An Indo-German team of researchers has discovered a new species of catfish in <keyword id="28504" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="kerala" source="Orion">Kerala</keyword> measuring no more than 32 millimeters, with no eyes and a blood-red body. The researchers studied the genus <keyword id="7614752" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="horaglanis" source="Orion">Horaglanis</keyword> of catfish -- a diverse group of ray-finned fish. The tiny members of this genus, only about three centimetres in length, live in local aquifers without light. As part of a broad-based Citizen Science project, the study published in the journal Vertebrate Zoology was able to gather information on the distribution of the animals, their genetics, and evolutionary history. "Currently, 289 fish species are known from subterranean aquatic habitats worldwide -- less than 10 per cent of them live in aquifers," said <keyword id="5800719" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ralf-britz" source="Orion">Ralf Britz</keyword> of the Senckenberg Natural History Collections. "In order to obtain information from this almost unknown biotope, we conducted a six-year study of water-bearing laterite rock layers and their fascinating fish fauna in the southern Indian state of Kerala," <keyword id="4220271" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="britz" source="Orion">Britz</keyword> said. Horaglanis fishes live exclusively in aquifers, are very small, blind, and they lack pigments. "There are very few documented occurrences of these species -- as a rule, these elusive little fish only come to the surface when a domestic well is being dug or cleaned," Britz explained. The biologist and his Indian colleagues, led by <keyword id="2481025" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rajeev-raghavan" source="Orion">Rajeev Raghavan</keyword> from the University of Kochi, Kerala and Neelesh Dahanukar from Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence, Delhi-NCR, relied on the cooperation of local citizen scientists. Over a six-year period, they conducted a series of workshops, focus group discussions, and informal conversations with communities at several sites, including the type localities of the three Horaglanis species known to date. The researchers complemented this citizen science approach with targeted collection efforts in wells and above-ground storage tanks, with scoop nets in shallow wetlands, water channels, home gardens, and plantations, and with the use of baited traps in excavated wells on farmsteads, in ponds, and caves. "This allowed us to generate data sets with a total of 47 new site detections and 65 new genetic sequences. These show, among other things, that Horaglanis are endemic to the part of Kerala state south of the Palghat Gap -- the mountain pass apparently represents a biogeographical barrier for the subterranean world as well," Britz explained. "The genus is characterised by a high level of genetic diversity that has evolved over millions of years -- although the fishes' appearance has changed remarkably little," he added. In addition, the team succeeded in identifying a new species: Horaglanis populi is a catfish measuring no more than 32 millimetres, with no eyes and a blood-red body, and is genetically distinct from the three previously known Horaglanis species. "The specific name populi, the genitive of the Latin noun for 'people,' honours the invaluable contributions of the interested public in Kerala who helped document the biodiversity of these subterranean fishes -- including the discovery of the new species," says Britz. "Our Horaglanis project is an excellent example of how public involvement can greatly increase our knowledge of rarely collected organisms that live in relatively inaccessible habitats. Local people expand the researchers' 'eyes and ears' by several orders of magnitude," he added. Indo-German team discovers new catfish species in Kerala with no eyes, blood-red body

