2020 to 56.47 Mbps in July 2021. The Speedtest Global Index released by Ookla for the month of July ranks India on 68th spot, up by 7 ranks from that of last year in the fixed <keyword id="1935952" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="broadband-speed">broadband speed</keyword> segment.<br /><br />India's overall performance in mobile download speed has increased consistently, with a slight dip in the months from December 2020 to April 2021. While there was also a slight decrease in mobile download speed from June 2021 to July 2021, 17.84 Mbps to 17.77 Mbps, respectively, India maintained its global mobile ranking at 122nd place.<br /><br />As per the July Global Speedtest Index, the UAE and Monaco have maintained the top spots, same as in June 2021, in mobile broadband and fixed broadband segments with a mean download speed of 190.03 Mbps and 256.70 Mbps, respectively.<br /><br />The recent report by Ookla on the Indian telecom market is already anticipating growth in the network performance post 5G spectrum roll out. Reliance Jio launches JioSpaceFiber: India's first satellite-based gigabit broadband service

New Delhi, Feb 19 () Full service carrier <keyword id="2467342" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vistara">Vistara</keyword> plans to offer in-flight broadband service on certain international routes by March-end after <keyword id="8801436" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="inducting-dreamliners">inducting Dreamliners</keyword> and Airbus 321 planes, a senior airline official said on Wednesday. A joint venture between Tatas and <keyword id="6368386" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="singapore-airlines">Singapore Airlines</keyword>, Vistara has tied up with Tata group firm Nelco to offer in-flight connectivity service.<br /><br /> Vistara would also be the first domestic carrier to provide in-flight braodband for fliers.<br /><br /> Boeing 787 aircraft are known as Dreamliners.<br /><br /> The airline would offer access to in-flight connectivity only on Dreamliners and Airbus 321 aircraft on international routes, Vistara Chief Strategy Officer Vinod Kannan told reporters here.<br /><br /> The service would also be available for domestic customers when these planes are operated in the Indian airspace.<br /><br /> Nelco has partnered with Panasonic Avionics Corporation to start the service.<br /><br /> "We have ordered Dreamliners and A321 which will be delivered by February-end or March. We will start their commercial operations on international routes by March-end or April with in-flight service on board.<br /><br /> "In the next two weeks, we will sit with Nelco and Panasonic to decide on the price," Kannan said.<br /><br /> Vistara has ordered six Dreamliners and ten A321 planes. In-flight broadband service would be made available on all these aircraft.<br /><br /> "We will get four Dreamliners and two A321 aircraft this year. By end of 2021, we will be offering in-flight connectivity in 10 aircraft," Kannan said.<br /><br /> According to him, a decision on offering the service in domestic flights would also  depend on routes where Dreamliners and A321 aircraft would fly.<br /><br /> "We will initially look at offering broadband service. We have not decided on offering voice calls," Kannan said.<br /><br /> Nelco MD and CEO P J Nath said the capability to provide both broadband and voice services would exist. It would depend on airline partners on the way they would like to package the services, he added.<br /><br /> "We are delighted that Nelco is spearheading in providing the long awaited Aero in-flight connectivity services in the country. Vistara is first airline to sign up for this service," Nath said.<br /><br /> Panasonic Avionics Corporation Vice President Tom Eskola said passengers would be able to access the service even at a height of 35,000 feet.<br /><br /> "We currently cover 99.6 per cent of routes on which aircraft fly. We are also migrating our system to generation 3 from generation 1. Vistara will have access to our generation 3 system when they start operation which will offer high speed broadband service during flight as they get on ground," Eskola said.

The previous two models which were priced at ₹1,500 and ₹2,999 have already been a big hit in the market, for giving smartphone features to a user at the most basic price. This not only reduces cost but is also eliminates the painful process of wire laying.<br /><br />FTTH, unlike wireless business, is a future-proof business, and a one-time investment. It means that Jio will not have to keep leasing spectrum to sustain this business. Moreover, it can reach congested and remotely located areas easily.<br /><br />The fixed broadband subscriber base currently uses copper connectivity for last mile connectivity and was at 18 million as on April 30, 2019. State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) dominates the market with over 9.15 million subscribers.<br /><br />Private players now want a piece of the pie. Tesco broadband has gone down across Britain

New Delhi, Feb 19 () Tata group firm Nelco and Panasonic Avionics Corporation on Wednesday announced forging a partnership for offering in-flight broadband service in Indian skies, starting with Vistara airlines.<p>Vistara is a joint venture of Tata Group and Singapore Airlines.  </p><p>The launch of this service will enable passengers to access broadband service during their flight in Indian airspace. </p><p>"We are delighted that Nelco is spearheading in providing the long awaited Aero in-flight connectivity services in the country. Vistara is the first airline to sign up for this service," Nelco MD and CEO P J Nath said while launching the service. </p>He further said that the company has partnered with subsidiary of Panasonic Avionics Corporation in this regard. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>BI Screenshot/FCC</span></p><p class="caption">The FCC label for fixed broadband</p></div><p></p></div></div>If you enjoy studying the sides of cereal boxes as you browse the supermarket aisles, you'll love the FCC's new labels for broadband internet service.</p><p>Those black-and-white "nutritional information" labels that grace the sides of everything from Wheaties to frozen raviolis are coming to an internet service provider near you.</p><p>The FCC has created similar labels to provide a quick and easy way for consumers to compare the precise contents of the broadband services offered by companies like AT&amp;T and Verizon.</p><p>Like the familiar food labels that highlight things like proteins, sugars and sodium, the internet labels break out key "nutritional" information such as typical upstream and downstream speeds, latency and additional data usage charges. </p><p>The creation of the labels follows the agency's adoption last year of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/what-the-fccs-net-neutrality-vote-really-means-2015-2">net neutrality rules</a> which require that internet service providers treat all traffic equally and requires that the companies provide consumers with clear info about internet they internet plans on offer. <a href="http://www.wsj.com/articles/fcc-announces-new-consumer-broadband-labels-1459795347?mod=e2tw">According to the Wall Street Journal</a>, the FCC has said it receives about 2,000 consumer complaints every year from consumers about unexpected broadband fees. </p><p>The FCC decided that food labels provided the ideal template for an easy-to-understand format for broadband service, meeting more than 20 times to "discuss and develop" the labels. <br />Reliance Industries has announced that Jio GigaFiber plans will be made available to the users under two options: prepaid as well as postpaid. How Reliance Jio Gigafiber broadband will work?

But <a href="https://cis.mit.edu/publications/analysis-opinion/2021/public-private-partnerships-key-providing-high-quality-broadband">public-private partnerships</a> between governments and internet service providers, like the <a href="https://www.fcc.gov/document/fcc-launches-20-billion-rural-digital-opportunity-fund-0">Rural Digital Opportunity Fund</a> (RDOF), are helping to bridge the digital divide, or the gap that exists between people with access to the internet and those without. </p><p>Launched in 2020, RDOF is an FCC program that will make $20.4 billion available from the agency's <a href="https://www.fcc.gov/general/universal-service-fund">Universal Service Fund</a> over the next decade to finance broadband networks in rural areas. So far, more than <a href="https://www.fcc.gov/document/fcc-announces-313-million-through-rural-digital-opportunity-fund">$5 billion has been deployed</a> to private utility and cable companies. To access funding, organizations submit a proposal for funding via a reverse auction. The agency <a href="https://broadbandbreakfast.com/2022/05/fcc-greenlights-200-million-more-in-latest-rural-digital-opportunity-fund-round/">greenlit</a> another $200 million for the partnership this month.</p><p><a href="https://corporate.charter.com/">Charter Communications</a>, a Stamford, Connecticut-based broadband <keyword id="14018940" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="connectivity" source="Orion">connectivity</keyword> and cable operator known for its <keyword id="14018942" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="spectrum" source="Orion">Spectrum</keyword> brand, received $1.2 billion from the RDOF to install fiber and cable projects in 24 states. The company, which holds a <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/chtr-stock">$77 billion</a> market capitalization as of this writing, has been working on broadband expansion in rural areas for several years. It has also committed<a href="https://corporate.charter.com/newsroom/charter-communications-launches-new-multiyear-multibilliondollar-initiative-to-expand-broadband-availability-to-over-1-million-new-customer-locations"> an additional $3.8 billion</a> from private capital expenditures to the projects.