There are currently just 33 serious cases in Israel and a seven-day average of 321 new daily cases, compared with about 8,600 in January in the early stages of its vaccine drive.<div type="image" title="Teenager in Israel receiving vaccine injection" height="3376" width="4516" msid="84168153" hostid="261"></div>But 13,000 students and teachers are now in quarantine, and the interior minister has threatened to shut down Ben Gurion Airport if cases continue to increase.The rising case load is concerning for the country that was first to vaccinate its way out of the pandemic using the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.One study released this week found this vaccine was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/israel-may-reimpose-coronavirus-restrictions-as-delta-variant-fuels-surge-2021-7">only 64% effective against transmission of the Delta variant in Israel but was 93% effective at preventing hospitalization</a>.Miriam Britz-Kohn, a 49-year-old mother of three, lives in Binyamina in the north of the country, where the Delta variant was first observed in Israel around June 20.Her son's school informed her that children in one year group had tested positive, and mobile testing centers were quickly sent to monitor any spread."Binyamina is a small place, so it had a big impact in the town," she said."I felt we'd beaten corona. We felt great about it, but then it affected our neighborhood, and that was a wake-up call. The reality is it'll go up and down and be something that's impossible to get rid of completely, at least in the near future."Some of her neighbors, who were previously staying home to avoid infection before they were vaccinated, have stopped sending their children to school, afraid they might bring home a more-transmissible variant of the virus.Israel was already vaccinating children ages 12 to 15, and rising case numbers have encouraged more parents to vaccinate theirs.<div type="image" title="Israeli PM Naftali Bennett and Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz stand wearing masks in a hospital outside Tel Aviv" height="3667" width="5500" msid="84168156" hostid="261"></div>Britz-Kohn said many people had started vaccinating their teenagers to keep the entire family from having to isolate for coming into contact with someone who tested positive.Her middle child, a 13-year-old boy, has not yet been vaccinated, but Britz-Kohn said he already had COVID-19 and so should have antibodies.She said she had "mixed feelings" about getting him vaccinated, as his age makes him less likely to develop severe symptoms from a <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> infection. But now she plans to get him vaccinated in light of the rising case numbers.Shlomit Levy, a senior nurse working in Tel Hashomer Hospital, never stopped wearing her mask at work and in stores, even when the mandate was lifted for three weeks."Everybody should wear one," she said. "Because if we all do, we can keep transmission low but let life carry on."Levy told Insider she felt masks kept her and many of her colleagues safe for the year before they were vaccinated. She works in a cancer unit and said that while some colleagues did catch COVID-19, she thought they most likely did so outside the hospital.Now she's part of a group that is tested regularly for antibodies as part of a study into how long the vaccine's protection lasts. She worries that as her antibody levels decrease, she could catch the new variant (<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fauci-do-not-measure-covid-protection-immunity-with-antibody-test-2021-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">though experts say it's more complicated than that</a>)."I wear an N95 mask, so it gives me some protection as well as helping stop the spread," she said. "I'm not only afraid for myself, but also for my patients. Some of them couldn't be vaccinated because of their cancer treatments."May Bejach, 28, a university student in Tel Aviv, where she was born and raised, dreads the prospect of another lockdown. She found it "very difficult" when most of her teaching went online as COVID-19 first hit."The city that never sleeps was asleep for a year. Everything was closed, and the streets were dead. It was awful," she told Insider."I was so pleased when things went back to normal," she said, adding she didn't expect another full lockdown as cases were still low and, with 65.2% of people fully vaccinated, few were falling seriously ill.She says she doesn't know how she'd deal with another lockdown. "We got vaccinated early on, which means we are better prepared now for what's happening," she said. "We need to be careful with masks and hope that the numbers stay low so we don't need to disrupt our lives again."Bejach is still planning a trip to Italy that she had to cancel during the first lockdown. She said, with COVID-19 looming again, increased testing at the airport and new rules could be "just something we'll have to get used to."She is due to fly there August 22. But she's concerned: "The new restrictions have me thinking that it will continue getting worse and that they might cancel us again."

Israelis describe what it's like when your country vaccinates its way out of the pandemic - only for the Delta variant to fuel rising cases

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Since June 19, the <keyword id="6354656" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="fda">FDA</keyword> has been warning consumers of dangerous hand sanitizers that contain the fatal chemical methanol. Methanol is a type of alcohol that can be deadly if ingested or absorbed through the skin.</li><li>The FDA found some <keyword id="424454" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="hand-sanitizer">hand sanitizer</keyword> producers putting it into their products. In some cases, methanol wasn't a listed ingredient. In other cases, sanitizers lacked germ-killing ingredients.</li><li>Here are all of the hand sanitizers the FDA has warned consumers of so far due to methanol, or lack of active ingredients like isopropyl alcohol.</li></ul>Since June 19, the FDA has been building a list of hand sanitizers that they say could <a href="https://www.insider.com/fda-warns-consumers-poisonous-chemical-methanol-hand-sanitizer-2020-6">contain the deadly chemical methanol</a>, or that lacked enough active bacteria-killing ingredients, like isopropyl alcohol.As hand sanitizer production increased during the pandemic, more companies pivoted to producing the high-demand product. Ethanol and isopropyl alcohol, the two types of alcohol commonly found in sanitizers and the ingredients that make them effective at killing germs, were in short supply.That's why the FDA believes some producers starting swapping in methanol, another type of alcohol, and an ingredient used to produce antifreeze and fuel.Unlike ethanol and isopropyl alcohol, <a href="https://www.insider.com/fda-warns-consumers-poisonous-chemical-methanol-hand-sanitizer-2020-6">methanol can be deadly</a> when inhaled or absorbed into the bloodstream through your skin. In the United States, any product that contains more than 4% methanol must be <a href="https://bioenergyinternational.com/biochemicals-materials/methanol-not-effective-or-safe-hand-sanitizer-or-disinfectant-for-covid-19-cautions-methanol-institute">labeled as "poison."</a>That's why <keyword id="6354750" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="health">health</keyword> officials flagged nine methanol-containing hand sanitizers that all came from one producer in Mexico. Even still, Morgan Stanley prefers Spain to <keyword id="6354785" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="France">France</keyword> – which has all sorts of problems of its own. Though it's considered part of the "core" of the eurozone, along with more robust economies like Germany, it's certainly been losing a lot of its appeal for investors lately.
Morgan Stanley strategists Matthew Ostrower and Ben Britz write in a note to clients, "The Spanish recovery trade appears to be better integrated in market valuations, French issues less so. While investors still appear to be heavily underweight Spain and not underweight France, recent stock performance suggests better digestion of good Spanish economic news than risks of ongoing malaise in France."