</p><div type="image" title="headshot of Catherine Bohigian" height="1762" width="2349" msid="91770819" hostid="261"></div>Through its RDOF commitments, Charter will <a href="https://www.spectrum.com/cp/build">add more than 100,000 miles of new network infrastructure</a> in underserved areas over the next five years and connect more than one million homes and businesses. Work is already underway on these projects, said Catherine Bohigian, the company's executive vice president of government affairs.<p>"We're building as fast as we can to get unserved families connected as quickly as possible, but even though providers like us are responsible for the actual internet connections and service, it takes a village to build and deliver internet service, especially in rural areas," she told Insider, adding that Charter coordinates with local governments, utility pole owners, and highway regulators for each project.</p><p>Here's a look at how public-private partnerships focused on broadband connectivity work, and the biggest wins and shortcomings that come with pairing utility companies with local governments.</p><h2><strong>Cable companies gain new customers while communities get connected</strong></h2><div type="image" title="headshot of Christopher Ali" height="998" width="1331" msid="91770822" hostid="261"></div>Rural communities often lack the knowledge and resources to expand broadband connectivity in their areas and become their own internet service providers, or ISPs. That's where public-private partnerships come in. Communities "don't have to develop the expertise from scratch," Christopher Ali, an associate professor of media studies at the University of Virginia and author of "<a href="https://mitpress.mit.edu/books/farm-fresh-broadband">Farm Fresh Broadband,</a>" told Insider.<p>Rural communities benefit by getting businesses and residents connected, but they still have to pay for internet service — though the FCC and some ISPs offer programs for low-income households. Cable and utility companies, meanwhile, benefit by gaining customers and growing their networks, Ali said, and local tax dollars and funding from programs like RDOF make it feasible for them to build the infrastructure.</p><p>"We need to be empowering communities and counties to be able to know their own broadband needs so they can approach a provider, rather than the other way around," Ali said.</p><h2><strong>Ensuring that broadband reaches the communities that need it the most</strong></h2><p>Still, <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2020/3/10/21173534/fcc-broadband-rural-funding-limits-ajit-pai-chuck-schumer-gillibrand">RDOF has been criticized</a> for not going far enough to reach the communities that need broadband the most. And, despite receiving RDOF money, some areas are so remote and rural that broadband providers may be<a href="https://www.theverge.com/2018/9/24/17882842/us-internet-broadband-map-isp-fcc-wireless-competition"> unwilling and not incentivized to build broadband infrastructure</a> there, with few people to pay for monthly internet service.</p><p>Closing the digital divide also depends on more than expanding broadband networks. Bohigian said it also requires addressing adoption issues, like the <a href="https://www.newamerica.org/oti/reports/cost-connectivity-2020/focus-on-the-united-states/">cost of internet services</a>, <a href="https://cs.stanford.edu/people/eroberts/cs181/projects/digital-divide/start.html">access to computers</a>, and <a href="https://gdc.unicef.org/resource/digital-divide-and-digital-literacy">digital literacy</a>. </p><p>Charter strives to fill these gaps by participating in the FCC's <a href="https://www.fcc.gov/broadbandbenefit#:~:text=The%20Emergency%20Broadband%20Benefit%20is,classrooms%2C%20and%20so%20much%20more.">Emergency Broadband Benefit program</a> and <a href="https://www.fcc.gov/acp">Affordable Connectivity Program</a>, aimed at helping households afford the internet, and educating people about these benefits. The company also offers <a href="https://www.spectrum.com/internet/spectrum-internet-assist">low-cost broadband service</a> for certain households.</p><h2><strong>Utility pole access is also another hurdle providers face</strong></h2><p>Private ISPs working in rural areas also have to contend with <a href="https://policy.charter.com/states-innovate-to-expedite-internet-expansion-for-rural-communities">access to utility poles</a>, which requires working with the local telephone, electric, or cable companies that own the poles. Other issues include navigating local rules and dealing with poles that are outdated and can't accommodate new network infrastructure, Bohigian said.</p><p>Charter completed projects in El Paso County, Texas, Richland County, South Carolina, and Evangeline Parish, Louisiana, ahead of schedule because pole owners helped streamline the projects, Bohigian added. That's not always the case, though. Sometimes, it can take months for the company to get permits to access poles, which delays projects.</p><p>"Faster access to poles can shave months — or even years — off of the time to deploy and it is essential to getting 100% of the country online," she said.</p>
